August (2016) Running Challenge

Actually, I just noticed that Nova replied to my PM. Apparently, it's the number One Hundred Nineteen. Well if I typed the actual 3 digits, apparently spammers are hitting the site and that number seems to be the thing that they type the most. So I guess I need to be careful running that many miles. I need to stop running at 118.9 miles or go straight to 120 miles.
EDIT: Oh! And, One space One space Nine is also getting flagged.
EDIT #2: I just confirmed this and posted a comment with this number in it, and sure enough, it never posted with the pop-up that the comment will appear after it has been approved. It will be interesting if they approve it, because I left a note for the approvers to just delete it if they see it.
EDIT #3: Another note from Nova. Don't try running One thousand eighty, or try and post that number. I guess you have to spell it out if you need to post either of those 2 numbers.
Heh. I would have thought that spammers should know the answer is 42.6 -

So much fun! I've only done it a few times but I love it I'd vote yes for you getting one at the end of the season
Back from the "wilds" of Michigan now (he he) though, and back to real life. Sigh....
I also love kayaking! It can be wonderful to be out on a lake or in a river and can be a great upper body and core workout too. The problem is having a place to store a kayak, having a car you can transport it on and having someplace nice, reasonably close by to go kayaking.2 -

@theresawindsor7374 - Many of us are training for races. Some of us are training for multiple distances. I ran a 5K on Saturday, next up is a half marathon on September 4, after that a full marathon on September 18. I'm not sure which races I'll be running in October, but they will probably include at least one 5K and at least one 15K.1 -

8/13 – 7.45 warmup, Bergen 5K 19:07 PR, cool down
8/14 – 8.05 easy plus one stride
8/15 – 5.40 easy plus 4 strides
August total to date – 97.03
Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Survive last month before retirement. Train as well as possible toward Rochester Marathon. Avoid putting myself back on the couch.
Today's notes – Today's assignment was easy plus 4 strides. This is a peak mileage week on the marathon training schedule, and it includes some quality workouts that are probably beyond my current training level as stated. They also add up to more mileage than I should go up to this week, and I'm not sure how I'll water them down to fit my capabilities. But in light of what else is in the plan for this week, I kept it pretty short today. 82º and not quite as humid as yesterday, and I had plenty of energy left for strides at the end of a 5 mile run.

Got up at 5:30 this morning for a meeting that didn't happen so I was able to get out before the serious heat set in. Tomorrow I have a meeting at 4;30 - we'll see if I can get out early after that one or if I go back to bed! I have agility with the pup tonight and we don't get home typically until 10 so an early morning on Tuesday is not ideal.
@theresawindsor7374 - races are listed below. I have a 10k this Sunday that I am running with my daughter and will get to meet @luluinca! I train for HMs pretty consistently though as it is the distance I like the most.
@Stoshew71 - that is an amazing reason for the issues you were having! I can't believe they couldn't find a better way to handle it though... Maybe they need a better IT department
@cljoe7 - for you - a picture of Hobbes the Vizsla doing what he loves best, well maybe 2nd best - best being running on the beach!

My mood was foul, so I dragged my boyfriend out for an evening walk. Bugger only wanted to go 2.7 miles. I coulda gone a lot more. Oh well, at least I feel a bit better. Now I'm looking good for my walking goal as well as running.
Edit - My ultimate goal is to be able to walk a half marathon. Right now I'm at ten miles. SOON....3 -
@shanaber I see you're doing Beat the Blerch in September. I'm doing the 5k for that. Virtual, of course.2

Funny you should ask. The 2016 Rochester Marathon on September 18 was planned to be my first marathon, but Life Happened and it will be my third. Number four will be next April. If I stop and count, I think Oak Tree on September 4 will be my eleventh half marathon.
Be sure you appreciate the half in October. No matter how well you do later on, that first half marathon will always be special.0 -
Hobbs is so handsome and athletic @shanaber!
Thanks for thinking of me and my doggie @cljoe7 - she's doing so much better.
I'm so scattered today - I don't think I posted this already but if I did, just give me a virtual kick.
8/15 - 3.30 miles. Much better temps today, or at least better enough to make a difference. Got a very distracting phone call in the middle of the run though so kind of threw off my whole run experience. Really should leave the phone at home.

@Orphia On the Hydration Pak. Glad to hear that it didn't elevate your temperature or create a " Wet Back " - Something that I am looking at for future Wilderness Trail Runs.
@kristinegift Smart plan on babying the calf
@Elise4270 Trust an injured runner to spend all of their Budget while on the mend.
@_nikkiwolf_ Congrats on beating your Mountain. Just keep extending out on top for 20-30 seconds
@AdrianChr92 For me ( biased Canadian ) the best photo/video was of our Golden Penny Oleksiak turning to look at the results from the 100m and realizing she was tied for 1st = Golden Moment. She was the same in the Butterfly.

Was originally planning to join my triathlon team's speedwork session tonight as my usual Monday dinner crew was out of town, but wimped out as I probably would have done 4.5 miles (putting me at @stoshew71 's magical banned mileage) and just did 10 miles on the treadmill at an easy 9:30 pace as my legs were feeling a bit fatigued from yesterday's 5 hour bike/run brick. I think that me and the treadmill are going to become good buddies for the next 3 weeks as I won't be back up north until the beginning of September, and Florida is just too absurdly hot for daily 10+ mile runs outside. On the plus side, seeing the women's 400 and men's 800 finals kept me feeling inspired as I wasn't even running at half their speed.
Just noticed I'm on track for a 250 mile month, but will probably take a stepback week after 2 weeks of 20 milers, and just refocus on my diet as I've been plateauing about 5lb above my Chicago marathon target weight (as I've probably been gaining some leg & shoulder muscle from more swimming & biking). I think I really need to get down to the 150 mark (BMI of 22) though to have a reasonable shot at cracking the 3 hour mark.

@katharmonic, @luluinca, @skippygirlsmom, @cljoe7 - thanks! Hobbes the Vizsla is a great running buddy and helps to motivate me to get out the door because without our runs he would be a total nutcase! He loves to go to agility and that is one of my favorite pictures of him. It is a bit like interval training with a dog like Hobbes because he is fast so you are running fast stopping turning and then running again...3

@theresawindsor7374 My first half is on 9 October. I know I could run one right now but I want to train to do it in under 1:40:00. I don't like to go into things just to finish them. Also I'm having a bad time trying to not let my long run hit a half marathon. I guess I'll do one at like 13.0 miles ). Can't wait. Not sure I'll advance to marathon anytime soon though. Maybe next winter.
I finally did it. Broke 20 min 5k today. Decided to do a time trial because the last week 1000 m repeats felt too easy. I got 19:57. Woooohoooo. Now I need to adjust my training paces.

Two days off in a row? THAT'S CRAZY! But oh so necessary.
Since Sunday, I've been babying my calf like nobody's business. I wore compression sleeves most of the day yesterday and brought my ice pack to work and iced it for 20 mins every 1.5-2 hours (my computer tower is just the right height for me to lay my leg flat on top with the ice pack underneath). Then I made a 9pm massage appointment and that was definitely the right choice. It was a sports/deep tissue massage combo, so we started with some deep stretching (like, holy crap, I didn't know my body could move that way!) and then got into the deep tissue stuff and WOW WAS I TIGHT EVERYWHERE. She worked each calf for about 5 minutes each and really dug into my hammies. She also worked my IT bands so good that I uncontrollably pain-giggled. She told me that my hips are super tight and that I really, really need to work on that, and that my hammies and calves need to get more frequent stretching as well. She recommended some stretches and that I come back 3-4 days out from my marathon, which considering how great I feel today I just might do. Yesterday, despite compression and icing, I was walking a little weird and cringing because of my calf... today, it's tight but there's zero discomfort. I even signed up for the spa's membership package because for $60 a month I get a "free" massage (normally, it's $85 for an hour) and that will come in handy when I'm trying to bounce back from a marathon in September and then run another 10 weeks later.
Tl;dr: Massage was fantastic, I learned a lot about how tight I am, and my calf feels like 90% better than yesterday. Hooray!
Upcoming Races:
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Several Towns, PA)
(10/16: Halloween Half (Morristown, NJ) >> maybe)
11/20: Philadelphia Marathon (Philadelphia, PA)
