Why is shirtless running ok only if you "have the right body type"?

When i see a shirtless guy jogging around the neighborhood, my first thought is he's thinking "look at me, look at me". Same thing goes for women bouncing around in their tiny sports bra and even smaller shorts.
When i used to walk/jog around the streets i would wear baggy shorts and tshirt, because i have no desire or need to be ogled/validated by passing complete strangers, so i tried to look as daggy and unattractive as possible.
how utterly projective of you.2 -

That's precisely my issue: why should someone else have to dress differently when they work out simply because you have a problem with it?
It is their issue not yours.
In life, someone will always have a problem with you. It is up to you to decide how much that will affect you.5 -

Precisely.
Also ironic. Makes a ludicrous post about people who don't exercise in old T-shirts being desperate for attention in order to get attention herself..1 -

If you were mowing your lawn "shirt off, with a whisky in one hand, a steak in the other and a cigar in my mouth, while my nipples get sun and my back hair gets wind kissed" I'd be quite impressed and might stop to watch a bit, with a sense of wonder and awe.
I'm not mowing, I'm supervising my teenage boys while they mow......

So because you are running around in baggy clothes judging other people, you are better than the guy running shirtless minding his own business?
Where did say I was better? Some people love getting attention, other aren't fussed about it or want/need it, i just happen to fall in the latter category.
There are two kinds of people in the world: People who believe there are (only) two kinds of people in the world, and those who know there are more. ( in case y'all need one.)
Some people don't want/need attention, but prefer to have less clothing hanging around their bodies. As long as they keep it legal, seems like their business. Pretty sure my (at least 50 pounds overweight) neighbor isn't out there shirtless on his riding mower because he wants attention. Either way, I don't GAF.
Me, I wear stuff. Cover-y stuff. Almost never shorts, even. But I've had folks tell me (not as a personal critique) that women shouldn't wear leggings in public without a tunic over them, yet I do it all the time. Loose pants get caught in the rowing shell seat tracks, and I'm not going to change clothes just to stop at the grocery store on the way home.
And no sports bras for me (no bras at all), or even tank tops. T-shirts. I'm female, and don't even have nipples (anymore), let alone breasts, but I bet I'd still get arrested if I didn't wear a top. Not why I wear one, though. Simple preference. Also cotton, even when I sweat (which is often). Just hate the way tech fabrics feel all plastic-y on my skin. Ick.3 -
You guys need to go live near the equator for awhile. Lots of people went around shirtless in doing just daily chores and activities. Lol, it wasn't uncommon when I lived on an island for people to come into the grocery store shirtless.

people roll their guts out at the beach its a public place. why should jogging be any different.0

I'm not a guy, but I personally hate having to drench my body in sunscreen. I do wear tank tops since my arms tan so freaking easily even with sun screen, but I don't think I'd risk the rest of my body. And I find wearing a shirt more comfortable than trying to sweat through sun screen.0

Cover up.
Sarcasm, right? You needed a winky guy!
I sure hope so... my ideal beachwear is a thong bikini bottom & nothing else. *waits for someone to project their own personal dressing preferences onto me to proclaim me a slutty show-off*
Get off my beach you slut...

I was in Cartagena, Colombia in May...lots of people walking around doing their day to day with no shirts. We stayed in a little village outside of the city and all the guys just hung out at this little bar shirtless and sweaty and drinking beer...it was like a gazillion degrees there...I didn't have a shirt on very often either.0 -
Olympic athletes in front of the world like that...3

If you can't run shirtless because of age and/or overweight doesn't that apply to the beach also? After all its still public?0

Some people don't like to see chunkier people running around jiggling?? I'm not saying this like I care one way or the other. If you are fine with your extra meat flapping around, more power to you. A lot of people are a bit more critical of this sort of display, however. That simple.1

I just trimmed the hedges in the front yard (yes, actual hedges growing from the earth so don't go there) with my shirt off. I got whistled at by a drunk homeless man on a bike. It was endearing.15

If you don't feel the need to pay attention to strangers, why do you deliberately dress for them? Dressing to un-impress is just as much influenced by them as dressing to impress....9 -
My partner is a 45 year old man who is overweight. He goes train running and if its hot he takes his shirt off. People should do what they are comfortable with.0

So, it went from 83F to 100F in less than 40 minutes this morning (Las Vegas-aka the half way point between then earth and the sun). There were young men, old men, fit and fat alike, stripping off their shirts during morning jogs today. And one cyclist in a weener beekeener, but a long sleeve sweater, lol.
It never occurred to me that some of those men can be topless, but some should not. Although, I was a touch jealous that as a woman, local laws prevent me from doing the same. Well, unless I had the forethought to apply pasties before my walk; that's legal coverage in LV, lol.7 -
I see shirtless guys running all the time. I've never paid that much attention so it doesn't bother me at all. If it bothers anyone then maybe they need to get a life if they are paying that much attention to someone else.0

It's a standard humble brag 'I am so hot and beautiful that I must disguise myself in ugly/baggy clothes otherwise every man in the vicinity will be unable to control himself when he sees me running past'.6 -

Because you no longer fit the bill for young and dashing and society looks up to you to set an example. If I were 45 and I had a daughter... I'd never create a chance for her or her peers look at my shirtless body in my effing neighbourhood, and provide room for discussion. It's wrong on so many levels. Yet many dudes do this because they just seek the attention, because age is just a number and emotional maturity is often not proportional to age.
Should men be wearing shirts at a public pool or beach, because of "the children"?
The discussion was about running in public, not being in a place where shirtless is the norm. I agree about the maturity. Certainly, you can say "I don't care what anybody thinks" and do what you want. The problem is that an attitude like that carries over into other aspects of your life. Always better to choose self-discipline. A lack of that is why most of us are here.0 -

How is wearing a shirt while running a show of self-discipline?
And what aspects of my life should I let be influenced by the opinions of strangers?3 -

Yes, I agree. And this attitude SHOULD carry over into other aspects of your life. And if you don't like it, tough *kitten*. I have no intention of ever working FOR you. Get over it.1 -
BTW - Some of the attitudes here are the very reason I got my ear pierced and grew my hair in the 80's. It allowed me to quickly identify people I wanted nothing to do with. Too easy.9
