Sorry a bit of a long winded Race Report Post.
So I had a 10K Trail Race today in Grande Prairie at the Cross Country Ski Club Trails ( Dirt, Mud, Sand, Roots, Wash outs etc ) - 2 hour drive from home. So when I got up it was 12C ( 54F) no wind and Sunshine. When I got to GP it was 4C (39F) - 20km winds and raining. Did I check the weather before I left. NO . Did I have Rain-Wind Gear . So there I was in my shorts and short sleeve top at the starting line. I did find a pair of Bicycle gloves under the seat of my truck so that helped my hands. The first 3 km were brutal, The HM Walkers came through the stadium start area 10 minutes before we started. The 5k and 10k walkers started with us. So we had to dodge and weave through all the walkers, it was an uphill start with lots of sand so soft and broken up by the people in front of us. Can't blame the organizers - due to the Rain they had to do an Emergency Course Reconfiguration this morning as parts of the Original Planned course were under water. There was only one corner where the Trail Marking was a little thin and some people did get on the wrong trail - which Dead - Ended at an Emergency Access gate in ~50m so they had an extra 100m by the time they back tracked.
km 1 7:29 ( painfully slow - hard to get a rhythm going )
km 2 6:40 Better
km 3 6:20 Oh Yeah in it now
Finally clear of the packs. Averaged out at an estimated sub 6/km for the event. I was at 53 mins at Km 9 and after crossing the Finish Line forgot to stop my watch until I had made a complete lap of the stadium area doing a cool down walk. The group of 4 people I was walking/talking with all had the same issue. We all had it at about 62 mins after the cool down walking lap. Unfortunately it was not a chip timed event as the economic down turn has meant a lot of sponsors have cutback which means the events have to cutback somewhere and it is usually the most expensive items that get dumped first ( Chip Timing and Shirts ).
The computer based timing function they were using was overwhelmed by the number of runners coming in close to each other so they were " reviewing the Web Cam images to match Bibs to Clock time".
Results delayed until tomorrow at the earliest. I think I have an AG 1st as I know most of the people in my AG and none of them were in front of me at the start or passed me.
It was the last of 3 events in a series of Trail Races. There were 27 of us who had completed all 3 events and we were eligible for a $1000.00 Door Prize to a local sporting store. No I didn't have my name pulled out of the hat. The lady that won it only started running Events this year so she was ecstatic - As she said " Momma's gonna have some Running Bling in her closet".
Even with the Temperature / Clothing / Rough 3km start - I had Fun and will be back next year but will do the HM at this event. Did I mention that as I crossed the Finish Line I yelled out " I love this ##!!** ".

I was doing some comments on the 3 pages of posts and then MFP Turtled and all was lost.
Sorry not going back as there is to much to cover.
@emmab0902 @MNLittleFinn , @kristinegift and @MobyCarp have covered it best in replies to other runners doing a "First Event". All I can add is Go out and have fun.MNLittleFinn wrote: »kristinegift wrote: »@jodilynnsanders5104 For your 5k, start out slow; don't let the crowd get you going way faster than you've practiced. After the first mile you can ramp it up if you feel good. But like @MobyCarp said: run your own race and don't mind those are slower or faster. Good luck!1 -
@juliet3455 Wow! Sounds like you had fun despite the weather and lack of staging. I bird dog weather coming into a race, then pack for just in case changes. There's a saying here (probably everywhere), "if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute". It's not uncommon for us to be 80f/27c one day, 50f/10c the next during spring and fall.
Personal note. I'm finally getting over this flare up. I talked dh into a walk. My cats are crazy and follow us. All three of them. That's how you heard 'em, ignore 'em and they'll follow. Anyhow, my wee bit was in the road and a car was coming, so I chased her. Yes, I ran, maybe 10 yards. My legs were like "wtf, why has it been so long". DH isn't keen in my desire to self rehab. I'm happy. I can feel tired leg muscles. Tomorrow is a swim day. I wanna run.7 -

Very nice weather today.....in the 70's with a cool wind. Very crowded on the trail. Everyone wanted to walk their dog today. Planned to run 10 miles at max heart rate of 77-83% but decided on 9 miles because it was getting late and I still needed to shop for groceries. Average was 82% and achieved in just under 2 hours....noted tightened quads and sore right hip again. I noted that I instantly became tired after 6 miles....I think that it is psychological, because I didn't exert myself at all the first 6 miles except to sprint across a crosswalk before the light changed...heart rate didn't increase at all (during the sprint). Also noted that I ran the miles slower as I tried to maintain that pace.
Is it too late to work on my base before the next half marathon race....reading "80/20 running"...on chapter 3.
I have been asking about supplements because it seems that a fair amount of people on this site are injured or have suffered injuries. The supplements I have been using lately are Taurine...to help with sleep (and recovery)...I work shift work...so I experiment all of the time with sleepers. Using ALCAR (acetyl-L-carnitine)...to help stay awake....I had to increase my dosage to 4 grams prior to work..must be building some tolerance. May try ALCAR before my next runs....see if I improve my recovery. Some days I feel like Elvis. (LOL)
After I fell on the ladder I had my right knee x-rayed...no fracture but it showed mild degenerative disease in the medial area of my knee...code for osteoarthritis....so surprised to see it on my films...I recently added MSM to my supplements...it is very vile tasting....like "skunk"....even tomato juice doesn't improve it.
9/1....4 miles

Made it to DC yesterday around 3:30pm after taking a shortcut to see Antietam, while reducing my final day ride to a more manageable 112 miles (with only 85 of those miles on the bumpy C&O towpath). With the weather up to 95, and only an hour of slack time before needing to go to a birthday party, I decided to just skip my post-ride run, and let my legs recover as left leg was starting to bug me.
Still, I met up with another friend this afternoon to join him and his drinking/running group for a short 3 mile hash run through the wilderness. Although I was hoping to do more, I think after 3 consecutive 100+ mile days of trail riding on my bike, a light day was probably in order.
Planning a mid distance run tomorrow around the Capitol before the steelers/redskins game, then more runs around Philly this week as I'll be there the following 3 days (for some Pirates games).

@_nikkiwolf_ - congrads on your half marathon PR!!
@MobyCarp - eagerly awaiting the 19th to register, as I'm in the "less than 5 minutes" group (but aging up for the 2018 race)
@ddmom0811 - Did the same ride 2 years ago on a much lower mileage base, and was in pain/dead every day. This time, aside from some light soreness, I finished each days ride about 2-3 hours earlier, and even felt good enough to do a post ride run on day 2. Should be good to go for my ironman in another 8 weeks.3 -

9/12: 3 miles with Coffee Crew!
After a huge feast of Indian food last night for a friend's bday dinner, I got to bed late and getting up this morning was rough. I was glad to only be doing the second 3 mile loop with my Coffee Crew at 6:30. It was a totally gorgeous morning to run though; 55 degrees, slight breeze, sun just coming up. Hopefully this cooler weather is here to stay!
Only evidence I ran a race yesterday is that my quads are mysteriously sore (and my calves are tight, but that's pretty normal). I foamrolled my calves a bit before I headed out and they were fine for the run but my quads were sore and I don't know why! I didn't push hard at all yesterday, there were basically no hills... I am going to blame the heat.
But my calf strain is now fine; it was only minimally bothersome yesterday (on the 6 miles of cinder path) and was fine this morning. So I am giving myself the green light/all clear to resume hard training again. I've got a 50 mile week on the schedule and I'm so excited!
Upcoming Races:
9/11: Lehigh Valley Health Network Via Half-Marathon DONE!

There's part of me trying to figure out how to get the taper and recovery I need, and still get the 60 more miles I need to make the mileage goal....ugh....I'm not the kind of person who's good at having 2 goals at once. Looks like the mileage goal will be the one to suffer. I really want to do well at the HM.
@MNLittleFinn
Like @kristinegift said, just figure in your taper and post race recovery as part of your monthly goal. When in doubt, let the monthly goal go and concentrate on your races.
Here is my blog on tapering and carb loading. It was written with a full marathon in mind but can be adapted for half marathons.

Great race @kristinegift Great PR's @_nikkiwolf_ & @RespectTheKitty
Nice race report @juliet3455
Welcome to all the new people joining us.
We went to the outlet mall in Nashville this Saturday and I got 3 pairs of new shoes. One pair of Nike's, a pair of New Balance, and my first pair of Saucony's. All 3 came out to a total of $160.

@Stoshew71 - I liked your updated blog post! So much info... it takes me a while to really get it all. Very helpful! Thanks for taking the time to write it and share!
@ohhim - awesome riding - and running! Sounds so fun but wow, that is a lot of mileage in such a short time.
@_nikkiwolf_ congratulations!!! new PR that’s awesome!
@elise4270 - you will be back running, my friend! I know it! I may have to get that journal also!
I did the 100 miles biking yesterday! I know there are biking groups on here, but I don't have time for two groups. Plus I love you guys! It was very hot yesterday. I didn't finish with the 2nd fastest group (the one I started with - which was 20 mph). Around mile 70 (or somewhere I don't even know), I could not keep up with them anymore. So about 5 of us formed our own little group and took turns pulling (although one lady pulled most of the way). Around mile 80 we had to make an unscheduled stop for more water at a Walgreens and sitting in the shade Garmin said 96 degrees. And we still have 20 miles to go. I drank SO much and ate a lot on the ride.
It was fun when we got to the end because all the people who were in before us were sitting around drinking beer and they all got up and cheered for us as we crossed. I was the only one who was doing my first 100 and they made me feel so good for doing it on such a hot day. I learned several things - one thing is I need to reapply sunscreen. My face is very burned - not good! I had it in my pocket but my pockets were so full of sports beans and cliff bars and everything else, that I couldn't find it.
My body feels fine today! I can't believe it! But my head is hurting - dehydration, I can tell. Even though I've been drinking so much today. And I drank a ton yesterday. I had 8 24oz bottles of water mixed with Skratch and/or Nuun.
I could have even run this AM, but I know I needed sleep more.
9/1 - 4.8 miles
9/2 - strength training
9/3 - 34 miles biking

Last week was time for me to get some variety in my running, some speed runs and long runs to get my 5K to a good pace. It may be the placebo effect but I managed to improve my 5K time despite the typically grey and wet weather! I've also ended up signing up for a run this Saturday near the site of the Olympic stadium in Stratford, a change of scenery from my local park should keep me motivated and gets me out and about!

@Stoshew71 Amazing deal on those shoes!0

Fell way behind on reading over the weekend, and have not gotten any running in. We went to a concert with my parents in Lawrence, KS, on Thursday night. I worked a half day, then drove the 3 hours to Lawrence that afternoon. The show was good, but after 5+ hours of driving that day, I was just exhausted. Friday, we drove home from Lawrence (along with my parents, who stayed the weekend with us). Saturday was a moving day. Finally got our new refrigerator to the new house, as well as a shed, some small equipment, the rest of the kitchen, antiques, wall decor, etc.
I had planned to run Sunday morning, but had been suffering digestive upset since Wednesday, and it was no better on Sunday, so I scrapped that plan (even though the weather was gorgeous--only 51 degrees Sunday morning). Probably a good thing, as my parents had headed out early Sunday morning, and called us a couple hours later because their truck had broken down on the way home. DH and my dad diag'ed the trouble over the phone, and we hit up the auto parts store and headed up to rescue them. It was a little over an hour drive to get to them, then took about 30-45 minutes to do the repair (power steering pump, pulley, & drive belt replacement). So much for my planned lazy Sunday.
I am going to take a few more days off of running, as I'm still having some minor pain in my right leg (fibula area). Don't want to risk making it worse.2 -
9/1 - 1 hr walking, not all at once
9/2 - 4 mi run, 35 min strength
9/3 - 2.5 mi walk
9/4-9/10 - NOTHING. Huge break.
9/11 - 3 mi run, 2 miles walking
Goal: Not be in pain
Well I haven't kept up very well on this thread this month. Took a solid 7 days off, literally moving as little as possible. I think my fitbit report today will say something like 50,000 steps for the week and that's only because Saturday we spent the day in Branson and walked a lot. LOL
Yesterday morning was a cool (although humid) 52 degrees so I decided to try out running. That pain behind/above my knee has felt great with completely stopping all activity, but was 7 days enough? We'll see. I walked half mile, then started Garmin and did 3 miles running (with a few walk breaks. Sigh.) and then walked another half mile cool down. My average pace for the 3 miles was 11:45 and all I can do is just say WOW. All I've done all year is get slower and slower. It's like I've never run at all. I remember strangely little about that 3 miles except that my mouth was dry (dumb Benadryl). I don't even remember why I walked. I'll probably try running again tomorrow and then Friday and pray to God the pain doesn't come back. One day I will run my old pace again????
@Elise4270 Your cats follow you for a walk? What sorcery is this? LOL
@ceciliaslater Good luck with your leg pain.
@Stoshew71 Great deal on the shoes!

Yes. I don't know why they do that. The oldest (10) use to follow the kids to school. He also runs with me out about half a mile then heads home. Identity crisis? I think, they think, we're hunting without them or its a game? No clue. Maybe I'll drop Jackson Galaxy a note for insight.

Hi all, just after a quick bit of advice. I'm taking a few days out from running due to tonsillitis and not being able to get much fluids down so I've decided to make myself feel better by buying some new running shoes. I've only ever owned one pair so I don't really have much idea as to what to buy. I've noticed a lot of people here mention Brooks Ghosts and I've found a pair on sale for £65, are they any good and is that a good price? Thank you1

Brooks are good shoes. If they aren't to your liking, Brooks has a great return policy. Price seems fair. Like 73 USD.0 -
5k on Saturday went okay, but I had a problem where I kept getting stuck behind full rows of walkers, and made myself sick running faster to try to make up for lost time.
Ran easy 6.5 miles on Sunday.
9/1 6.3 miles
9/3 6.2 miles, split into two equal runs as I started out way too fast.
9/4 6.3 miles
9/6 6.2 miles (treadmill)
9/8 4.8 miles fartlek run on treadmill, felt sick after completing speed portions and had to stop.
9/9 6.4 miles easy run
9/10 3.1 miles (Pure Tap 5k)
9/11 6.5 miles
Upcoming races:
9/10 - Louisville Pure Tap 5k 25:03
10/1 - Norton Sports Health Great Pumpkin 10k
10/22 - Urban Bourbon Half Marathon
11/24 - Hungry Turkey 5k1 -

I have no complaints on the Ghost 7. I paid about $55 US last year. I got the Ghost 8 for $40 at the local running store July 4th sale but haven't worn them yet. The Ghost 9 is out now. The further back the model, the lower the price oughta be :-D
@untermrad I love your race names...."Great Pumpkin" and "Hungry Turkey"!0 -
9/01 ..... 3.2
9/02 ........... Rest
9/03 ..... 3.3
9/04 ........... Rest
9/05 ........... Hiked 6 miles
9/06 ........... Walked 6 miles with a friend
9/07 ..... 2.3 Easy run then walked, DOMS was a little much to ignore
9/08 ........... Rest
9/09 ........... Rest
9/10 ..... 3.2 With DD. She walked a little more than last time but I am still happy with what she put in.
9/11 ..... 5.0 With DH. I was a little surprised with the pace: felt easy at ~10:30 min/mile, it was usually 11-12 for me
Total Miles: 17
So, as I have found out, my goal for this month was kind of crazy. And on top of it, I did not do so well last week. So, instead of waiting to report not-meeting-my-goal at the end of the month, I am just going to adjust it to a more reasonable range to keep myself accountable for the rest of the month. New Goal: 60 Miles

I have no complaints on the Ghost 7. I paid about $55 US last year. I got the Ghost 8 for $40 at the local running store July 4th sale but haven't worn them yet. The Ghost 9 is out now. The further back the model, the lower the price oughta be :-D
