@KatieJane83 Wow, great video! Sure, a 600mi ultra is the next logical step after a marathon ^^
@BeeerRunner Happy Birthday! Those office decorations are awesome, you should tell your colleagues they are the best coworkers ever :-D
@MNLittleFinn Using Joel Friel's method, I get 181 as LTHR (from the fast-and-flat bit of my last HM); and my vLT at 5:41min/km. McMillian's calculator gives me 5:42min/km as vLT based on the result of the entire race. I'm not sure how the McMillan calculation is done, but since the result from the full race there vs Joel Friels method, I guess that's good enough for me. My average HM over the entire race was 177. I probably did not run for 2+ hours above lactate threshold - assuming I stayed a few beats below, the 180 sound realistic as well. Of course, I don't usually train by heart rate, so I'm just using that information for my amusement
@Ohhim Oh no, that's really frustrating! I wish you all the best for Chicago, and then you can crush Boston in 2018.
@Elise4270 Great that you can do the 5k and have beer and pizza with the others that are doing the half. I'd love to join, but the trip is a little too far for a race; I'm not that crazy (yet?).2 -
So... race report time!
There was a 5.4km race at work tonight (three loops of 1.8km). I wanted to see if I could improve my 5k PR from March. Spoiler: no, I didn't. But at least I had a speedy warmup before the race, that one's a PR for sure
There was a kids race just before the main event, just a single loop. They asked for volunteers to accompany the kids, claiming it would be a nice warmup. I figured it would also be a nice way to recce the course, so why not?
... Lesson learned! The boy I was supposed to follow was FAST! I set new PRs for all distances from 400m to 1mi during the "warmup", and I still couldn't keep up with him on the sprint towards the finish line - that's when I dropped to a walk, I figured since he was now close enough for his parents to see and I still wanted to race three loops myself, that had to be okay.
I was still bent over, gasping for air, when the main race started. Fortunately, they didn't start all runners at the same time, but staggered. The way it was done was a new experience for me: you had to predict your finish time, and then the start times were adjusted so that everyone should finish at the same time. Interesting concept, but I'm not sure I'm completely convinced. On the plus side, it gave me nearly 10 more minutes to catch my breath. But it also meant I had to start 1:30min after the runner before me, and another 1min passed until the next two runners were launched, so I was completely missing the "race feeling" of running in a group, picking someone and trying to stick to them, ...
Acutally, the first runners to start had just finished their first loop when I started running, and I had to stop myself from falling into step with them and push past them instead. In turn, when I had finished my first loop, they were just starting the fastest runners, who sprinted past me much too fast to follow. I ran the three loops in 10:06, 10:51, 10:21 (after the crazy "warmup" loop, which only took me 8:42min, even with walking the last bit...!). For the first 5km, Strava gives me a time of 28:40, which is a bit slower than the PR (28:35) I had hoped to beat. Still, considering I was stupid enough to wear myself out during the warmup, and the fact that this course was much hillier than the one in spring, I'm okay with the result.

I did Yasso 800s for the first time ever tonight! For the uninitiated, Yasso 800s are when you do a bunch of 800 meter repeats trying to hit your "marathon time" in minutes and seconds. I want around a 3:30 marathon, so I aimed for 3:20-3:30 minute half-miles. Yassos are good marathon time predictors, but many have reported that it's really +5 minutes. I jogged a mile to a local park that has a .65 mile paved trail around a bunch of soccer fields and then I went at it. I did 8 x 800 with 3:30-4 minute recovery in between (depending on how close I was to another 1/10 mile so I didn't have to start at weird intervals). Then I did 2ish mile home.
Here's my Yasso splits: 3:22, 3:26, 3:25, 3:24, 3:28, 3:26, 3:29, 3:28. NAILED IT!
According to these, I should be able to manage anything from a 3:22 (taking it at face value) to 3:34 (slowest split +5) for a marathon, which I think is a pretty fair assessment. The last 2 repeats were a real push, but I am so happy that I didn't let any slip under the 3:30 mark. It was also sort of crazy how easily I fell into that 6:44-6:58/mile pace each time because that still seems ridiculously fast to me.
Felt good to go fast though. And those recovery jogs.... heaven.
OVER 200! HOORAY!
Upcoming Races:
9/11 LVHN Via Half-Marathon DONE!

I am so sorry @Ohhim that you did not make it. On the bright side, looking forward to you doing Boston with me and @kristinegift in 2018 (fingers crossed for all of us). I know a few others in here will be trying for it as well but forgot who. Hopefully @MobyCarp will be there as well.
BTW, there is a group from my running group that are doing Chicago.
Condolences on the slim miss @Ohhim for 2017. But 2018 is going to be an MFP PAR-TAY, just like @Stoshew71 said!1 -
Well i might not make my target of 35 miles but tonights 4.5 miles gets me to 30. As a I said to a friend on the school run this morning when I was chasing my daughter on her scooter this is why I run - to keep up with my kids lol!
2 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - how did you like your new Merrill 0 drop shoes? I had some minor calf complaints when I switched but I had been mostly wearing running shoes with a 4mm drop previously so it wasn't a difficult transition at all.
@Ohhim - loved your IM pictures! So terrible about the Boston cutoff!
@Elise4270 - so awesome that you are going to slowly manage the 5K in November!
@ddmom0811 - you ought to try getting your RHR with your HR strap on - if your FitBit is off when you are running it may be way off for your RHR too.
@BeeerRunner - Happy, Happy Birthday from a (California) Packers fan! I am also a 49ers fan from when I was a kid my ideal game would be to see the Packers play the 49ers assuming the 49ers had a team that was competitive again!
Rest day for me - struggling with motivation to do anything... have so much work to do and don't want to do any of it. Instead I have been here, reading posts, which is MUCH more interesting!!2 -
@kristinegift Nice job on the Yasso 800s!0

Got in 6 miles today. 5 at lunch, plus another 1 on the treadmill before Zumba. I can just about taste that triple digit goal for the month, lol.
I have to say, I kept getting distracted by all my calf muscle definition in Zumba class, haha. I hadn't made it to class in a few weeks, and with all the running, and the losing weight, and wearing capris, it was a nice NSV for me.

@Stoshew71 @7lenny7 @WhatMeRunning There was a Strava request by aka emptydog that does not appear to be linked with this group. I'm out of town, on mobile and have not approved nor denied the request. Maybe it's a lone wolf?
I know another mfp user had issues with a person on Strava and don't want to allow that or any other disruptive person to view our runs/activities.
I wonder if we should request an MFP PM or post here to join the group. I joined the Strava mfp cycling group and such request was made to keep the group honestly MFP.
If anyone is harassed by another on Strava through this running group, please let Stan know. Or me, or Lenny, or Chris, but it's Stan's group, He's The Man.1 -
Finally, the weather has been excellent for running this week. Catching up on a lot of posts, I'll do my best.
@Ohhim Sorry to hear about Boston. That's so frustrating!
@skippygirlsmom I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom.
@ccontr11 Missing running time due to illness is so irritating, but hopefully you've rested and fully recovered.
@BeeerRunner Happy Birthday!
@Stoshew71 and @AdrianChr92 Thanks for the various insightful posts about speed training, use of HRM, etc. Many "training plans" and articles I've come across are sometimes too vague on definitions of pace ranges for me to figure out.

I am pals with emptydog on MFP. He was telling me he journals (in an actual book) all of his runs and asked me how I tracked mine, so I told him about Garmin and Strava and the MFP group on there. Sorry, didn't know you'd need a heads-up!0 -

Indianapolis Half Marathon 10/8/16
One America Half Marathon 5/6/17
Planned 4 mile run, but it was cold and rainy...started with a light drizzle but before I got to mile 3, it started raining harder with booms of thunder. Usually don't run outside in this weather, but have changed my mind-set. This is only my second outing with the new shoes, and didn't want to ruin them with stepping in deep puddles. I was surprised that I was still able to keep up with quick (for me) pace. My glasses fogged and I got rain in my eyes, so significantly slowed in mile 2.5. I still wanted to finish the 4 miles, but okay with getting in 3 miles. I liked my shoes better today...didn't lace them at tight as the old shoes.
Next long run planned for Saturday...then taper week.

9/06 ........... Walked 6 miles with a friend
9/07 ..... 2.3 Easy run then walked, DOMS was a little much to ignore
9/08 ........... Rest
9/09 ........... Rest
9/10 ..... 3.2 With DD. She walked a little more than last time but I am still happy with what she put in.
9/11 ..... 5.0 With DH. I was a little surprised with the pace: felt easy at ~10:30 min/mile, it was usually 11-12 for me
9/12 ........... Rest
9/13 ..... 3.1 With DH again. It was later at night and we wanted to get it done. We ended up running more like a tempo speed. I threw in a fast (for me) finish thinking, I probably wouldn't be able to run fast for next few weeks after the blood donation...
9/14 ........... Rest - donated blood today. Will focus on having more iron rich food and hope the run tomorrow would not be too much of a suffering...
9/15 ..... 3.1 Ran too fast in the beginning. I need to work on slowing down again...
9/16 ........... Rest from running. Did some bodyweight strength training again, finally
9/17 ..... 3.3 Family/Group run
9/18 ..... 2.4 Wanted to run 5~6 miles but my legs (mostly left leg) felt really tight which I assumed was from the strength training on Friday and possibly a lot of standing the day before. Half way through, DH wanted to stop and I gladly agreed...
9/19 ........... Rest
9/20 ........... Walked 5 miles
9/21 ........... Rest
9/22 ..... 3.2
9/23 ........... Rest
9/24 ..... 3.3 Family/Group Run
9/25 ........... Too Hot
9/26 ......5.0
9/27 ........... Rest
9/28 ......3.2 + strength train
Total Miles: 43.5
The weather cooled down a bit but still kind of hot comparing to what I am used to. I tried very hard to stay in conversational pace. Finally put some strength training in again, 2nd time in the month LOL.
With just 2 days left in the months and 16.5 miles to go. I don't think I should attempt to make goal with my recent low mileage. But something interesting that Strava does: while it keeps my weekly mileage under Training Log purely running miles, it added my hiking/walking miles to my monthly mileage under Training Calendar. So, according to the Training Calendar, I logged 61 miles today, which would make me meeting my adjusted goal for this month

The discussion on Zones and HR has been really interesting and educational.
Thanks heaps to Stan and all who shared insights.
Digging around in Strava, I noticed it was calculating my zones as per a 5K PR a minute slower than my most recent PR.
Fixing that has helped my Pace Distribution chart look a bit better.
I also discovered that it calculates my Zone 2 as being between 6:11 - 7:10 minutes per km.
That's useful to know, on top of Stan's tips to reduce pace and all the other advice.
29 September – 9.2 km
Goal: 150 km – ACHIEVED 22 Sept
New Goal: 200 km – ACHIEVED 26 Sept
Total: 222.8 km

Did my 2 x 3.5km tempo run today - including my warm up, recovery and cooldown it came to 8.66km. The great news is that takes me to 70.08km for the month just making my revised target of 70km! (No run planned tomorrow)
Was nice and cool (18C/64F) with cloud cover, but very windy out. I struggled to maintain my tempo during the second fast run - still learning to judge my pace, but was only a few seconds per km out from my upper limit so I'm happy with it. Now to start planning next month's running!

I made it through this run by the skin of my teeth. My legs are so tired. I just wanna take my coffee, get into bed, and sleep some more... not go to work. But Adulting must commence!
Run was slow today because the first hour of it was in the dark, my headlamp needs to be replaced with a brighter one, and everything was slick because it has been raining since 1 am (on and off). I kept yelling at cars who were driving with their brights on because COME ON, WE'RE IN TOWN. And I yelled at a guy who did not move over for me on a no-traffic back road, at which point I had to jump over into some wet, icky grass to avoid him. Many *kittens* did come out of my mouth. But seriously; I was wearing a reflective vest and a head lamp... y u no move, car? There was no other traffic, he could have moved to the other lane without issue. So I yelled some choice phrases and then muttered about it for a while. Legs were pretty dead from the Yassos last night, but not sore or achy. I am really looking forward to tonight's group run because that means TOMORROW IS REST DAY!!!!

Today's notes: Ran 4 miles trying to keep HR in zone 2. From the looks of my strava and Garmin data, I succeeded fairly well. I ended up spending about a minute of the run with an overall average HR of 147(top of zone 2 is 157 based on a 175 LTHR). This was a little higher than I wanted, but I think my cold was just kicking my butt today.
on a side note, I swear, I'm actually getting more tired from keeping the run slow than when I sped through it. Is this for real, or is it in my head? could it just be that since the time on my feet is longer for the mileage? Interesting things for me to ponder.
Anyway, I'm thinking about taking tomorrow off to let my cold get a little better, and start next month with a nice slow run on Saturday.

If anyone is harassed by another on Strava through this running group, please let Stan know. Or me, or Lenny, or Chris, but it's Stan's group, He's The Man.
I am pals with emptydog on MFP. He was telling me he journals (in an actual book) all of his runs and asked me how I tracked mine, so I told him about Garmin and Strava and the MFP group on there. Sorry, didn't know you'd need a heads-up!
Hey no problem. I was just trying to be cautious about it all! It kind of threw me because most people have their name listed and one without a name got me thinkin' "what if?".0 -

It's always a good idea to be cautious. His first name is Alan, and he has been on MFP for at least a couple of years if that helps.0 -

No problem. I'm still on mobile out of town. Someone else may okay it before I get back. Thanks for the info!0 -
End of month question for everyone. What changes, goals do you anticipate seeing in the next year running? Where would you like to be?
Me, back chasing that sub 2 half pain free, strong, having had won the lottery so I can come visit everyone and we can go run and shop for new gear together. a year from now- I'd really like to be at my running goal weight, -10 pounds.4 -
Goal for next year is to run a sub 2 half without walking any of the race. I'm also hoping to get closer to a 50 minute 10k time. I need to get some time in at the gym lifting. I've done a lot of running, but I can tell my leg strength isn't what it once was, and I think that's effecting my ability to manage hills and headwinds on those longer runs.2

Sub 2 HM, 30 lbs lighter
More Wilderness-Bush Hopping Trail runs - less pavement.
Run in every Province - Territory in Canada. ( good thing I don't live in the US- to many States=lots of runs )
Run in my Grandparent's Homeland, Norway, Iceland, Ukraine.
Shopping with @Elise4270
MFP HM some where in the center of NA where we can have a Meet and Greet.3 -
I have a question for the group. There's a 5k the night before one of the Half Marathons I am hoping to run next year. That HM will NOT be one in which I am going for a PR. If I sign up for both, I can skip the lottery for the HM and get in automatically. Is this something that is doable?0
