So far I have been using the stationary bike. Now i am thinking of buying a bike which I can take out side. Any suggestion the kind of bike to buy or what should I look when buying the bike.
I used to ride a "trekking bike" which I bought quite cheap at a large supermarket chain; but I never went any long distances with it. This summer, I bought a used road bike, and I love it. I never knew the type of bike could make such a difference!
In my case, one of the deciding factors which bike to buy was what was available in my price range in the used bike ads when I was looking. Once I save up a little money to spend on it again, I might exchange the chainset from the standard double (53/39) it is now to a compact one (maybe 50/30), because I live in a rather hilly area and would like to have some more lower gear options, but if I had waited for the "perfect bike", I'd still be browsing the classifieds and taking my car to work
One of the main things to keep in mind is to get a bike with the right frame size - all the other components you could upgrade later, but if the frame is too small or too large, there's not too much you can do about it.
And of course, it should be the right kind of bike for what you want to do with it. I love my new bike, but there are a few cross-country shortcuts that I took in the past that I can't take with it anymore, because it's not really suited for that terrain.0 -

October Ride Challenge
10/03 - 12.0 miles, REB (Recumbent Exercise Bike), 12.0 down, 388 to go
10/04 - 13.3 miles, The Loop (Road Bike), 25.3 down, 374.7 to go
10/06 - 13.3 miles, The Loop (Road Bike), 38.6 down, 361.4 to go
@sakvani - Brakes: Rim Pads or Disc? Mountain Bike, Cyclocross, cruiser, Road Bike, Tri-Bike? Material: Steel, Aluminum, Carbon, Titanium? How much money? What nikkiwolf said above, (one option) buy a used bike that fits to figure out what you want and then buy the bike you want.
I am riding a 2011 Specialized Sectuer which is the Aluminum framed version of the Specialized Carbon Roubaix. The Sectuer was sold as an "Entry Level Road Bike." Over time I've changed a lot of the components to customize the bike to my riding capabilities.
Good Luck!0 -
Forgot to share this. My friend's rear tire was punctured and he used a tube that had been in his seat bag for awhile and it had a hole in it, so we ended up changing the tube twice. The moral of the story is, if your spare tube has been in your seat bag for over a year, replace it (or at least check it).
I keep mine in a thicker zip lock bag in the seat bag. Good Luck!2 -

No mileage or event goals this month - just simply to get as much riding in as possible. Short days and colder temperatures that affect my Raynaud's afflicted fingers and toes limits my opportunities.
Sunday 2nd - 56.9 miles
Tuesday 4th - 21.8 virtual miles, intervals on eSpinning bike
Saturday 8th - 57 miles
Sunday 9th - 36.4 miles
Running total = 172.1 miles.
Box Hill in Surrey has a couple of new signs which made me chuckle on the way to a new PR up Zig Zag Rd today.

I'm back in,just returned from Italy and jumped straight back on my bike.
This month will be a mix of autumn countryside and indoor stationary bike, depending on the weather.
9/10 12.7 miles near Tadley
@sakvani, if it is any help, I moved from indoor to outdoor biking this year and enjoy a mountain bike for its strength and stability - I was quite a heavy weight when I started and it felt reassuring. There is suspension in the handlebars but not in the saddle. It has disc brakes and medium 26" tyres. I considered myself a bit of a beginner but I have improved a lot. It has a steel frame which fits and a firm saddle I had fitted from body geometry made a big difference. Many people on this thread are more experienced than me but I thought you might like my input as I did what you are doing , moved outdoors from a stationary bike. Near me the area is hilly and sometimes the roads are potholed or just farm tracks and gravel tracks so I like the confidence that my sturdy bike and tyres are able to cope with a change of terrain. It's a 2nd hand Giant terrago. When I started I was nervous and could only make it to the end of the road; now I regularly can do over 12 hilly miles and have started to outpace my fitter partner. However people on road bikes zoom past me. As others have said though, it depends on your terrain and what you want to do with it. I hav had such enjoyment from mine this year, and dramatic weight loss and fitness improvements.

The seasons are definitely changing. The temperatures are getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and the wind has switched around to come from a Northly direction. A front has moved through, and it has been windy all week. Going to be a short week for me. Going out of town for a funeral, so no riding for 4 days.
