Thoughts on sugar?

I just watched 'that sugar film' and found it SO educating. The part that surprised me the most was the fact that through the whole experiment his daily calorie intake was the same, yet when eating 'low fat foods' (PACKED with sugar) he put on 8kgs in two months! What I'm wondering is, what about fruit? How does fruit effect the body and does it release the same amount of insulin as refined sugars?

That movie was a complete farce!22

Sugar is tasty and doesn't get in the way of my goals. I got fat on savory food.13

I like sugar. I eat it every day. I still lost weight. If I ate nothing but sugar then I would be hungry a lot, but I also eat lots of protein and good fats so that's not a problem.10

Don't mean to offend but that's rubbish, OP.6

I eat lots of sugar from fruit, fruit has lots of fibre and nutrients and is great for you2

I like sugar.
Oh, apparently fruit is magical because fibre cancels out the "evilness" of sugar.

Thanks for the feedback! I gotta say, not the comments I was expecting, but very interesting nonetheless. I do think cutting out refined sugar completely is almost impossible and not completely necessary. I think I'll stick to eating fruit which I love and not eating any processed foods with over 5% of refined sugar.8

I focus more on making sure that I get the things I need from my food (enough protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals). Once I've done that, if there are any calories left, I can eat what I like. Barring any medical issues, the only problem with high-sugar foods is that if you eat too much of them, it doesn't leave room to get all the nutrients you need.8

Yeah, sugar is the latest in a long line of 'eeeevil' foods that is being demonized, but the reality is there's nothing wrong with it in moderation for people who don't have medical food restrictions (diabetics etc). Weight loss is about overall calorie consumption and not about a specific food or ingredient. Just focus on eating at the correct calorie deficit for your weight loss goals and you'll be fine10

Please tell me it wasn't your trainer who put you onto this.
Others have my thoughts covered nicely. Reduce sugar if you wish, but it isn't necessary. Find what works for you.5 -
It was my trainer!! Hahaha.1

I like my sugars. Fruit or cookies, they're both good to me.6

I've never seen the film, but am curious as to what reasons they gave for the weight gain when his calories stayed exactly the same??grammageegee wrote: »What does OP stand for???
OP stands for Original Poster aka you2 -
To answer your question...While sugar in fruit signals insulin to increase, so your cells can take the glucose in for energy, there are lots of vitamins in fruit and veggies we absorb better than supplements so we still need them.
If you are someone who has to worry about insulin, it's best to eat a protein with the fruit to offset a "sugar/insulin spike". For example: banana with pnt butter, or apple with a piece of cheese.3 -
My thoughts on sugar ... I managed to lose 25 kg while consuming sugar every single day.

OMG! That trainer of yours is a cornucopia of all the misinformation. I don't often recommend this, but can you switch trainers? She/he isn't doing you any favors, between this and your other thread.
I'm sorry.
Personally, I don't even track sugar, but do look at it once in a while. Most of mine comes from fruits. Sugar is included in your carbs total. I prefer to track fibre and iron. Again, you need to do what works for you. Are you finding that you feel hungry? I like to treat my fats and proteins as minimums, and carbs fill in the rest.
ETA: Most trainers have no training in nutrition, so she is just passing on whatever tidbits of the day are popular, not actual proper nutritional advice. If you can't switch, or you really enjoy the workouts with her, let her know that you will be seeing a registered dietician for professional dietary advice. Ask your doc for a referral, or just do some reading around here. My trainer wouldn't dream of giving me nutritional advice, because he isn't qualified and when his coworkers do it, it really irritates him.
Here's a great place to start:

There is no difference in the sugar in fruit compared to refined sugar but I'm not sure why anyone would be offended at the fact that you were either unaware of this or have chosen to eliminate something arbitrarily or for personal reasons?15 -

Rubbish!
The only way to put on calories is from eating more calories than you burn. Sugar in and of itself will not cause weight gain.
When it comes to weight loss, your body knows no difference between fruit sugar and table sugar.

Same here. I've heard the trainers at my gym say so many derpy things that I'd never even consider asking one of them for help. My gym has a FB page and they constantly post woo/derp garbage on it. It's almost like reading Dr. Oz's website or something.3 -
I'm open minded. I think certain things in food affect certain people differently (just like some people can not process gluten well and diabetic people need to watch what they eat etc). In most cases, however, I feel it is calories in calories out. Maybe he was less active when he ate sugar? or maybe he has a medical issue?1

I'm glad. Trainers can be amazing for a much needed push, for their knowledge and to help support you in your fitness needs. I adore mine. But there is a limit on what they should be advising you on. Have fun reading! I learned so much just reading through these forums.1 -
