December 2016 Running Challenge

Get into the holiday running spirit and come join us this month. You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to keep you accountable and enjoy a virtual coffee with your fellow runners after you run. Make new friends and learn a few things.
Hi everyone. This is a continuation from the November 2016 Running Challenge which can be found at:

Anyone can join in. New & Old. And if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members that are total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch.
Here are the details from last month that applies here again.
Anybody want to join me for a running challenge? Set a goal here and mark it every day here. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (If creating one seems difficult, then don't let that stop you. Just type in your daily miles here.)
You can run, walk, or do treadmill. Just be consistent. I am setting a goal for 150 miles. I'm tapering and recovering for a marathon this month. Don't let my high (or low) goal intimidate you. Some can do 25, 50; whatever you like. We can help motivate each other. What do you say? If you are new to running, set a low goal. (You can also log your miles in km's if you choose.) Also, if you rather log your process by time rather than distance, you are free to do that as well.
You can set your goal now but wait until Thursday December 1st to start logging your runs.
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did. (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread) Keep a running tally of what you did this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chat it up even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things to include running. Very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time). Talk about a recent race or one coming up. Ask questions, provide answers, or just learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs, follow what many other people are doing. Even look at last month's thread that I posted above.

Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker.
Then you need to update it after you do a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your pin in that you set when you created your ticker account.
Then where it says "Your current cumulative value, there is an add button. Just add what you just did and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
Now after you added your new miles (or km's) to your ticker you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting on how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the img tags around that link. So it will look, (removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets. ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker.
1: Use the link that ends in .png
2. Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
3. remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
4. YES, there is a / in the second /img tag

I have no clue what December will hold. I'll say 100 miles just to keep things somewhat consistent. Actual goal is to Keep marathon training and strength/core work going too.5

so if I do all the runs I plan in December that takes me to a goal of 50. I ran about 30 in November so we'll be hopeful.
In other news, I just looked in detail at the half marathon I have in mind for end of April. 15.1 miles. erm???? That's not quite what I was expecting so better up my training!!!2 -
With weather and holidays, it may be tough to set a higher goal than last month, so I'll go for another 100 and see what happens.3

YAY FOR DECEMBER CHALLENGE!
I'll be in for 150 again this month. Keeping my weekly mileage in the 30-35 range on my calendar to allow myself to take it easy on the running front while I start my New Rules of Lifting for Women training cycle. If I feel good though I'll do longer runs, but right now my midweek maxes at 6 and weekends at 12 (a far cry from my Wed/Thurs back to back doubles and 18-20 mile weekend jaunts from this spring and fall!). December is all about keeping it consistent with the Runners World Holiday Run Streak and the main focus is hitting the weight room and getting strong5 -

Provided I follow my training plan, I should hit approximately 45 miles in December, so that's what I'm going with.

I'm in again going for 50 miles as I'm going to Las Vegas for a week so losing a few days to that, just got to finish off my November challenge tonight to get to 20 miles.3

Well, I managed 78 with 7 days off sick last month, so I think I am going to shoot for 100 miles this month!

I'm going for 60 the third month in a row. We'll see what happens. I'm trying to do the RW Run Streak so mostly running short distances. We travel to Mayo Clinic in December also so I don't know how that'll go. I do intend to run and keep the streak going. *Crossing fingers*

My miles for December should be around 115 for marathon training so I will aim for 100. Maybe one of these days I will actually get all my runs in!2

So...after a few months' hiatus of life getting in the way of absolutely everything, I am back...I think.
December goal: A modest 30 miles.
As of right now, distance training in not in my cards for this year. I'm planning on running nothing longer than a 10K and working on my form, speed, and overall fitness.5 -
I'm in for 100 miles. Skip wants to run her first HM in March so off we go.

My Training program has something called a "Burpee Death Drop" next Friday. Something tells me I'm going to hate myself afterwards.5

I'm in for 110 miles this month. I'm at 118.1 for November and I'd like to increase a little bit but not sure how that will bode with the holidays. Also want to keep it a little conservative in case I need to take it easy for my shin (it's becoming a nuisance). I'd also like to add some light strength training in. I'm going to sit down and plan out my December running calendar tonight and might adjust goals, but I think 110 should be good.2

@skippygirlsmom Oh my gosh, of course she does! She'll be 16/17 by then right? I ran my first 2 HMs when I was 17 (my 3rd after I turned 18; all during my senior year of HS) and the distance was so tough for me mentally. I didn't cross that mental barrier until many years later when I was 23/24. But Skip is a far tougher gal than I was, so I'm sure she'll take to it like a duck to water!0 -
I decided to finally change my image to something running related. Behold, my Garmin proudly displaying my longest run ever. (Yeah, like you can read it, but trust me, it says 10.04 miles.)5

I suspect my run this evening will put me over 100 miles for November. Now, what to set for the December goal? I take a guess at 150 miles. I'd like to run 200, but given my current weekly mileage it seems like that would be ramping up a bit fast.
Nominal challenge goal: 150 miles
Real goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience in flying somewhere to run a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury.1 -

I didn't cross that mental barrier until many years later when I was 23/24. But Skip is a far tougher gal than I was, so I'm sure she'll take to it like a duck to water!
@kristinegift she is 16 now so will run her first at 16. I think that is a good age. She was signed up for the Huntsville Half last year but had a great opportunity for a school trip so I told her to go there instead. The half she will run also has pace groups which I think it good for her first HM.2 -
I'm in for 50 miles this month. Still keeping it low this month. Should be fun and it will keep me moving during the cold month. Still requesting any suggestions for cold weather pants if anyone has any.1
