@katharmonic love the Santa pic! If i looked like I was 25 I'd sit on Santa's lap too! haha!1

@Orphia No I don't play. I had probably half a year around the 5th grade.
Since returning to running is slower than anticipated, I need an outlet. So I figure there's pay off in a violin, and the dang thing keeps calling to me this time of year every year for the last 3-4. Someone played it in church 2 weeks ago and I it was done. I had to get moving on it!
I wanna be a concert violinist! We saw the trans sIberian orchestra and I was in agony longing for the violin, that should have been me kinda thing, last year. I refused to go this year because I couldn't take it again. Haha! Really, that was my first pick as a kid, professional violinist. We just moved to often to stay in it. Fate saved it for my non running slump.
I have troubles with dance shows/ballet for the same reason. I either get depressed I couldn't make it as a professional dancer OR it makes me want to dance again (and not just between sets while lifting or random dancing while running - yup, I'm that weirdo running, dancing and sometimes even singing)

@Strandbergm I usually do a combination of miles and looks on my shoes. If I hit a mileage marker and they look fine I keep going until they show the wear. I also find treadmills seem to reduce the life of my tread but I also tend to scuff my heals while walking. With the ground moving past my feet it is like sandpaper on my tread.
@juliet3455 yeah I got diagnosed with moderate SAD and extreme depression (depression runs in the family so SAD was the trigger) but oddly enough my vitamin D levels were just fine, I used a tanning booth 5-7 days a week at my gym. I'm just solar powered so I need lots of sun1 -
@ddmom0811 - Ouch! Hope it is just skinned hands / knees.
@accn1 - Hmmm...don't remember when I first started here. I think August or September 2014. @davemunger was organizing it and @stoshew71 was in it. So at least 26 months. I ebb and flow a little. It is a wonderful "place"!3 -

I had to give up music as I ran because I couldn't figure out how to "dance" and run simultaneously. I'm a nerd. I can't dance, can't sing, don't draw (well I kinda can when inspired), I mean I'm not an artistically channeled individual. It's odd trying to cultivate this side, I keep telling myself it's still math it's still physics- all the same.
You should go dance. Seriously. Life is too short. Have some kitten fun! Our Y has some dance classes I have loved to take. But currently walking through the house stepping over feet, shoes, cats and navigating corners are still intentiona- not to mention avoiding near misses at the grocery store. I doubt i could dance. I'm doing alright to walk! Haha!
You dance, I'll play. Together.
ETA in 5 years you'd be a heck of a dancer. I'll be a professional violinist:-) haha! There's always local theatre. I do plan on networking a bit. Although, some of them music folks (here) are *insert banjo riff*, *insert overalls* *insert I dated one*, *insert lawnmower races* oops- I digress. We can dream girl. Every run I've ever had- I'm Lauren Fleshman, or Kara Goucher. Maybe even the iron nun. We can share a connection at 12 min/mile
I'll start studying the nutcracker suite, you get the ballet shoes on!1 -
Rest day for me yesterday. Planning a 5 to 8 mile blustery run tonight. Mid 20's and 20mph winds.Strandbergm wrote: »I'm curious how often everyone replaces their sneakers? Is it by mileage, time, wear?
@strandbergm and @alipsie19, wear isn't a great indicator for the end-of-life in a pair of shoes, if by wear you mean how the shoe looks or how much the tread has been worn down. The important functions of a running shoe are support and compression, both of which can be compromised by use without the shoe looking worn out. Don't use wear as an indicator.
The conventional wisdom is that a pair of running shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles, though with that broad of a range you need a better idea when to replace them. I use 300 miles as a reference. When I get close to that point I take note of how I feel after a run. When I feel more sore after a run then I'd expect, I toss them. This is hard for a new runner to judge but eventually you'll the feel for it and you'll just know.
When a shoe starts to lose it's cushion and support, I gradually get more pain in my knees. Sometimes the affect is so gradual that it's hard to even notice a difference from run to run. A great way to judge the condition of a shoe is to have at least two pair in rotation. I like to time it so that I start using a new pair when my older pair has about 200 miles on them. By alternating shoes with each run, I can easily compare how my knees feel from run to run. With some shoes I can get nearly 400 miles (Brooks Glycerin), and some I quit using at 275 miles (ASICS Gel Cumulus, and I won't buy those again).
The reason for 200 mile difference as opposed to 150 miles (half of 300) is that I prefer to use my newer shoes for my longer runs and my older shoes for my shorter runs so I'm getting more support and cushion on my long runs. With the new shoes used for longer run, they'll eventually catch up so that when the older pair hits 300, the newer pair has 200, roughly.
There are a couple of other reasons to alternate. First, it gives the first pair more time to dry out and decompress between uses which will make the shoe last longer. I can't say for certain if this is truth or myth, but that's what *they* say. Second, if you're using a different model of shoe, there will be subtle difference between the two pair which will provide a subtly different set of conditions for your body, subtly working the muscles a bit differently which spreads out the stress to your body, helping to reduce overuse injury. This I tend to believe though to what extent it actually works I can't say.
My last point, and this is important...is that it does not cost any more to buy a second set of shoes (or third, or fourth, etc) because you're still going to get full mileage out of each pair. In fact, you may even get more mileage be letting them rest as you alternate. So really, it could be argued that buying more shoes SAVES you money! This point is important if you need to justify your purchase to a spouse.
Tracking your shoe mileage is very simple if you use an app like Garmin Connect or Strava. I'm sure other running apps have a similar function. You enter the shoes in the app when you start to use them, set a mileage limit, and you can even set a default shoe. When you track a run it gets credited to the default shoe. If you use a different shoe it's about 3 clicks to change shoes. Strava will give you a list like this:
The names look weird because they have you enter in the make & model, as well as a nickname.
@virkati, good luck with the job!!
@ddmom0811, ouch! I'm impressed you went back out and finished!
@katharmonic, great pic! In that photo you look like you're in your early 20's.

@ddmom0811 I wonder if your legs are tired? When I had a bout of falls, it seemed to cluster like that. It's it cooler there yet? Glad you're alright!0

@RunsOnEspresso and @Elise4270 Swing is the way to go. I took up swing dancing a couple of years ago, it's great fun, very social, and a good workout to great music. So if you could just get that violin into a Jazz set that would be great (might need to find some brass/wind players too, and gotta have a double bass. Can't have jazz without a plucking bass)

Ahh, a few days away and I miss eight pages! I may go back and read later, but for right now I'm just jumping in with my update.
My family and I ran the Jingle Bear 5k on Saturday. It was 32*, no wind, and over cast - pretty darn nice for a December morning in Minnesota! I started out trying for a PR, but just didn't have it in me. I missed my PR by 1:14, but it was my fastest 5k this year and fastest since 2014. Finishing time was 33:17.
However, my husband PR'd, his third in a row. This is the first year he ran more than 3 times in the year - this year he ran 7 times! But, he's been mountain biking, which has been huge for his running. Sadly, he'll be able to catch me soon :-( Our son (he's 12) has beaten me the last three races, but he should - he's got youth and a lower body weight on his side!!
Anyway, week #2 of marathon training is complete!

I've done swing before it is great fun. I have attempted pretty much every form of dance. Mostly stuck to ballet, tap, jazz, modern and hip hop when offered.I had to give up music as I ran because I couldn't figure out how to "dance" and run simultaneously. I'm a nerd. I find I become more creative the more I use it. I'm trying to become a professional photographer (I guess it's no longer "becoming" as I've sold stuff & had things auctioned off) & have gotten myself back into other art forms (and reading) because it helps cultivate creativity. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert is an interesting book on this topic. There is a lot of Woo in it but 75% of it is pretty good.1 -
As for shoes, I usually get 400-500 out of my Brooks. I track on my Nike app. I usually start to get shin splints when it's time to retire a pair.1

02-Dec 2.19
03-Dec 1.28
04-Dec 1.09
05-Dec 1.18
06-Dec 1.55 this morning meets with what I hope is just a minor issue… but it sure didn’t feel like a minor issue at the time. I was only about ½ mile into my run when I got a sharp pain in my right foot, I walked for about a minute, then tried a slow jog…. No relief. The pain is located on the mid foot, towards the outside…. Any ideas, thoughts??????

Brrrr! Our temp has dropped since this morning and looks like sun is not happening after all. But I will still enjoy my afternoon run after work Did some strength training this morning.
I got to 275 miles on my Nike Pegasus 31 and 350 on my Brooks Ghost 7 and started having shin pain and knee pain. They both look great, like I could go another 300 miles. But I'm trying new shoes to see if I feel better. And because I had new shoes in the closet for months and was dying to wear them. Ha!
Anybody else having trouble viewing pics? Been going on for about a week for me, both on the computer and my phone app. Like right now I can see @mnlittlefinn 's shoe pic, but I cannot see @ddmom0811 's Santa pic
Oh, pics are back. Cute Santa pic :-D1 -
Dec 1 - 2 mile run, 25 min strength, some other walking
Dec 2 - 3 mile walk, 3.5 mi run
Dec 3 - 5 mile run, 1.5 mile walk
Dec 4 - 1.5 mi run, 15 min pilates/strength
Dec 5 - 20 min light cardio inside, 1 mi run

I also set a goal this month of 93,000 fitbit steps per week and I got 103,000 last week. And a goal of 6 hours strength training/pilates - Garmin says I'm 20% on that, about 70 mins done so far.3 -

I set out for 8k on grass/trail at the local park just to give my joints a bit of an easier time ...
I forgot to say that after yesterdays long run with lots of hills I started to get some minor knee pain (right side) in the evening, (didn't notice it on the run). When I woke up this morning it was quite painful when I knelt on it, with the pain behind the knee cap - on looking it up symptoms they seem to match what's commonly referred to as runners knee.
I have some KT tape that I ordered when I had some ankle issues in September (but arrived after my ankle had healed up fine) so decided to give that a go before heading out, as my usual yoga/stretching routine did nothing to ease the discomfort. I found some videos on rocktape.co.uk of how to tape up (even though I got some cheap unbranded stuff) and have to say it was like magic. Instantly my knee was better - if anything it made my other knee hurt just by comparison (purely psychosomatic I'm sure!). Went through the run without feeling it at all and kept it on since and knee feels great. I swear my form was better also - I tend to strike the ground with my foot noticeably more angled on the right side, (angled so land right on outside of foot with foot pointing ever so slightly away from body). Today my strikes felt much more balanced - I'm due a visit to the running shop when I get paid on the 15th so will definitely see if the gait analysis matches my experience.
Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience in case anyone thinking about using KT tape but not sure.
@7lenny7 - you'll have to share your experiences when your hydration vest arrives. I hate running with bottles and strangely have to work hard to keep my form if I'm carrying two (one is OK) so planning to invest in a hydration solution of some kind, but haven't started researching yet.1 -
@dkabambe Be careful with that... sounds like you might have an IT band issue. Better to rest a few days than to get injured and be out of commission for weeks.1
-
Thanks - I'm definitely keeping an eye on it. After my ankle injury a few months back I'm super conscious of any minor niggles. Even though I was only out of action two weeks, I absolutely hated it so it's probably that I'm overly sensitive to anything feeling different to how it does usually. Like I say, no pain at all since I put the tape on this morning, (even if I press on the area). So much so, I completely forgot about it which is why I didn't mention in original post. I've an easy day tomorrow anyway so will see how it is on Thursday.1
-
@elise4270 - yes, that's exactly what I was thinking ... I'm tired. I will just do 1 mile tomorrow for streak! Then hopefully be rested up for Thursday!
1 -
@dkabambe Good luck with the knee. If you have pain while running, stop, rest a couple days, then try again. Repeat process as needed I have a pain left of my right kneecap since 2 Sundays ago when I kneeled on a hard floor then stood back up. The pain has come and gone, and never bothered me while running. I've felt it today off and on moving about my office. No clue what's up with that....2
-
12/1 - 4.2 miles
12/2 - 35 min elliptical (hills), weight machines
12/3 - rest (too busy with kids' bday party!)
12/4 - 4.32 miles
12/5 - 35 min elliptical (hills), weight machines
12/6 - 4.21 miles
Conpleted: 12.73 miles/ 40 miles (31%)2 -
It is now 30 mins from go-time and I am not feeling it at all. I woke up this morning with a cramped up glute and I stretched it and felt fine all day but the last hour it's started to kill me. And my LEFT knee has started to throb and that knee has been fine. This chair is killing me and I probably would feel fine after being UP an hour but I don't have an hour to be up and feel better. Aargh. At this point, I'm probably driving home, putting on the running clothes and just seeing how it goes. At least 1 mile for the streak but I'll be close to home if that's all I want to do. I'm not feeling getting out on the trail and having a crappy run with an audience. LOL1
