Goals:
Merry Fitmas Exercise Challenge (12WBT Runners Connect FB Group): 30 minutes of exercise every day in December.
Brooks North Pole Run Club Challenge (Strava): Run 6 hrs over 12 days from December 5 - December 16. DONE!
12 Days of Xmas Run Streak (Me): Run a minimum of 5 km every day from December 25 - January 5.
Tried running at an easy pace for a change today, aiming at 6:30/km. I was spot on, according to Garmin! It felt so good, I want to try even slower tomorrow!
My long runs lately have had me battling to keep up the crazy pace. It was nice today to run without huffing and puffing.1 -
Took a week off from running or doing ANYTHING after my little car incident, but felt better enough to go out for a short run on Sunday. I’m struggling with getting over 7miles, and think I might have a psychological barrier against it. So I’m going to keep my regular runs short (3-5miles) for a while, to get used to that regular run, and then try just running for the hell of it, without focusing on distance. If I give myself 20 minute ‘laps’ and see how many of those I can do, on a nice day in the woods that will hopefully get me through the barrier. I so want to feel comfortable signing up for a half in April.
Trying to plan in runs when there’s lots of festive things and drinks with friends doesn’t help either. Am off to see my folks over Christmas, at least I have my sister’s dog as an excuse to get out for a walk (he expects it from me each time he sees me now), and it will be good to see the sea. I’m dropping my goal target down to 30 miles – so only 10 miles to go.

@shanaber - SF HM sounds nice! My daughter and I are trying to plan another HM for later in the year so maybe I'll talk to her about that one. I was looking for some type of dog Christmas shirt on Amazon (like I really need that!) and saw a Merry Vizmas Vizsla Ugly Christmas Sweater Tee and thought of you and Hobbes.
Since I did some unintentional "brownie/Christmas cookie carb loading" yesterday I thought I should try to go a little longer this morning, but the bottom of one foot was bugging me, so went for 6. Need to get some longer ones in at some point. HM is not very far off ... afraid to look at calendar and count the weeks! My Garmin Fenix3 doesn't seem to want to sync this morning, so looking into that.

Sorry this is super late. I started a new job so I've been super busy with that, plus getting ready for Christmas.
Notes from the Dallas Half Marathon...New Personal Record!!!
I had to get up at 4:15 in the morning to get ready, eat, and get to Dallas with plenty of time to find parking, figure out where to go, gear check, use the bathroom, warm up, and get in line.
We arrived in Dallas by 6:15 with plenty of time to spare. The "Dallas Ball" (Reunion Tower) had special lighting that was fun to see. The light display rotated between a runner, 26.2 and 13.1. We followed a car with a 26.2 sticker and found parking that was just 2 blocks away. It was in the 50’s but it was foggy and damp with a strong SSW wind. I was glad I brought my throw away sweatshirt. I wore capri pants, a tank top, arms warmers, a throw away sweatshirt, and some throw away gloves. I have to say it was perfect. If there was no wind, I probably could have done well without the arm warmers, but I was perfectly comfortable during the race…never too hot or too cold.
This was my 1st really big race. They had over 20,000 racers taking part in the marathon, half marathon, and relay race. I was in Corral A which got to start 1st. However, it still took about a minute to get to the start line once the fireworks went off to start the race.
My starting goal pace was 8:15, and it took a while to get up to that pace due to the crowds. It was fun once we got to an area where there were spectators. The FC Dallas spectator area was my favorite with their drums and cheering. I enjoyed reading all the signs. The 1st 5 miles were super easy. At mile 5, I was so confident. Then came mile 6…which was uphill, uphill, and uphill some more. All that confidence went right out the window. (Mental note…now that the hamstring is better…run more hills!!) This was the area where we were running through the wealthy neighborhoods with big fancy mansions.
At some point, we split from those doing the full marathon. There were a few spectators here and there, but it was more of an industrial area. After finishing all of the hills, I did have a few 2nd winds, but they didn’t last too long. At Mile 12, I was really tired, but I mentally kept pushing myself, forcing my legs to continue moving fast into a strong headwind. Finally, I saw a sign that said there were 600 meters to go. I somehow found some strength to go even faster. I saw my husband and son cheering me on in the home stretch, and I loved seeing their smiles! I could see the time displayed at the finish line (which was the gun time) and it just pushed me to give it my all. I finished with a chip time of 1:46:23 / 8:07 minute mile pace. This was a new PR for me. I finished my last Half Marathon in 1:48:10. I wasn’t sure if I could do it since I haven’t done any speed work since my last Half Marathon due to the hamstring injury. On another note, my hamstring felt great! Absolutely no pain, twinges, or anything!!
The following are my race stats:
Chip Time: 1:46:23 / 8:07 min/mile pace
655 out of 6,706 total racers (Top 10%)
155 out of 3,569 female racers (Top 4%)
17 out of 505 in AG (Top 3%)

Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW
Today's notes: 6.17 miles at 9:41 pace. nasty blowing snow today, so I made the run quicker than the 10:04 that was assigned.
Side note: My coach thinks that 100 miles a month is too much. trying to find a polite way to say that I think that's silly, considering that I've averaged 130 for the last 7 months. It could be the XT she's adding in, but something just feels wrong about having close to 40% of my miles be my long runs, when I'm only running 100 miles a month. Will have to see.0 -
@BeeerRunner - that's fantastic! The Dallas half was my first big race, too. Didn't do quite as well as you, though.2
-
@BeeerRunner - congrats! Awesome pictures and time!
@MNLittleFinn - nasty blowing snow, oh my gosh, can't imagine that!
Just realized my ticker is way off. It said 41 and when I looked at endomondo it says 54 for the month, and Strava ... well ... I can never seem to see the monthly totals in Strava, only weekly. So I added it up manually and it should be 52.5. Not sure why tickerFactory has been so troublesome the past few months. I was wondering how if I was doing a Holiday Streak, my mileage was so low.
Anybody ladies every try Ryka shoes for running? They are so inexpensive it seems like they couldn't be that great. But with cycling, the seat I use was really cheap and I liked it so much better than seats that cost 3-4 times as much. So maybe the same would be true with these. I've got 3 shoes in rotation but need to rotate one pair out soon. And, I've got a credit with roadrunner.com that I want to use up. My favorite pair are the Brooks Glycerin 14s but since I wear wide, they only come in one color and I find it confusing to have two that are exactly the same.

Very brisk run this morning - temp said 9 degrees but felt colder. Beautiful though - ran around the lake and it was so gorgeous with clear skies and sun. Because I'm on vacation, I followed that run up with a big breakfast, including a bloody mary! It was a sight to behold, stuffed with all the goodies. I figure it counts as a salad. Now I'm rolling around in my hotel feeling full and getting ready to go out for my XC ski lesson in a couple of hours. I'm so excited for that.4 -

Grrrrrr Grrrrrr Grrrrrrrrrrrr GRRRRRRRRRRRR waited 3 weeks for new shoes to arrive thanks to messy courier then received the wrong size....
And prob now having to organize a shipment back
And no new shoes for a while, have to use the old ones
I hate Xmas.0 -
@Elise4270: Yeah. I think she caught me about the marathon when I was/am vulnerably crazy on purpose. I've been sleeping on the couch too long (the contents of my closet are on my bed because the bedroom closet is the access to the bathtub's plumbing). Fun times. My life is currently chaos! It will so totally be worth it. They are installing the radiant heat floor mats today, will be back Thursday to lay the tile and grout it, and I guess the bathroom people will be back Friday to finish up. It looks like I might have a new bathroom by Sunday after all. I re-gifted myself a sense of normalcy for Christmas. haha
On the workout front, I had a very sore and very slow 2.25 mile random hill treadmill jog this morning. Spin class Sunday morning and a circuit training class last night both kicked my butt. My hamstrings hate me right now.

It has felt like running in a sauna the past few days, as speedwork in 90% humidity with my team last night wasn't my idea of fun. Still, continuing to rack up the miles the past week (on both my bike & legs) as I'm closing in on 2016 miles (and will likely hit about 2050 by the end of the year). Still, it'll take a heavy next 12 days (8/day) to hit my monthly target, but I'll give it a shot as I committed to run the half-marathon leg of a half-ironman relay in 3 weeks and could use the boost in fitness and reduction of my mid-section.
12/2 - 7 miles
12/3 - 5 miles
12/4 - 4 miles (warmup + 5K race)

Catching up on a weeks worth of posts -
@honunui - Congrads on the new treadmill!
@mobycarp - Great trophies, solid race, and a good way to award them!
@louubelle16 - Congrads on the PR at your half
@BeeerRunner - Congrads on the PR at your half - always nice seeing those signs near the end of races. Speedwork is always nice if you can fit it in, but being healthy and getting in lots of base miles is usually the key to a solid performance.
@stoshew71 - Glad you've gotten back on the horse! Good luck with your derby racing.
@patrikc333 - Clip-ins take a while to get used to, but for my first setup (started with mountain style SPD before switching to Garmin Vector Look Keo pedals/cleats), going to the SH-55 cleats with the tension dialed back made it much more manageable. Also wear gloves for the first while, as those slow-motion side-plants usually damage my hands and ego more than anything else.0 -

Not for running, but I do have a pair of Rykas for walking. They work just fine for that. My only gripe is that they didn't come in size 10.5, which is what I wear for running. So I had to get a 10, and it feels a little cramped compared to my running shoes. (My normal shoe size is a 10, although I'm finding I much prefer the 10.5, but most women's shoes don't come in 10.5.)
Lately though, since I have replaced my running shoes once already, I've been using the old running pair for walking.
