This is a spin off thread to this one-http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10520032/10-portions-of-fruit-and-veg-a-day/p1
and is based off of this article
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/feb/23/five-day-10-portions-fruit-veg-cut-early-death
A few of us decided to challenge ourselves to try and hit the daily recommended amount of vegetables and fruit:10 servings ie 800grams. If this is something you'd like to challenge yourself to do, then please join in!
The Challenge
-aim to eat 800g of vegetables and fruit each day, in any combination, Monday, February 27th-Friday, March 3rd
-what counts? I'll be going by these guidelines http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/5ADAY/Pages/Whatcounts.aspx
-don't worry if you can't hit 800g! This is a fun, low pressure challenge to encourage us to eat more veggies and fruit
If you're going to join in, please post in this thread with updates as the week progresses. Do you have a menu planned? Are you trying new vegetables and/or fruit? Have you found a new recipe that you're going to try? Was shopping for all your produce different than from how you normally shop? Feel free to answer any of these questions (or none at all lol).
And then if you want you can keep a daily, running total with how many grams of vegetables and fruit you're eating!

Welcome aboard1 -
I'm in! I've been a bit slack on the old veggies the last couple of weeks.
I'll have to try and work out how many grams of veg are in my eggplant zucchini and lentil bake for lunch, and my chicken veggie soup for dinner. I made both from scratch but logged by number of servings instead of weight.2 -
I headed to the store this afternoon to get the things I have planned for this week (I've made a tentative menu plan). I'm not a big fresh produce buyer but just the way things worked out with my menu I ended up buying mostly fresh. And dang! That's not cheap I spent around $25 on produce, just for myself. That's 1/4 of my entire weekly grocery budget for my family of 5! Part of the problem was that I realized I'm pretty picky when it comes to vegetables and fruit. Almost all the sale items I didn't like so I ended up paying full price for several things. With it being off season here in MI, that added up quick. If this is something I keep doing long term, I really need to expand my horizons and try new things.
Hopefully I now have 4,000 grams worth of produce in the house to get me through Friday-I really don't want to go back to the store lol.1 -
Count me in. I've been eating like crap lately, so this should be the motivation I need.6

I'm in! I was easily hitting this target in January...then this month slipped off the healthy wagon a bit!
Back on track tomorrow with a food delivery packed full of delicious fruit and veggies!2 -
Glad to see so many joining in!1
-
I started it this morning. I had half a banana, a grapefruit and a blood orange.
Do you worry about all the sugar you're eating with fruits?1 -

I'll be tracking everything this week as part of the challenge but otherwise I don't track sugar intake at all. Unless you have a medical condition where you need to limit sugar intake, there's no reason to worry about it2 -
So, going to try and keep my IF schedule of two meals, but I am going to add an afternoon snack every day this week to fit everything in.
I don't usually track anything besides my calorie intake (on a piece of paper), but this week I'm logging everything on MFP and at the end of the day will report here how many grams of veggies and fruit I ate, along with my calorie/macro breakdown etc.1 -
I'm in!
Doesn't mean I can do it but I'll give it a shot2 -
I want to give this a try! I just went grocery shopping and hopefully have enough fruits and veggies to make it all week.1
-
I'm cutting calories due to having to decrease my activity, but I'll be in. Why not go for broke!1
-
Yay, glad to see everyone jumping in! I just started defrosting the ground beef I'm going to be adding to my epic taco salad Will be breaking my daily fast at around 11:30am and then it's game on lol!1

thanks for the reply1 -
Note to self: 200g of shredded iceberg lettuce is a LOT of lettuce5
-
I'm in. I haven't been great at eating enough veg lately so this challenge may give me the push I need.
So off to the store. Hope there's a produce sale.1 -
In...but...is it cheating if 350 of the calories are from one ginormous honeycrisp? Just seems a touch decadent, when I could be self-flagellating with kale.5

I'm in the UK so I've just made dinner.
I've totalled 972 grams today. How good is that?
I had
125g blueberries
98g banana for breakfast
89g carrot
83g of pickled onions for lunch
209g cauliflower
104g mushrooms
85g Kale
33g spring onions
71g white onion
50g garden peas
25g chick peas
As curry with cauliflower rice for dinner6 -
I have decided that lunch for the duration will be a dip made from ranch dressing mix dumped into greek yogurt (get to eat a lot that way) served with crudite. Protein and lots of vegetables that way and it's fun to eat.5

Great job! I've never heard of pickled onions before, sounds intriguing!3 -
I'm behind. I only eat two meals a day, generally. Plan on having a huge salad with my protein for dinner. I used to eat salads everyday but fell out of the habit. I like this challenge.2

Someone needs to work on her martini skills.6 -
Yesterday's numbers
62g banana with breakfast
220g blood orange with lunch
2 cups of vegetable soup - didn't weigh it
100g of carrots with dinner
Total 382g plus the vegetable soup.1 -
I just now saw this thread and I'm nearing the end of supplies from my last grocery store run, so officially participating isn't probably feasible. However, that being said, I just glanced at my (mostly) pre-logged diary for today and it's sitting at 716g of fruit and veg with 400 calories left to spare. At least I know the challenge wouldn't be unreasonable for me.2

Do you not get pickled onions? I love them, so low calorie and I like wrapping slices of ham around them.

I might have a problem with calories during the challenge. I'm stuffed and only on 1000 calories and it's almost bedtime.
I'll have to force some nut butter or ice cream down me

800 g a day eh? Let's see how I do today.
so far I have:
200 g of rutabaga
104 g of asparagus.
76 g mandarin orange
104 g Brussels's sprouts
Will check back in at the end of the day.1 -
So I decided to make my first meal filled with mostly veg and some fruit. It added up to a whopping 654 grams of mushrooms, zucchini, red bell peppers, and 1 orange. I only have about 150 grams left for the rest of the day.
I really thought this might be more difficult.4 -

Never seen these before (and I've never had a martini lol), but I'm now on the lookout for them
Looks like everyone is doing great today! I had my menu plan for today all figured out/grams calculated, but after a busy afternoon of errands/kid's school stuff I'm not feeling like cooking at all tonight sigh... I'm also going to be painting our laundry room yet tonight and just feel like eating Oreos for supper lol. Will check back in with my totals in a bit!2 -
Done for the night, except for an evening cup of hot cocoa, so here's my day one totals:
-grams of veggies/fruit: 665g (a bit short of the 800g goal)
-menu today:
Meal #1-taco salad: iceberg lettuce (sooo much lettuce lol), Roma tomato, onion, seasoned beef, black olives, shredded co-jack, hot sauce, California style French dressing, corn chips
Snack-sugar free vanilla pudding cup with blueberries, a banana and one graham cracker mixed in
Meal #2-can of Progresso Light Enchilada chicken soup with hot sauce, sour cream and corn chips added; raw red bell pepper slices with Hidden Valley bacon ranch dressing for dip
Misc- 2 Lifesaver mints and then a cup of low calorie hot cocoa (Swiss Miss Light packet, mixed with water, Davinci 0 calorie raspberry syrup and then a serving of whipped cream)
-calories from veggies and fruit: 265
-total calorie intake today: 1,472
-macros breakdown: 158g carb/71g fat/48g protein/18g fiber/76g sugar1
