I found some wonderful pitas at Vons. Masada brand "kosher pita" - they are incredibly light in cals for what they are, and not a diet food or anything. 10-12 seconds each side under the grill and they come to life in a wonderful way. I make little pizzas out of them, sandwiches, or just use as bread sides.

I also always have some good high calorie bars around (and in my bag) in case I get between meals and mess up on timing. A 250 cal Cliff bar will be a better choice than almost anything I would hungrily forage for on the go and will actually replace a meal rather than just add calories and still leave me hungry.

how dark? I'm up to 90% which is fabulous, actually. I have tried some other brands that were less % but just were not good. Lindt is definitely the way to go for dark chocolate. <3

Creamette 150 pasta - high fiber, good taste, and satisfactory mouth-feel. 13g fiber for a 2 oz serving, this stuff is responsible for getting me from 11g fiber/day to over 25.

90% lean ground beef - affordable lean protein, actually, pork and chicken also. My parents, whom I cook for, really like meat. When I live in my own I eat 90% vegetarian but lean meats are a good compromise.

Aldi's Greek yogurt cheaper by far than the other brands and still delicious.

For me, I mix it up all the time...so it's more *categories* than foods

greens (spinach, romaine, arugula, spring mix) - I try to stay away from mixes with red lettuces, since they wilt and rot faster
fruits - usually a few bananas for smoothies, whatever is in season and on sale, plus berries for quick snacks
meats - I buy in bulk from whole foods, stick to specials and always get a 2+ pound bag of frozen cod fillets

    For specific things?

    meat and vegetable stock
    eggs
    almond milk
    canned tomato
    coffee
    cream
