Now watermelon is still delicious summery and fits my macros but I was shocked when my serving was like 200 calories.I don't know why I thought a bowl would be like 50 calories I mainly posted due to how off my mental guess was. I can't be the only person ever amazed at serving vs Calories.
Are you weighing your watermelon now? Because you must take some pretty big bites and use big bowls (or pile your watermelon pretty high in a smaller bowl). 100 g of watermelon would be about two-thirds of a cup of diced or balled melon; 50 calories would be a little over a full cup of diced or balled melon. That seems like a pretty good calorie bargain to me. I can eat well over half a pound of watermelon, and still be under 100 calories.
Yeah, I find that you can eat a lot of watermelon or other melon for not that many calories.
I don't really love watermelon, though (I know, I know, sorry!) -- I think it's okay, but there are so many fruits I like better. I always end up getting a number of small watermelons in my CSA box over the summer, though.
I had 600 grams of watermelon as part of my lunch (I foolishly bought a whole watermelon and now have to eat it all up -- my husband doesn't care for it). It was a LOT of watermelon. And it was still under 200 calories. I agree that melon is a pretty good "deal" for the calories.
But once I finish this one, that will probably be it for the year.1 -
God I love watermelon. I eat it every chance I get.3

Lucky. Watermelon is not properly in season here. They do sell some, but we don't usually buy until they're nicely ripe and sweet. Watermelon picked too early is tasteless even if it looks ripe. luckily they go for as cheap as 15 cents per kilo in season because they're grown locally in abundance and no price inflation from import and transport. Plus it's always guaranteed we're getting something fresh and not artificially ripened. The wait is worth it.
I'm also looking forward to local green grapes and the fruits of our peach tree, which are the best peaches I have ever had. Sometimes I wish I could just send everyone some of our summer fruits. I guarantee once people try them no one will be skimping on their 5 a day. My uncle in Russia specifically asks mom every year to bring him grapes every time she visits because when he visited 20 years ago he hasn't been able to find anything like it anywhere since.
On the flip side, I don't get to eat berries because they don't grow well in this climate.1 -

I'm pretty sure this watermelon wasn't local, but I got lucky with it -- it is really good. I do love local fruits -- I had some local pears for the first time last year and they were amazing! Can't wait for that time of year (it was late summer here) to roll around again.0 -
Yeah, we won't get watermelon for a while (northern Illinois). This was the first weekend for strawberries, so it's super early for fruit in general, which is mostly a mid to late summer thing.
On other fruits, I love pears so much.1 -

For the benefits you get from some food, its worth it. For me, it is way better to have a bowl of watermelon than a piece of cake. I don't mean all you IIFYM folks, but for people who want to choose more nutritious food vs a treat.
Lol wut?
I mean the IIFYM folks will say any food is good. So im putting in a disclaimer that some people are selective about the foods they eat and so comparing watermelon to some candy treat - the watermelon would be worth it nutritionally.

Most IIFYM people are selective about what they eat and care about nutrition and all that. Rejecting good/bad as a label for food doesn't preclude that.
Cake and watermelon have different macros and calories, also.7 -

Something wrong with your maths - how can 100g be 2/3 of a cup if 50 gm is bit over a full cup??
Although it matters not to me as I cant stand water melon, tastes like soggy straw.
Sorry, all you water melon lovers.
You misread -- I said 100 grams was 2/3 of a cup, but 50 calories (kcals) was a bit over a full cup.0 -

You so clearly don't understand what IIFYM actually means. By definition, people who are doing IIFYM properly are being selective about their food choices to ensure their nutritional needs are met. Probably more so than people who just blindly eat what they consider to be 'healthy'. I love watermelon, and eat it every day when it's in season, but some times a chocolate bar may be more appropriate to meeting my nutritional requirements. Context.6 -
Watermelon is actually pretty low in calories compared to other foods. I don't like watermelon, but I see no reason not to eat it unless it doesn't fill you up at all and/or will make you go over your daily calorie limit somehow. 100g does not look like 2 bites to me...
It looks like 4-5 large bites or 7-8 of my sized bites. I would think 200g (60 calories) could be a decent snack.

Do you know what IIFYM stands for?
Personally, I'm a die-hard CI<CO person, who doesn't do the macro thing ... and I will say that any food is good. In fact, that's the beauty of CI<CO.

that's a really sad amount of water melon-

There is a watermelon thread every year. It's the sign of summer here on MFP.4

Agree. Do I only have room for X number of carbs but already hit my fat goal?? Watermelon. Do I have room for X amount of fats and carbs? Cake. Easy. Depending on the circumstance, all foods fit.4 -

but it also has alot of sugar....

Watermelon and tomato salad with feta is a great thing, too. A later-in-the-summer-than-now thing, where I live, but one I do look forward to.0 -

If you've gotten you nutrition for the day and can have the piece of cake without going into a calorie surplus, what's the problem? You don't get any extra credit for more "nutritious" watermelon...

If you like spicy and sweet, watermelon with chopped minced jalapeno and some lime juice is also a great summer salad.2 -

Speaking as someone who has zero medical issues related to the consumption of sugar, I have to ask, "So what that it contains sugar? It's a fruit, so if course it does. What's the problem with that?"4 -

Actually, that serving is only 30 kcal (scale reads 100 g). So you could have two to three of those servings, and still be under 100 kcal.1 -

This thread got me craving watermelon, so I bought some even though it's not at its best yet here. I had as much last night as I wanted (not quite a quarter of a mediumish melon) and it was only 76 calories.
I wonder if OP was including the rind in weighing, to feel like watermelon was high calorie. (Yes, I know, even 76 kcals is a lot when you think it's zero.)

For me the best part of watermelon is that it tastes best on very hot days when I am thirsty. So I love to spend an hour outside exercising when it is in the 30s, come in and eat a kg of watermelon for only 300 calories without drinking anything. Sooo good.
I have two watermelons chilling in my fridge that I got at Trader Joes for $3 each yesterday. Hoping for warm weather this weekend.
I also bought some silicone bowl covers that I got from an Amazon flash sale. They are kind of rubbish for covering bowls, but they work perfect for covering up my watermelon in the fridge after slicing off a ring.0 -

Where do people get the idea that flexible dieters eat nothing but cake? Wanting cake sometimes doesn't mean I don't eat watermelon... The two are so different that it isn't really an either/or choice. It sounds as silly as "it's way better to have an apple than chicken breast", yeah, both taste differently and serve different purposes. I'm not going to eat cake when I want something refreshing. I'm only going to eat cake when I want cake (which isn't often), and watermelon doesn't cut it in that case.
I particularly appreciate this thread today because I had watermelon for lunch and I'm going to have some of my husband's birthday cake later today. Watermelon AND cake in the same day, it can be done.
Here's the especially weird thing: Watermelon has some micronutrients that cake doesn't have and cake has some micronutrients that watermelon doesn't have. And they're both enjoyable, just in different ways. It's almost like it doesn't make sense to act like two different foods are somehow locked in a death match where one gets to stay in the diet and the other must be rejected forever . . .
You can't have both. They will duel to the death inside your body and take you with them. I will miss your insightful and inspiring posts. Even your awesome and likeable ones too. Be brave, janejellyroll.9
