Volume Eaters Thread

I have recently come to the conclusion that volume eating is best suited for me. Eating mainly vegetarian means I can eat copious amounts of food and stay in my calorie goal. Are there others out there who do the same? Let's exchange ideas. Here is what I ate today:
Breakfast, large shake with 2 cups spinach, almond milk, protein powder ice and water. Plus a slice of flax bread with almond butter and a sliced zucinni.
Lunch - one bag steamed frozen broccoli, 2 diced peppers, sprinkle of nuts and raisins
Snack- Apple, orange and cantaloupe
Dinner- 2 large zuchinni, one large onion, two packages portobello mushrooms cooked in vegetable broth and 1tbs butter, edited to add 3oz tempeh
Dessert - one cup almond milk with 3 tbs chia seeds (chia pudding) and 1/2 scoop protein powder
This was a LOT of food and I was happily full (not overstuffed) at every meal.
I find eating this way keeps me from snacking -- or worse binging. I finally broke through a 6 month plateau.
But it does make eating out difficult unless you have a mini-meal before or after. Anyone have any thoughts on this eating style?

I eat this way. I go through a bag of lettuce or spinach every time I eat a salad. Lean meats so I can have more like 6 oz instead of 4, pretty much no bread or grains to save room for a treat or a giant meal.
I have gotten used to being a volume eater at a restaurant. If I'm really trying to stick to goals and it's not a fancy restaurant, I will literally order TWO salads. Like two of the garden salads and a side. Or I'll order the sandwich and a salad but as them not to bring it out on bread and I'll combine the ingredients.64 -
I think this is good-do whatever you need to do to be happy28

I go through periods where I want to eat lots of volume. My go to foods are broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, strawberries, honeydew melon, canteloupe, watermelon.
I also use egg whites to bulk a mealot up.
I am kinda over leafy greens atm - I have consumed so much of it over the years. I do wish I liked mushrooms since they are so low in calories!27 -
I like volume eating too. I love big salads! I'll cook a whole zucchini, 1/2 package of mushrooms, tomato or whatever else I have on hand in some soup mix for flavor and add some protein. I posted a picture of my big dinner bowl tonight on my wall. Protein fluff is great for dessert or snack.24
-
I forgot about tomatoes! Sometimes I make a LARGE salad with tomatoes, cucumber, lemon juice, pepper, salt, basil and a small amount of olive oil. My dealer (BIL) should be getting tomatoes in surplus soon.29

If more people ate a lot more vegetables like in this thread, there would be a lot more successful people reaching their weight goals...or most likely not needing to worry in the 1st place.
If the majority of one's diet is filling, nutrient dense foods (lots of vegetables & fruit) and you don't fill in the rest with calorie bombs, you're going to do well.113 -
I am definitely a volume eater. Usually about 90% of my meals are vegetables...and a lot of them. I have never counted calories and never needed to because of this.37

Oh, definitely a volume veggie eater here. I tend to 2-3 cups of arugula or broccoli, or something of the like, with most meals. Most of the folks who follow Dr. Furhman eat high volume vegetables as well. There's even a term for it: "volumetrics" from a while back. http://bmedia.fooducate.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/400-Calories.jpg21

i am definitely like this. i need volume to keep from binging on crap. i have often bought 2 garden salads at a restaurant and can easily eat a full bag of greens in a salad. i wish i was satisfied on less, but sadly i'm not!28

Chicken sausages.13

Today's snack is a huge bowl of melon (like a whole cantaloupe) with strawberries and a sprinkle of ground flax.
I also just ordered nutritional yeast (no clue what it tastes like) to sprinkle on broccoli, cauliflower, roast squash, etc.
Thanks everyone for chiming in. Nice to know there are others who embrace eating a LOT!25 -
I'm definitely a volume eater. I don't like to graze and i hate having multiple "small meals" a day. Sitting down to a large meal makes me happy.
Some things i like to do:- 4-5 Cups frozen stir fry veggies in 1 tbs olive oil - at the end i top with 3-4 cloves of sliced garlic and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce or tamari
- What i call my "big-*kitten* salad" including: 4 cups of romaine, spinach, red onion, carrots, cherry tomato, 2 hard boiled eggs chopped up, small brocolli florets, and 3-4 tablespoons of classic ranch dressing
- cauliflower oats- I make about a half a cup (dry) rolled oats combined with riced cauliflower, some splenda, some cinnamon, and then i usually top it with pb2 and zero calorie raspberry jam. It just adds bulk and tastes like normal oats. I've also heard of people adding squash for a similar effect.
- I like to make quorn (or gardein if i can find it) "chickn" cutlets that i cook in the oven along with 2 zuchinnis, 1 yellow squash, thinly sliced red onion, cherry tomatoes, olive oil, lemon juice, and oregano.
- I like to make greek salads with cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, feta, a touch of olive oil.
- I like to make large hearty soups and stews (lentils, tortilla soups, etc.)
- I love to eat a "fruit plate", a "snack plate" with crunchy veggies, etc. etc. etc.
- I also love to eat pasta, so sometimes i'll cut it with a spiralized zuchinni along with 100g (dry) spaghetti. This method makes about 2 1/2 bowls full of pasta for about 600-700 calories.

Thank you for this thread! I recently discovered the term volume eater for myself and I'm getting good ideas here. In addition to the giant salads, I add a whole bag of coleslaw mix to my Asian dishes and just cook it along with the chicken and other veggies. That right there makes for a huge meal!32

I am also a huge volume eater.
I tend to eat a good amount of chicken, eggs with egg whites, and fish:
My big *kitten* salad: 2-3 cups spinach, 90g of corn (1 serving), 120g of black beans (1 serving), 1 Roma tomato, 1/4 cup cheese (optional), 4-6 tbsp of salsa, 1/4 cup of jasmine rice, 75-100g of avocado, 2 tbsp of Hidden valley avocado ranch; optional meat: tuna fish, white fish, chicken.
I make a egg wrap out of eggs (no tortilla): 1 egg, 138g of egg whites, 1oz of milk. Add 1/2 tbsp of butter in pan, poor in mixture and cover. And flip once bottom is cooked. Fill wrap with cook veggies (onions and peppers are my favorite), add in 1.5-3 oz of ham or canadian bacon, 28g of shredded cheese, and top with salsa; optional - top with 75-100g of avocado.
I tend to get a lot of protein recipes from www.theprotienchef.co . I found a good amount of lower calorie, protein based recipes from there.

I eat a lot of veggies too. I add extra to every recipe I make. I was pretty much brought up this way. In fact, the last time we went to a brunch buffet, my sister in law just shook her head that my brother and I would prefer to fill our plates with veggies over all of the other rich, sauce-laden dishes they had there.
When my husband is out of town, I will saute some shrimp in garlic and eat it along with an entire bag of California Blend veggies. Breakfast on the weekend is often a hash with shredded sweet potato and whatever veggies I have in the fridge, topped with an egg or two.
Don't get me wrong, I love meat, cheese, potatoes and all the other yummy foods, but I have to balance it out with lots of veggies. The last time I was out of town for the weekend and my meals just worked out such that there were very little veggies included. I came home and made the biggest veggie omelet I could imagine because I needed my veggie fix!
And I agree with @rybo , if everyone just tried to jam more veggies in their diet, we would have way more thin people in the world!24 -
I also prefer large volumes of food, but I don't really eat fruits or veggies, so it is something I struggle with. Following along for, hopefully, some good ideas.
My best addition to this thread, though it's not "real food" is probably going to be protein fluff. Basically, 1 scoop of casein, 10ish oz of a liquid, and a little xanthan gum, then whip the hell out of it... ends up having the consistency very similar to mousse or whipped cream.

Do you know how well this works with a whey or blended protein? Because that looks good!13 -
I've never tried it with whey, but I've heard that it just doesn't whip up as light and airy (less volume). That makes sense based on the consistency of a whey shake vs a casein shake, but again, I haven't tried it.5

I've done it with whey and while it works, i think that obviously pure casein has a thicker and more pleasant texture. You might need to use more xantham to get your to work.
either way, despite having made this many many times... i'm actually not really a fan of fluff. it looks cool, but man it is hard for me to eat.6 -

Yea... it's definitely not as good as it sounds. But it is filling, and that's generally why I make it. Eating 2/3 of a bowl of that stuff is usually enough to make me feel full (bloated?) to the point where I actually don't want to eat anymore, and I can't say that very often.
It's also good as a a topping for things like pie, cookies, cake, etc. I'll have some vanilla with a brownie or angel food cake, and it's enough to make me feel like I've eating A LOT more than I actually have. It doesn't satisfy my sweet tooth, but it satisfies my inner glutton.
Because it whips up into so much volume, the taste ends up being a bit more bland than I would have expected. It also ends up being somewhere between chilled and room temperature, so it's almost like eating, I dunno what... shaving foam, maybe??? I'm going to try adding some crushed ice next time to see if I can keep it colder.8 -

You can try to put it in a frosted cup or bowl.7 -
Yes, this is my preference! This week I did a bunch of rice and veggie mashups but minimal rice and finely chopped cauli and broccoli to bulk out the dish. I'll also do a bed of arugula/baby kale or whatever under any main meal, my zucchini ribbons and bolognese or whatever, to get full. I love the tomato salad idea, I might do that today.6

I make and then throw it in the freezer for a half hour or so.
My breakfast lately has been a serving of plain non fat Greek yogurt with about 12g of protein powder mixed in for flavor. It's somewhere close to 200cals for a cereal size bowl full of it. Very filling...sits like a brick...keeps me full all morning.
Lunch is a ton of salad veggies with 6oz of chicken breast. I throw in 50g of chopped up grapes, which gives it taste and a bit of sweet so that I don't need any dressing on it.
Between these two meals I make a big dent in my daily protein, and I'm stuffed until dinner.15 -

Kinda looks like the sugar free dessert at Sweet Tomatoes/Souplantation.
I may have to try this, with something like sugar free chocolate syrup or something.3 -

That's why I don't like this recipe. If you use water and ICE or frozen fruit, it comes out cooler. Ice is a game change. It actually fluffs better this way too.6 -
Guys, when I eat Fage I eat the whole 460 gram medium tub. I don't screw around with volume lol. Currently eating 4 chicken hot dogs.21

@rainbowbow - this sounds fantastic! Is riced cauliflower just the top part in a food processor? Do you just mix the cauliflower into the prepared oatmeal at room temperature? Im trying this tomorrow!

it's something that I have been doing to a degree lately. it's pretty remarkable that I can eat a pound of veggies and it's only 50-60 calories. I feel nearly uncomfortably full afterwards for HOURS yet I really didn't eat much in terms of calories. That paired with some good protein can nearly keep me full all day where I'd have to remind myself I still need to eat.20
