An example of what you're referring to would be helpful. You mean like this?

(I had to look for one with no male bits exposed  )

The Discobolus isn't a god of course; he's an athlete. To me he doesn't look all that different from modern athletes who engage in the same kind of sports.

Or maybe he might as well be a god. Ancient Greeks depicted their gods as idealized, athletic young men -- if they were supposed to be older you just slapped a beard onto their faces -- and it wouldn't be too surprising if sculptors worked from life at least occasionally.

Perhaps they just look small because the muscles are SO big.

Nah. Anabolic steroids and Photoshop weren't invented yet when the Greek Gods existed.

[ETA:] And they should give that dude his lats back.

His lats are fine, just insert a little high.

As for the question...dunno...won't stop me trying to attain the look regardless of the answer.

I've just been reading an article about how classical sculptures reinforce racism and white supremacy.

Worth considering, how our view of no-longer painted sculptures helps to reinforce a 'white-is-pure' ideal.

edited to add - the use of white marble to carve many of the sculptures (or at least the ones that remain, others may have been terracotta and bronze and have not survived) was most likely due to the fact that it is a readily available material easy to carve.

Ew. I find this grotesque..not my preference nada.
I think it's BS to say that- just because it's not your preference doesn't mean it's gross- just not your flavor.

Considering these are both extremely modern depiction- meh.

They look nice and were adequate for the roll- But- eh- I would have preferred someone a little bit bigger.

Not for me but I guess I don't really have a body type, but I apparently have a personality type I am attracted too. My husband is like a big grumpy old bear and I find him attractive so...to each their own?

I must be getting old. This debate seems silly. To me, anyone who is trim for his build and in good health is doing well.
