So, Friday was my mid-week medium-long run, obviously not mid-week though, since I did my speed workout on Wednesday instead. Oh well, lol.
Yesterday was a 4 mile recovery run, followed by an extra intense Zumba class.
Today was another distance PR long run, this time by 2 miles. I was a little uncertain how it would go, considering the high-mileage Friday, and pretty active Saturday, and given the fact that the longest I'd run prior to this was 16 miles last Sunday. Ended up going even better than I anticipated! It was around 80°F w/around 50% humidity, but I paced myself well. I made it a point to start taking a couple sips of my water after each mile in the beginning, even though I wasn't thirsty yet. I'm trying to work on spreading out my hydration so I don't get sloshy belly, lol. Took in a half serving of Jelly Belly Extreme Beans and 1.66 servings of Clif Bloks over the course of the run. Ended up feeling stronger than I anticipated by the final mile and managed to make mile 18 my fastest mile of the run.
For whatever reason, 18 miles was a much bigger milestone for me, mentally, than the last 3 Sundays when I ran 14 miles, then 15, and then 16 for the first time ever. Maybe because it's so close to 20, or maybe because it was a 2-mile increase instead of 1. But, with the way this run went, and how strong I felt at the finish, it was a great confidence-building run for me. I also passed 1k miles for the year on this run too, so it was kinda a big day!
Also, all this talk of Tailwind finally reminded me to order a sampler pack on Amazon Prime. I'm looking forward to trying it as I like the idea of not having to eat things while I'm running!
I also saw a fairy ring on my long run, about 1.5 miles into it. I took it as a good omen of how my run would go, lol

For Ultra length races (depending on AS distance) I'm planning on carrying either two 17oz or two 21oz bottles with tailwind and having my crew ready with replacements every AS... Longest distance between AS at my fall race is like 5.7 miles. There's one AS with no crew crew access, so I'd plan on bringing Tailwind with me to fill up at that one.... Lots of thinking involved to make this work, but I really like Tailwind so it could.
Oh, just a thought, at my Trail marathon, I made foil packets with tailwind ready to go and used them to refill when I got to the aid stations, so, if you can afford the time to do it, you might be able to do similar without having to carry the full 80-100 ounces.
Tailwind Nutrition Endurance Fuel Berry 50 Serving ( http://amzn.to/2vvjDHc )
A smarter person than I would have bought the sampler pack and tried different flavors, but I had an Amazon Gift Card that needed spending so I got the big bag.
My taste buds are a bit broken though, so do not go by my evaluation of taste. I do not know that "salty" is the right word either, it is almost like it is thicker or heavier.
I brought 20oz of it on that failed 15k that turned into 15 miles. Good thing too, that was ALL I had to drink/eat during it - and I was able to finish strong. I really think there is something to their advertising.
I plan to do more long runs with it (3+ hours) and see, but I am becoming convinced I can get away with drinking (And there by carrying) less water when I use Tailwinds.

@PastorVincent My next purchase is going to be lemon, I tend to prefer tart drinks, and I like the raspberry but want some bite.... might try mixing a "raspberry lemonade" with it.4

Non-running check in:
Scheduling two races in one week was ambitious. Given how beat up I was from marathon training in general, I think it turned out to be overly aggressive. Don't think I want to do that again.
After yesterday's hard race, this morning the secondary aches in my right hamstring and hip abductor had faded into obscurity. Unfortunately, the primary right Achilles niggle was aggravated to the point of, "Don't run on me or I will Make You Hurt." So today is an extra rest day.
I knew I was risking this when I got into my car to drive to the race site yesterday morning, so it's not a total surprise. Now I just have to deal with it. No running, and about a mile walking in one stretch was enough. On the bright side, I was able to do cone touches this morning. They were a lot harder with the right leg planted than they have been, and I had to pay attention to get them done on that side; but I was able to complete 3 sets of 10.
So, what to do now? See how things feel tomorrow, and either run or take a rest day accordingly. All running needs to be easy for a while, until the Achilles improves quite a bit. I'm hopeful that I can keep my appointment with the USATF Masters Mile in Flint a week from Friday. It's too early to guess whether I'll be all better by then or how much running a hard road mile will set me back.
Looking further forward, I'm beginning to think about strategy for Oak Tree and Rochester. If things are still iffy at the start of September, it might be smart to take a DNS at Oak Tree to be healthier for Rochester. But I need to think about that *now* because I might not do the smart thing in real time if I don't think about it in advance.
Upcoming registered races:
August 25, 2017 USATF Masters Mile (Hap Crim Michigan Mile, Flint, MI)
September 3, 2017 Oak Tree Half Marathon (Geneseo, NY)
September 17, 2017 MVP Rochester Marathon (Rochester, NY)
November 23, 2017 Race with Grace 10K (Hilton, NY)6 -
Finished the weekend with a nice 6.3 miles at a consistent pace every mile within 10 seconds of planned pace for me just a perfect day light breeze low 80s blue skies at my favorite park.
I am having a little tightness in one inner thigh muscle but considering the increased distances not surprising. I have run all but one day in August over 5 miles every day and kicked up to 6 per day this weekend
65.8/100 for August challenge thanks to all here for so much motivation
I am hoping this gives me the base that leads to my first half sometime in early 2018 as a 70YO4 -
@kristinegift and @MNLittleFinn - I so agree about the hot and humid weather. I just don't think I ever acclimate. I actually prefer about 30 F for running, but am happy in the 40's- anything above 60F just really drains me. Sorry you both had difficult runs
@juliet3455 - Awesome race and I love the shirt!
@JimCrackinDandy -Great run!
August goals are 90 miles and figuring out what all the info from my new watch means about my training.
Aug 3 - 10 miles
Aug 4 - 6.2 miles
Aug 5- 7.5 miles
Aug 6- too rainy/ wimpy
Aug 7- 7 miles
Aug 10- 7.3 miles
Aug 12 - 12.2 miles
Aug 13 - 4.8 miles
Total 55/100 goal -
Ugh - I just was not feeling the run today. It was hot and I was feeling that 12 mile run from Saturday as well as the weightlifting session on Thursday still. So I quit a little early and thought - I'll go meet up with my husband who is hike/running a giant hill to break in his hiking boots and get another mile of so of hills in and then go back with him. He had just finished the 1100 feet elevation he was planning and was getting in his car to go back. I had run there but after stopping and talking to him - well I just got right in that air-conditioned vehicle with water waiting and rode home with him instead of at least getting the last 1.5-2 miles home.
Yikes - I have 45 miles left and only 6 days left for my normal schedule of running. I may have set my goal a little high. Definitely should not have wimped out due to the rain on Aug 6 - but as many noted - I don't mind running in the rain - but it is hard to start out in a downpour. I should be able to get it all in as long as I don't have anymore excuses.

@wishiwasarunner @skippygirlsmom I am trying to ignore the naysayers and I am going to start taking them after my runs. If I run at lunch I'll take them later in the day. I know they need it.
@_nikkiwolf_ I wish we had a park like that. My son has a dog park near him that he takes his corgi to. His town is very dog friendly.
@cburke8909 You should definitely get a puppy.

Today I finally ran 10K! My previous best was 5.4 miles and I made it for 6.3 miles today. I had to wait out some storms this morning. It was 78°F and 87% humidity when I started out. I thought I had a good window of time, but at somewhere between 3 - 3.5 miles it started raining. There was no lightening so I kept going. It was really nice. When I started out I felt like the run was going to be really hard, but after about 2.5 miles I just really felt into it. I felt like I could run all day. I love it when I feel that way.
I had planned to take the dogs for a short walk after the run but I didn't because it was still raining. But I did get my husband to go out with me later and we walked the dogs for about half an hour. So it has been a great Sunday.
I also got the kr30dc done today. I must say that this week is killing my quads.

@wishiwasarunner weather is the only reason I'm not too worried about my October race based on my current running.... it was 61 when my run started yesterday and rose to the 90s when we were on the rocks, with an average in the 80s..... Average high on race day in October is lower than the lowest temp I ran in yesterday.1

Sure starting out in a total downpour isn't what most of us would do either. Better to wait until the radar shows you're out of the bright red and yellow, I always say3 -
I ran 4.5 miles today. It felt good. Not sure if I'm going to run tomorrow..might do the rower and elyptical...5

Been resting since Saturday. Had an awesome fancy dress party where I lost my voice talking to some incredible scientists doing great work for humanity in biospectrometry to do with malaria, septicemia, global warming, AIDS, to name a few. Blown away.

7 miles this am. I should have skipped the tempo part of the run as I was feeling overworked from an agressive increase in mileage last week but did I? Of course not, I felt fine on the first easy mile, so three miles and 24 minutes of tempo shouldn't hurt. Right? WRONG! The 24 minutes at tempo seemed good until it was time to slow down and bring it home. It was then that my left knee began to protest its abuse. (dummy, you've been told, why don't you listen?) ok I'll just take it easy home. Not as simple as you would think as I am 3.5 miles from home and after the first easy mile I'm in enough pain to actually start walking and its not helping much. I make it home. Knee is ok but not great and I decide that tomorrow is a rest day and maybe Wednesday too. Did I learn my lesson? I hope so.

@orphia you truly are Wonder Woman! Can't wait to hear about your marathon.1

It was not raining yet this morning, and the forecast is still for rain every day for the next week, so I thought I'd get a short run in. At dawn, the path was still so dark and foggy and deserted that instead of going out to the overpass and back, I did a couple of very slow laps to the quarter mile mark and back.3 -

Yesterday it rained in the morning so I went out a little later. Oh my the oppressive humidity. LOL. I was drenched in sweat by the time I made it back home. We had a small birthday celebration at my MIL's and had cake (Nothing Bundt Cake...ummmm) so I am glad that I got a run in. Today is PT with the new doc so I am sure that I will be sore tonight.
Hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great week!!!

Welcome! You've stumbled upon the best thread on MFP, with a ton of super helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive peeps here! There's a ticker you can post (instructions are in the very first post of the thread) or, if you're like me, and was never able to get the ticker working properly, you can choose to post your progress/miles/etc in whatever format pleases you!1 -
So I have a lot, lot, lot of catching up to do from this weekend. I plan on doing that at lunchtime today since I have a pretty busy work day. In the meantime, I just wanted to check in with a quick update of my half marathon this weekend. Even though it was just a small, local race, it was pretty important to me because it was my first distance race since Boston and I really wanted to use it to gauge my fitness level after the last 4 months of low volume training and no speed work, and also to see how my hamstrings would hold up over the distance while pushing the pace.
I am happy to report that it went really well. Obviously not a PR, but I finished in 1:43:26, which was second in my age group (I got a nice coffee mug for that). I was hoping to break 1:45, so that was a success and I am only about 4 minutes off my PR time from last fall, so I think I should be able to get back there with the addition of speed work and a slow increase in my weekly mileage.
The recovery news is a little less promising. The race really did wipe me out, but I guess I can expect that because, except for one tempo run last week and a 5K last month, I have not run any miles at that pace since February. Also, even though it was a pretty cool morning for August, the temps did still climb into the 70s, which is hotter than normal for most of my races. I spent most of yesterday afternoon just lounging around. My legs didn't really feel like doing anything. I felt more like I was recovering from a full marathon than a half. Legs are a bit stiff today, but not as bad as from a full. I will take the day off from running and do some yoga, stretching, etc. and hopefully be back in action tomorrow.10 -
