Unfortunately, so far, I "handle it" by just getting sick every year. My husband made the comment the other day that ever since I started taking classes at the university, I get sick each semester. He put it down to stress, and that might contribute, but I suspect that being crammed into classrooms with 100+ people who have just arrived off flights from all over Asia might have something to do with it. All you need is one who picked something up somewhere ...
The other thing is that quite a number of my coworkers travel for business or personal reasons. I came back from Canada via Sydney in mid July, and I know there have been others who have been over to the mainland through the Melbourne or Sydney airports. Those are busy airports, and again, all there needs to be is one person carrying something ...
BTW - it's 10:20 pm down here on Wednesday night. If all goes well, I'll be going to bed in a couple hours.

Hi all! Just read all your comments and was impressed with all the openness and great sharing. First time on but was glad to see all you 50+. Gave me the courage to put my own two cents in. I'm 62 woman and pre-diabetic. Started at 239lbs and now at 211. Went to a free nutrition class through my husband's dr and that's were I was introduced to My Fitness Pal. I've been overweight since I was about 30 and over the years my weight climbed upward. Binging was my middle name and I was always running those negative tapes in my head which didn't help at all. I believed that "fat" was who I was. The nutrition class got me starting to view food in a different way. In the past, I've only been able to stay on a diet for about 2 weeks, and I would panic when I started to lose which of course sent me back to binging again. So now I'm into my 4th month of using My Fitness Pal and have been doing really well. Down 26lbs since I started in May. The trick for me has been to stop those negative thoughts before they take hold (actually in my head I scream STOP) and think of this obsession with food as an addiction. It's been hard but getting easier. I've finally started to exercise a little but have to say I hate to exercise (and don't really know what I'm doing). I have an on-site gym at work so there is no excuse not to exercise but I have to force myself to do it. Try to go at a time when the gym is mostly empty. The medicine I'm on makes me sweat just walking across the room so when I exercise I really sweat. Ok, so I know I'm using that as an excuse. What is in my mind a lot now and worries me the most is all that hanging fat and loose skin I will have as I lose more weight. It stresses me out and makes me want to eat again. Any thoughts any of you may have on this would be most helpful. Ok, I'm done rambling. Nice to meet you all and look forward to sharing my thoughts/issues and hearing yours! Terry (in Vermont)6

Welcome here!
And regarding this ... when I lost weight, I went through a marshmallow phase where everything was soft and saggy. I hated looking at myself in the mirror. But I was told that if it were going to tighten up, it could take up to 2 years. I had to be patient.
I was also advised to do weight lifting which would fill the skin out in a different way.
Finally, I was advised to start putting money away each month or each week just in case a surgery was needed.
Fortunately, I did tighten up after 2 years ... but it is genetic or luck of the draw and very hard to predict.

Thanks Machka. That is really good to know and helps to ease my stress about it.4

Well, despite this weekend's eclipse closing of the gym, I managed to lose half a pound!

Hi Everyone! I've been doing MFP on and off for a few years. I've been on again since June. I'm 59, way past post menopause, Started at 205 and I'm down to 186. My first question is - how do I "join" this group? Or do I just bookmark and start following? Groups intimidate me but I could use some company and encouragement on my weight loss journey!

Terry in VT, Welcome to a terrific group of supportive, encouraging ladies. I'm now 67 (68 in November). I lost 125# almost four years ago using bariatric surgery as a tool. I know exactly what you're talking about and going through. Yes, I have some baggy skin, but not anywhere near as bad as I was fearing. I have ugly legs and arms and had not worn shorts nor short sleeves in years. So actually my clothes really cover up everything I don't want seen. I too hated exercise, my knees were horrible. Since the weight loss I have had both knees replaced and can truly say I don't mind exercising. I've made it a habit, includied in my daily routine. I'm retired and I realize working a job does tend to present a challenge time wise. It sounds like you have made a life changing decision and moving forward with your plan. This is a healthy lifestyle, not a diet. Hang in there and hooray for you. Come back often and get to know us and us you.

Thanks Janet for the welcoming remarks! I'll keep at the exercise. I agree, you can hide a lot under clothes. Guess I was doing that all along no matter what my size. I'm looking forward to being able to shop for clothes with some style and not just the bagging ones for larger sizes. Terry5

Hello, ladies! I'm a 62 year old woman who's trying desperately to lose weight and control her blood sugar before I get the dreaded pre-diabetes diagnosis. I started on the Metabolism Miracle plan on July 26th but after more research, I switched to a ketogenic diet. My starting weight was 198 and I'm now down to 190.4. My exercise is mostly walking, which I do on my indoor "track" to avoid the heat, but I've just added Piyo. My husband and I recently got standup paddleboards, and my goal with the Piyo is to be able to get onto the board from water that's over my head.7

Hi Paula, sounds like you are off to a great start. Great ways to exercise! Terry1

Oh goodness, I was talking to the boy just yesterday about needing flu shots. Sorry to hear you are under that flu.
In Oklahoma traveling? Eat salsa at Mexico Joe's if you go to Stillwater.
Paula-diabetes is nasty. Do what you must to beat it.
Howdy all. Off to mow-what else do I ever seem to do. No clouds here but forecast said THUNDERSTORM. Ha, we will see.3 -
