8/1 - 3 mile run
8/2 - Rest Day
8/3 - Thunderstorms this morning, no running this morning. Thunderstorms are suppose to clear out this afternoon and if the roads are dry enough I will run this evening. If not, dreadmill at the gym. Life happened - work an hour over at job, then when I arrived home my son needed stuff for his football retreat this weekend, so off to the store we went.
8/4 - 4 mile run
8/21 -3 mile run
8/22 - 4 mile run
8/23 - Scheduled rest day
Hurricane Harvey is in the Gulf and maybe a rain maker for us - so hoping I can run outside the rest of the week and this weekend.

I have to say, 80F feels like 84F is a lot cooler than 92F feels like 96F. Plus total cloud cover and no noon day sun shining on me made this run a lot more pleasant than yesterday. I should have run my intervals today. I think I will run tomorrow after work (depending on the weather). I like running at lunch, but I really only have about 30 minutes to run so my runs are always shorter. I am on track to hit my goal this month though, so I guess it is ok to have a couple of shorter runs.

Non-running update: It's going to be a while. Saw the podiatrist today. Went over the history of how it happened. Diagnosis is Posterior Tibial Tendinitis, possible tear in the PTT, probably arising from putting more stress on the PTT from running with a weak Achilles tendon.
There are multiple paths to treatment. The goal is to calm the tendon down and get to no pain as soon as possible; one of the tactics is to immobilize the ankle:
There's also a prescription NSAID with a long scary list of side effects, but not to worry. I was on the same thing with the Achilles tendinitis, and didn't have any of the awful side effects. But I can't take the first one till my current naproxen wears off; part of the sound track is you DO NOT take this stuff and OTC anti-inflammatories at the same time.
On the bright side, if I'm going to sit around being not very mobile much of the time, it's nice to have a lapful of purr:
So that pretty much closes out August running for me. 84.31 miles out of the nominal target of 260. Achieved my goals for Pound the Ground 10K and Bergen 5K, at great cost. In 20-20 hindsight, it would have been better to sit out Bergen. There will be a DNS for the USATF Masters Mile, missing that goal. Training for the Rochester Marathon has been canceled, missing that goal. And the most important goal, staying healthy, gets an F. August has not been a good month for me.
Told Coach yesterday I wasn't going to Flint. It's pretty clear from today that I won't be running Oak Tree Half or Rochester Marathon, either. Beyond that, I could be getting back into being able to run a little. Maybe I can have a race in October, maybe not.
I may read this thread and sometimes comment; or it may get to be more than I can stand to read about how other people are running and doing well in races and achieving new PRs for distance and race results. I'll see how I feel as time passes.7 -
Ugh! @mobycarp I'm so sorry to read this post. I just don't know what else to say, I just hate this for you.0

Not sure if I'll get to 50k but have a route mapped out to try at the weekend 6.43 km (4 miles). I've been doing some street running as I'm getting bored with just running around the park (it's small). Also it's become a bit of a comfort zone and with the nights getting darker running in the park is going to be a no go. I may have to go to a gym with a running track but want to avoid it as long as possible. I've found that I actually like running outside.3 -
Man, so sorry to hear that @MobyCarp Focus on recovery and try not to rush back to soon.0

@MobyCarp I clicked like on your post, but only because your cat is so cute. The diagnosis from your doctor is defenitely nothing to like - I'm really sorry you won't be able to run!! I hope the pain dies down quickly, so that you can get rid of the fancy new boot you are wearing.

Not sure what temperatures to put in my running log for tonights run - it was 30°C when I started, but cooled down to 24°C by the time I finished nearly three hours later (86F to 75F). For now I put the 30°C, since my route today was up and down a mountain, the first 11.x km where all uphill, and the heat during that part of the run really sucked!
Still, in the end my time for the climb segment was almost as good as my PR, 1:35:33 instead of 1:34:22. It probably would have been only ~30s, but when I was nearly at the top I got a call on my on-call phone from work and walked during the conversation. It actually turned out to be one of those things where I had to get back to work. Something like that happens maybe 2-3 times per year, so did it really have to be tonight in the middle of my long run? Usually I would have added a little hill as a bonus at the end of the long descent before going back to the car. I skipped that in favour of stumbling in to work sweaty and exhausted and spending 15min to fix the problem, before I could go home to shower, food and stretches.
And now it's nearly midnight and I still have 1300kcal left, which is a weird side-effect of moving my long run to a workday. If I go for a long run in the morning on a weekend, I usually have almost the entire day left to eat all kinds of stuff5 -
@MobyCarp that sucks. Really sucks
@PastorVincent - can I swap with your son? Not the meeting grandpa bit, that would be weird, but the track stuff. Please?????2 -
@MobyCarp That totally sucks! I hope that it can heal "fast" for you. Hoping you can still come hang out. You're a HUGE help to us newbie runners.1

Some more barefoot intervals this morning. Thought I'd ache more because I was back strength training yesterday, but then again it was only yesterday.,..tomorrow will be worse
Bumped into an elderly gentleman I say hi to on my runs. He usually does about 11 miles of walking BEFORE 9AM but I'd not seen him for a while. Apparently he had a stroke, and is now restricted in how far he can go, but still seems to be out for a couple of hours or so. Just goes to show walking or being healthy and active makes you heal quicker.
I cut my run short so I could walk and chat with him a while, because some things are just more important than getting the run done.10 -

@MNLittleFinn - After you complete your first marathon, you're no longer allowed to call yourself a newbie runner. Newbie marathon runner, maybe; newbie runner, no.5 -
@MobyCarp Sorry to hear your update; hope the meds do their thing and you heal up sooner rather than later.
Today's run was brought to you by the letters R, A, I and N, and was chock-a-block full of awesomeness and kittens. And I think there's even more kittens in the forecast. Fantabulous!

@MobyCarp sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you have a speedy pleasant recovery. Happy to report my knee and thigh feel good after a morning stationary bike ride. 50 minutes and about 16 miles. I will try the elliptical tomorrow. Feeling confident about my 7 mile run for Saturday.
@skippygirlsmom keep us up to date on you and skip, I have a feeling I'm getting a glimpse of my future.1 -
@MobyCarp - really sorry to hear about your injury. That doesn't seem fair (which of course matters not at all) when you are so careful to try to stay healthy. The good news is this is something that will go away and you will be back out there running - and will have much cooler weather to help out by then. I know that for someone like you, for whom running is such a passion, this will be hard. But you will hopefully come back stronger than ever.

bloody hell @MobyCarp I'm really sorry about your injury. I hope you do pop in from time to time to let us know how you're progressing (and to post pictures of your adorable kitty), but I totally understand if you decide to steer clear for a while.0
