Which plan are you following?
This is the plan that I'm following. As I said, I'm in week 7 now.

According to the plan, I'm supposed to find a 10K race to run in 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town. No racing for me. So I'll already have to alter the plan some. Just not sure how to do it, yet.0 -

As I said, I'm on week 7. The plan has me running a 10K race in week 9, but we've got a prior commitment. No race that day for me. Might do the 6.2 miles, anyway.

5 miles today, tried out my new hydration vest - Nathan Intensity Race vest in very berry! It felt pretty good, but I definitely noticed the extra weight running especially after 3 miles. I suppose I'll get used to the extra weight? I'm not sure if I should use it for my 13 miles this weekend or if I should keep "practicing" with it before trying it on a long run.2 -
WandaVaughn wrote: »My plan changed my midweek run to five miles as of today. Did it! And tomorrow is 3 miles. I will hit my goal, following my plan! Hurray!
September will have a dilemma. I started earlier than 12 weeks to get ready for the HM on 11/4. I'm in week 7 now. Should I repeat week 11 over and over again when I get there until I need the scale back week at the end of October? Should I repeat the easier weeks now? The highest mileage is 12 miles on the plan. Geez, I'm not even going to do a full 13 miles before HM day? I'm starting to hyperventilate here!
First. Stop. Drop. and BREATH!
Okay, now as others have said, if you can run 12 in training you can run more than 13 in a race. In fact, I would bet you could run 15 in a race. Heck, 20 miles is all I ran before my first marathon. I forget what the percent is but there is some rule of thumb that you only need run like 70% of your race distance in training.
That aside, if you have 4 extra weeks, my suggestion would be to look at the last five weeks. Push the last week off so that it is the week of the race (as it is intended to be), and repeat the 4 that are left of that 5 in order. So... week 8,9,10,11,8,9,10,11,12. With out knowing your plan, I think that might work okay. As @_nikkiwolf_ said there are patterns the plans follow so you do not want to just repeat one week over and over.
That is my best guess based on knowing nothing at all about anything at all so take it as it is worth.

Do any of you stretch before you run? I have not since leaving gym class. Does not seem to help/hinder me best I can tell.
The rule of thumb is dynamic stretching before exercise and static stretching afterwards.
Do YOU do that? Does it seem to help you at all?
I do not do the full body dynamic stretch thingy that the guy in the video showed. I provided the videos as an explanation, and in case anyone did want to do that if they were interested. I'm all about sharing as much information to everyone and then let everyone decide for themselves what will work best for them.
Me? I just go out and run. lol
We have a professional running group in town that is sponsored by Fleet Feet. In other words, you pay people to go run with them because they are supposed to know what they are doing. Most of the people that participate are true beginners. Which is fine. They are doing it. And these groups are designed to motivate and educate the true beginner.
Sometimes I just so happen to run in places where they meet and run. I on occasion watch them start with their dynamic stretching routine. arm circles, trunk rolls, leg kicks, and so on and so on. I haven't done any of that since I was in high school. lol
If I am not feeling it right away, I just start slower than normal. Like this morning. It was a recovery day. Monday was go run up Madkin 2x. Yesterday was a decent 9 miler that was just a little slower than say goal marathon pace. So obviously I woke up this morning feeling it. So I just started in a very slow jog, probably 14 min/mile pace till I felt like everything started to loosen up which was about maybe a 1/4 mile in. Then I slowly picked up pace, but nothing crazy this morning. Yesterday's run was average 8:25 pace. Today it was a 10:41 pace. So that is my way of doing dynamic stretching. Just go run, but much slower.4 -

Another beautiful 4:30am run. I'm going to have to enjoy these while I can because 55 degree mornings will soon turn to 35 degree mornings, then 15 degree mornings. With today's run I'm well within striking distance of 145 miles for the month. I haven't had a chance to reflect on what next month will look like but I think the goal will be to get to 45, maybe even 50 miles a week by months end. I'd really like to have 4-5 weeks of 50-55 miles a week in October before starting on my training cycle. HR on today's run was just teetering on that z2/z3 line which is what I consider the sweet spot. Average HR was 143, with the mile 1 at 140 and 145 for the last .8. I just need to get my easy pace down from 10:45 back to 9:30/9:45. Losing the last of my running vacation weight should provide that increase in speed over the next 8 -10 weeks.
edit* Sorry about some of the data stuff I put in these. These are copy/pasted from my running journal4 -

@WandaVaughn You may find interest in one of my blog posts. It would apply as much to a Half Marathon plan as it would to a Full Marathon plan.

THat is a good plan, I know many people who have gone from very little base to finish HM with that plan.
Just run 10k that week, and do not worry if it is a race or not. You will be fine.1 -

So my goal on August 1st was 28 miles and I hit 30.35 this morning. @5512bf I am with you on the cooler mornings. It was 68 this morning with a slight breeze and I could tell that I will love running in the fall. HR was much better, was able to maintain pace better and I could have gone further if I didn't have to get home and get the boys ready for school. Sept will be fun as I have my first race at the end of Sept. I will finish up C25K and then start on a 10k program. My sister is flying in from CO to run the race with me! I am so excited as I haven't seen here in 2.5 years.7

All of the recommendations have much merit, but some of what you have to do is decide what works for your fitness and psyche. I would agree with making sure you get in your taper. And though I completely agree that you do not need to have run the entire distance before your first race (and I don't think I would go more than 24 miles before a marathon), I really prefer to know, without a doubt, that I have the endurance to run the entire race. I would change something up so that you have one run - maybe 2 weeks before your race - that you run 13-13.5 miles. That way you are only relying on the taper and excitement of race day to increase your pace - not also pull you through miles you have not done before. But that may just be what works better for me and my personality.
Of course none of it works for me right now since I am very literally back to being Wishiwasarunner.
@katharmonic and @Orphia - thanks so much for your well wishes.

I was going to do an easy run this morning since I've got plans tomorrow night (a local theater does summer reboot nights and this week's movie is Fargo so I'm bailing on my group run to go watch it), however when my alarm went off at 6 am I was NOT in the mood. So I went back to bed and now that I'm home from work, I don't want to run either since I have a 5:30 am tempo tomorrow. So I'm thinking I'll definitely have time to double up tomorrow with my morning tempo run and an evening run after work, THEN the movie at 7:30
If I don't get the extra 4.5-5 miles in, I won't hit my goal for the month... just be tantalizingly close. So I'll get it done. But that 250 is going to be down to the wire!!
Upcoming Races:
Oct 8: Steamtown Marathon
Oct 22: Perfect 10 (10 Miler)
Nov 5: Princeton Half Marathon (pacer)

Non-running check in and selected comments:
@PastorVincent - I do static stretches after I run, much of the time. Sometimes I forget after a social run when I'm chatting. Sometimes I bag it after a long run because there's no good place to stretch in the rain. Sometimes I wait till I get home, when weather is adverse for hanging around to stretch. Sometimes I bag it because a lousy 4 mile run hardly seems worth the stretch. But mostly, when it's not horribly inconvenient, I stretch after running. Can't tell the difference the day of the run, but if I really need to stretch and don't do it my body will tell me about it the next day.
I've done some dynamic stretching and/or drills before races, particularly short races like 5K or 10K. I don't know how much difference that makes, given that I typically have a warmup run of at least 2 miles anyway.
@Stoshew71 - Your bad month was more running miles than my bad month, nya nya. Not the contest I really wanted to win.
Had my first PT visit scheduled for Monday; it got canceled due to the PT having an emergency, and I went today. It's more satisfying to have ultrasound and electro-stimulation and a couple of baby exercises to gently work the ankle than it is to immobilize the ankle in a boot; but I can tell that it doesn't hurt as much after a week of immobilization. I've mowed the lawn twice, and I typically don't wear the boot to go grocery shopping; but it's doing its job of keeping me from irritating the PTT. Too bad it's such a PIA about it. Too bad I can't ride a bike while wearing the boot. The podiatrist said to wear the boot 23 hours a day; I'm probably actually wearing it about 20. That will have to be good enough.
Here it is next to last day of August, and I already know my September goal: Run one mile. I might or might not get there in September; if I do, that would indicate that things are going well.

August Goal: Not die while ramping up running mileage and technicality during 100K training
Nominal mileage goal: 250 miles HAHAHAHA not gonna happen
Today's notes: Just an easy 5 today. Not going to make my goal for the month, but I was expecting that when I cut a running day out each week. Not feeling too bad about it though. I KNOW a guy who's running a 100 mile in a couple weeks who trains on like 35mpw average and has finished that distance multiple times.... My mileage is pretty high by comparison and I'm running/hiking like 40 miles less than that at my October race.
The lower mileage has really been helping me feel fresher and more productive on my runs. Starting to think about adding Friday back into my rotation, or just up the mileage of my runs.... Probably will just up my mileage, and maybe add back a 2-a-day day each week.
Hope everyone had a Runderful day!

As promised I took a rest day today. What an amazing day with Skip. I thought the ceremony would be a quick no big deal, but it wasn't. The Judge talked how the Citizenship Ceremony is without a doubt the greatest pleasure he has in a court room. He gave what I would call the best speech I have EVER heard on why it's an honor and privilege to be a citizen. I looked over at Skip and tears were streaming down her face. I'm so glad she decided to take this step though technically she didn't have to, she was so proud. I had to share. She asked the Judge if she could sit in his chair, the court clerk said it was the first time anyone had ever asked that. Shocking!

Goal = 120 miles
Another nice evening so I took Stella, the terrier of mystery, out with me and we slogged through 3 miles. It wasn't pretty or remotely fast but we got it done. And surpassed the goal for August, becoming my highest mileage month ever, and the highest number of steps per month ever. No wonder I'm tired
I will probably run tomorrow yet to finish up the month, and I need to plug some numbers into the old computator to figure out a goal for September. Because of some travel and tapering, September will definitely be lower miles.
Upcoming races:
10/1 Wineglass Half Marathon, Corning NY

Ooh, I have one of the forbidden numbers in my posts - the last two have required approval. Is it one hundred nineteen point five?0
-
@kathormonic - The nuisance number is ll9, with "1" instead of "l". The most dumb-*kitten* spam filter I've ever seen.
@skippygirlsmom - Sometimes I think those of us who have to trace ancestry back many generations to find an immigrant under-appreciate what citizenship means in this country. Thanks for the reminder.6 -
@skippygirlsmom so happy for you and Skip.
@katharmonic not sure what a forbidden number is?
@MobyCarp hang in there. My dad has a favorite phrase "they said cheer up. Life could be worse. They were right. I cheered up and life got worse"
@PastorVincent thanks for the advice. I am resigned to not worry about my heart rate readings. I get a kick out of having a suffer score above 200 but I understand there is no reality in that score.2 -
@skippygirlsmom Simply fantastic!
Today's run was nice and easy, and the cooler temps are really starting to show, translating things to a slightly faster pace yet with a lower heart rate. Bring on the fall weather!

Thank you everyone. It really was a special day. @mobycarp I think you hit the nail right on the head. Driving home I said to her, that was really nice. She looked at me and said "I know if I was still in Russia I would probably be dead by now". She understands through no fault of Russia as a country that it's a very rough life for orphans who leave the orphanage and then have live in the real world. She said I truly appreciate everything living in the United States has given me and what you have given me.
The words the Judge spoke about citizenship truly moved me to tears. I told him afterwards that his words should be playing on a loop on the nightly news.
She also had a cool thing happen, an acquaintance of hers who graduated last year was there. Turns out she was also adopted from Russia so that was special for them and a man who we see at lots of races was there, I can't for the life me of me recall his name, but he recognized her. Thanks again.7
