6 km Struggle which leaves me 18km short of my Monthly Goal.

It was a planned 15km Judah Hill Climb. Didn't happen. Managed to get to 3.9 km before my legs started to scream in exhaustion "I quit" :( , so I turned and started back. At 6 km I was just done. So I called it a day. Tomorrow needs to be a rest day as I am definitely wiped out from yesterdays X-Country Bush Trails/Hill Climb.

See everyone in September. Some fool has 3 events in September - just like last year.
2 of them are 10 km X-Country runs and the 3rd is a obstacle course run over our local ski hill.

Sorry for the absence. Many things conspired to take me away from here and from running, unfortunately. Work, kids, car trouble. Even sailing has taken a hit. We were only on the boat once in August.

And, saddest of all, my mother-in-law past away in early August after being in hospice since April, and after 30+ years of MS. What a cruel, sick disease that is. I'm now considering a solo charity running event in her honor next year, near the anniversary of her death, to benefit the National MS Society. I think the running part is feasible, but I'm not much of a salesman and getting enough contributions to make it worth my while might be an issue. She was 77 when she died and as luck would have it, I found a route from our house to the in-laws house that is within a few 10ths of a mile of 77 miles. My goal would be to run that 77 miles in 24 hours to surprise my father-in-law with a check for him to give to the MS Society. That's the thought anyway. I still need to think this through. I'm excited about the prospect of the run, but not about the fundraising. I've got time to decide though. I wouldn't have to announce anything until May or early June of next year.

So my goal this month was 100 miles, and I actually had hoped for 120 or more, but will settle for 66. My 3-month summer total, June/July/August is just 162 miles. Dec through April I averaged 173 per month! I feel like such a slug!!

When I do get out, I try to make them count. Last Saturday I had a wonderful 11 mile run in Wisconsin on the Ice Age Trail. I didn't start until nearly 7pm so half my run was in the dark. Combine that with a steady rain that fell most of the run...awesome!!!! I avoided any headlamp until the last mile or so. I felt like a savage running through the jungle!

75 pages of posts this month!! Damn! I doubt I'll be able to keep up, but I'll try.

@7lenny7 My sincere condolences for your loss. What a beautiful gesture that would be. Any amount raised would help MS - it would certainly help more than nothing at all.

I haven't had much time to read or check in but I know lots of running has been going on. I will get caught up at least reading this weekend, if not responding...
@7lenny7 - I did see your post about your mother-in-law and you are right it is an horrible disease. What a wonderful tribute you are creating with your run and I think you probably know that we will all be here to support you in whatever you decide to do!

I ran to HIIT runs for my last 2 of the month. One on the treadmill at the hotel gym in Dallas that was quite a challenge just trying to get the speeds to change. What was awesome though was I actually ran several intervals at an 8:30 pace. I honestly didn't know I could run that fast and I certainly couldn't maintain it for long but it was exciting while it lasted. My second run was this morning in the heat. Not my smartest run (I did leave Hobbes the Vizsla at home though). It was 80F when I headed out and over 90 when I got home. I was stopped by my elite running friend who was driving by and wanted to know what in the world I was doing and did I know how hot it was  After talking a few minutes he told me I was proof that running may cause brain damage :confounded: I did get my run in and done as well as strength training tonight. All in all a good day from a workout perspective.. work however still sucked.

Hobbes has an agility trial this weekend and it is going to be really hot. I am hoping to get some runs in before we head off.

sorry to hear about your Mother-in-law, it's a terrible disease. My sister was diagnosed in her early 30's and struggles with the symptoms, which are many and varied. It doesn't help that she was crushed by a tree a year or so ago......

so thankyou for stepping up to the plate to raise money. Keep us posted.

@7lenny7 , I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother-in-law. My heart goes out to you and your family. I think your idea is great and that you would find a lot of willing contributors without too much trouble. It doesn't have to be a staggering amount to make a difference.

@girlinahat - gorgeous pics! Where is that?

@katharmonic - it's the Dorset coast. around the Isle of Purbeck where Purbeck stone is quarried from. There were lots of fossils to be found (I found an ammonite without even trying!!).

@7lenny7 So sorry for your loss. I think your run sounds like a wonderful idea. Be sure and let us know about the fundraising. You could always add a virtual run or something like that.

@7lenny7 Sorry for your loss too. I love the idea of a run in honor of your MIL.

Maybe catch a local race director for direction. Be nice if you can turn the 77 miles into a relay for those that might want to participate but lack the endurance.

    Best of luck.

@7lenny7 - I'm sorry for your loss. My ex-wife had MS. It does awful things to a person, though it had nothing to do with what sank our marriage. She ended up passing at the young age of 63.

On a charity race, I kind of like the way the Medved 5K to Cure ALS is organized. They try to get runners to raise funds, and anyone who raises $250 or more can have a message printed on the back of the race shirt. (Obviously, there is a deadline well in advance of race day.) I got a memorial to two friends who died of ALS put on the shirt this year, and all the shirt messages were read aloud at the start line. That was kind of nice. You might want to consider a similar model for a race to support MS research.

Good news: Completed my last "long run" for my 10k training and registered for the race. Was supposed to run 5.5 miles but was closer to 5.15 miles because of...

Bad news: My Samsung Gear Fit 2 *kitten* the bed somewhere between 2.7 miles and 4 miles, so I had to improvise the last mile amd a hakf and guess in the distance. I feel confident with the mental part, so I will do my two shorter runs this week and definitely can run the full race mext Saturday.

Annoying news: Samsung customer service is a real *kitten* show, but thankfully will be visiting my daughter in NYC where there is actually a Samsung store. The device is still under warranty, but the company is notoriously bad about honoring it.

I feel a little lost without my watch. It has been a constant companion since I got it in October and it has been there through thick and thin (literally).

Any good app suggestions with audio prompts at certain mileage intervals? Is Map My Run good for that? I will miss looking down to check my progress...feeling a little panicked to have a change so close to race day.

RunKeeper is what I use. I have it prompt me every minute, my wife has it prompt her every 1/4 mile. It is by far the most flexible in that respect of any app I have tested.

@7lenny7 My condolences for your loss. Your charity run sounds like a wonderful idea to honor her memory and help others!

@girlinahat Great vacation photos! Sounds like you had some lovely adventures.

I finished the month with 144.3 km. It should have been more, had I followed my training plan. But I missed a long run due to being ill with a stupid cold (at least I'm mostly over it now...).
So it's a good thing I let the Fibonacci discussion at the beginning of the month tempt me to make my goal 144km instead of the 150km I had originally planned
