    I can't believe it. August 1 and I am 7 pages behind.

My goal for this month is 60 and I am going to get it this time.

August 29....I slept 3.5 hours after working all night, saw my doctor afterward, and then hunkered to run the last 6 miles that I needed to complete my goal. I forgot to charge my mp3 player. So I was listening to birds chirping, bees buzzing and the random conversations of people walking their dogs. I have been inspired by the people in Houston who are fighting for their lives and by people working hard to save as many people as they can. I can surely run a measly 6 miles without music. The weather was pretty awesome here, around 82 degrees, slightly humid. It had rained in the morning (nothing like Houston), and it was a little humid. I also was wearing my work shoes, with "happy feet" orthotics. I actually just ran a little slower than I did on Sunday, and was in the zone most of the run.

I decided to run the half at the end of September and maybe a 5K in November. I have never run a shorter race...it will be my first 5K.

    Upcoming races:
    9/30/2017 Indianapolis Women's Half Marathon
    5/5/2018 Indianapolis Mini-marathon.

    August 1....6 miles.
    August 2....8 miles.
    August 4...4 miles.
    August 14...6 miles
    August 15...5 miles
    August 21....6 miles
    August 22....8 miles
    August 23...5 miles
    total....60 miles
    goal--60 miles

@Orphia Super congratulations on completing and demolishing your first marathon! Wow! And loved the clips during your run. Your finish was inspiring...it looked as if you could run another 26.2 miles!

@skippygirlsmom Congrats to Skip for obtaining citizenship. That's so cool! I know that she will be an inspiration to those of us who take ours for granted.

@RespectTheKitty I am going to really miss you...love reading your posts, which are so honest and candid. Hurry back soon.

Regarding stretching before or after a run. I usually walk a little before starting my run, and the first 1/4 mile of my run is just aimed at getting to a goal heart rate. After the run, I walk another 1/2 mile and intermittently do jumping jacks (30 at a time), high knees and butt-kick hops....to keep my heart rate in the zone. The jumping jacks seem to help my hips and legs from retaining a lot of soreness, and I don't need a lot of time for recovery.

Congratulations to all who have completed their goals. Good luck and speedy recovery to those who are sidelined with injury.

After that, I went out for a short run. Just 5 miles, but for some reason, it was really hard. My HR stayed mostly in Z4 even though my pace did not seem to be fast enough to warrant that reading. I was struggling so Z4 was probably correct, but I refused to give up my pace, especially since I was already running (groan) late. Maybe the cold is sapping more of me than I think it is. No matter, tomorrow I will be down the second part of the two part strength plan and try to get another 5 or 6 miles in.

Are you running an increased temperature with your cold? If so your resting heart rate will be increased and thus any increases will take you to a higher zone than normal.

Last run of the month was this morning. Chilly but comfortable - I could see my breath! And I discovered that the paved running path continues on beyond the next intersection. One day I will get there...

Hope everyone had a great August - see you in September!

August total to date – 84.31

    Nominal challenge goal: 260 miles

Real goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward the Rochester Marathon. Win my age group at Pound the Ground 10K on August 9. [Done, 41:26 4th overall] Run a respectable sub-20 5K at Bergen on August 12. [Done, 19:47] Run the USATF Masters Mile (road) in under 6 minutes on August 25. [took a DNS, injury]

Today's notes – Last post of August, just for form's sake. No new news. Missed the mileage goal, hit the race goals before injury, missed the post-injury race goals (obviously), and missed the important goal of staying healthy, sigh. Don't expect to race in September, will be lucky to be running again by the end of September.

Yesterday in physical therapy, the PT had me work my ankle on the wobble board, and had me do some leg presses. I had good control on the wobble board, but could feel the PTT getting fatigued. The leg presses were trivially easy and didn't bother the PTT at all. With that experience under my belt, this morning I did squats, kettlebell swings, and kettlebell snatches. I could feel the PTT, but it wasn't as severe a sensation as the wobble board. So I tentatively think I'm OK with normal quantities of those exercises. Didn't attempt Turkish get-ups; there's no way the right ankle will tolerate being the back leg of the lunge up and down when I'm holding 30 pounds over my head in my left hand.

Time to set some more modest goals in the September thread.

No idea. Have not taken my temperature. That would be like adulting properly or something so straight out. :)

Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
    Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28

Next Races (more as I find them):

10/14/2017 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km

05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.

Cold is still doing its thing. You know what they say, take 14 days to beat a cold with out medication, or 2 weeks with it - so probably just have to ignore it for a while.

Pretty much repeat of yesterday, but this time I was not running late (groan) so slowed down my pace by about 20-30 seconds and stayed in Z2 for most of it.

Think the cold is peaking. Or rather I hope it is.

Logged "25 mins of strength training" in RunKeeper and it claims 166 calories. I think it's way off its rocker. No way that little bit of lifting tiny weights = 1-2 miles running. I think I will call it 0 and leave it at that.

    Goal = 120 miles

One last run to complete August 2017. I needed a little motivation to get out there so I joined up with the Thursday night run group. I just ran a base run while they did their ladder workout but it was nice to have others around to keep me going (and a coach with a timer to make sure I did it).

I'm going to start September with a rest day, so I will work on what my goal should be and meet you all over in the September thread. Great running this month, everyone. I saw a lot of great total miles, some terrific races, and personal goals met. Hope those who are injured and recovering will be back to it soon.
