Enjoy the shirt and medal. Commemorate the occasion in honor of Steve. I think wearing that shirt will be like hugging @HonuNui. It'll be special to me.
Glad I could inspire you Pat Lenny.
I just looked over the event website a bit closer and read that Steve designed that medal. Yeah, I want it now. Definitely.
I have a trail half marathon the morning of Oct 14th. My first thought was to say that the first 5K of that race would be in honor of Steve, but no...I'll run a separate 5K for him. If I did my time math correctly, 7:30 AM Hilo time is 11:30 AM central time, so that's when I plan on running it.

@Dcorrick are you evacuating? We're securing the yard and house today and tomorrow and deciding on Friday or Saturday if we're going to bug out.
We're in Port St. Lucie; about 45 mins north of West Palm. No, we're not evacuating, and yes, I know all the reasons to. I have parents in assisted living nearby, and we're in a pretty good location. We got direct hits (3 weeks apart) from Frances and Jeanne, and we think we're better off staying put. Also, I am pushing her path eastward thru sheer force of will.2 -
If you're a night runner in the northern part of the northern hemisphere, keep an eye to the sky. Great chance of seeing Aurora Borealis tonight, Thursday, and Friday nights
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g3-watch-6-and-7-september-2017-due-cme-arrival
and for Thursday & Friday nights there this:
SIGNIFICANT northern lights activity now possible Thursday and Friday night.
An X9 flare produced a CME this morning that hurled plasma towards the earth. This CME will travel quickly, as the two CME's on Monday have cleared the way for this CME.
Early unofficial data reads of this CME indicate that the shock could arrive by Thursday morning with the main plasma cloud arriving on Thursday evening.
If this CME connects well, we could see G4 (Kp 8) conditions from this impact in combinations will the other two CME's.
This has the potential to be an event that people will talk about for years. The aurora was seen as far south as Texas when similar conditions presented themselves in June of 2015 and October 2003. If you are north of Texas - yes, you have a shot at seeing the aurora in the next few days!
More good stuff

Thanks for asking. No worries, just major league DOMS from Monday's speed work. Our group leader, who is awesome, really pushed the pace and distance.

September goal: 65 miles
9/3: 7.1 miles
9/4: 3.1 miles
9/5: 3.2 miles (intervals)
9/6: 2.7 miles
16.1/65 miles
It was so pretty today that I ran at lunch instead of after work. I felt like I could run forever. It was a really awesome run. I am so looking forward to the cooler temperatures, I don't want really cold temps, but 60's and 70's are nice. It was about 79 at lunch and I decided that it would be much nicer than the 85 it should be this afternoon. I really just couldn't wait until after work to run. I did have to cut about .5 mile off the route, but it was still good. I'm planning to take the dogs out for a walk later today just so I can enjoy the weather a little more.
Speaking of weather, stay safe @BettyM1017 , @dcorrick and @ddmom0811. We'll be praying for all in Florida.

@7lenny7 I got my shoes at Academy Sports. Not sure of their return policy and the shoes have about 31 running miles on them now. I definitely need thicker socks. Not sure about wool, either! And seeing the Northern Lights with my own eyeballs is on my bucket list!
@skippygirlsmom Speed demon? Haaaa! (but thanks for the confidence booster)1 -
Just jumping it say thanks to you all....I am honored and humbled and overwhelmed with your support. Remember, the offer is still open to any who want to be here in person for the Aim at Melanoma run/walk to camp out on my 2acre lawn (with ocean view.....), and barbeque/party to follow after the run!
Also, my prayers and hugs to all impacted by Harvey and looming Irma...3 -

Just been watching footage of the Everest Marathon. Needless to say, the Nepalese pretty much have it in the bag with their genetically adapted lungs.
I don't think anyone could really argue with me if I said it looks like the most stunning trail run in the world.1 -
Just let me know so I can order portapotties!
Here is a race-bib for any who feel so motivated: http://the-hroost.com/public/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/runbib.jpg2 -

The Florida situation certainly makes my weather complaints look trivial. All I have to worry about is a bit of rain keeping me off the bike yesterday and not having a dry summer so I still need to mow the lawn every 4 or 5 days. I hope everyone in Florida comes through this in good shape, with only manageable disruption to life routines.
Today I wanted to get out on the bike, and saw that I needed to mow the lawn. It wasn't raining, so that's what I did; but I let myself out of the boot to mow. Had a mechanical issue to address part way through, that in hind sight provided recovery for the PTT between the first part of mowing and the second. Ended up not putting the boot back on after my shower, though I did wear it for a couple hours this morning. Still sleeping in the boot.
So I'm not healthy yet, but I'm to the point where I can see it coming. Got to thinking that maybe I ought to look up when Boston registration is, or maybe I just don't care that much . . . and an email from BAA landed in my inbox this afternoon. Follow the links, run the calculator, and get no surprises:Gender: M
Valid Qualifying Time*: 3:49:42
*Performance must be recorded on a certified marathon course on or after September 17, 2016.
(All times submitted will be verified.)Age on Race Day (April 16, 2018): 62
You have bettered the qualifying standard for your age and gender by 05:18. You may submit your qualifying and registration information on:
Friday, September 15, 2017, beginning at 10:00 a.m. ET and continuing through 10:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 16.
So, 9 days to decide whether I'm confident that I'll be healthy enough to run a marathon next April. I'll have to think about that. If I miss this one, I suppose I could always run a different spring marathon on shorter notice. Like Buffalo, or Pittsburgh, or Flying Pig. Which would give me a few more months to decide whether I'm still a marathon runner.
Have to think about that.5 -
1 Sept 2.85km run 3.50k walk
2 Sept NONE
3 Sept 5k
4 Sept no run but 3.50k walk
5 Sept PT session and 3.50k walk
6 Sept 3.5k walk Cumulative total =22.35k
I was going to go run on the treadmill but I ended up making cupcakes for a charity bake for work on Friday - my house smells of chocolate orange very yummy.

September Running
09/01: Off, rest day
09/02: 4.02 mile easy run + 30 min biking
09/03: 20.05 mile long run
09/04: 60 min biking + strength training
09/05: 5.04 mile easy run + 15 min elliptical
09/06: 8.03 miles- 7 mile progression, 1 mile cool down
Total: 37.14 miles
Notes:
So I just had one of my top 5 best ever runs! It was a 7 mile progression, where each mile was ~15 seconds faster than the previous one, and then one mile to cool down. The mile splits were 8:57, 8:41, 8:25, 8:09, 7:54, 7:40, 7:12, 8:44 Have to say, I had no idea I had this run in me or that it would feel so easy! According to my garmin, I got new mile (7:12) and 5K (23:38) PRs. Of course, I reset all the records on my watch when I came back from my stress fracture, so these aren't all time PRs. Given how great I felt though, I feel pretty confident that I could nab an all-time mile or 5K PR in a race! Still riding the high off this run, I'm gonna go look at upcoming 5Ks now I think....
Upcoming Races:
- Chicago Marathon, 10/08/17
- Space Coast Half Marathon, 11/26/17
- Excalibur 10 Miler, 03/18/1811 -

Soooo, I didn't run over the weekend like I had planned to...some serious procrastination on my part for sure. But I did get to enjoy the long weekend. This also means I haven't been reading this thread for a few days, and now I'm like ten thousand posts behind, give or take.
The temps this morning were a lot cooler, down 11 degrees from yesterday, so today's run felt really good.
01 - 22.04
05 - 12.10
06 - 15.07
Total: 49.21 / 175 miles

Road trip to @HonuNui 's house...oh wait. Wish I could make it, that would be amazing.
The possibility of northern lights is pretty exciting. It's cloudy here though so not sure if we'd be able to see them. I would try but staying up that late (best chance around midnight) isn't going to happen for the slim possibility.
Stay safe all you in the possible path of Irma.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative

Even though I was pretty tired from last night's workout, I joined my running buddy who has been out of town for an easy run so we could catch up. Lots of chitchatting made the time go by quickly.

@ariceroni that's awesome!0

9/1 - Rest day
9/2 - 13.18 miles. Very slow, mostly walking. Really struggled with low BG throughout entire run. Depleted electrolytes and had cramping towards end and afterwards.
9/3 - Rest
9/4 - Cross train - hiked 10 miles.
9/5 - Unplanned rest day - seems like I might have sprained left ankle.
9/6 - 6.34 miles (plan was for 8, but trying to be easy on ankle ahead of HM on 9/9)
Upcoming Races:
9/9/17 - Wabash Trace HM
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run HM2 -

*Now... If I could just get him to go somewhere without me*7 -

09/01/17 - 10 miles - mostly Z2
09/02/17 - Rain
09/03/17 - 9 miles - Z2/Z3
09/04/17 - 9 miles - Z2
09/06/17 - Rest
09/07/17 - Strength + 5 miles - Z3/4
Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
10/14/2017 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
So I did my 25 minutes with the weights and tried not to feel too much like a wimp using all the small ones. After that, I went for a run. Since the lifting takes up time, I only planned for 5-6 miles instead of 8-10 like I prefer for my non-long runs, but one must obey the clock. Just means my days of being on the leader board for MFP are probably mostly gone heh.
After my disappointing run on Monday I was ready for another not so great run and set a bit faster pace at the start (yes, typical runner logic), but it felt slow. So I pushed a bit harder. My HR was up from lifting so I was a bit more warmed up and I just went. Well, it seems I was going a bit faster than I thought since RunKeeper flagged the run as my fastest 4-6 mile run, ever. Keep in mind I have over a decade of runs in RunKeeper so that is a big step for me. Maybe my pseudo-training-plan this summer is working after all...
By the numbers:
14% Z2
51% Z3
33% Z4
So it seems that lifting days might be speed days for me. Still working out this anti-t-rex plan.7 -
@MobyCarp Man, I can not imagine how much faster I would have to go to BQ. I have to shave nearly an hour of my current PR. I do not see that happening! But if you run Pittsburgh, make sure you say hi before the race. I will be back with the 4 hour pacer.2

So much for trying to keep up with the September thread! I'm already so far behind. I'll update my miles and try to read/skim through the thread sometime soon.
Today was my 30th birthday. I had the day off work and am going out of town this weekend, so I decided to get my 20 miles in today. I had the perfect excuse to bail since I was diagnosed with a minor upper respiratory infection and costocondritis yesterday, but I was feeling okay after some Tylenol and I actually really wanted to run the 20 miles today, so off I went. I ran the first 10 miles fairly close to my apartment in case things went south, but I was feeling okay. I set out with an overall goal pace of 10:30 min/mile but was okay going slower if I wasn't feeling great. I ended the 20 miles at 3:29:21 (10:28 min/mile) with my fastest mile at mile 19 (9:43). Not a bad birthday run!
I don't know if I've mentioned here yet that I won a contest (along with 19 others) through my local running store for an entry into this year's NYC marathon, courtesy of New Balance. I'm also training for the Columbus Marathon, which is 3 weeks prior. Does anybody have suggestions on how I should approach the time between the two marathons?
9/1: rest
9/2: 15 miles
9/3: rest
9/4: 6 miles
9/5: rest
9/6: 20 miles
TOTAL: 41/185 miles9 -
@7lenny7 I thank you so very much for the info... I got all excited, and then remembered everything to the west of me is on fire, and you can't hardly see town, much less the sky... booo... but I may still go looking this weekend anyways...
My non running update. With trial runs last week, and vacation, and hiking, I was feeling optimistic. Running wasn't terrible, walking was not causing much ankle popping, swelling had stayed down, both with and without the brace. Then physical therapy happened yesterday.... and not only have I been gimpy enough since, that it was noticeable to others, but the swelling was significant enough to be very obvious while wearing the brace. Grrrr.0 -
So smoky here.
Today's run : 3.5
Sept. Total: 9.5
Sept. Goal: 40 miles
I think I am on track. I keep wanting to add a day, but I am going to continue running every other day. I added .5 miles tonight, but I will pull back to 3 for the rest of this week. I am really trying to remain injury free.3
