It only "works" because you end up eating in a calorie deficit. The smoothies are irrelevant. Advice for people to avoid wasting time and money on unnecessary gimmicks shilled by the likes of Dr. Oz is a positive, not a negative.3

Losing 5 lbs in 10 days is mostly water weight and if it were true fat loss, would not be healthy. Did you read past the perceived negativity in the posts advising OP not to do this to really understand what people are trying to say? That cleanses are unnecessary, that a liquid diet is actually lacking in fundamental nutrients, and that if the goal is just to kick off a healthier diet and lose weight in the process - eating a variety of nutrient dense foods in a calorie deficit is a far more sustainable way to see results instead of believing there is something magical about blending the same foods together and drinking them. If a person enjoys smoothies, nothing wrong with including them in that balanced diet.
I'm glad you found a supportive online group for this, personally I would rather hear honest feedback even if it isn't sugar coated about why something I'm considering is not necessary, or even potentially harmful.8 -

Its not a "program" - its nothing more than a very restricted liquid diet which results in a calorie deficit. A deficit too big for most and too big to sustain.
What will these 10 days mean for you 10 weeks from now? 10 months?.... my guess is nothing.
The same calorie deficit that can be achieved with actual food.
Fiber from whole fruits and veggies is just as easily obtainable.
Also most of the weight that you lose initially is water. And thats true with most who alter their CI/CO to lose weight. Its simple math and science.
A "program" like juice "cleanses and detoxes" do nothing for you in the long game.
Support?
How about support from those who eat real food and have long term success which is backed by science. That requires time effort and commitment longer than 10 days. You can lead a horse to water but.....6 -

Of course you get a lot of positivity. It's what the page is for. If you go to a church you'll find a lot of people praising their corresponding diety as well. (not mocking religion, btw)
If you want love and praise for a diet that doesn't really accomplish anything, go to a specific community for that diet. If you want to know how people find long-term success eating well, losing weight and staying healthy, well, you've found it at MFP. Stick around a while.11 -
As I explained upthread, doing it for 10 days seems kind of useless to me, but not harmful if someone wanted to try it. But recommending doing it over and over (like for an extended period of time as your method of achieving a calorie deficit) seems like it probably would just result in someone crashing and burning, but in the off chance you can manage to do it, quite unhealthy -- extreme calorie deficit + lack of protein and healthy fats.
It's especially funny since if someone lives in the US or Europe (I realize some are in the southern hemisphere), right now is when everything is coming into season and we have a few months of amazing fresh produce on offer. Why limit yourself to these smoothie recipes and smoothies only when if you want to eat better and add in more vegetables and fruits, it's so easy and delicious to do so in the context of a normal diet!
(I always really do wonder if this is about people thinking they won't eat vegetables in a normal way, unless they force themselves to do only smoothies or only juices.)7 -

I have heard a little about JJ virgin and I think her big thing is identifying food allergies. You limit several food types that tend to be responsible for food allergies then add them back in one by one. Perhaps this is the type of "cleanse" the op was doing?
I'm not sure that going whole hog on eating lots of nutritious food for 10 days is so awful if it helps get you motivated and on track and off some of your bad trigger foods. But definitely a lifestyle change is needed for long term success.2 -

What? The OP describe a scamwoo juice cleanse, not an elimination diet. There's no food involved, it's all blended up fruit and veg.
And food allergies weren't even mentioned.4 -
JJ Smith and JJ Virgin are not the same person. Both are celebrity nutritionists who are dedicated to the idea you need their special program and stuff you can just do on your own (like cutting calories in a normal way) is not workable. Virgin is all into the sugar is bad stuff (and you aren't fat because you are overeating, but because of food intolerances, which is generally silly), Smith is into her smoothie cleanse and nonsense about detoxifying and jumpstarting, like with most cleanse promoters.
Basically, both are picking up on current trends and buzzwords and using them to market themselves.7 -

People are being negative because they see the word "cleanse" and are making a ton of assumptions. For anyone reading who isn't actual familiar with the JJ Smith Cleanse, understand this: there are no pills, no powders, nothing you have to actually buy, no "liquid diet." You blend whole fruits and veggies into smoothies and are allowed several solid snacks such as boiled eggs and unsalted nuts for protein, not to mention the option of vegan protein powder in the smoothies if you choose. Yes, it can be very low calorie depending how much you snack but it is short term and not designed to be a sustainable weight loss regimen. Basically the "cleanse" is that you are going to poop a lot. I've looked at a lot of before/after photos for this cleanse (in an unofficial facebook group for the cleanse), and most of the weight loss you see is in the stomach. It decreases bloat from water weight and waste, and yes you will lose some weight from fat as well due to the caloric deficit. Yes detox tea is recommended during the cleanse as well, and honestly I haven't hopped on the detox train myself and have good faith in my liver, but this really isn't that bad of a diet and has helped a lot of people kick-start a healthier way of living. Personally I am doing it because of wanting to clear out bloat, and to give me something else to focus on while I quit smoking so I don't overeat and am kept mentally preoccupied with something else. I am on day 3 and down 6 lbs, which I honestly believe is all waste weight (like I said, it makes you poop a lot) and water weight since I have been slamming water. I finally broke a plateau and I feel much better. Also, no smoking is going great. If you want to do it, do it. It's only 10 days and you may find it gives you just the kickstart you want. You are welcome to add me if you'd like. I lost 45 lbs since January with CICO and exercise but I understand the value of this cleanse for someone who feels inspired to do it.21 -
I got sucked into Joe wicks Bodycoach a couple of years ago and now feel massively strongly against any kind of 'pay for weight loss or cleansing scheme. Your cleansing scheme is built in, it's called your digestive system.6

I pointed out elsewhere that I did this mainly to 'detox' my habits and nothing else. I lost 5 lbs in 3 weeks, this was not the quick loss plan for me because i was still eating food and making sure i had snacks available. I needed to do something to get fruits and vegs into my diet, help me plan/prepare, not take up a ton of room at work, and have a clear *end* and transition.
The big thing was in using the MFP food diary, I could see the difference between not-smoothies and smoothies. The amount of sugar in the smoothies from fruit kicks me either to the limit of 60 grams a day or over - and then if I eat anything else? Way over. It was eye opening because before MFP/Smoothies I was not eating well and I dread to think what my sugar intake was just from soda.
It is a tool, but not a long term tool. You have to do the work outside of this one thing to keep moving forward or it's just another gimmick. Gimmicks don't lose weight or get fit.2 -
Like Peanutbuttertuesday mentioned, you don't pay for any additives for the cleanse. It's fruit, veggies, flaxseeds, water, plus protein if you choose. I think I paid like... $8 for the book? and use my nutribullet.
I don't disagree with the idea that detoxing is stupid, I'm just saying that it can be a good jumping off point for people like me. If this was all I was doing? I'd be setting myself up to fail.2 -

If you spend 10 seconds on her website you'll realize it's full of misinformation, as well as a big push to sign up for her '30 Day, Flat Belly' program (special price of only $79), and of course there's also her 'leadership' program. I especially found this claim comical- '80% of weight loss is WHAT you eat!' This guide will help you learn which foods help the body burn fat and which foods cause the body to store fat so you can achieve your weight loss goals. Utter nonsense. No way would I take advice from someone who's intentionally being misleading like this.
OP-I drink a green smoothie every day. It's a good way to get in the leafy greens, but it doesn't do anything magical. Just eat your veggies and fruit and focus on a balanced and sustainable way of eating, one that promotes a healthy weight and one that you can do long term.

Ive the cleanse and i can say it gets your bowels moving and moves inches from your waist. I noticed it didnt change the junk food crazings i had. But the smoothies i do drink for breakfast and are a good way to consume veggies.11

you lost inches because it cleaned you out it didnt remove fat.I experience the same thing when I eat a lot of fiber2 -
If the smoothies (blended whole vegetables, no fiber removed as in "juicing") sound appealing to you guys, try them out!
Friends of mine have had "green drink" of blended vegetables every morning for a couple years. Honestly, theirs has pineapple or pineapple juice, so loooots of sugar. Natural sugar, but sugar all the same. It's a big volume of food reduced to a glass and they use it to supplement meals (not as meal replacement) to incorporate more vegetables in their diet.
I enjoy eating vegetables, and much much prefer eating them to drinking them. And I don't like my vegetables sweetened, but that's my preference. So I wouldn't like it but to each their own. If you try it and like it and it helps you eat the vegetables you need, maybe have one a couple days a week. I would not use it to replace meals because... macros. And I certainly wouldn't replace ALL meals much less all meals for several days. It just sounds monotonous and I'd be so hungry without fat & protein. You might enjoy them more as a regular snack than as a grueling "cleanse." I'm not being negative, just practical. Good luck whatever you choose!4 -
I did the 10 day cleanse. I'm glad I did it, at the time...but I have no desire or plan to do it again. There were some benefits to the cleanse, though: (1) I learned new smoothie recipes. (2) I learned that drinking smoothies all day is WACK! (3) I learned how to incorporate smoothies into my healthy diet, not make them a diet, and (4) I gained some self control. At the end of the 10 days, I think I was 10 pounds lighter, but as I went back to eating 'normal' (not unhealthy foods, either), I was up five pounds. So I guess I actually lost 5 pounds of actual fat, I don't know.3

Most likely everyone who replied never bothered to pick up this book, if they had they'd know:
A- she a nutritionist
B - The first thing she says is the cleanse is not a weight-loss program.
C - this program helps reset your body's cravings. If you're a sugar-holick this is absolutely necessary.
D- You can eat as many of the healthy snacks as you want during the cleanse.
But yes you do spend some time in the bathroom because it's cleaning out the built up waste.
I no longer drink coffee with all that artificial sweetener as I have more energy than I've ever had.
If you're on FB join the discussion groups, you'll be amazed.
Notes: add the protein - I like garden of life.
Add collagen - your skin hair nails will be beautiful! Plan your snacks!
Doctor was amazed with my blood work results too!
So in short don't do this if you think you'll drop 20 lbs in 20 days .... Do this if you want to change your eating habits and become the most healthy beautiful person that you can be. Buy both of her books!16 -
