Ticked a couple of boxes today. My goal of four half marathons for the year, and improved my time by ten minutes. Still need to do 49km for the month, but the hubby thinks its manageable.14 -

Did my AIM at Melanoma virtual 5k this morning! It was a slow pace, but I finished it. Ribs were complaining at the end. Gorgeous day for it though! Wear sunscreen, everyone. In memory of Steve and with my heart going out to our Honu Nui. Hope your race today in Hawaii is fantastic!

I was supposed to do the usual Saturday morning ride of 44 miles but it started raining about 5 miles out and I don't like to ride in the rain, so I turned around and went home. I wanted to run the 5K AIM run anyway so it worked out!
As I'm riding home alone in the rain alone I see a HUGE rainbow.
Got home, changed out of soaking wet cycling clothes and put on running clothes (that's not easy when you are drenched) and then ran my 5K for the AIM at Melanoma 5K run! It was a great run and I was faster than I've been lately. I was thinking of @Hononui and her son and how amazing it would be to see people from all over the world running for both of them.

Nice, slow, easy 5 miles. Glad tomorrow is a rest day, I’m tired! I’m trying not to freak out about 43.5 miles in the training plan for next week.5 -
@RunsOnEspresso I have to ask... what pack do you have? Would a bottle fit in the sleeves on the front? Does the pack bounce at all?
I have an Osprey Raptor currently, which I like - it is a bicycling pack and does not bounce at all. It fits a 3L hydration reservoir and the bit valve has a magnet to attach to the sternum strap for quick on/off. However, I want to packs for next year that have space in the back for stuff (first aid kit, BG meter, snacks, wallet, keys, headlamp, etc) with water bottles in the front. I'm thinking it might be nice to have a pack without all of the weight in the back, so putting water bottles in front would work for that.
If anyone else has a suggestion of good packs that can convert betweeen a hydration bladder and front/chest water bottles or both at once if I really want to add on some weight... but not really because I'd just bring a filter to get water from streams for such length.... I'm open to suggestions. I'm hoping to start increasing distance on trail runs next year, so fortunately I have several months to mull it over and do some research.
Side-note: I don't know why, but I normally drink a ton of water. Even on short runs around town, I'm always carrying a 20 oz. water bottle and will go through about 5 oz. per mile. On most trails in my area, I can get by with 1 or 2 bottles sized 16 oz.-20 oz. because there are streams, lakes/ponds frequently. There are a few, however, where I take the 3L reservoir because of a lack of access to water. I am just looking for a pack for those other trails and to distribute weight more evenly between front and back.0 -

Stop, Drop and Run! Is in the books. The "5k" turned out to be 4.5 miles, but I think I read the signs wrong because there was a 5k without obstacles also. It was nothing like the Spartan Race, far more sane. My wife, son and a co-worker all ran as a team. There were walls to scales, nets to cross, things to carry, and even a smoke-filled blacked out maze to navigate on your hands and knees. Good fun. No idea on place because we just ran the course without paying attention to any of that.
Wore the GoPro on my head for the race and my co-worker wore one in a chest mount so we plan to edit the footage together. I will post a video if we can get anything reasonable out of it.
I have to get some work done but hope to do the SPAM 5k this evening.

Oct 14 Chick-Fil-A 5K in Sanford NC. Finished 2nd in 40 and above age group. Missed getting my free chick-fil-a for a year by one spot, but finished 5 min behind the winner, so I wasn't really all that close. He had me by nine years in age, so I am not too disappointed. Most frustrating thing about the day is they measured the course short by .2 miles, so I don't know what my time over a true 5K would have been. I was 21:47 over the 2.9 mile distance so I think I could have finished somewhere around 23:30 which would have been a PR for me by 30 secs. Oh well, I still had fun.
Congrats to everyone who raced today. I hope you all did well.

@midwesterner85 It's a Nathan Moxy Women's. I don't notice it bouncing. The one pocket will fit a water bottle but I use it for my phone. The other side I don't think would. I use it for gels, vaseline, money etc. There's also a pocket on the back with a clip for keys. I've also put my phone in the back when it's raining but then I can't pull it out and change what I'm listening to as easily.
And yes, I take it on every run. Even short runs. My throat gets really dry. I just vary how much water I fill it with.1 -

Congrats @cburke8909 ! Awesome job getting out there all you virtual racers! I had a shakeout run this morning with my local FF group and I was thinking about @HonuNui and her son.
Also, congratulations to everyone who has raced recently! I've somewhat kept up with those of you who have posted in the FB group as that is easier for me, but I haven't had time to keep up with this thread. I miss you guys and wish I had more time!
As I mentioned above, I had a shakeout run this morning. I'll be running the Columbus Marathon tomorrow and the pre-race nerves/excitement has set in. I've had some sick co-workers the past week or so (plus I work with germy kids) and have been doing my best to take my vitamins, emergen-c, wash hands, drink plenty of fluids, get lots of sleep, and do anything else I can to stay healthy. I started getting a little congested earlier this week and it moved into my sinuses yesterday, so I've also added in sinuses rinses and picked up some medicine. I slept with the humidifier on last night and woke up in the middle of the night with a really sore throat but actually felt better overall this morning (knocking on every piece of wood I can find). Needless to say, I've done everything in my power short of going to the doctor (who probably wouldn't do anything else for me anyway). I'm hoping it's enough to not effect me during the race tomorrow. I've got a few goals for the marathon, but I think the higher-than-normal temps for this time of year forecasted for tomorrow may change those. I'd really, really like to beat my PR of 4:42. From the moment I finished the Chicago Marathon last year, that has been my goal for this year. I'd love to be under 4:35 and I'd be super happy if I could be under 4:30. It's supposed to feel like 68 degrees with 84% humidity tomorrow at the start...pretty warm for an October marathon in Columbus. However, looking at the hourly forecast, it may only rise a few degrees until I'm finished and the humidity will go down. I'm really hoping for a nice race, but I will also have another shot in NYC in a few weeks.6 -

Today's notes – Saturday morning, and beautiful weather for running. Today we were based at Durand Eastman Park, on the shore of Lake Ontario. I got this shot of the lake a few minutes before we started:
There's an asphalt trail along the lake shore at this point, and that's where the group organizes into pace groups:
The distances offered were 7, 8, 11, and 13 miles. As a pacer, I planned to run the full 13. Things didn't turn out that way, but I'm okay with that. Turned we had pacers for 7:30, 8:00 (me) and 8:30 per mile with only one runner showing up. He's a guy we're trying to teach to slow down, so he can be more comfortable in the second half of his next marathon. Anyway, the assigned 7:30 and 8:30 guys decided to run the 7 mile loop faster, leaving me to slow down our pacee. Well, I kinda sorta did.
Somewhere around 5.5 miles there is a scenic overlook to Lake Ontario, where the instructions say to stop for a selfie. I did that; my poor selfie skills show in that I didn't get much of a recognizable lake in the background. I had hoped to capture a boat we saw, but by the time I got the photo organized I would have missed that even if I had been a competent selfie photographer.
Anyway, I didn't pause the watch for that selfie. It took longer than I had expected. As a result, mile 6 came in at 9:06 (including the selfie stop). For reference, my pacee probably should be running with the 9:00 pace group. A good mile for him, LOL.
Got back to base, and the average at that point was 8:17. So I managed to slow down from the 8:00 that I'd find comfortable, but not as much as I should have. The 13 mile route was adding another 6 mile loop the other direction; my pacee only needed 11 miles, so we did the first 2 miles of that loop as an out and back. At least is was pretty territory, along the lake shore for a mile then in a wooded area for the other mile.
As the sun rose and the day got to be more comfortable for people who weren't running, we saw several people out walking friendly dogs. We passed this bunch going out and coming back on the second part, and I had to get a picture of the wounded dog with wheels. It helped that the dog was making friendly with another pacer.
I ended up with an average pace of 8:12 for the 11 miles. My pacee should be a bit quicker (he runs with no watch) because he ran ahead of me the last half mile. I didn't feel like running a 7:30 pace just to keep him company, and I didn't have the heart to yell at him for going too fast that close to the end of the run.
Running 11 instead of 13 miles wasn't all that bad a thing. I'm still coming back from injury, and it won't hurt me to ramp up the distance a little slower. And this is the first week since injury that I've run 5 days, so a more conservative distance is likely a good idea.

@midwesterner85 I have this hydration vest/pack and have been quite happy with it. I specifically ordered it for the pouches on the front that would fit water bottles and the fact that it has several other pockets on the front and one bigger one on the back in addition to the large pocket for the water bladder. You can either order it with the water bottles included or the water bladder included. I opted for the water bladder as I have a ton of water bottles/flasks from other hydration belts and those fit perfectly inside the pockets (they're the 9-10 oz Nathan kind). It doesn't bounce either, but I will say that I have learned to put a little vaseline on my collarbone near my shoulders or I will get a little rubbing/chafing there.2

Both knees and ankles felt tweaky after Thursday's run so I bought new shoes today. I do think I'm nursing a mild case of runner's knee on the left side especially since it doesn't hurt while I'm actually running. I read one of the causes can be thigh weakness which also fits. A few years ago I fell really badly on that side to the point where my quad is permanently indented. Thinking I will step up the strength training as the season gets colder. It was a beauty of a bruise when it happened (and I was pregnant and didn't know it yet, which made for some extra anxiety when I did find out, but all was well on that score).
I'll head out for my run today in an hour or two. Plan is for 5.5-6km, just haven't decided my route yet.

Now I feel really bad that I didn't take a photo when I ran the virtual race.
But at least I did run it today! Usually, I would have taken a rest day today; I've been running (although mostly only short runs) each day for the last 7 days because the weather was so nice, and went indoor climbing four times, plus a bit of cycling on top of that. And (TMI!) it's that time of month and I just wanted to curl up on the couch...
In the end, I didn't let any of those excuses count and went outside to race 5km. I waited until the afternoon, so that it would also be Saturday in Hawaii, and then ran a ~3km as warm-up (and to get the hills in my immediate neighbourhood out of the way before the race ). It was an untypically hot day for October, 21°C. With blue skies and sunshine, and I was running a route with almost no shadow. It seemed kind of fitting!
It wasn't a 5k PR. Twice I slowed to walk for a short bit, but then I reminded myself that I wasn't running just for myself, but also for @HonuNui and Steve and our MFP team, and that was enough to push me to run again.
I was hoping I would manage to run 5km in less than 30 minutes. When my watch beeped for the 5km, my time was at 29:07. I ran a few extra meters to make sure Strava would really count it as 5.0km, but even with those, I was below my goal, I'm really happy with that.
I don't know if anybody who saw the T-Shirt will look up the website and read about the race. But I've been more careful mysellf this year to use sunscreen than I was in the past. And I told a few people that I would run this race today and why; I hope it will help a bit to increase their awareness as well.

I did the AiM at Melanoma virtual 5K today. I really tried to treat it like a race. It was harder "racing" alone, but I used a course that I ran for a 5k in July and I beat my time in that race by about 11 seconds so I felt good about it. I was thinking if @HonuNui and hoping the actual race in Hawaii went well.

So I’m on a running vacation and this morning we did 7 miles of very very squelchy trail, lots of puddles, peat and bogs and a few good rocks to slip off. I went into the bogs up to my knees and had to be pulled out a couple of times.
Oddly also a couple of panic attacks - I think related to starting running too fast, and feeling bad because I’m so much slower than everyone else.
And I was running with this guy - who had NO SHOES....his feet were cleaner than the rest of ours at the end.
So after lunch, and a few movement adjustments and games, it was time to head out for my AIM at Melanoma race. I only had the camp organiser for company- everyone else bailed. We ran on the roads, with headtorches, and I ran in my walking trainers as the only other shoes I have are soggy trail shoes. Had to add on a bit to make distance, but I ran most of it!!

@OSUbuckeye906 Good luck with tomorrow's race, and I hope you manage to crack your goal. I was also taking in the Emergen-C drinks during taper to help boost my immune system and keep other people's sicknesses at bay!

Today was a walk/run mixture with both my six and sixteen year old boys. The entire family took part in The Bubble Run, and the lads wanted to run with me (the others walked with my wife), although the youngest had to take a lot of walking breaks. Overall good clean fun, but the organization of the run itself left a lot to be desired.
I'll probably do a proper run tonight, and see if my sixteen year old wants to join me for a run without lots of walking breaks!

Had a pretty great run this morning. Was looking back at my running log and realized the issue with my quads/hips started not long after I got my new running shoes. I dug out my old Skora Tempos from retirement and while the issue wasn't gone 100% it was 85-90% better and my gait and form actually felt normal. I hadn't plan to go so far, just wanted to get my S.P.A.M. AIM for the Cure Melanoma 5K in and maybe a mile or two more. I figure the 5k was somewhere in the middle of the 8+ miles and wasn't fast, probably 2 mins over my PR pace but it is perfectly ok.
Like @_nikkiwolf_ - I wish I had taken a photo for the AIM collection too like @Elise4270 @RunsOnEspresso @ddmom0811 and @katharmonic! I too was thinking about Steve and @HonuNui and hoping the physical race in Hawaii went well, she wasn't too terribly stressed by it and could stop for a few moments to soak it all in. I am so thankful my parents (my dad especially) forced me to use sunscreen well before it was considered the norm. He had very fair skin and a sun allergy sores that developed into melanoma late in his life. He would put this terrible smelling, thick sunblock on my face and ears, it was awful stuff but I am appreciative now!

@MobyCarp - loving all the pictures. It does look like a perfect morning for a run! We have a pup that I see on the trail here with a contraption like the one in your picture. It is pretty ingenious when you think about it. It allows an otherwise healthy dog with an injury that would have been put down in the past, lead a pretty normal life.
@sarahthes - wow! that bruise was serious! Did you see a doctor at the time? I would have worried something was broken or torn. I am glad it all turned out ok though.

Today's notes: You know you're a trail runner when.... 3 hours driving, round trip, seems OK for a 2 hour run.... Got up at 0400 and was on the road at 0420. Met my pacer for next week and got to work. First 3 miles were SLOW and easy. Technical running on a ROCKY trail in the dark, plus difficulty navigating meant that the first 3 miles were all 17min+/mile. The next 5 were better, with 2 miles at 15:30, a 12:30is mile, and the last 2 at ~13:30.... Average pace ended up being 15:30. It was a good run, meeting my pacer and getting used to the SHT both made driving longer than running more than worth it.
