After today I finally feel like I can start to think about such things in the future again. Several milestones for me today: longest run (9 mi!) since Feb, highest mileage week of the year so far, and lowest body weight in 2.5 years. And my 8 year old son ran the last 4 miles with me which was much fun. All good. Ankle/foot a little ouchy afterwards but did my serious stretching program and going to ice here for a bit. Celebrated by signing up for a winter night trail half marathon in January. And I am going to do my PT before I go to bed tonight. 3+ more on Tuesday and I think I've got this goal.

@katharmonic of course you ran! I also had a 5k this morning. As expected my #1 bib bore no resemblance to my place number. I came 18th out of 65 in my age-group (my time was 28:47, and there were loads of us all within a few seconds of each other). I was the 120th female out of 491, and 343rd out of 891 over all. Perfect running conditions, and free beer and pizza afterwards. What's not to like?12

Today I had another race, not feeling it after yesterdays challenge but my children had a 1k childrens race as well so I didnt want to let them down. It was billed as a few gentle hills but had an elevation of 512ft!

@katharmonic Great job on the 5k! The wardrobe malfunction reminded me of a runner during my marathon where the elastic in her shorts was a little looser than it should have been; anyone immediately behind her was treated to an up-close-and-personal viewing of the top half of her butt with every bounce in her stride.

In other news, per @PastorVincent's suggestion I sent an email to the original developer of the watch face I implemented, and he responded pretty quickly saying that while he intended to update his app at some point for newer devices, he just didn't have the time these days. With that, he said that I should go ahead and push my version to Garmin so that other 935 owners will have the option to use it. Overall a pretty cool guy, and now my app is currently with Garmin being evaluated.

@garygse She planned to give me her key fob because I had my phone so I had on my belt, but I did a warm up run and she did not, when I got back I hit the porta john and never saw her again until after the race. I just laughed way too hard. She wore a pair of my gloves and said she wanted to wash them before giving them back, quite frankly I was afraid to ask why. ha ha

Got up at 6:00 am today, the only morning I had to sleep in, to register for the Oak Barrel Half in Lynchburg TN in April 2018. This race filled up today in under 90 minutes. @Stoshew71 did you decide to run? It's so hard to get in that you get early entry registration if you have run it 3 of the past 5 years. Everyone says you HAVE to run Oak Barrel so at first I was going to wait and run it with Skip next year (2019) since she'll have a T&F meet the same day in 2018, but she said no mommy run it now I know you have been dying to do it. Depending on where her meet is I will probably get there in time for 2 of her 3 races anyway.1 -

@carolineb81 Excellent Time for that course. Then to go out and do it again the next day - Amazing what Parents will do to put a smile on a childs face. That start looks similar to the start of one of my favorite local events the Emperor's challenge - except they give us 500m to get into the run and then its all uphill for 10km, then you peak out and it's all downhill to the Finish line. Was that mostly Trail or was it a mix trail & road?
@JessicaMcB Unsupported 100km You need one of the Bear Proof Barrels that Whitewater canoeist use as a midpoint stash for Gear and Goodies. Have fun. As part of a FB Hiking Group I have seen a lot of recent Pic's with lots of snow up high in your area and south of you along the Parkway.

I had a lovely 8.1 mile run this morning. The weather was just perfect. When I got home my husband had already started a fire and was getting ready to grill some burgers. It was so nice to sit out in the yard. It was cold yesterday (we had our first freeze of the year) and I was glad it was my rest day. Plus we noticed Friday that we have a gas leak at our house and we had to turn off the gas so no hot water and no furnace. Thankfully we have several electric space heaters and plenty of family in town to go take showers. It really makes you grateful for the conveniences we take for granted.
I also did some yoga this afternoon. Mostly because I love yoga and it is my favorite way to stretch. But it is also a good way to relax and relieve stress. Between the long run and the yoga I have been able to not stress too much about calling the plumber tomorrow.

The 20km race today was really great!
The weather was perfect, maybe a little cold (started at 7°C/44F and finished at 10°C/50F), but the predicted rain never came. And I liked the course. It started in the centre, but quickly left the city to lead out past the airport (the main sponsor of the event, so I guess we had to visit them ) into the countryside. And most of the hills were in the first half: 150m up, 110m down during the first 10km, 50m up and 90m down during the second half.
For the first half of the race, I stayed with the 2:10 pacer. In building up my long runs back up again (after hurting my knee two month ago) I hadn't gotten further than 17.5km, so I wanted to make sure I went out slow enough that I wouldn't have any trouble finishing.
At first I thought it was really nice not to have to think about my pace, just follow somebody else. But more and more, I realised that he slowed down a lot more on the climbs than I would have done, and sped up accordingly on the flats. Like, sped up a lot, to keep the average pace on target. We run the first 5km in 32:30, and I was a few steps behind him and reached the 10km timing mat after 1:05:05, soI guess he crossed it in 1:05:00 on the spot. Sticking so well to a pace is impressive! But it just wasn't my "feel-good pacing strategy". Plus I was feeling really well at that point, so I decided to run the second half a bit faster.
I managed to run the second 10km in 1:01:39 and finished in 2:06:44. Not a PR (actually 20s slower than my half marathon PR, despite the fact that this was 1.1km less). But considering that it's a bit faster than what I expected, and especially that my knee didn't complain at all, I'm quite happy with this result.
And I really love all the bling that I got! Long-sleeved tech shirt, bag, buff (two even - one with the event logo and a plain gray one), and a fancy medal
And I just realised this leaves me with 151.4 km for the month so far. So I already reached my 150km goal, even if
I decide to be lazy on Monday and Tuesday!16 -
I'm way behind again - 800 new posts - so I only went back a few pages. Looks October has been a great running month for all of you!
@MNLittleFinn Not everyone is superhuman like @JessicaMcB ...you definitely deserved that week off and I'm sure your body appreciated the recovery time as well

Got out for a run this morning after yesterday spent feeling sorry for myself (read 'hungover'). I'm still on a walk/run interval but I must've not been paying attention as send to be walking way longer than I'm supposed to. They were setting up on my route for a zombie run so I cut it a bit short so as not to be overwhelmed by the Undead...
I was supposed to be running another Half next weekend, but have deferred my place until next year. I know I could do the distance, but given my recent form I just don't think it would be FUN.
I have a plan to switch focus from running to strength training for three months. I will still run a little bit, but no more than 10k for a long run. And try and work on speed at shorter distances. Although it may be that with a focus on strength i can't actually run at all!!!
With that in mind, I'm doing a CrossFit taster on Friday. It may not be my thing, but I won't know until I try.4 -

My plan was to finish running the miles to complete this month...only 2 miles shy of goal. However tomorrow I am getting lab work done that I was supposed to have done last Monday. And I alway get extremely hungry after a run. So will finish my month's goal tomorrow after my getting my blood drawn.
Last week I finally visited the Kentucky Derby museum and Churchill Downs. It is on my bucket list. I am a long time horse racing fan....since I was a teenager (Riva Ridge...1972...and hooked). Just love watching those horses run. (Breeders Cup this weekend!) While I was at the museum, I noted a breakdown of what they feed the animals and why. They get a fair amount of flaxseed which is supposed to help vitamins be assimilated. So I started adding more fat in my diet...will let you know how that does. Borage oil and flaxseed, for now. I work 12 hour night shifts...so always feel like I have to have a day or two to recover.
While in the Louisville area, my brother (who looked great) told me that he started seeing a chiropractor. He has been having neck pain (stiff neck) and it has really helped him. The chiropractor recommended trail running to help him improve his posture, flexibility and balance....and was told that yes, he would trip over tree roots, but that was okay.
Love you guys...I am hoping to catch up with posts but know at this point....maybe better luck next month.

Week ended with Chicago's Hot Chocolate 15K which was by far the largest race in terms of participants (nearly 10,000 runners in the 15K and ~16,000 running the 5K, and later in the morning a slew of 2 mile walkers) that I have run to date. Was very brisk (temp in the low 30's) and the race started at 7:30 with coral's being released every 4 minutes or so. I was assigned to Coral F so I departed at ~7:50. Even with the timed departures it was congested for the first 2 miles as we weaved our way under the city utilizing roads below street level. At around mile 2.8 the 5K runners turned off to the finish and we continued our journey through the city. GPS/Garmin doesn't fair well in the underpass/high rises of the city so when I was alerted that my first mile was less than 7 minutes, I was fairly confident that I was not that speedy and I had enough training to know that I was not at my fastest but I was still pressing as best I could. Since I knew the 5K split from the 15K was around 2.8 miles I took a peak at my watch and the overall time regardless of reported watch paces was saying I would likely run an ~24 min 5K (actual was 24:11). With the course somewhat opening up, I kept up my pace and at 10K mark I looked again and I was in the 48:30 range which is right on track with a 10K finish a couple weeks back (Overall a 7:48/Mile pace). We had made the turn at this point and we were running up the lake shore, the air was still cold but it felt good. Ran by Solider Field and the Field Museum that had some rolling inclines until we hit Grant Park and basically had the last 1/3 of a mile to go. My pace slowed a bit in that last 5k, however I picked up my pace as I saw the finish. I ran the last 5K in 24:30 - completing the race in 1:13:01. Ended up 24th of 253 in my age/gender and in the top 500 overall. Overall very happy with the race and especially that my 5K splits stayed relatively consistent. @Orphia partially because I just wanted to (to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift, right?) and partially because my trainer wanted a 100k speed baseline for us to work from while we build towards LSU100 next year.
I actually pared down a lot because I knew from Whistler that my piri would be shot and I didn't need more weight on it. So 2L filled bladder with Elete additive, 10 salt pills, my 50km pill packet (2 Naproxen, 1 Immodium, 200mg caffeine), a 10oz bottle of keto-ade, my lamp, a thermal headband, my phone, my spare battery and chicken in a sandwich bag.
@juliet3455 love the pictures, you guys are awesome! Yeah it got to white out type nonsense when I was running highway- that was fun lol.
@skippygirlsmom what is up with the crazy sell out races!!! LSU historically sells out within an hour of opening- I am high key stressed out about this. I hope it lives up to the hype!

So 100km in 10:38:02. Today cemented for me that my competitive distance is the ultra- I am not afraid of suffering and that is a big strength in longer distance. There were a million things that happened today that the Jessica of time gone by would have used as an excuse to pack it in- *kitten* her.

Today's notes – Yesterday I looked at the hourly forecast, and ran in the morning to avoid the rain. That gave me more than 24 hours to think about running in the rain today. The forecast was accurate; we had rain or showers pretty much continually from early yesterday afternoon to now, and I don't know when it will stop.
So . . . rain and 45º F (7º C). This is not my favorite weather for running, though it would be worse if it were a few degrees colder. This is the kind of weather that gets me to look out the window, procrastinate starting the run, and maybe end up swapping tomorrow's rest day onto today.
But today there was a race. I was committed.
With plenty of time to think about it, I put a change of clothes in the car. And lots of plastic bags, more than I thought I'd need. I took 2 pair of dry socks, trainers to warm up in, spikes to run the race, and walking shoes to have a dry pair after the race. Logistically, about the only thing I missed was that I only took one pair of running gloves.
Pete Glavin XC #4 was actually 3 cross country races. The women's race started at 11:00, the masters men's race started at 11:45, and the open men's race started at 12:30. The course is a loop; women and masters men ran 3 loops for 6K, open men ran 4 loops for 8K. I started my warmup at 10:45, and got one full loop of the course and a partial loop before stopping behind the starting area to watch the women start their race. My hands started out cold, because I didn't want to get my only running gloves wet on the warmup; but they warmed up well enough. The course wasn't too bad.
Later, some women I talked to confirmed that the course deteriorated with each lap. It was definitely worse on my first lap than on my warmup, and it deteriorated a little each lap I ran. I started out hard across the grass pointing at where the turn onto the chalk-marked loop was, and I was pleased that Garmin shows my start across that grass as a straight line. I guess I ran a near-perfect tangent to open the race.
Later, the tangents weren't perfect. There were places where I had to choose between cutting the corners tight and having better footing. There were also a couple of places where I was able to run good tangents on decent footing, with the course showing that most runner ran poor tangents. I had the advantage of having practiced on the course 10 days ago, when I noted several odd tangents.
The pack sorted itself out in less than one loop, and I ran most of the race in space, i.e. there was a largish gap between me and a pack of runners ahead of me, and I couldn't hear footsteps or spectators cheering people behind me. My ankle didn't bother me during the race, but I didn't really push for a 5K type pace; I mostly ran about threshold level of effort. And I got T pace type results. Garmin reports mile splits of 6:38, 6:54, 6:52, and a 6:44 pace for the last partial mile, for an average of 6:47 per mile. Not as fast as I'd like for this short a race, but quite acceptable for the course conditions and my own current level of conditioning. Garmin said 25:32.3 total; official time was 25:32.8. I did a pretty good job of starting and stopping the watch timely.
There is no bling to brag about. Pete Glavin #4 was also the USATF Niagara Region Cross Country Championship, which meant it drew a strong field. My result was good for 36th of 78 overall (in a field of men over 40 years old), and 4th of 26 in the M 60-69 age group. The GVH Men's 60-69 team finished second (2-4-11) behind Syracuse Track Club (1-3-5). If we had one more guy healthy, we would have been competitive for first.
I'm not terribly fond of cross country, but I'll run it to support the team. I remarked to one of our 50-59 runners afterward that I hated cross country, and he said, "You have to embrace it." And I thought of this group. Yeah, today was a real "Embrace the Suck" kind of day.
My phone stayed in its plastic bag before and during the race, but I did pull it out in the shelter afterward to take a couple pictures of how muddy my legs got:
Of course, the open men got muddier than I did, because they had a worse field to work with and had to run 4 laps.
And then came the post-race online results monitoring. This was the next to last race in the USATF Niagara Runner of the Year series. Masters results are scored by age grade. I age graded 14th, which doesn't get me any points; but it gives me a 4th race in the series so my score will count. There were 2 guys who could beat me that needed to run both of the last 2 races to get their 4 races in. One didn't run. The other ran, but didn't show up on the USATF age grade scoring. My best guess is that he signed up for the race to run for his club in the Pete Glavin series, but didn't bother to put in his USATF number. (RunSignUp made me manually enter my number for this race. It auto-filled my number for the other 3 races in the ROY series I ran. I don't know why.)
So I could be looking at being the USATF Niagara Region Masters Men's Runner of the Year by default, from not having anybody who age grades consistently better than I do run enough races. If that happens, I'll take it. Depending on the status of that one guy, there are only 5 or 6 guys left who can complete 4 or 5 races in the series; none of the others can pass my point total even if they age grade first at the indoor track 5000 meter event that is the last ROY race. And if that one guy doesn't run the indoor track 5000m, it doesn't matter what his status was today.

I think that's what I need to start doing. I've been letting my speed-work lapse in favour of building up my distance for my half in November.
I was looking at the photos from today's race and noticed that the woman who finished in 12th place in my age-group looked decidedly more like a 'Steve' than a 'Stella'. A quick check of the corresponding men's age-group confirmed that Steve and Stella had accidentally switched bibs. A shame really because Stella ran the race a darn sight faster than her husband, and should have been awarded second place.1 -
@ereck44 Glad you were able to go down to Churchill Downs and the KD Museum! I think we've talked about how I'm a horseracing fan as well. For my birthday in September (my 30th!), my mom and I went down to Louisville and Lexington to do a bunch of horse stuff. We went on an early backside tour of Churchill Downs where we got to see some horses doing morning exercises, visited the KD musuem, went on a tour at Darley (saw Nyquist and others), went on a tour at Old Friends (saw Silver Charm and others), and visited Keeneland during their preview of the yearling sale. It was awesome and my only regret is not being able to see my girl Songbird but they weren't letting anyone see her at the time. I hope to go down there again soon to be able to see her (hopefully she stays in KY) as well as American Pharoah and California Chrome. I hope to run the Kentucky Derby Marathon again - hopefully either in 2018 or 2019.

I haven't yet added up my mileage for October, but I'm guessing it's pretty low as my marathon was right in the middle, so it includes taper and recovery. Yep, just added it up and I'm at 101.7 with just another short run or two before the month is over. Saturday was my last long run before the NYC Marathon and what better way to end this season's marathon training with the first snowfall? It was 30F and a wintry mix was falling from the sky when my alarm went off. I really wanted to roll over and go back to bed, but I ultimately decided to meet the informal off-season long run group at FF. I'm really glad I went as the run turned out to not be so bad after all. The cooler weather was a much welcomed change and we even saw a large buck running along the path about 1.5 miles in. The running store we met at is in a shopping center on the top of a large hill and the running path is at the bottom. Nice to start out, but not always pleasant at the end of a long run when you have to make it back up the hill. Throughout my run, the wintry mix starting changing over to snow and as I was slogging along up the hill at the end, it started snowing huge white snowflakes. That put a smile on my face and helped me finish strong.
As I previously mentioned, the NYC Marathon is next week and I'm a jumbled mess of nervous and excited. This will be my 10th marathon, so I'm not a stranger to that beast but the logistics of this race are like no other. I'm more excited than anything, but am slightly nervous about all the pre-race logistics and how they'll affect my race. Most specifically, the fact that I will be needing to wake up about 6 hours before my 11am start time and what I should eat in the in-between. Also the fact that I'll be traveling to NYC the day before and how I should go about carb loading the day before. My other fear is that my hip will be bothering me as much as it did during the Columbus Marathon a few weeks ago. I felt like I had a sufficient week of recovery and healing afterward (only 7 slow/short miles that week) but last week's runs left my hip and then my shin bugging me a little more than I would like. I know that I can help that with making sure I stay on top of the exercises I should be doing this week, but I hope that's enough. So that, along with sleeping and eating right, will be my main focus this week. Speaking of which, I should probably go do those things.7 -
Whee! I ran 11.3 miles today and hit my goal of 100 miles.... 100.6 to be exact.
And there's still two more running days left. This makes me happy.
Since I had had probably the worst week in a long-*kitten* time, today was basically a "run til you drop" sort of day. I didn't actually drop, but I ran for two solid hours. Haven't had a good two-hour run since the very beginning of the month.
And I'm way behind on posts. I just hope everyone is doing okay and running strong.11 -
Napped a good deal after the race. Improved my 10k time by 7 minutes today. Calf felt great until I decided to sprint to the finish and it seized up again. Hating myself for that moment because it basically means another week of rest. The HM I was planning on is 6 weeks away and I had just finished the 7 week long run in the Hal Higdon Novice 1 HM plan.

Got some unexpected news this morning. The friend who said he'd run with me at the HM had a heart attack yesterday! He's 55, never smoked, never drank, and runs 20-30 miles a week. Has done HMs before. They're doing a heart cath on him tomorrow.

Yesterday’s long run was hard because I have not been getting in my runs in durin g the week due to travel. Since my husband and kids had no where to be yesterday morning, I was able to travel to our local university to run around the lakes. Around the lKez is a total of 6 miles. I did walk from mile 3.5 to mile 5.5 because I made a wrong turn and needed a bathroom and had to walk until I found one and then I finished the last half mile walking. These beauties were on the lake yesterday morning:
No travel this week so no excuses on getting my running done!5 -
