Welcome to the November 2017 Cycling Challenge thread!
This is a continuation of the October thread.

ohhim wrote:If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.
This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.
There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

I'm in again. Summer's coming!!
And for those miserable days, there's always indoor cycling.0 -
First indoor bike training session of the winter and more like an IT training course.
Had to remember how to connect my HRM to the bike, my phone to the WiFi and and also to the bike, the bike to my Garmin to pick up the power and cadence sensors and then control the bike from a phone app. Phew!
Data flying everywhere....
To get my head around using power as my intensity metric again did a variety of workouts:
20 min fast (meaning fast for me of course!) @ 211 watts, 40 min steady ride at 160 watts and then a fast 3 min sprint @ 247 watts.2 -

Got an outdoor ride in today - was in two minds whether to cycle as temperature was borderline for me (9c) but so glad I did. Beautiful mostly bright day with dry roads. Hands and feet cold but not dead!

Oh man, I've had a pretty poor cycling year. Also a pretty poor year for maintaining my weight loss. Ugh, whyyyyy???? But, better late than never, gearing myself up for winter bike commuting! I'm hoping for no snow for a little while longer yet so I can ride my new (to me) bike - a teeny tiny Waterford ST-14. Holy heck I'm in love. Once the snow hits and stays, I'll need to drag out my old winter rig, which needs some significant work. Bah.
11/2 - 28 miles
11/3 - 8 miles (last outing for my road bike for the year. I put it down in the basement to hibernate after this ride, sniff sniff)

11/7 - 18 miles - signed up for the masters swim team at the Y. Alarm set for 4:45 to bike to the gym for the 6:30 practice. Instead, I stayed in bed until 6:45. Hard to motivate oneself out of bed when it's so freakin cold. Going to try again on Thursday.

Happy dance in the gym today - set a new PR for 20 minute FTP test.
Nothing impressive in the grand scheme of things but I'm just delighted still to be improving my fitness at age 57.

I used to bike 20 miles a few times a week, but got out of the habit...I like this group...let's see if I can get peddling again!!!1

First of four meso base period done (4 week blocks), this week being recovery. Think I got a nice bump of 10-15w. Thursday's ride.
Saturday's ride almost killed me.

I haven't ridden my bikes (indoor or outdoor ) for a couple of years. I want to start up again so thought this challenge would be a good way to start. I am a fair weather rider so will do primarily indoor cycling to start.1

I'm in.
Been a little sore, plus donated blood last week so lost a day there . Trying not to overdo it (as I always do) and get injured, so working on ramping back up. I cycled 355 miles in October, but in November I'm off to a slow start, so I'll shoot for 300 miles.

So I've totally stunk at keeping up with this thread. The weather took a turn here and we got snow and some bitter cold. They canceled the group night rides the last couple of weeks so I haven't been out since the 28th of October when we had a crazy warm spell. It was 80 on the 28th and 20 a week later.
I need to buy a trainer and get some new tires on my old bike but in the meantime I've been working out with a personal trainer for something different.
I don't have a goal for November but will try and keep up with everyone who is able to ride.
Fun pic for our last nice ride of the season. We saw a freakin' moose! It was crazy! This was as close as I wanted to get. We made a slightly different turn than we normally do at that spot luckily or we would have run right into him!

11/3 - 8 miles
11/6 - 17 miles
11/7 - 18 miles
11/8 - 23 miles
11/9 - 17 miles. First really cold day biking into a headwind this morning (20-ish degrees actual temp, felt like 5 degrees with the windchill). Still pretty windy out, but I'm hoping it keeps the same direction so it's at my back for the ride home. Definitely need to improve the windproofness of my bottom half. No significant snow as of yet, so I'm continuing to ride my new Waterford. Need to dig out my winter bike and make sure it still works. Debating whether to switch it from slicks to nobby tires or just wait and go straight to the studded.

Mixture of outdoor rides and indoor training on the Wattbike.
Doing a series of 20 minute FTP tests to measure a fitness baseline, planning on donating blood next week so will be interesting to see the impact of that and how long any impact lasts.
211, 217 and 208 watts recently so fairly consistent.

11/13 - 8 miles - got waylayed by a cold last Friday so took a few days off from riding when the temps were in the 20s. Misplaced my bike locker key card yesterday morning so I missed riding to work in really nice fall weather (upper 30s/lower 40s), but did manage to bike to a restaurant in the evening. The ride home was pretty amazing - it's a route I've taken hundreds of times but there was something about the temperature and the dark and the solitude (didn't pass any other bikes) that put me in a really good mental place.

Nov 4 - 7.9 km running (mostly) and walking (65 min) + 1.6 km rowing (10 min) ... I don't run often but I got into the zone!
Nov 5 - 12.6 km hiking (155 min) ... beautiful local hike!! Some photos below ...
Nov 6 - 2.6 km walking (30 min) + 10 flights of stairs (8 min)
Dental appointment Monday after work ... worst extraction I've ever had. Not the fault of this dentist - she was good. Fault of previous dentist and ... tooth root embedded in jaw bone + bad infection surrounding tooth. Had to cut my gum open and dig out the bone. Couldn't freeze me enough.
I am on cold liquids (ice cream, yogurt, Ensure) and not supposed to exercise for a couple days. She said not even walking but I did need to walk a little bit today (Nov 7).
Nov 7 - 0.7 km walking (8 min)
I'm back! That dental surgery really put a dent in my plans. I spent so much time sleeping on Nov 7, 8, and 9
Nov 8 - 1.6 km walking (20 min)
Nov 9 - 2.3 km walking (28 min)
Nov 10 - 4.2 km walking (52 min) + 12 flights of stairs (9 min)
Nov 11 - 5.5 km walking (68 min) + 13.9 km cycling (43 min)
The walking was between Open Homes in Hobart. Each year we're given the opportunity to explore buildings that we don't normally have access to. This has been going on for several years, and each year we pick a few places that we'd like to see. It's quite interesting!
The cycling was a test ride to see whether or not my jaw would hold up to the joins in the pavement on the Cycleway and other bumps. It did all right.
Nov 12 - 1.7 km walking (21 min) + 20.6 km cycling (65 min)
Nov 13 - 7.9 km walking (98 min) + 14 flights of stairs (11 min)
Nov 14 - 7.2 km walking (90 min) + 20 flights of stairs (16 min) ... part of this was a lovely walk to the Botanical Gardens at lunch in summer-like weather!
Nov 15 - 7.2 km walking (90 min) + 20 flights of stairs (16 min)
