vennetamara wrote: »Hi all,
I was just introduced to fitnesspal 10 days ago after attending a health fair and learning I am at high risk for prediabetes
just became menopausal a couple yrs ago and am sitting more on the job = less energy and difficult to fit in activity!
my eating habits are not terrible BUT after tracking for 10 days (which means I was even more conscious about being careful) I observe that I get too much fat and sodium and not enough protein, fiber and exercise.
I don't want to wait till i retire (1-3.5 yrs) to get healthy! but how to fit exercise in while working long days...
My ultimate goal is to lose 30-35 lbs but I would be happy w/ half that!
In the last 10 days I have not lost a pound!
Will check back in soon if you have any tips for me,

Welcome, Tammy. This is a good day to start healthier living. I started with baby steps---changing a little at a time. Start by eliminating some of the high sodium foods or adding some fiber to your diet. Find a way to be active during your lunch break at work. Schedule an hour for walking on the days you don't work. Read this thread every day to get ideas from others about what to do. And do not be discouraged. These changes take time.

I have been out of the loop since July. I had a death in the family and lost my job all in a short period of time. I just reached my one year anniversary of not smoking but am the heaviest I have ever been. I have been this heavy before as my 'before' pix show. My goals for Nov are starting over. 1-Track food. 2-Walk at least 30 mins a day on the treadmill. 3- I will try to reach 10,000 steps a day by the end of the month.4

Hello all! I am still here. Just trying to adjust my morning routine so that I can fit everything in with swimming in the mornings. I have been alternating walking on the treadmill with swimming (getting up at 5:00 every morning). Ideally, I would like to begin getting up a little earlier each day so I can fit in a walk and a swim. Anyway, am able to read in the morning, but by the time I have read, I have run out of time to post. Like today Oh well, hope to comment at my lunch hour (nap time for the kids). So many interesting things going on for all of you! ttfn kids are here and eating pancakes. KJ (Kelly)7

Has been a while since I was caught up on mail, but that’s what a no/ poor night of sleep will do.Woke up yesterday at 3 am......so of course sleep came early last night ........NO,...was awake till past 1am & awake at 3am...again.Time change is not my friend!
DH only has 2 Wks before OP surgery to take out a stent inserted during surgery.Hopefully it will go well.He was in his 70’s both (only) times in hospital .......has always had great health. His Mom was the same way......my parents too,no Drs or hospitals.Different Times, different ways for sure.A cold meant Vick’s....lol.
Put turkey drumsticks in the slow cooker last eve, will cook all day, then into freezer.Smells so good as it simmers. Will use the broth for gravy, stuffing & noodles.Just us,DD & SIL for Thanksgiving.I could live on the sides! So good ......
This will be our first “no gifts” for Christmas. The family is going on a cruise & we all agreed on no gifts.DH & I have decided to pass on the cruise.Just doesn’t interest us.....ole devil age kickin in.No place like home!
Janetr..know what you mean about a 2 nd Mom. Sis was 11 yrs younger,so both Sisters & bro were my babies.
Good, luck with selling your pretty ornaments.Gave most of mine to DDs & Grdaughter few yrs ago.
Sharon,Ooooh that had to be a pain in the foot! Feel better soon.
Heather, when our DD was born, she was the 1 st Grchild on my side & 1st that his parents were around......they had another one in diff state. All the Grparents,Great Grparents, aunts & uncles bought her more than a child could handle. At just turned 1,While I made breakfast she ignored gifts & loved the boxes.....all under foot of course.Funny how some things seem like just the other day.
Someone mentioned mental problems. The news makes me wonder why we don’t all
have problems.Maybe every generation feels like they no longer recognize this world.
As someone said, off my soap box. Going to have a bite to eat, then finish cleaning. Pat

Hi ladies.
Definitely been better. My hot flashes have ramped up from mildly intrusive to five alarm fires every hour or so. Very difficult and embarrassing now that I’m working again.
Would like to see the Dr again, but not only can’t we afford it, ( except the one go wellness exam per year the Dr. visits cost us 170 to 250 dollars on our “insurance”) and we can’t afford medication anyway - we pay full Costco prices for husbands two meds and their regular full price is cheaper than our “insurance” price.
Sorry. trying to remember to be grateful that we are not starving or homeless but quite frankly when I can’t sleep and feel so panicked and horrible so often (hot flashes) and can’t afford to do anything to get help I just want to scream.
Deep breath. Happy thoughts. The scale is moving in the right direction. My husband called me “skinny” (exaggeration of course, but indicative of how far I’ve come). My co-workers are lovely people. My cats are awesome! My husband is the best.
Sorry for complaining and venting.
So, I’ve had little to no impetus to take any photographs for months, I just don’t have the creative juices flowing so I really am impressed with the beautiful pottery and ornaments I see here!
Oops, I hear the trash haulers and I forgot to take out some chicken bones to the trash can so I better get cracking!

Barbie - I want to thank you for suggesting "experiences" for presents. It prompted me to buy a restaurant voucher as a present for my son and DDIL in Hove. The Ginger group has a posh restaurant, two pub restaurants and a country pub restaurant, as well as rooms, so they can pick their "experience". Another two presents crossed off the list. They normally go out somewhere once a week, so that's perfect.
I would buy an experience for the kids and would prefer to do so, but I don't want to put pressure on the parents. I will take advice from my DDIL. My preference, if they were short of money, would be to give them the cash to choose a great day out, but they are short of time, not money. :ohwell:
Bought Dover sole for our anniversary next week.

Terry: Thanks for your kind words.
Felicia: Have a good adventure with your DH.
Heather: I've been above my maintenance goal for a little while, too. I'm down three pounds today and closer to where I want to stay. I did it by skipping the alcohol and backing off on the leftover Halloween candy.
GettinfitInMN: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. :flowerforyou:
Ginger in TX: Walking is great exercise. WTG!
Allie & Langman: How about a picture of your new haircuts? Please--- (I got mine cut yesterday, too. Same cut as before--just doing maintenance.)
Patceoh: Our fridge is connected to the house water pipes so that it can make ice automatically and you can get water or ice-cubes from a dispenser on the outside of the door. :flowerforyou:
Tammy Adirondacks NY: Welcome! If you want to be successful you will need to count calories and move more. Patience is also a requirement because this is a slow process to get from where we are to where we want to be--and stay at goal. I recommend measuring portions using a food scale, measuring cups or dishers. Let MFP set your calorie goal and settle in. Several of us have been here for years. The support, advice and friendship here are amazing. :flowerforyou:
Rye: Sorry to hear the hot flashes are making problems for you. The good news is that they'll go away--eventually. I had hormone therapy for a little while but it was worse than the hot flashes so I quit. Read up on all the latest medical advice on the matter. I lost three aunties to breast cancer that was caused by their hormone therapy. This was many years ago and the hormone replacement doses were way too high back then. (((hugs)))
Heather: I like the idea of experiences for the grandchildren, too. You're right about experiences requiring the parent's time and that can be in very short supply. For now, things work best as gifts for my grandchildren because of their parent's workload. :ohwell:
I am grateful that my grandson is home again, but worried about the load of stress my daughter is carrying. Her DMIL is her best ally. Her DH is planning to go back to Colorado to work on the house there asap and won't be home for Thanksgiving according to the most recent information. It is a good/bad thing. If they sell the Colorado house they can buy one for themselves near where she works. He won't have to live in the same house with his dad and that may make a very big difference for the family. He needs to finish the upgrades in CO so the house will sell at a good price. We will just have to see how things go.

I hope things are settling down for you. I am sorry for your losses.
I had fun with third graders yesterday. I taught a lesson on crayfish. I learned beside showing their pincers they back up when threatened. Not a bad idea. If possible they go and hide too. Also not a bad idea depending on the circumstances.
Nice to have computer and phone back. We do have back up phones for emergencies. I have had the same Trac phone for fifteen years. It costs $25 a year for me. I only call out on it. It has saved me in grief in certain situations.

Home from my visit to IN and the parents. My son and I had a wonderful time visiting. My parents are truly aging and I felt/saw it for sure on this visit. It was fun watching my 27 yo son bonding with his 15 yo cousin as they discussed all things Heavy Metal, Gaming, Cartoon Network and other likes which the adults had no clue about. Was able to be comfortable in my eating choices and am so proud of myself for this ability to self-monitor. My weight stayed the same which is good.
Home for only a few days as Sunday I fly off to VA to spend 2 weeks with my daughter and get her moved into her first house. Tired just thinking about it. Will get to spend Thanksgiving with my older brother's side of the family which rarely happens and am so pleased about this. Will go shopping and have in the house all my "usual" foods since I'm going to be there for a longer period of time. I am looking forward to staying longer periods of time visiting in VA with Ros and extended family when she is in her house as there will be more comfortable space than any of her apartments.
Karen in VA we are looking forward to having you come over for a visit. She moves in Saturday after Thanksgiving so that week we will make up a time! Sound good?!
I'm really getting a hang of this solo flying business. I researched and got myself a really good backpack for carry on with easy access to my tablet, snacks, jacket etc. I also got myself a small cross body bag to hold just my phone, license, credit card some cash, my earplugs, gum and mints, lip balm and boarding passes. This is so I do not have to go in my backpack every time I needed one of these items. I just take my Dramamine and settle in for the ride. I've noticed from the first flight to the most recent one that my weight loss has allowed me to fit in those tiny seats much better.
That's all for now folks. Much to do in these couple of days before I leave again. The hubs and I realized that these 2 weeks will be the longest we've ever been apart. Thank goodness he is an independent man and can take care of himself. He will be fixing Thanksgiving dinner for himself and our son who will come up from Houston for a couple of days.
Thinking of y'all always and wishing the best in your lives.

Happy National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day!
I'd never heard of this old-fashioned cookie. Might have to make some to take for Thanksgiving visits. Recipe here: https://foodess.com/recipes/spiced-date-raisin-cookies-hermit-cookies/
Michele - I made cornbread muffins last night too! I've always made cornbread in the cast-iron skillet before, but it's kind of handy to have them pre-measured into single servings. They will go with the giant vat of chili Philip made over the weekend.
Tallee - My condolence about the death in your family and loss of your job. Sounds like you've set reasonable goals for moving forward.
Kelly - I kind of want to start swimming again, but I'm also lazy so I've been hesitant to make the commitment. The nearest pool that's open year-round is in the next town over. It's only about a 15-minute drive, but I know that can be enough to make me not do it. Back when I had a 24-hour pool five minutes from the house, I would eat lunch at my desk then take a break at 2 p.m. to swim before the after-school rush started. Lately, though, it's been hard to find time for a lunch break. I probably just need to convince myself that I can do it, then I'll make the time.
Pat - Loved your tale of your granddaughter playing with the boxes. I was the first grandchild, with four living grandparents and four great-grandparents, and they spoiled me rotten. One Christmas something got into me and every time anyone asked what I wanted I'd say, "A box of nothing." On Christmas morning, I received a beautifully wrapped box of nothing, wrapped in white tissue paper with colored flakes. To this day, that's one of the most memorable gifts I've ever received!
Margaret - There's nothing like having your computer and phone service down to make you realize how much you depend on them! Glad you are back online.
Welcome to our new arrivals!
I mentioned that Philip made chili over the weekend. It's a lovely treat, but I swear, that man... I'd shopped for his chili ingredients along with the stuff to make some healthy breakfast sandwiches. He wanted to make a double batch of chili so I bought two pounds of ground round and two pounds of pork sausage for the chili plus a pound of turkey breakfast sausage for the breakfast sandwiches. When I got back from the river house I discovered that he'd used all of the sausage and only one of the packages of ground round, leaving me with nothing to use for the breakfast sandwiches. I'd have thought it would be obvious when you have two sets of two and one odd package left over which ones were for the chili, but my beloved is kind of an absent-minded professor sometimes. Guess that's what I get for letting him in the kitchen when I'm not home!
Y'all tell me if you've ever heard of hermit cookies, OK? Sounds like it might be a regional thing.

My veggie chilli was a success! By accident I put more cocoa in it than I intended! Oooops! It came out lovely and deep tasting and will be perfect as an ingredient for the "make yourself" tacos I intend for the Friday night next week. The meat eaters will have the additional choice of Barbecoa Beef from skinnytaste.com, except I'm going to use chuck this time as the eye of round was a bit tough.
I'm enjoying my alcohol free beers. Some, though not all, are low calorie as well. I have been drinking too much lately, so I'm pleased to have something I enjoy. The one I had tonight was 26 calories!
I even did a bit of memoir today!

Hi ladies. I'm doing my best to stay focused and on track, but my life has been total chaos lately. Some of it is work...this is my busiest time of the year, but some is that I am starting to panic about DH leaving. We still don't have a date. How do they expect people to make travel and work arrangements with so little notice? UGH. Take care everyone. Meg from Omaha4

Yvonne I remember Hermit Cookies! And Snickerdoodles, too!
Growing up, we didn't have desserts and cookies at home very often, but when we went to a church or school function, someone would make cookies like these, plus Toll House and others...Yummy!

Did anyone else see the experiment they did on PBS where they took pasta (starch) and gave it to volunteers to see the effect on their blood sugar? They found when there was a big difference between freshly cooked, chilled, chilled and reheated. In the study chilled and reheated had the least effect on blood sugar, chilled helped too. Freshly cooked was the worst. They did not go into how they reheated it (stove vs. microwave. ) Food for thought. Excuse the pun.

been having crazy days at work.... crazy wind/rain. this morning on my way to the gym, realized i forgot my bike lock (took it home cuz it was starting to stick so kirby oiled it). kirby kept riding, i made a u-turn back. and i didn't have my glove liners or my rain pants (yes it was raining when i left). got to work found that i left that here.
yesterday, i TOTALLY forgot that i had to hurry up and get home cuz they gave kirby a late shift and he wouldn't b home b4 me so i had to hurry up and get home to let the dogs out. so i got lucky and a co-worker was able to take me to the bike locker and pickup my bike and take me home.
ughhhh.

Yvonne: You may need to write "Mine" on your next package of sausage in permanent magic marker.

Very punny! No need for you to be excused.
Yoga today went well but the cycling machine I got stuck with before yoga was "new and improved." I'll avoid it in the future. :grumble:

Hi all you gorgeous ladies,
Pat, Glad to hear the patient is doing well.
Michele in NC, I noticed that the colors were brighter. I had one done then the other so I could compare the before and after. I had been looking through a yellow haze. Amazing.
Janet, get plenty of sleep. When you are sleep deprived it screws up both your mind and body.
Joyce, what a nice lunch you had. Sounds like Jackie is a prize.
Sharon, I’ve had cortisone shots in my foot and the pain is unbearable. I had them in other places but the foot was the worst. You have a right to be tired, cranky and distinctly unfriendly! ((Hugs))
Heather, I had my binge day a few weeks ago. I looked forward to starting over too. Binges just do it for me like they used to. Happy Anniversary!
Lisa, enjoyed the blog. Wish I could write. It is truly a gift.
Karen, You hang in there girl. I know you can do it. ((Hugs))
Tammy, welcome. Glad you found us. I remember starting in May with MFP. The beginning was the hardest for me. Once you get into a routine it gets better. We all have our good and bad days, but I just try to plow right through the bad one and celebrate the good ones. I am prediabetes too and started at 237 lbs. I’m at 200 now. Everyone has to find what works for them. For me I can’t have any of the foods I would binge on in the house. If it is there it is almost painful trying to stay away. Also, I have to measure, measure, measure. I still haven’t started to exercise, but know that is the next step for me. I tried not to do everything at once but took little steps. I also gave myself permission to be imperfect. You can do it. WOOWHOO on the 1 lb. You are on your way.
Machka, great aerial view.
Pat, good thoughts sent your DH way for the stent removal.
Rye, I’d send ((Hugs)) for the hot flashes, but as we all know, a hug is the last thing we want when we are having a hot flash. LOL So I’m sending a an ((e-hug))
Tallee, ((Hugs))
Cheri, welcome back. Sounds like you had a really nice time in IN. Way to go not gaining any weight. Sound like a lot of traveling in your future.
Yvonne, hermit cookies sound familiar but I’m never made them.
Meg, it is understandable that you are starting to panic. It’s fear of the unknown and without a date that makes it harder. Hang in there. I’m sure you are doing the best you can do given the circumstances. ((Hugs))
Margaret, wish I had seen the PBS info on pasta. Very interesting.
Well as you might have seen, I’ve updated my picture. I can really tell the weight loss as it shows in my face. Also, someone asked for a picture of my haircut so it shows that too. LOL
Back to work.

Pip ~ Sorry you had problems this morning but glad your co-worker helped you get the bike home.1 -
Margaret - I saw a similar programme on our TV this year. Cooling and reheating makes it "resistant" starch and it takes longer to digest and affect the blood sugar. I posted the info on here and I think Lanette commented on it. Thanks for bringing it to our notice again. It would be especially useful for anyone who was diabetic or pre-diabetic and thought they shouldn't eat pasta. I rarely eat it nowdays as I find I manage my calories better on a low carb diet, but I do love it. When we were in Hove we had pasta twice at a "homemade" place and pizza once at a wood fired place. Definitely worth it!
My poor freezers are completely stuffed. The veggie chilli fits into the last corner! Help!
All this talk about hair cuts reminds me that I need to get mine trimmed and I can see my grey roots. I dye my hair myself, but I need a professional to cut it. I love my hairdresser I always get a "wet cut" as it's pointless styling mine with all the exercise I do. I will make an appointment tomorrow. Terry - you are transformed!
Meg - (((HUGS))) Hard times for you.

Rye, I take soy isoflavones to keep my hot flashes etc at bay. When I first started taking them, I took 3 per day, I'm down to 2 a day now. Not too expensive, and certainly worth a try!1

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Katla, that is great that your DH went to the boat with you. I do remember that it’s been a while. Are you still thinking about selling it or do you think there is a chance he will sail again? What wonderful news about your grandson. I hope he heals quickly.
Barbie, that’s wonderful that your eyes are in good shape. It has to be so hard to lose sight in advanced years.

Joyce, I watch the Good Doctor and just saw it today as we record it. It’s always an interesting show and I understand it has very high ratings.
Heather, the pic of Edie is sooo cute. I love that there is a child left in the world that will enjoy a box and their own imagination. Kudos to her parents!!!
Ginger, glad to hear you are walking again. Keep it up .
What is all this “Edited by Mods” that I keep seeing under posts????
Heather, “Happy Anniversary” on Monday. You two sound so well suited for each other. Have a wonderful day.
Tammy, welcome. You will find great support here and answers to most any questions. Come often and join right in.
Tallee, welcome back. Sorry for your losses. Come often and take one day at a time.
Rye, I just hate you are having such a hard time with the Big “M”. I had lots of hot flashes but they didn’t take me down, just heated me up. Lol Hang in there and do what you can as this too will change. ((((Hugs))))
Heather, if you want to give the Grands an experience, maybe you and your DH could include a note that you would accompany them to …….? Just an idea.
Cheri, I hope you don’t overdo while helping with the move. That is a lot of work.
Yvonne, I am laughing at the ground meat mixup. You could have made sliders for breakfast. Lol
Margaret, very interesting info on the pasta and blood sugar. Thanks.
Terry, nice haircut and great new pic.

Hello everyone! I want to come back...will you accept me? I know that with the holidays coming, I will need all the support and advice I can get. If I have any tidbits of help, I would be delighted to share. Getting through this sugary time without sinking into a chocolate fog is always a challenge.
I am still here in my little creative dungeon on the north Oregon coast. It is me and my husband and our labradoodle Katie here. I have scanned through this very active and positive site. You all seem so supportive and positive. I am finishing up a couple of children's books to kick out the door into the wild blue yonder. We will see where they land. Writing has one sit for long periods of time. Not really great for burning calories. Ah, that's the rub...as Shakespeare so aptly put it.
It is raining again...still!
