Some of the things I do include ... getting up and walking flights of stairs on my morning and afternoon breaks, walking as part of my commute to and from work, and going for a walk at lunch. It all adds up!
Then after work, my husband and I often walk or cycle and talk to each other ... it's our distraction-free daily debrief time. Like a mini-date.
I will also add that when I signed up with MFP, I stuck to my calorie limit (1250 cals) like glue. I weighed and logged every single thing I ate, and I only ate back 50% of my exercise calories. I was absolutely meticulous.
For the first 10 days ... I lost nothing. I was about ready to throw in the towel, but decided to stick with it for a total of 3 weeks and if I had lost nothing by that point, that would be that.
On Day 11, I started losing weight.

Hi ladies.
Definitely been better. My hot flashes have ramped up from mildly intrusive to five alarm fires every hour or so. Very difficult and embarrassing now that I’m working again.
Would like to see the Dr again, but not only can’t we afford it, ( except the one go wellness exam per year the Dr. visits cost us 170 to 250 dollars on our “insurance”) and we can’t afford medication anyway - we pay full Costco prices for husbands two meds and their regular full price is cheaper than our “insurance” price.
Sorry. trying to remember to be grateful that we are not starving or homeless but quite frankly when I can’t sleep and feel so panicked and horrible so often (hot flashes) and can’t afford to do anything to get help I just want to scream.
You can't do hormones, right? Neither can I.
So you might want to revisit alternative options.
Personally, I found that Evening Primrose Oil helped various symptoms a bit, possibly including the hot flashes a little bit.
Valerian helps calm me, settle me, and helps me sleep.
Magnesium, B12, and Ginkgo Biloba also seem to help keep me calmer and less agitated than when I don't take them. Plus it seems like if I'm feeling really scattered and unable to focus the Ginkgo Biloba seems to help.
Vit D and a B-complex might give me a bit more energy when I need it, or at least make me feel better about life.

When my hot flashes were really bad, I started taking Black Cohosh and after I was on it for about 6 weeks, the hot flashes went away. I stayed on it for a couple more weeks, then went off.
St John's Wort is another one that can apparently help too, although I haven't tried it.
There may be more as well, and there are heaps of suggestions on the internet. At times I feel like I might be taking too much, but I got blood test results back from my Dr recently and she checked all sorts of vitamin and mineral levels in my blood. Turns out everything is right in the middle of the normal range. Plus the report showed my last 3 blood tests ... and they're all right in the middle of normal.
Setting all these things aside, I've also found that making a quick dash to the toilet and running my wrists under cold water can help. And I've got a little USB powered fan on my desk which gets employed from time to time.
Dressing in layers helps a lot ... some days I feel like I'm constantly putting a jacket on, and taking it off, and putting it on, and ...
Also traditionally I've worn fairly high necked clothing ... my chest feels the cold quickly plus I've never thought of that part of me as particularly attractive. However, in the last year or so, I've added a number of scoop-neck tops into the mix because they seem cooler. I also often have a lightly scented spray-on antiperspirant on hand which can be good for keeping the great sweat patches at bay.
One way or the other, I hope you can find relief soon.

After 3 beautifully hot days ... it even got to 30C on one day ... today it is 13C and rainy.
When you live in Tasmania, you've really got to pay attention to the forecast when getting ready in the morning. Thank goodness I grabbed a fleece jacket to put on under my rain jacket.

Regarding Holidays ...
Thanksgiving isn't celebrated here in Australia, so there will be no big turkey dinners or anything like that for me.
Christmas, on the other hand, is celebrated. We get Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day off. They are statutory holidays. I'll also probably head home early on Friday the 22nd too ... as will 99% of my coworkers. In addition to that, my office is closed the 27 - 29th. So I will end up being off work from sometime mid-afternoon on the 22nd until the morning of Tuesday 2 January ... 10 days off.
Of course, my initial thought is always ... TRAVEL TIME! But unfortunately, that's my husband's busy season. He has to take Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day off (stats) but chances are he will be working 10-12 hour days the rest of the time.
So, I treat that time sort of like I'm at a fitness spa or something. I plunge into walking, cycling, weightlifting, etc.
I also get some extra sleep, get out in the sun, and try to get several projects done in the house. That's pretty much the only time of year I bake as well. I enjoy baking, but ... calories.
The next few week be preparing and building up to those 10 days.
As for gifts ... my husband and I don't exchange gifts. Most of whatever else we exchange are just token bits and pieces with certain family members. And probably the main gift I send out is for my nieces and nephew.
Last year, I contacted a place in their city on the other side of the world from me, and was able to purchases gift certificates so the kids could go there for a day. The year before I collected a small package of Australian-specific books and mailed them. The year before ... I think it was an Amazon gift certificate.
But I'm kind of running dry on ideas ... and they're getting older. Hmmm ... have to give it some thought.

Meg: I live near Englewood and have plenty of tea and sympathy. Just say when. I'm not travelling nearly as much as before, so even short notice works.
Don't know who mentioned turkey drumsticks in the slow cooker, but thanks for that great suggestion! I fast on Thanksgiving Day, but DH likes all the traditional foods, so I do cook and we both enjoy the leftovers.
Took DH to a new dermatologist today. Two years ago he had a massive melanoma dug out of his forehead via MOHS surgery....twice! Seems to have grown back. New dermatologist did a second type of biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. We'll know more in a week.
I have started to utilize a caregiver part-time to help with cooking, especially when I am out of town. The one we had has left the company, which is so disappointing. We LOVED her. Oh well. Tomorrow I get to orient a new person in preparation for coverage while I am in New York the first week in December.
Oh, and work has been inn-terrr-essting. We have a new 'chief' for our department. Very different personality from all of her predecessors. Time will tell how this will work out.

M, thanks! There are several you mentioned that I haven’t tried yet. Unfortunately nothing I have tried yet seem to have any effect. (Black Cohosh, evening primrose oil, magnesium, soy isoflavins and my favourite: daily tomato juice).
Until I started losing weight I had the hot flashes under control, I even thought (hoped) I was past them for 8 months or so. But losing weight seems to be a trigger in my body (not a surprise- I suppose, weight loss will effect hormones). The problem right now is the flashes that come with panic attacks. All of a sudden I’m drenched in sweat and panicked out of my mind. Well, the other problem is that for the past few weeks, I’m only getting 1/2 an hour to an hour of sleep between hot flashes.
So time to try some more home remedies and cross my fingers as hard as I can. I appreciate your list, it has some new stuff to try!

Patsy, glad to see you posting here again. I'm north of you on the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington with my darling husband, lovely dogs, Bessie and Sasha, and loving cat, Bernie. I am fortunate that we don't celebrate the holidays with food and I routinely say "no thank you" when offered food that's not on my food plan.
Meg, hugs to you during this trying time. This is a really good time to redouble your efforts to stay in the moment and just do what is right in front of you.

Rye, I hope you can find some relief for your hot flashes soon. No one understands the toil it takes on all parts of your life until you’ve had them. (((Hugs)))
One winter tradition DH and I have is homemade hot chocolate. DH will make it in the evenings with a slice of bread and butter. We dip the bread in the hot chocolate which melts the butter into the chocolate . Tonight was the first time this winter. Figured out the calories and was amazed. Guess I won’t be having that every night. Will have to have it as a treat. I didn’t even have the bread tonight to cut out some of the calories. Good thing I did well on calories throughout the day. Even having it I didn’t go over my 1200.
Every morning I get up and the first thing I do is weigh myself. Still have not hit below 200. Still at 200.2. Aagghh! So frustrating. On a good note, my boss (who I have shared my weight loss with at work) whispered to me today that she could really see the weight loss. Felt good to hear.
Well I guess that’s it for today. Supposed to be in the 20s tonight and snow. Hopefully not too much snow as my snow tires don’t go on until next Tuesday.

Well I did a stupid ing today. And the worst part is that I have done it before. It start d that I couldn't sleep last night. I think it was to much tea yesterday. I finally took one Benadryl around und 3 and got to sleep around 7 and woke up at 1, that is PM. So infixed a meal and took my medicine. After I set the pill keeper down I realized it was the bedtime pill keeper. Yes, I had taken my sleeping pill, my pain medicine and my Clonazapen. So around und 3 I kind of had no choice but to go to bed. I told Charlie to wake me up at 6:15 thinking that I might be able to make it to choir practice. But I knew there was so safe way I could drive. In fact here it is a little after 9 and I am in bed again. But I can't take my pain pill! I have my appointment with my doctor for the every 4 month pain contract and I will pee in a bottle. I don't want to risk having to much Narco in my system. Hope I can sleep.

barbie - I was surprsed, too, at who was eliminated at DWTS. Unfortunately, I had to watch it on the Internet, but I was still surprised. My girlfriend and her husband owned to company that makes the foil packets (like Combos come in). Every year for Christmas she would wrap the kids gifts in this type of paper, maybe it was the wrong shade or something. The kids loved the paper much more than the gift, it made a crinkly sound for months afterwards
Joyce - oh, our cats love to "help" us do anything. I bought this bracelet to give to Toys for Tots. I know they always say that they have so many toys for little kids but not much for older kids. I thought a girl like 12 or 13 might like getting a bracelet. I put it in a box but I needed to rubber band the box since with the tag, it was just a little too big. Maybe they'll take the cotton out of the bottom.
Heather - happy anniversary! When you cook the beans from dried in your IP, do they come out as soft as they are in a can?
Remember when I went for my BDT? Well, there was this posting on my Patient Portal (every doc seems to have one!) that I have osteopenia and not osteoporosis. First time in years! I've asked for a copy of the report and will compare it to next year's. I just find this hard to believe

Karen in VA - growing up I didn't have cookies, cake or pies for dessert, either. Dessert was usually a piece of fruit. Of course, we had cake for our birthdays, etc. but regularly we didn't have cakes for dessert. It wasn't until I started going out with Vince that I regularly had a sweet for dessert. Now I'd rather have a piece of fruit. He still wants his cakes, pies, cookies, etc.

DJ: DH went to the boat with me yesterday and helped to winterize it but he was not happy about it and claims he won't do it again. I'm seriously thinking about what to do with it, probably for the first time. I don't know what the decision will be. :sad:

You might try having a chat to a pharmacist too. That's how I learned about Valerian ... I went in and asked for something that was not a "sleeping pill" but was perhaps something that might help me relax at night and sleep through the night. She showed me Valerian and Melatonin, and said that after looking into the two, she tended to prefer the Valerian. She probably said why, but I can't remember.
I do, however, remember that she told me to take one right before bed, and to lie down and relax very soon after taking it. I guess some people have success with it, and some don't, but the ones who seem to have the most success lie down and relax right after taking it. If you're up and about finishing this and that for another hour or two, it probably won't have much effect.
It did seem to make a difference for me. I went from falling asleep quite quickly, but within about 45 minutes I would wake up, and then be awake for 2 or 3 hours, unable to fall asleep again ... to falling asleep quite quickly and then staying asleep! That made a huge difference to my energy level!
Also, I have read that a somewhat more vegetarian diet can help. This is based on the suggestion (fact??) that significantly fewer Asians suffer from hot flashes.
But a little anecdotal story ...
I was going along having a lot of hot flashes in the week leading up to my periods, but otherwise I was mostly all right ... just the occasional one.
Then in June, my husband and I went to Canada for a month. About halfway through that trip, I started having wicked hot flashes all the time ... just one after another after another, sometimes as long as an hour apart, sometimes only minutes apart. Hot, drenched, freezing. Hot, drenched, freezing. And about every 5th one, I'd be really nauseated and dizzy. This went on for the remaining 2.5 weeks ... and then for about 3 weeks after we got home.
And then they stopped.
Now what changed? When I start reading a bit about diet and this business of a somewhat more vegetarian diet vs a meat-heavy diet, it clicked.
My husband and I eat a diet that leans toward Vegetarian, or maybe sort of Mediterranean/Vegetarian ... the meat we eat is usually chicken or fish and we don't eat a lot of that. Otherwise it is mostly veggies, fruit, and grains with a little bit of dairy.
My parents, who we visited in Canada, on the other hand, tend to be quite heavy meat eaters plus their diet tends to have a rather high fat content. And when we were travelling around and eating in restaurants, we'd eat a bit more meat because it was a novel thing ... we don't normally eat like that.
So I'm wondering ... is there something to this diet thing? Who knows ... maybe.

The stitches are out!
I was really nervous going in, but it was quick, easy and painless.
My dentist says that the healing is coming along well. I can start adding more food to my diet, but still no sharp, pointy, hard food yet -- like toast, for example.
I can also return to whatever exercise I want. The jaw bone area is still, naturally, somewhat sore so I found that running is a bit jarring, but cycling and walking and even weightlifting should be fine.

Thanks NYKAREN, that is my experience too. I have to do my daily exercises or I can't eat anything and that is unsustainable for me. I do 100 minutes a day of intentional varied exercises including cardiovascular, yoga and weights. Even so I have recently put on 3 lbs, which I am applying myself to shed.
Managed to get a hair appointment for tomorrow for a trim.
Spoke to my cancer friend today on the phone for an hour. I'm going up to see her in London in a couple of weeks. I've got a lovely meditation bracelet to give her as the one she gave me was so helpful with my difficult friend. She has been looking at hospices. The thing she can't stand is that people speak to her in that "empathetic" tone of voice, with their heads to one side. And very slowly. She said, "I'm ill, but I'm not an idiot!" :laugh:

I read once, long ago, that ideally people should get at least 90 minutes of exercise a day. Not necessarily 90 minutes all at once ... it could be 15 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes at lunch, etc. etc. ... but adding up to 90 minutes.
So ... after reading that, I have usually made an attempt to get an average of 10.5 hours per week (which would be 90 minutes a day) of various exercise.
If I go into a period of time where I don't do that for one reason or another, I struggle to maintain my weight.1 -
Hey all! Went to bed early, got up early and got some walking in. Due to the darkness and not having a walking partner or a dog; I am on a treadmill. It works for now, I may have to make a couple more playlists to get me through winter, though.
NYKaren- Great article! I have found that making better food choices goes hand in hand with exercise. I can't make it work just doing one or the other; it has to be both, all of the time.
Rori-Thinking of you as you find some one to help you as you travel for work! So hard to lose some one who cooks/does things the way you like.
Machka- interesting info about hot flashes. Inadvertently, I guess I did the same as you did, as far as cutting out meat. I had read that soy helped some people with hot flashes, so I started eating more soy products. Lots of tofu, edamame, soy milks. IN doing so, I ate less meat. But the hot flashes went away. So did the night sweats.
Katla- Do you and DH both still enjoy your boating time? Is it just the winterizing that DH hates? Wondering if having some one do it for you is within your budget? If you have to sell, sell to someone you know and maybe you will still get a few boat outings in and they can take care of the boat!

Joyce- So sorry to hear about the pill confusion. I am beginning to go through pill issues with DH. I use a pill box to track my pills (so far just vitamins, allergy meds), but DH is resistant to using a pill box. He says it makes him feel old. He's in denial! He tries to track his pills on his computer, but he forgets to write them down. Geez, he even sits at the table with his pill bottle in front of him at dinner and then forgets to take the pill. He will ask "Did you see me take this pill?" I am usually busy fixing dinner or putting it on the table (or talking). I always tell him "Just because I didn't see you take it; doesn't mean you didn't take it!"
Cheri- Omigoodness, you are BUSY! Take time to breathe and good for you letting the kids know that cleaning up the empty apartment is their job as adults. I just recently went through the same thing with my oldest.
Marcelyn- Oooooh, your pottery is wonderful! I just love to see "naked" dishes.

Heather- Aren't kids fun to watch with boxes?! My daycare kids LOVE empty boxes and bins. They could play with them all day. DH and I decided that for Christmas for DD and her family this year, we are just bringing Joaquin some winter gear (it does get cold in TX) and for DD and her DH we will pay a months worth of daycare so that they have a little financial breathing space.
Cookies: I grew up with Snickerdoodles, oatmeal cookies, and shortbread cookies. All home made. Toll House cookie ingredients were too expensive for my mom. I remember as a kid I desperately wanted my mom to BUY cookies. Oreos, nabisco anything, Little Debbie anything...always home made. lol it made me feel poor. Now, I am a cookie snob and I don't like store-bought cookies. My DD loves any cookie, but my DYS is my food snob. He likes MY cookies, MY chicken, MY sandwiches. He is polite and eats food prepared by others when the occasion arises. But he always comes home and says "It wasn't as good as yours" Makes me happy; but I will have to talk to him about this before he gets serious with a girl. Those are not words conducive to a good relationship with motherinlaw/daughterinlaw.
I found out something interesting about hydration/water intake. My MIL has been in and out of the hospital lately. Many of her trips in have been instigated by dehydration. So...I talked to a nutritionist about "how to get her to drink more water and stay hydrated". Things I have learned: As we get older, we lose the ability to tell if we are thirsty or hungry; so we eat and drink less. Also, people who have mobility issues will sometimes choose not to drink anything because it will mean a trip to the bathroom, which can be hard for them. Coffee and soda as a diuretic, while true, will still hydrate you. If you are or have an elderly person who doesn't want to drink water; some other options are: coffee, soda, sparkling water, smoothies, shakes, Ensure type drinks, fresh fruit (apples, citrus, pears, plums, etc.), soups, fresh veggies, juices. I can not even tell you how much relief this info gave me. It is so hard to fight her on things like what she drinks. She drinks what and when she wants. But hopefully this will help.

On this ... I find that when I'm dehydrated, my joints ache, my muscles sometimes ache, and occasionally even my skin feels like it hurts. I also feel tired and "fuzzy". So for me, that's a good reason to drink a decent amount. Another reason is that I've had kidney stones since at least 2009, if not earlier. When I'm dehydrated, they bother me but when I'm hydrated I'm OK.
(An aside, I had one large one that got lodged in 2009 and had to be surgically removed. That and this recent dental surgery would be tied under the category, "Most painful experience").
Back to dehydration ... my mother lost the ability to determine when she is thirsty years ago, if she ever had that ability, and she doesn't like water. So she drinks a fraction of what I drink.
She also complains of aching joints, aching muscles, feeling sore in general all over, fatigue and feeling "fuzzy".
I keep hinting that she should try to drink a little bit more ... an extra glass of water or something. But ...
