Beautiful day for the Dirty Santa 5K with the family this morning. Windy and a bit hard to gauge proper attire. I decided to do a good warm up this time (1.3 mi) and I think it worked! Ended up too warm and going out too fast at the beginning but held out and won 1st in my age group with a 26 min time. Fastest 5K XC race in a long time (maybe since college?) (flat, windy, and grassy). The 9 year old hung in there too and finished just a minute and a half after me. Waiting for the awards to start was painfully cold--need to remember an extra jacket next time.
Goals this month: 90 miles, maintain weight, PT and yoga, add one day of weights per week, register for spring marathon or ultra
Day/Distance/Comments
Dec 1 Walk outside for about 30 min (rest before race)
Dec 2 Jackson 50/50 10 mile “Fun Run” 4th female finisher in this crazy steep trail race (10.2 mi total)
Dec 3 3.4 mi slow recovery run, PT
Dec 4 Water walking + PT
Dec 5 3.3 mi
Dec 6 Rest day (unintentional!)
Dec 7 3.1 mi + PT
Dec 8 Water walking
Dec 9 5.5 mi + yoga + some PT
Dec 10 12 mi + Gymnastic Bodies stretching routine + PT
Dec 11 Water walking + PT
Dec 12 5.1 mi + PT
Dec 13 3.1 mi + PT
Dec 14 4.8 mi + PT

@rheddmobile - wow that is an incredible story. Amazing that you are running so far now and what you went through!
@hjeppley - Awesome for you and the 9 year old! 1st in age group!!!
So... if any of you are doing a long road trip I recommend the crazy thing I did today! I drove from Orlando (home) to just outside DC area (approx 13 hours normal drive). I decided I would run 1 mile in GA, SC, NC and VA. I had to throw out the VA run because it was dark and the 1 mile run stops took a lot longer than I thought they would. I figured -- 10 min miles... and that it would take 10 mins. Ummmm.. no. The first stop was more like 45 mins because I had to change, organize everything (HRM, figure out where to park, etc.). And I moved my car after the first spot, because it felt sketchy leaving it with obviously everything in it... as I set out to run.
In GA I stopped at a gas station and just ran down the road 1/2 mile out and back. When I got back to the car I felt AMAZING! Runner's high after one mile? No, but just felt so great.
Then, in South Carolina I stopped at a rest stop which was much smaller than I thought it would be. I had to run some crazy twists to get a mile in. I felt like an idiot and almost asked some people "does your dog need running?" I mean, I don't really care anymore (after 50, you basically don't give an f what people think anymore ... am I right?) But, still, I am sure people probably were commenting that I must have been anorexic or an exercise freak. Again, who cares. So I get back in the car and felt AMAZING again. That stop was probably 30 mins.
In North Carolina I had trouble figuring out where to stop and I really debated skipping it because I could see that these 1 miles were taking way longer than I had anticipated. When I needed gas I saw a Cracker Barrel so parked in front of it and then went in to change, before and after. That run was really weird -- down a sketchy road behind the restaurant, and then through a truck sales lot where I was surprised to see there was a band playing for some sale they were having! This stop was the quickest ... maybe 20 mins. Again, got back in the car and felt AMAZING.
Of course, I arrived at my moms 2 hours later than I had expected, hungry, with a full load of laundry. She's used to me coming here and doing laundry every day, but not arriving with a full load, LOL.
I usually have such a sore driving leg by the time I get to her house when I drive straight through but the running really helped! I don't think this would be do-able in the summer, when I usually visit. I'd have to shower each time. In this 40-45 degree weather, I had to change, and would have liked to shower, but I wasn't drenched in sweat. I will have to think about it, because it was really fun.
I'm not telling anyone but y'all (and whomever sees it on Strava), because it just sounds crazy, lol.
When I drive home next Saturday my daughter will be with me... and I hope to do it all again! LOL I will have a routine down this time though! And her BF will be with us so at least he can watch the car. That was what I hated ... my purse, laptop, EVERYTHING, was in the car and anyone could just watch me run away from it. I always parked in busy areas, but it just takes a second for someone to walk up with a brick and smash the window. Saw that happen once at the high school where I teach. I had my stuff hidden, but still, it's pretty obvious when I run away with nothing in my hands...
Tomorrow I sleep in (I HOPE AND PRAY! -- I keep waking up between 2-3 and can't sleep!) and then I will run ... however far I feel like and I need to keep a slow pace. This cool weather just makes me go fast!

I have been eating all the things and avoiding all the running because it's been so icy but today I finally decided enough is enough and went out and ran. Thinking maybe the lack of daylight hours is getting to me too so I'm going to start taking vitamin D again and set my lights to a natural wavelength during the day and see if that helps. Sunrise and sunset were only 7.5 hours apart today.

@MobyCarp , @MNLittleFinn , @JessicaMcB For me it's more of a reflection of what Non-Runners think of Runners who get outside under all types of conditions. And it's humourous.
@skippygirlsmom Smart Phone. If you or anyone you know is in an accident / Pictures and more pictures. Do a 360 walk - around starting on a rear or front corner capturing license plates and vehicle positions. 8 overlapping pics minimum. Capture pictures of the other drivers documentation - Insurance and Front and Rear of their drivers license, there might be special restrictions on the other driver - glasses, no night driving etc.
@sarahthes Feeling you on the 7.5 hrs of daylight. We are even less than that. At least the days aren't getting noticeably shorter now.
My brother unexpectedly dropped in this morning - I was fully kitted out for a run and he says lets go for breakfast - hard to say no when he standing at the door. So that meant no long run today with everything else that was on my schedule ( repair garage door, replace gyp rock in garage, garage electrical wiring, assist at swimming pool with swim club meet and prep for 5K Santa Shuffle tomorrow ). The irony is this week we have had the PineApple Express ( from Hawaii ) roar through the area = +3 > +9 Celsius and a very mild SW wind, blue sky so would have been a perfect day for a long run. So we have actually been warmer than so many of you further south - unfortunately it came with freezing rain - not hail - rain that froze on contact with the cold ground/roads/sidewalks. Roads/sidewalks were treacherous in the morning. According to my neighbor the Bush trails were ? interesting/crunchy but dangerous on South slopes that had max Freeze/Thaw cycle = down hill skating rink even with ice cleats.0 -
still on pace2
-
Finally got a run in again With the snow and ice early in the week it was simply too dangerous to run in the (dark) evenings. Yesterday the tree won over the run So I got out today - Not too bad after a full week no runs Did 6km in glorious wintersun coming up.
Still a bit slippery at the bridges, but it was quite doable Could feel my legs not being in full running mode so I took it easy But I loved my run really loved it.
3 -
@ddmom0811 great story. Think your daughter will run with you?0
-
@ddmom0811 That sounds like fun! We might have to try that--my 9 year old would probably love that. On the 25th and 26th we are driving from Indiana to NY, so if we did it, that would be IN, OH, and WV on the first day and WV, PA, NJ, and NY on the second (there is actually a nice paved trail near the hotel in WV).
Congrats to @cameronheel on the AG win!
@sarahthes Even here much further south the lack of daylight is getting to me. I've been taking vitamin D and trying to get outside in the sun as much as possible!1 -
It rained early today. Hoping it does so again later so I can run in it. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've seen rain. Probably our trip to NYC actually LOL
@sarahthes @hjeppley I take a 5,000 vitamin D every day (or rather every day I remember to take my pills). I am always low when tested. I also try to get outside as much as I can but it's so hard this time of year.0 -

Today's notes: My 2 hour run was slow this morning. After working harder than I thought I'd need to yesterday, my legs just didn't have the bounce for a faster run. Got in 8.1 miles for an average pace of 14:46.... Blah, slow. The snow today was like running on soft sand, but with the added bonus of ice underneath a bunch of it. Fell twice due to slipping and had a couple close calls. Average HR was 154, which put the average just barely in z2... spent 59% of the time in z3 though, so it was a tougher run, but not as tough as my legs thought it was.... lungs were OK with it, but legs didn't have the bounce. Might Email my coach about that, I seem to lose strength before I really feel my cardio go....
on another note, I have 30 miles to go for my monthly goal and 60 miles to go to make 1800 for the year. With 10 runs left, I'm starting to feel that both are within my grasp.
Have a Runderful day everyone!

Not even sure how many miles I actually got in this morning. Lol. I had just hit 5 miles and I decided to open up my maps app to see about taking different routes back home when my phone died. My music is what pumps me up and keeps me going. Ugh, talk about a motivation killer. Lol.1

you can get used to running w/o music. When I was training for my first HM, I hit a rainy day where my headphones stopped working and I ran the last 5 of the training run with no music, decided that was cool and haven't used music since....
...Might have to in my April race though, that one's a bit longer.0 -
Actually before I joined this group I ran without music but i also just ran to make sure that i got in all my steps for the day.
Music helps me to keep a steady pace plus it helps to block out all the distractions in my mind.
Plus I know I look happier running singing along then just running alone.0 -
Went out with not a lot of direction with the intention of doing a 14 mi long run. Ended up doing some serious exploring. Little bit of everything: single track, paved golf course trail (not sure I was supposed to be there), county roads, subdivisions, paved park path, single track, grass, paved park path, and finally some single track to finish it up. By the end my legs were really feeling it and the final single track hills (small) were kind of shuffle-y. But I did it. Longest long run in 1.5 years. Hamstrings are ouchy and injured foot/ankle is a bit ouchy but not much more than usual--not so bad given the race on grass yesterday too.

I went to a class at the gym yesterday morning while waiting on the temperature to improve. It involved lots of squats, wall sits, cardio, etc. I really felt it when I tried to run afterwards. I did 5.6 miles but they were so slow. This morning was better. Met some friends and ran 7.7 miles before church. What a difference a day makes!2

Anyone want to play armchair internet doctor? I have been having pretty bad pain on the outside of my foot during my last 2 runs. I had to cut my 12 mile "run" short this morning because it became more like a slow hobble. It is currently very swollen right underneath the round little knobby ankle bone that sticks out. Painful to touch and walk on.

@rheddmobile - I am so glad you got help in time! Wow what a terrible experience. Like @Elise4270 I had an ovarian cyst that they thought was an appendicitis. I too was in pain for a few days before they decided to do surgery and found it had ruptured and I was bleeding internally. That is nothing to what you experienced - I just can't imagine!
@jessicaMcb - I'm assuming it must be an indoor pool party? Hope the fire was put out quickly!
@Orphia - I hate swallowing bugs! Hate it more when they get caught in my gum though.. YUCK!
@hjeppley - Awesome job on the 5k and a 1st place! Congratulations!!
@ddmom0811 - I should have done that on my drive home from San Diego after the HM, assuming I could have run at all I did stop at a rest stop to use the bathroom - would have been a perfect opportunity except I could barely walk to the bathroom let alone run!
@skippygirlsmom - I agree with @juliet3455 on the phone pictures. It is also what our insurance agent has told us. In CA the insurance companies handle all the negotiations, discussions with the other insurance and you do not have to talk to them. In fact they tell you not to talk to the other insurance or driver at all afterwards. My daughter was also hit by a driver who was turning across traffic. Fortunately she took pictures with her phone. The other driver's insurance contacted her directly and was trying to coerce her to settle without a claim or police report. She did the right thing and refused to talk to them but eventually had to block their number as they kept calling her. She kept all the messages they left and gave them all to her insurance who filed a complaint against the other insurance company/agent. Between the pictures and the agents behavior they didn't have a chance but someone else could have been completely intimidated by them.
@amymoreorless - I would go see a doctor and make sure there is nothing serious going on there like a stress fracture or something.
So I made it through the HM yesterday and didn't get sick and got my 5 year legacy jacket (it is an awesome running jacket too). I heard from @mom3over40 who I met at the same race last year with her husband. They ran again this year with a group of friends and mostly 1st time racers including their oldest son. I also ran into a friend that I hadn't seen in about 15 years. She called out my name when I went by her on a switchback toward the end of the race. She apparently was only running because her sister convinced her it would be fun (she walks a lot like 5-6 miles so she is in shape). We had fun talking and running those last few miles and getting all caught up. It really helped me get through those last miles and finish better than I thought I could - I think I might have just walked it in if it weren't for her. The weather was really great, in the 40s to start and warmed into the low 60's, if even that, at the end. It was mostly overcast and we even got a few sprinkles of rain which surprised everyone because it was so totally unexpected. Because I wasn't feeling great I really didn't fuel well before during or after and looking at my race supplies this morning made realize how poorly I fueled before, during and after. I am amazed that I finished as well as I did even though it was almost 30 minutes over my best time on that course.
For the first time after a race I feel terrible, hit by a bus terrible... everything hurts. My daughter says it is because I didn't eat after the race. I don't know if that is why but for sure I have never felt like this after a HM. I usually go for a recovery run the next day and there is no way I could today. I even canceled on taking Hobbes the Vizsla to an agility trial this morning because I knew I couldn't run or get up early enough to go...6 -
@Shanaber it could be your lack of proper fueling. But my guess is that it is simply pushed too hard given your current level of fitness. But I am no doctor and I just make random posts on MFP making people think I am smart.2
-
This is the most pain-free mileage I've done in a few months. Now I'm off for a massage!

Weekly update On December goal of 140 (~4.5/Day Avg) with a stretch of 170 (~5.5/Day Avg).
Week 1 of 12/1 to 12/3 : 26
Week 2 : 48
Week 3 : 40 (total to date 114)
Tomorrow is my 1 yr runiversary. Did much, much more than I ever expected in starting C25k back then and looking forward to 2018.
Good running to all and Happy Holidays!4 -
12/2 3.50
12/6 2.50
12/9 2.05
12/10 4.00
12/16 4.35
12/17 3.20
Total 19.60/40
My goal today was 3 with a hope to hit 5k. Ended at 3.2 surprisingly because I had to change up my route mid-run. I usually run through our green areas to help with elevation (Don't laugh, it's all I got) but when I went to go into the last one there was a stray dog. No collar, no humans. So I slowed to a walk and decided to stay on the streets and do a slightly different route. I love dogs but when I see dogs off leash I tend to be careful.
@shanaber Ohhhh, I like all the swag! It looks nice. Congrats on finishing yesterday!1 -
@PastorVincent - I'm not sure if she will do it with me. She is usually up for running whenever I do. Last year when we took a trip together to London and Paris we ran almost every day. But this is a little bizarre to say the least, and then have to change, etc. So not sure she will be up for it.
I am running for my streak so I will do at least one mile! She's not doing a streak but is training for her next marathon. Also... I don't think we will get as early as a start - I left at 5am from Florida. We probably won't hit the road until 7-8am I would think. But there are 3 drivers so maybe it will be easier.
@HonuNui -- the only time I had trouble starting was the 3rd run, but then afterwards I felt so great it was worth it.
@hjeppley - It would be nice but if you have other people in the car, I doubt if they would like it! If my husband was with me, he would be extremely impatient and it wouldn't even be worth doing it. When he takes a road trip, instead of it being a relaxing thing it's like we are in some type of race -- like The Amazing Race or something. I get scared/mad and just don't watch.
@shanaber - yeah, you definitely couldn't have done that after the HM! Great job running that!!! LOVE the jacket and other bling!!!
When I woke up it was 27!!! I didn't think I could run in that temp so I waited until it warmed up a little bit - 34 and I was fine...in fact, had on too much stuff! Had to take off jacket.
I didn't run slow as I meant to. I guess in this weather I just can't slow down. So tomorrow setting out early and will attempt to go slower. Thinking of a longer run tomorrow depending upon how I feel.
I'm sad there are only 15 days left of streak, because that means that the next day I am back at school.

@ddmom0811 - Wow. I am in awe of your logistical prowess, being able to break up a drive with one mile runs. I could maybe manage to break it up with one mile walks, but running? No way.amymoreorless wrote: »12/1 = 4 miles
@amymoreorless - That sounds like some kind of sprain or strain of a tendon in the ankle. It's not in same place as any of the ankle pain I've had, so I don't know which one; but it's the kind of thing that I'd take into my podiatrist to find out what it is and what kind of stretches or support I need to help it get better. I find anatomy to be a painful subject; I tend to learn it when I get hurt.
On the opposite side, I'd say posterior tibial tendon. I am painfully aware of what that feels like when I roll an ankle or develop a repetitive motion injury. FWIW, I've found that getting better from acute ankle injury (i.e., rolled ankle) the even surface of a road is better than the uneven surface of trail or cross country; but when recovering from a repetitive motion injury (i.e., posterior tibial tendinitis) the soft surface of cross country or trail is better than the hard surface of a road. I was kind of surprised that the uneven cross country surface didn't particularly bother my ankle when I was recovering from PTT.

Two days after seeing the sports doc, I'm not feeling the pain in my vastus lateralis. Instead, I feel something right where the quads join whatever it is at the top of the knee, and more from the other quad muscles than the vastus lateralis. I'll talk to the doc tomorrow to try to figure out what it means.
Yesterday I volunteered as a road marshal for the Reindeer Run 5K. Started out at 27º F, and dropped to 25º F while I was outside. (-3º C to -4º C). It was nice running weather, but I was standing around. For a long time. I might have been outside for 35 minutes if I'd been running, between the pre-race wait, running the race, and walking around a bit before heading inside. As a road marshal, I was outside for about 2 hours. And I was standing around instead of running. I did okay with coat and hat, should have worn one more layer of gloves, and made a really poor choice of footwear. Might have got a mild case of hypothermia, and certainly my feet got really, really cold. And it seemed like it took forever for the last walkers to get past my position. Then I could take off and walk back to base, easily passing clumps of walkers who had passed my road marshal position.
Doing better today, after feeling a bit dicey all day yesterday; but I was careful to stay warm and get lots of sleep.
Note to self: If I'm going to be a road marshal in the winter, warm boots are more important than something I can walk well in.

@PastorVincent thanks for the Dick’s sporting goods app tip! I wish I would have known sooner! I’m all about free stuff especially when I don’t have to do anything extra to get it!0
