i know it's not your problem but i'm just so fascinated by how this could have worked in the original person's mind.

The resistant starch is known to happen with pasta and rice. I don't recall seeing evidence that it happened with potatoes. The process is to cook it then refrigerate it for 12 hours to accomplish the conversion. Eating and thus warming it to body temp does not un-convert the resistance.
The bacteria in the large intestine digest and consume the resistant starches which you failed to digest.
I'm not informed of how bacteria respond to having a big old meal of resistant starch.
They are happy bacteria. And if this is a dramatic change in your eating habits, you might have too few bacteria each eating too much delicious bacteria food, such that they are overfed and start micro-tooting, thus giving you more-than-usual intestinal gas. Seriously.
Right - you're the one who posted about the micro-toots the other day! I was bloaty this morning when I got up, and visions of tiny bacteria farting away in my gut were making my head explode. Thanks a lot!6 -

I think the only thing to take away from this is eat a whole pie and lose weight.6 -
You can't lose weight if you eat more than 45 grams of sugar a day (both natural and added). You can't lose weight if you eat bread, rice .........and so many other carbs. Bananas and mangos will prevent weight loss. I have been doing it all wrong but must be the exception because I eat all of the above.0

Apparently we need to eat pieces of pie in even-number increments. Piece one, retain calories; piece two, release calories. So whatever you do, have another slice of pie!3 -

I always thought this might work for a while because of all the rules and being afraid to eat anything because you're afraid you'll break the rules.
Also pretty much rules out fast food, except maybe salad, but have to be careful of that, too, because of meat and croutons.0 -

It doesn't have to *stay cold* in your body. The act of chilling it is what converts some of the starch to resistant starch even if the food is later reheated or if it reaches the temperature of your body while it is being digested.0 -

This also supports the idea that eating potatoes cold with a vinegar-based dressing (i.e., German potato salad, yum!) probably is better if you have insulin issues than many other ways of consuming potatoes.
That said, I've always chilled cooked potatoes and rice often, since I tend to make enough for leftovers. For the record, it did not prevent me from getting fat. So I'm one who won't be pre-chilling all my starches or thinking "yay, pre-chilled potatoes, I can go wild and eat more." If it's a calorie bonus, great.
I eat most of my potatoes, pasta, and rice cold (because I cook in batches, save the leftovers, and don't heat them up) and whatever the calorie difference may be it has never been enough to make a difference I could notice in my long-term results (and I eat a fair amount of all three foods).1 -

yep, this is me!...and why I don't eat anything 2-3 hours before going to bed--I just don't get a good night's sleep if I do and not eating 2-3 hours before bed has eliminated the acid reflux problems I had for years, so now I'm just use to not even thinking about eating late at night.0 -

A friend of mine worked at a coffeehouse during college (not Starbucks), and told me about all of the crazy things some people wanted when they ordered.
One woman was very particular about having her muffin warmed up, saying that "the calories won't count" if the muffin was warmed up. My friend was studying nutrition and knew this was wrong, so she politely told the woman that wasn't true. The lady lost her senses and insisted that it was. My friend dropped it, popped the muffin in the microwave, and that was that.1 -

The issue with eating late and weight gain is that people who are eating late are often eating *more* than they need. The article itself references it as a problem with overeating (because people are waiting until they're too hungry and they eat more). I'm not aware of any evidence that shows that people who eat 2-3 hours before bedtime are hindering their weight loss when overall calorie consumption is accounted for. The study referenced in the article you're sharing is a study of when *lunch* was consumed, so it isn't even looking at the 2-3 hours before bedtime that you claim are critical. What studies are you referring to?6 -
I don't eat a few hours before going to bed, but that is because my husband reports that if I do eat close to bedtime, I toss and turn like crazy in my sleep, thus interfering with his. He keeps a close eye on me to make sure I don't! It does help keep me from going over my calorie goal!2

I don't eat past 7pm usually but that's because if I do, I wake up in the morning with horrible bloating and cramps, and it sits there for hours before the gas starts releasing, and that's not pleasant to have happen at work0

Well, diet soda doesn't cause weight gain but for me, it's definitely a gateway drug. . . It also gives me a sweets craving almost instantly. Like I said, gateway drug.
Same here. I eliminated diet soda since it always, always, Always triggers my appetite. I drink water instead and get very few cravings. It must be working since I've lost almost 50 pounds in 15 weeks.0 -

Your article does not support that conclusion.
It sites one study that shows a positive correlation between eating within 3 hours of bedtime and acid reflux, but that on average a group of people might have a statistically significant increased risk of developing something -- and I would not conclude even that from ONE study -- does not mean that it's an issue for everyone. Instead, it's consistent with what everyone else said, that it could be an issue for some people.
The other study discussed (and again you can't use just one study and think it proves anything) merely indicates that people who ate their biggest meal after 3 pm had more issues. This doesn't mean meal timing CAUSES the issue, but could be a difference between the people (and eating close to bed is a different thing than eating your biggest meal after 3 pm, although I'm sure there's some overlap).1 -

I had a friend do the hcg diet. 500 calories a day, very few carbs, only veggies, take hcg. I did a walk/run 5k with her and she collapsed at the end and insisted it wasn’t because of the diet. Needless to say she’s still overweight.0
