Between me and the baby-on-board it averages to 7:30 per mile. The first mile felt awkward but after that I hit my stride and it felt good. A little challenging, but I felt I could do a bit more.
Jan 2: 3 miles
Jan total: 3
Jan goal 30 miles
Great job getting HM training going! I LOL'ed at the baby on board comment. So awesome!3 -
I just finished reading through the December thread. Since no one is around that thread I'll post my December wrap up here.
I finished the year with a beautiful sunny 8 mile run Saturday, a full week after my previous run. I used my knee as an excuse not to run through the Christmas holiday. With all three kids at home I really didn't need an excuse though.
The air temp Saturday was -12F / -24C but with the brisk wind it was -31F / -35C wind chill, and that's the number that matters. It had been a long time since I ran in such low temps and I ended up over dressing (details below, if you care). My plan was 5 miles. I dropped Kody off at 5 but my knee was feeling better than expected so I ran another 3 on my own. I shouldn't have. My IT band started barking the last two miles and it continued to hurt the rest of the da
I finished the month with a paltry 40 miles, about 100 less than my original training plan.
thin sleeveless shirt - I wanted an extra layer over my belly, but didn't want the extra bulk on my arms
thin long sleeve shirt
midweight 1/4 zip Brooks running shirt
midweight fleece jacket - probably could have skipped this or gone with another lightweight layer instead
lightweight running jacket to cut the wind
Saucony wind briefs - first time wearing these. They are awesome!! The wind panel protected what they were supposed to protect.
Midweight SmartWool PhD running tights
lightweight Brooks running pants
Dry-Max cold weather socks under duct-taped shoes
fleece neck gaitor - too heavy
UA cold gear balaclava - LOVE this! My son gave this to me for Christmas. Amazing product!
Nathan mid-weight running hat - took this off after 5 miles
Head heavyweight running gloves - Love these gloves for cold weather. they have wind block panels on the back which make a huge difference.

Happy New Year, all!
Longtime lurker and periodic poster returning to the discussion after a few months' hiatus while adjusting to a new work schedule. I began running last year as a "New Year's Resolutioner" and am still at it, so I guess it stuck. And I'm 30lbs lighter, to boot!

My first 4,2km of the year. Not very happy as my it seems my Forerunner and I had a communication issue and I only found out it had not started at just after the 1km point Thankfully it was a well known course I was running so I can add it all up. This was not helped by open bridges plus rain and wind . All in all the best thing about it is that I did it

2017 wrap up
I finished the year with 1207 miles, just 13 miles more than 2016 and nearly 300 miles less than my goal. The two biggest factors in failing to reach my goal are sailing and injury. I wanted to run 100 miles per month throughout the summer but averaged just 55 miles per month through the sailing season. Weekends spent sailing put a big crimp on my long runs but I'm more than okay with trading running for nautical miles. The other factor I'm not okay with, a calf muscle strain in October and continuing IT band issues starting in late November.
Enough with the lowlights, on to the highlights:- Overall Increase in miles for the year.
- Several PRs: (Road HM - 1:51:40, Trail HM - 2:08, Trail 10K - 55:51)
- Kody's first 5K (25:49)
- First Parkrun
- First virtual race - AIM at Melanoma 5K (Kody's first race and my first Parkrun)
- First major trail race - Zumbro 17 Mile, finishing in 3:10, good for 112th out of 425, 10th out of 56 in Grand Master Males
- First ultramarathon - Chippewa 50K, finishing in 6:23, good for 76th out of 174 overall, 10th out of 32 in my age group
Here are my runs of 2017:

On to 2018!
First run of the year was yesterday. My IT band had settled down and with no wind last night, it was downright balmy compared to my Saturday run. Though my IT band felt pretty good after 5, I was smart and Kody & I quit when we were supposed to. For that I was rewarded with a pain free night and today is also pain free. I went from discouraged Saturday to fairly optimistic yesterday. I really would love to run tonight but know I need to take the day off for recovery or I'll regret it.
Though the run was warmer, it was still plenty cold for ice beards. Kody even had an ice beard though I didn't notice until we were inside and by the time I got my phone out and camera app open it was too late.

MTD - 9km/??? Still not sure what my goal is this month.4 -
1/1 - 5.0 km
1/2 - 5.1 km
10.1/80 km
-1C, no wind, blue skies. It was a beautiful afternoon for a run and I kind of didn't want to stop! Interesting how a change in conditions can change performance so much. Strava says I did 5K in 36:39 which is way faster than yesterday's race! (And 2 full minutes faster than my official time at Edmonton Marathon back in August.)
I am contemplating a mid-February 5K but I'm broke right now. Will reassess in a week or two if it's not sold out by then.
Upcoming Races:
1/1/18 Resolution Run 5K ~38:00 (no official times)
3/4/18 MEC Road Race #1 10K
4/7/18 Jasper Half Marathon
4/22/18 MEC Trail Race #1 5K
5/20/18 MEC Trail Race #2 10K
6/24/18 MEC Trail Race #3 15K
8/18/18 Edmonton Marathon 10K
9/2/18 MEC Trail Race #4 10K
10/7/18 MEC Trail Race #5 15K7 -

Also I plan to complete to 2018 You Vs The Year Challenge, So I better get back into this. Surprisingly I haven't lost much of what I built being lazy, lol

@eponine1984 congratulations! Exciting news!!
@garygse good to see you getting in some miles!
@skippygirlsmom great job getting out in the cold with Skip!
@ddmom0811 nice job streaking!
@sarahthes nice looking family, and well done one the race.
@PastorVincent have you tried taping up the outside of your shoes with duct tape when it gets cold? It makes a big difference and the tape easily comes off after the run. Last night I forgot to tape my shoes and only got a quarter of a mile out before I had to come back and tape them up. Running shoes are designed for air flow, which you don't want when it's cold out.
@GrayduckMN welcome! As a Minnesotan, I LOVE your username.
@NikolaosKey I hope you get back on track in 2018!
@karllundy two flats, what are the odds? Sorry to hear about it. My wife's truck was shut down due to a failed ignition coil but that only took about 5 minutes to replace.
