Less alcohol- January 2018- one day at a time

Well, this is Day 7, but it's 2:35 a.m. and I have not been able to get to sleep. In the past, good sleep has been a great perk of abstaining from alcohol. This time, for some weird reason, my brain will not turn off. I've finally given up, gotten out of bed, read posts here, and will now do the Sunday NYT crossword on my computer. Any hints or advice would be MOST welcome. I'm drinking herbal tea at bedtime, but you can't know how tempting it is to knock myself out with wine when I lie in bed from 11:30 to 2:30 without sleep. Well, I guess most of you can know. I am celebrating 7 days, but this sleep stuff has got to get fixed! I'm kind of afraid to take melatonin or anything else because I tend to have paradoxical reactions to stuff. For example, I once took Nyquil and was up literally all night. Didn't sleep one minute and had to go teach the next morning. Never again. I mentioned in an earlier post that I do have a prescription for Xanax that I only take when I fly. I think that would knock me out, but I'm resisting subbing one drug for another. I'm grateful for this group so I have somewhere to moan and groan if needed.
This might sound childish but when i wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep I watch cartoons. It really helps me to empty my thoughts and puts me right back to sleep.5 -
It’s day 6 for me. I’ve finished most of my cleaning and I worked out earlier. It’s 2 pm and I’m trying to decide what to do. I’m not only doing dry January, I’m also getting my diet back on track. That means I also can’t be snacky all afternoon, lol. I think I’m going to make some coffee right now and find a good movie to watch since my son doesn’t want to play a game with me. Hope everyone else is having a good day!!3

Does anyone have a non-alcohol related goal this week? Mine is to journal one sentence every day. Not hard to do.
Another is to go to a yoga class. And finally, the last is not to eat any chocolate or other treats.1 -

My goal is to go to the gym 3 times and do yoga 2 times. That’s actually my weekly goal going forward along with keeping track of my diet with MFP and keeping alcohol to one day a week3 -

I've been exercising consistently all my life, but for the remainder of January I've set up a schedule of specific workouts I want to do each morning. This rotation is pretty challenging and ambitious and the only way I can do it is if I don't have any wine the night before. I started with this schedule this morning and I am psyched to continue!

Went to a bday yesterday. Immediately I was bullied into having a glass of wine. I declined. But i did have small glass of Sangria and one shot of Titos for the bday guy. I am proud of the fact I stopped at that and just had water for the rest of the night. That is a big step for me!!!

If I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep, I can always count on Smithsonian channel to have Aerial America on. It's a wonderful show, but not if you've seen EVERY EPISODE at least 50 times. Sadly, Smithsonian channel is not what it once was and the reruns are out of control. Helps me sleep though!

Dry January a wet one for me so far. Polished off a bottle of wine while talking on the phone for 2 hours last night. I just kept pouring my glass (I don’t stop at one, ever).7

I plan on working out everyday, I am walking on the treadmill and I have started lifting weights for my arms. Also get in my 8 glasses of water a day.3 -
Lol, stripping the wallpaper in the up bath and continuing to patch defects in a room. Aside from that, 20 min. on the tread each day and drinking all my water each day. Oh and get back to brushing the cat.

I have heard that the light from the tv, cell phones and computer too much during the day and/or too close to bed can disrupt sleep. Also eating less than 4 hours prior to sleep.

It’s supposed to be a sarcastic woo like dumb diets and ideas that have no basis in science are considered “woo”. But a lot of people think it means “woohoo”, sooo....0 -

Alcohol is a hard one for me. Drinking is part of by job, I work at a boutique wine & craft beer shop. We don't offer sampling, but several times a week sales reps come in with multiple samples. Those days I have to skip breakfast & lunch just to stay on target.
Normally I can polish off a whole bottle of wine a night. Comfortably, without sleep problems or headaches I stick to 450 ml a day or less.
This doesn't even address the high gravity/calorie beers that I am supposed to be familiar with. I have to buy those to sample myself and if I pay $15 for a 12oz barrel aged beer, I am not swishing & spitting or pouring it down the drain.3 -
7:30pm is my "happy hour" hard time. I try to drink a 12oz unsweetened soda water between every serving of alcohol. Or tea. Set the glass down far enough away that I have to move the angry cat off my lap to reach it again.2

Ok, trying again. My last post only partially showed up. Weird.......Dry January a wet one for me so far. Polished off a bottle of wine while talking on the phone for 2 hours last night. I just kept pouring my glass (I don’t stop at one, ever). I felt like poo poo this morning, headache, dry mouth, brain fog - trust me you all aren’t missing anything!!! This week I plan to stay dry. I’ve been loosely Keto eating and I’ve lost a little weight. So I’ll keep eating Keto!! Anyway, love reading your posts. Proud of all you!7

I can't imagine how tough it would be for you to abstain. It's part of your livelihood.0
