Dry January!

Sending positive vibes to everyone for the weekend. Even with my brother visiting I've managed to resist temptation today. It's now 9pm and going to bed otherwise would definitely indulge in a glass or two, (was on the 6am shift today and have 3 toddlers in house who will no doubt get us up stupidly early tomorrow).6

Hi everyone,
I am new here but this thread really spoke to me. I love wine... really love wine. I belong to a group of friends that do wine tasting dinners, I belong to several wine clubs from the Paso Robles area...etc. Right around Thanksgiving, I started to get so fed up with my lack of control over food (and wine) that I decided to abstain (from wine... not food!) I have imbibed only two days since then... New Year's Eve and New Years Day... and then it was a very little amount maybe 2 oz on NYE and 2 oz on NY. Since Thanksgiving I have lost 15 lbs. I am more aware of my food and the biggest victory for me is eliminating night-time snacks. When I was drinking wine at night I really didn't care what I was eating... or I felt "I need something on my tummy" excuse. I established a new habit of brewing a nice cup of tea before bed. Improvements beyond the weight loss you ask? I sleep way better, my joints are not inflamed, I just feel better all around. I started out by counting each day without alcohol... when I got to 30, had my party, got back to it... I am not counting. It's become normal NOT to crave a glass of wine at night. You can all do it and it will be beneficial to you. So Happy Dry January and GREAT JOB EVERYONE!11 -
Still dry...no cravings.
Had some friends head down to Key West this weekend, and they were trying to get me to go. Other than the horribly long drive (8 hours or so), I knew I didn't need the temptation while they were hitting the bars. It was a good thing my church had a three night conference - has keep me seriously busy, and too tired when I get home to think about alcohol and gave me the perfect excuse to not go with them. Hang tough this weekend, y'all!5 -
I love Saturday mornings!2

I realized I have to avoid social gatherings in my area when I was invited to the local icehouse on my neighbors birthday. I may need to stay indoors since this guy stops by and invites me over for a beer when passing by and I'm out working in the yard. South Texas here, we're not frozen most of the winter like much of the US. In fact it was in the mid 60s on this particular day I referenced.
Edit: I'll soar through day 8 with easy today!3 -

I found that I eventually just had to tell people that I'm off alcohol so they stop offering it to me. I've rarely had to give any further explanation. Your neighbor can find something else to offer you. Social gatherings can be about being social, not getting rocked.3 -
Hi! I'm new here at MFP (joined yesterday). This is my first post. Hope you don't mind me jumping into this challenge at the end of week 2. I know that the 20 pounds I've put on over the last couple of years are primarily due to my alcohol consumption. I really enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and going out with friends to the local craft breweries and wine bars. I'd like to continue the social aspect of drinking for years to come but I know I need to significantly cut back my overall alcohol calories. So my long term goal is to cut out the nightly wine with dinner and just stick to one glass out with friends now and then. In the short term I thought that going completely dry for a few weeks would be a good way to get started. I was happy to discover this supportive group here.
After a false start earlier this month, I went dry 3 days ago (on Wed, 1/10). I'm pleased that I've managed to successfully get through a couple of temptations already (no sake at the sushi bar, declined an invitation to the craft brewery). And yesterday I decided I'm going to experiment with the keto diet for the next few weeks which will also give me some extra motivation to stay dry.
Peace,
Karen6 -
Hope it’s okay if I jump in. Been dry since the second. Wish I could say I don’t miss it like so many of you but I do. I really enjoy a glass ( or two) of wine in the evening. I have been sleeping better and have seen some other improvements as well. Hot tea in my fancy china has been my evening replacement. Still prefer wine but I’m going to make it!!7

my husband and I started a 100 day dry challenge. we started this on boxing day. due to shift work we found we were drinking on average every 2 days. living in the Northern Territory tropical climate and being English we live it like we are on holiday and have done for over 2 years. Something needed to be done. My drink being Baileys, a ltr bottle or 700mls depending on the deals every drinking session.
So I would like to join this forum as nobody we know is going dry here. just will be hard when everyone starts to celebrate the end of Jan, we will still have 60 days to go lol5 -
Day 13...been cruising. Today passed liquor store on the way home from the gym and it looked good but going to take a walk instead. Got this.7

I got a late start, but almost 1 week is in the books. Sometimes I don't miss it, sometimes I really do. A friend said to keep in mind that the craving, when it swells up, will pass. It's like riding a wave. I think it's from the book my friend is reading, The Craving Mind https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300223248/craving-mind.2

What's your go-to alternative?
Seltzer with Dynamic Health's tart cherry, turmeric & ginger tonic + Lily of the Desert aloe juice. The extreme tartness of the tonic does a pretty good job of satisfying my craving for booze, esp. if I put it in a wine glass, or with ice into a cocktail glass.
I consume a lot of non-alcoholic ginger beer, too, often in a pilsner glass. Reed's Extra Ginger Brew pummels my tastebuds. Tomorrow I'm going to try making my own.
I often end the day with strong, hot ginger tea (usually Yogi).
Helps if I make a ritual out of it.2 -

I am drinking loads of sparkling water - and some tea too! I haven’t missed wine all that much until today - it’s been nearly two weeks and I’d like to have a glass but I will persevere!5 -
Still dry...but have to admit, kind of wanting some wine. No where near the daily cravings I had last year, but it would be nice to have a glass, but I won't. Wanted to go get a nice dinner out tomorrow night and realized all the food I wanted to eat, I typically like a drink with it even if it is just a light beer (Ribs, Mexican, Burgers/Steak). Having to rethink what I'm going to do for dinner tomorrow as I'd rather avoid the temptation/desire.4

Has anyone else read the mfp cutting out sugar blog? It states that taste buds take around 21 days to turn over, which I take to mean cravings are more tolerable or relatively nonexistent.
I haven't had added sugar since 12-23-17, my mfp daily average for sugar is under 30g, I feel great, and my cravings are very tolerable. Hopefully the urge to grab a random beer subsides in a week and a half, too. Working 12 hour days, 13 on 1 off, and exercising helps keep my mind of alcohol currently - but when I go back to 40 hours I'll just have to see...2 -
It's 9:30am on a Sunday, and I'm up and about and don't have a hangover!!
Not only that, but I've got up, caught up on my emails/social media etc, watched some TV, had breakfast, been out for a 7.5k run, done my stretches and had a shower. Something very odd is happening...7 -
Dry January kind of sucks.6

Still dry...had Mexican for dinner and it would have been nice to have a beer with a lime, but I had water with lime instead. Made the bill cheaper.3

Hang in there! It's half way over:)4 -
January sucks all around really, lol. Cold, fat, dry etc. I'm late to the thread but I do dry January every year. I'm a social drinker so I tend to just avoid anything social and just go through my routine (work, exercise, sleep!)4

Made it through my first weekend of the challenge (joined late)! 5 days dry for me. The last couple times I've planned for a dry spell I've always found an excuse to add in an occasional drink. I'm finding this attempt much easier since I've made changes to my diet at the same time. Tracking my macros and calories and aiming for very low carb is an extra motivation for me to stay dry. I'm already feeling better and looking forward to more improvements in both my health and the pocket book!
Stay strong this week, everyone. You're half way there!3 -
For those who started on Jan 1(or so), we're done with half, including two weekends!
Wishing everyone good resolve.8 -
I’ve made it this far! Hopefully the second half of the month will go just as well! :-)7

Still hangin' in there...8
