@Evanutt, we live in So Cal in the Riverside County area. We're having a very warm fall and winter here so far. I have to visit my kids and grandkids in CO to get any kind of weather this year......LOL
Oh yes.....I am here in SB county just over the hill from you. Today is supposed to be in the 80's!
My son is in ohio and my daughter in new jersey [{shiver}]! My joints can't take that weather....gotta wait for spring thaw!2 -

Ok. The New Year is here. The food holidays are over! Today and every single day from this moment forward is a new day! If you’ve been struggling, make a new commitment today to be kinder to yourself, to be more forgiving of your mistakes and start each day as a new opportunity to get to a healthier point in your life. You CAN do it! You are worth this effort and there are lots of people who will support you as you go forward. We don’t all have to do it the same way. We each find our own way to better health, but remember it doesn’t matter how old you are or what your health situation is. There are things you can do to make your health better in 2018! Move a little more today than you did yesterday. Lift some weights, milk jugs filled with water will work...use those muscles or lose them is so true, but remember, do no harm. You don’t have to have a gym membership or a trainer. You have a computer or a smart phone...look up YouTube exercise videos and get moving. Walk laps in your house or around the house, whatever! Just do something that keeps those muscles working! Snack less. Plan to succeed and follow that up with some kind of action. You’re not too old and it’s not too late! If not now, when? Only you can determine what is going into your mouth. Don’t worry what anyone else is eating, it’s really all about what you choose to eat for yourself. Be strong! Value yourself! You ARE WORTH IT! Happy New Year! Make it a good one!10

dsboohead & luluinca, I'm originally fm lala land (yes, the city); left there long time ago and now live in South Eastern US. It is struggling to make it to 40 today (only made it to 33 yesterday), pretty cold here. I can relate to the warm Christmas' and New Years! Just take it one day at a time and if you ate it, you ate it; forget it and pick up where you left off. Food was meant to be enjoyed (so enjoy)!!1

I'm new to the blog...but I'm impressed by your encouragement among. I am 62 years old, and I am a Certified Personal Trainer, with a specialty in Women's Fitness and Senior Fitness. I live in DC and work for one of the Federal Agencies, so the women I have trained are "gratis" clients. They get me for free--but they must be committed, or bye-bye. It's tough, because I can only work with them on the weekends--the rest of the time, they have to be self-motivated. I've had some great successes, and some that just didn't stay motivated to do it on their own. This is a great forum for motivating and encouraging each other. Keep it up!5

Time to bump this back .... Hope everyone is doing great. As for me, well, I've been in control and logging everything since January 2. It is easier now that I don't want to drink wine anymore! Have a cold, so I don't feel much like exercising, but I'll be back soon enough.

Yay, for the New Year's Bump! Still in maintenance and doing well. Back to the gym after the 16th, just waiting for surgical clearance, but I've been active every day and still hitting 20K steps. Can't stop us oldies!4

I got a fitbit for my Christmas present to myself- I am enjoying challenging myself- have been consistently hitting 10,000 steps- now for last week have gone up to 12,000 steps- will do this for several weeks - then onward and upward- I am also still trying to lose a bit of weight- so keeping it as healthy as possible with one treat meal-NOT day- just meal each week-4

@debtay .... I also got myself a Fitbit --- it was an accumulation of giftcards from a friend, and she was delighted that is what I had bought, saying her husband had reduced about 40lbs in a year with Fitbit as an aid. It helped me a lot at the time ... I was working and the weather was good and I could log 10-12K by adding in walking to and from the subway, etc. Some kind of issue developed with my hip, though. Nowdays, I am not working and rarely get to 10,000 steps. Anyway, I am back here logging my food, and plan on working up to more stepping and more exercise. I do love the Fitbit!

Hello, PianoRun (and all the others on this 124 page thread)!
I am now 62 and currently weigh about 145-150. I have been in that weight range for the last 4 years.
But at 57 I was 242 pounds. That was when I was diagnosed with an unusually aggressive (and very uncommon) strain of endometrial cancer. My surgeon removed a 2 POUND tumor, the approximate size of an cantaloupe, from my abdomen. I had the fun of radiation and chemo after that.
While in treatment, I found out that many adult onset cancers - including my own - are affected by obesity. (FYI, 70% of all breast cancers fall in this camp).
Even after treatment, the prognosis was dismal. They only gave me a 20% chance of living 5 years.
I wanted to improve those odds, so I decided to loose weight, clean up my diet, and adopt a regular, rigorous exercise program.
So in the next year (2013) I lost nearly 100 pounds the old fashioned way - by calorie restriction (a 1500 cal diet) coupled with regular, vigorous exercise.
And like I said, I have kept it off for 4 years now. The reason I joined MyFitnessPal is because now, I want to go down a bit further, to about 130-135 range. But I'm at 148 right now.
I was 57 - 58 when I lost all that weight.
We CAN do it at our age, but it is harder for us, than it is for younger women. Or for men.13 -

I have a question for all you ladies that exercise regularly. I am 56 years old and my whole life I have been active. I regularly walked 4 miles a day. When I was 49, I started running, which I love to do. I have done a number of 5ks and well as a half marathon. But lately, I can't seem to be consistent in my exercise. My goals are to run 3 days a week, lift 2-3 days, walk my dogs 2 miles a day. I have the motivation, but I don't seem to have the energy I use to have. Example, Monday I ran 2 miles and lifted for 30 minutes, but yesterday I could not move. My question, how do you keep going? I think I eat sufficient calories to fuel the workouts. Do you schedule more rest days? I feel like a failure when I don't accomplish my goals. Any suggestions would be appreciated, even if it is to just suck up and do it.2

Have you had a blood test lately? Thyroid, iron, some key vitamin levels (B12, D, etc.)? Talked to your doctor, in general? That's too young for an active, healthy, well-nourished person to feel slow-down.
Sleep or stress level change? Eating enough protein, micronutrients, carbs? If losing weight, losing too fast? Drinking adequate water?

Also have your hormone levels checked. After I had a hysterectomy at age 57 my energy level increased tremendously. I dropped 40 pounds and I've started running for the first time since my military days.2 -

I use to live in SB county ...Montclair and then Victorville but live in Central Ca now ...... near Yosemite

Just coming back to MFP after being away for 3 years, and your posts are truly inspiring! I am 60 with hypothyroid, and have a husband who has had many medical issues, so lots of excuses to not exercise and for having gained 32lb in the last 5 years. But thank you for telling your stories and reminding me that I need to take responsibility for my own health and well being!5

I'll second what @AnnPT77 said. Have your doctor check your iron and thyroid levels. Just reading your post made me tired. Are you sure that you're fueling your activity properly by eating enough calories? Is your deficit too aggressive? You say that you think you eat sufficient calories, but are you weighing and measuring everything with a food scale? Are you trying to change too many eating/lifestyle habits too quickly. Many people take a couple of rest days by alternating heavy exercising (running/lifting) with active rest days (walking or just moving about).
I've found that even without formal exercise (gym/lifting/running) I can still maintain my 50lb loss (close to 3 years now) by just walking and staying active (20K per day). You don't have to do everything every single day. You are not a failure by any means. If you're losing weight at an acceptable rate you're winning. Slow and steady as you go.4 -
ColleenRuns, You might want to add weight training to what you are already doing. It will help w/retaining your muscle (which burns calories) and you may be able to add some back (you lose muscle as you age). Start out small and do exercises you enjoy; don't worry about how much you can lift, just make sure you use correct form. There are all kinds of places to look (Bodybuilding.com, etc). Terrific job on your success! And my sister's name is Colleen!2

I don't sleep well after a hard day of exercise, so I think I am going to try to get in a routine before bedtime to help me fall asleep. And I may be dehydrated as AnnPT77 suggested. I will make an effort to increase water consumption. And thanks AnnPT77 for saying that I am too young to be feeling this way. I try to blame my age, but then I see all you awesome women on this forum that are my age and you are "killing it" so I can't use that excuse. Thanks again6

Some of you know we moved my sister in with us over the Labor Day Weekend, she has cancer and is now on Hospice. It's a very sad moment in time for me but as things seem to work according to a more divine plan, we welcomed our new little grandson into the world 3 weeks early on Thanksgiving Eve.
My goal is to remain strong AND healthy for him and my daughter. They live in CO and I live in CA so lots of airplane trips back and forth are in my future as well as mountain hikes, it's what we do........LOL

Thanks, Healthy67Chick --- I thought everyone had moved over to the young crowd at menopausal women. They do have some good posts, too, but now I am in my 60s, I want to know more about women around my age who have lost, or are losing weight. 2018 has been a slightly rough on my will to exercise, as I had flu for 2 weeks, my husband was in hospital last week, and we are actually having a "seasonal" winter here for the first time in a few years, meaning lots of snow and very cold .... Nonetheless I am determined to improve my health and stick with MFP and see what happens. Also, I decided to do Dry January this year, and now think I want to try this alcohol-free experiment for at least 3 months. While I wouldn't have described myself as a problem drinker, it certainly makes losing weight a problem for me, as I would have lots of snacks with wine. So far this year, I've lost 7-8 lbs. without too much difficulty. However, to ease into things, I did not set myself at a calorie deficit. Instead, I set my limit for maintenance calories for a woman of my ideal (healthy) weight. I figure that ultimately, as long as I don't go over, my weight has to adjust, and I'd have maintenance built right into my dietary habits by the time I get there, lol! Nonetheless, I have been eating, for the most part, at an average 300 calorie deficit, because my activity level is not that great so far. Got to get to work on that!
