Great job @BruinsGal_91!
Just scanned through the last couple of pages, so sorry not to comment more. @7lenny7 I did catch your post about the create a route feature on Garmin Connect. I just tried it since I'm in San Diego for the next few days, so I wanted to see where it would send me. Seemed to pick strange routes. I don't think I'll be using it. Seems like it might be the most helpful if you were running streets/sidewalks only and just cared about getting the distance as your only criteria.

Yesterday was an exhausting and challenging travel day (winter can just eff off now), but I made it to San Diego. This morning I woke up super early due to the time change and had to wait until it got light to go for my run. I headed to Balboa Park, and just ran around on some of the trails there. It was fairly hilly and there were some nice paths and some kind of sketchy ones. Overall a good run, but I was sure glad the way back to the hotel was downhill.
I decided on this run that it's officially time to replace my shoes. The tread doesn't look that bad but the cushioning seems to be giving out. I'm tempted to ditch them and not pack them back in my suitcase to go home (maybe I can donate them as there are many homeless around here).
My conference is officially underway this afternoon (actually started this morning but I wasn't interested in the topics of the opening session), so I will be busy the next few days. Hopefully will get at least a short run in each day. Today I'm just hoping I can survive without my usual post-long-run nap. I have a feeling I'm going to be ready for bed very early tonight.
Hope everyone has a good running weekend.

Ran this morning in the rain (at least it was 55F/12C) in a local 5K called Hug a Cub. This is the elementary school Skip went to and it's their annual fundraiser. I would have been 2nd in my AG if they did a 55 - 59 AG instead they did weird things like 9/10, 11/12 until they got to 20, then it was 20/24, until they got to 50 then it was 50/59 so I was 4th in my AG but I would have been 2nd if they did 55/59, no matter it's a fun race and a good cause. Skip didn't run, our XC/T&F kids volunteer each year as timers, sentries and all around do whatever in support. So proud that 12 of them got there at 7 am in the rain to help.
I ran a 33:52, WAY behind my PR but I felt good through the whole race.
I need to catch up on the thread!!9 -
@skippygirlsmom I hate it when they muck about with the age-groups. I'm in the 50-54 group, but most of the races I run, the organisers use 50-59. I can usually get a decent place, but there are some local races I run which use 40-99, and there is no way I can keep up with all those speedy 40-somethings.1

I went on a couple more runs this week and have been working on my strength training. I decided to do several reps of different squat variations with some weights and woke up the next day hardly able to walk up the stairs - so no run yesterday. Today I desperately want to run outside after only treadmill runs for the last month - but it's probably too cold. I think I'll try to run outside and see how it goes, otherwise, back to the treadmill again. Anyone have any tips for surviving the dreadmill? Also, here's an interesting article I found about treadmill v. outdoor running:

@BruinsGal_91 my friend was telling me she ran a race that had NO age groups over 40. She said it wasn't even like 45 and up. It literally stopped at 40. That's insane. I was happy they had so many lower age groups so lots of kids won medals, they had 0/5, 6/7, 8/9 things like that. They are had couples awards, but you could the couples/team award and the individual awards giving you 2 medals for the one race. I thought that was weird too. Some nice door prizes, which were cool too.3 -

SO RUNNING STORE UPDATE
So several pages back in this thread I mentioned how I took my wife to a running store to get her good shoes for a change (instead of picking the color she likes off a clearance rack at Walmart). Well, she left the store that night (Wednesday) with a pair of Brooks the guy assured her were right. She liked the color and thought they were good.
WELL. She when for a 5 mile run and said it felt like her toes were smooshed up. So we brought her back this afternoon and a young lady helped her. I pulled the shoes out and mentioned how the wear pattern on her old shoes was, and she made a face. Then she had my wife walk, and stand and stuff.
Turns out that guy gave her exactly the opposite kind of shoes that she needed. The lady apologized over and over, and then helped my wife find new shoes (and took the other ones back):
So instead of getting my long run in today, spent it at the shoe store, but my wife has new again shoes.
The lady said, "I am so glad you came back in, cause you could have gotten hurt in those other shoes." *sigh* Well all things worked out in the end. Now just have to find time for our runs (we both were scheduled for a long run today and we both missed it).

All this earbud discussion and mine kept dying today so I put them away at the 5km mark. Oh well.
Yesterday my back was killing me so I didn't have high hopes for today but when I woke up this morning I felt okay. Decided to run a route that had lots of potential spots to loop back to home. The first mile or so was uncomfortable but by the second I was fine, if a bit slower than usual. The last half mile my hip was a bit sore. I have 2 non-running days in a row so I think I will pamper myself and see how things are on Tuesday.

Rainy run but the temperature was a nice 42F when we started at 6:00 am. Our local Pie Five has a cauliflower pizza crust now so I thought I would treat myself at lunch but sadly they were temporarily out of them so I went to McAlister’s instead.
Congrats @BruinsGal_91 and @Skippygirlsmom!
@PastorVincent – I wore a pair of Brooks just like those today. Hope your wife likes hers as much as I do.
@Sarathes – glad you are going to give your back and hips a rest – sounds like they could use it. Hope you are feeling better soon.
@kat_ontherun – I like to watch shows on my iPad while on the treadmill. If that’s not an option, I find that doing intervals help pass the time. You can warm-up, run a comfortable pace for half a mile and then push the speed up for the next half mile, go back to comfortable pace for half a mile and repeat. You can do the same with the incline
Upcoming Races:
February 24-25 – Gasparilla Amber Challenge (15K & 5K on Saturday; Half Marathon on Sunday)

Falling behind this month. Struggling with a head/sinus issues every few days.
I placed 2nd in my age group today. I was 18th overall. There were maybe 40-ish people (if that). I was actually surprised as I'm usually a middle of the pack runner. The closest I've come before was 4th in age group.16 -

Congratulations @BruinsGal_91, @RunsOnEspresso, and @skippygirlsmom on your race results! Also congrats to @PastorVincent on getting your wife shoes that fit!
I tried out my springy brand new out of the box Altra Escalantes on a nice flat bike trail for 10 mi and managed my second fastest 10 miler and 15K since I've been tracking on Strava (over 3 years). Hamstring still tweaked a bit but felt strong. Maybe shouldn't have pushed it as much as I did since I am supposed to run a lot tomorrow too.... Weather was gray and depressing but not super cold. Would love to see the sun some time soon! Did a yoga class this morning too.

Congratulations @RunsOnEspresso!
@PastorVincent So great that the shoe swap worked--that could have been ugly
@katharmonic San Diego sounds gorgeous! I have a conference in LA the week after next, and am hoping to get at least hotel treadmill miles in, but it's hard to find the time in that schedule..
February goal: 50 miles
2/1/2018 cross train: rowing machine 6K
2/2/2018 2.5 mi
2/3/2018 7 mi (PR for distance!)
2/4/2018 rest
2/5/2018 xtrain: rowing machine 6K
2/6/2018 3 mi
2/7/2018 2.5 mi on treadmill
2/8/2018 3 mi
2/9/2018 rest
2/10/2018 8 mi (PR for distance!)
Feb total: 26 mi
Tentative races:
2/17/2018 Magnuson President's Day 10K
8/12/2018 Lake Union 10K
Today was sunny and gorgeous--I planned to run 7 miles again, but I was well fueled and well rested, and 8 miles would put me at less than 5% more total miles than last week, so I went for it. Plus with a 10K next weekend and a conference the following one, I figured I wouldn't be able to do much in the way of increasing distance on my long runs for a while if not today. So that was fun!4 -
02/01/2018 - 4.01 miles
02/02/2018 - Rest Day
02/03/2018 - 4.11 miles

02/09/2018 - Rest Day
02/10/2018 - 5.02 miles
18.17/65 miles
Had to plan today’s run very carefully. Rain and thunderstorms in the forecast - there was a break in the rain between about 8 am and noon to run. I was expecting light rain or drizzle but had none during my run. Temperature was 64 F with 100% humidity. Whoever is tired of winter can come to South Louisiana to run.
My son is on crutches with a high ankle sprain from his running accident at football practice this week. Doctor also wants him to do physical therapy since he is an athlete to help him recover quickly.
I registered for my April race yesterday. It is called the Fat Boy 5K and is April 14th. It usually sells out very quickly. They have teams that weigh in and awards are given to the team with the heaviest weight and fastest time. Prizes include chocolate, smoked sausage. Donuts are the post race food of choice.
Upcoming races (Question marks are races not yet registered for):
Louisiana Marathon Quarter Marathon - 01/13/2018 - Done
Mardi Gras Mambo 10K -02/17/2018
Q50 Races Sunset Gulf - 6.5 miles 3/24/2018
Fat Boy 5K - 04/14/2018
BIG EASY BIG HEART 5K 7/21/2018 - ?8 -
Completed week one of the walk/run program. It was a very stressful week but at least I was able to get my workouts in.10
-
02.10-11.07k Total-33.5k
Long run of the week. Felt great going out, was thinking oh I must be doing something right. Some back leg pain in the last 3k or so, stretched, no biggie. Garmin bugged out on me in the middle of the run, not only losing a chunk of distance but also logging a new 5k record of 11 minutes. Go figure.
Races in the foreseeable future:
03.18 HM Chengdu
Re: Headphones I used to swear by them, especially when I was working on cadence in the beginning. Loaded a bunch of 180 bpm songs onto my mp3 and marched around by the beat. It took a few months, but one day I suddenly found the beats were actually a tad slower than my step rate and was bogging me down... only listened to audiobooks and Japanese talk radio after that. SO still swears by the tunes and can't run a meter without a good playlist.5 -
This is a really cool idea, I’m really new to running and trying to get more into it so I’m just going to set me goal for the rest of the month at 20 kilometres (sorry I can’t think in miles)10
-

2/2 and then had to start cleaning and cooking
2/3 and digging the underground oven to cook kalua pig and turkey for 55 people
2/4 who came to our annual SuperBowl Luau!
2/5 and then was too exhausted to move
2/6 4.10
2/7 5.20
2/8 last minute dinner with friends
2/9 fluish. Tamiflu to rescue
2/10 4.40
Total 13.70 (not doing very well at achieving my goal this month.....)
congrats @RunsOnEspresso
@7lenny7 great owl shot!

-8C yesterday -27C this morning. Didn't make it out yesterday due to heavy eye's in the am and Family commitments in the pm. So today promises's to be a little chilly - probably a 5km shorty.
Welcome to the group @avocardiothyme and @theshaleco. Km, Miles, Week 1 of X, Minutes or what ever you use as a measure of your progress and achievements is up to you. The ultimate goal is to get out and move.
Awards for Recent Profile Pictures to @Joyous2018 for her Go Team Canada Go and @abutcher2122 for that gem.
The way the one runner is in shorts while the other is in full on cold weather gear is a very honest depiction of differant runners out at the same time, plus the " There's no place like home " I know some people who are exactly like that.4 -
I’m so behind on the thread I figured I’ll never catch up so I’m starting from when I posted. Ha Ha Skip got an email that she finished 130 out of 159 runners yesterday, but she didn’t run at all. I said great job. It was funny, but actually 159 signed up 129 ran so everyone who didn’t finished 130.
@PastorVincent I like the Brooks what kind are they? I brought a new pair of Brooks Ghost 10 on Friday night. I usually wear Brooks Launch 4 but they didn’t have any so the owner of Fleet Feet recommended the Ghost 10. They changed from the 9 to 10 and I hate the 9 but the 10 felt a lot like the Launch 4. I’ll run in them today, it was pouring yesterday so I wore something else.
@Sarathes hope your feel better soon, back and hip pain is no fun
@RunsOnEspresso great job on the age group
@simcon1 great PR distance
@Bride001 I hope your son recovery quickly. Why don’t they have races like the Fat Boy 5K by me LOL
@Joyour2018 great job on week one

Thanks for all the support! You are all so very inspiring, great runners and motivators. I'm happy I found this group.6
