Joyce ... I've been seeing advertisements on tv for The Ark and we've had friends that have visited. I'd like to go sometime too!
Dana .... you resemble your Mom! Is the dark haired woman your "evil" sister?
KarenVA ... today, just for today, I WILL stay within my calorie goals and track my food!
Another rainy day here with temperatures projected to reach the mid-60s and then snow again on Thursday!?
Have a good day, ladies!
Beth near Buffalo5 -
Good morning ladies!
Happily, the predicted low of 20f this morning did not appear this morning... it's 28f right now, might drop a degree or two by the time the sun comes up. Amazingly, sidewalk and roads didn't appear to be too slippery yesterday in our neighborhood.
Well, I BINGED big time yesterday. This time it wasn't on food, lol. I watched the whole "Loch Ness" series on AcornTV (Amazon Prime). Love those UK detective shows, and this one did not disappoint. Kudos to the writers who had just about everyone as a suspect until the very end.
Karen UK - your getaway at Porthleven sounds fabulous. I just looked it up on the map. Doc Martin land - I am so excited for you!!
Also, did a little more research on resistant starch. Rye talked about it in this group a few weeks ago. I baked a sweet potato yesterday and will start looking at baked & cooled potatoes (white and sweet), cold rice and bean dishes and green vs. ripe bananas for main meal additions and snacks. It was fascinating reading about how the gut treats these carbs differently and how they impact the glycemic index differently. I know several of you eat cold sweet potatoes and now I'm understanding why.
So, what I'm wondering is - does cold pizza count?
KJ - I love reading about all of the activities you plan for your kids. I can envision the blustery winds coming off Lake Michigan. Joaquin is a cutie - thank you for the pix!
Marcelyn - loved the photos of your grands as well. So neat they live close enough to each other to take advantage of the photo deal.
Cheri - I've been thinking of your son moving to Chicago and what a climate change that will be for him. Best of luck to him! Lots to do in Chicago as I recall, especially for a young person.
Karen in VA - glad you were able to get some action on that water heater, on a 3 day weekend no less. Seems like heating/cooling/water AND medical problems happen on late Friday afternoons! Hope that's the end of HVAC problems for a long time.
Karen in NY - Rome looks great! What fun - hope the weather is good! I can't wait to see more photos and hear of your adventures!!
Barbara S Oregon Coast & Kim - thankfully most of our snow melted yesterday, despite a high of only 38. More coming today. I'll make sure to send you some with strict instructions to NOT land on the roads!
Kim - I was going to mention I've had Shepherd's pie with mushrooms at it was GREAT!! I have a vegan friend that does a lot with cashews - I wonder if they or other nuts could be incorporated in some fashion. HHmm. Yum.
Lisa - I am so glad things are coming together with your daughter's upcoming childcare search and son's move to Arkansas. Yay on shedding the water weight! You are such a good writer - it must be fun to write those shorter intro pieces.
Joyce - Nice that you are getting a spell of warm weather - knowing Indiana, I doubt winter is done yet. Glad the Lyrica appears to be helping and good for you getting that thingie on your back taken care of! I hear you on wanting to have a peaceful walk without the cussing!
Laura - your granddaughter is a cutie as well; beautiful smile! Does she live close to you?
Beth - that T shirt about jogging is so cute. I want one!
Wendy - your husband's friends remind me of the Little Rascals who need adult supervision. I'd suggest calling a meeting and letting them know that you are "SWMBO" - she who must be obeyed, lol. Slap a riding crop in your palm for emphasis or maybe a bullwhip just to get their attention. The riding crop will get their minds wandering, lol.
Dana - glad to hear your daughter's estranged husband is back to the talking stage. Good thing you are heading down there and glad you got a good deal on the flight. Thank you for sharing the photos of your mom - I'm sure you have good memories of her.
Yesterday afternoon, I managed to pull myself away from Loch Ness long enough to prepare unstuffed cabbage rolls. (I had to recharge the battery on the laptop ) The recipe is three layers of shredded cabbage with meat sauce & cooked rice between the cabbage layers, topped off with the cabbage then covered with mozzarella cheese the last ten minutes. If I was making them just for me I would have subbed quinoa for the bit of rice, but overall it was really low-carb. DH loves it plus he's actually getting some veggies - tomato sauce and shredded cabbage. And, there's enough to take care of 2 more days worth of dinners.
Hi to newbies and hugs to all who need them!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!!! A bit cold here in Western Nebraska but woke up to a beautiful morning of fresh snow and sparkling snowflakes!!
Have been driving a lot for my job so not getting in steps like I should but doing better on water.
Make some Keto bread that I love over the weekend!
Waiting on my grand-daughter to be born. She was due Sunday but has decided to take her sweet time...like her mommy did!! :-)
Have a great day!! Trying to catch up on all of you!!5 -
Karen in NY keep up with the travelogue! I’m with you in memory! SPQR
Lanette my resistant starch research suggests you don’t have to eat the carbs cold - just that they need to cool once to bring up the resistant starch percentage. ( so I often make my potato or husband’s rice or pasta in the morning cool it, refrigerate it, and reheat for dinner). Reheating has marginal effect on resistance of starch. Again, I’m not up on science but just in case it helps, that is how I have my potatoes mostly these days.

Husband managed to lock his keys in his car at work, so it has been one crazy morning. Remember, I don’t have a drivers license so I couldn’t get the extra set of keys to him. Been a fun morning trying to make all the arrangements- his cell phone was in his car too. Thank heavens he had an Apple Watch on!

Sorry, I hardly ever use acronyms. HVAC is heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They actually do everything for us. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.
Dana Love, love, love the pictures of your beautiful mom. She had a lovely, warm, inviting smile. She looks fun.
Beth You go girl. Just For Today I started out with scrambled eggs. I am logging on cronometer.com now instead of MFP. Trying to get through today. I ate some licorice last night after I was too tired and didn't feel good this a.m. Hardly EVER eat candy, I am more inclined to go for savory, but we have some Licorice Scotty Dogs here for some unfathomable reason and I ate some. There is a Just For Today thread that I like on MFP:

Lanette Thanks. Tommy did a good job on our hot water repair, but forgot to turn the hot water recirculator back on, so I did have to make one more trip under the house. Not a big deal. We like having instant hot water. We are considering replacing our old tankless hot water heater with a new one. So we may be having some more work, but not as an emergency.
Wendy Gosh. I think you should be a bi@tch and lay down some rules for the cretins that are riding roughshod over your Paradise. In my experience, if you expect people to behave well, they usually do, but it's harder to get them to follow the rules of etiquette after the fact. You will have your work cut out for you. They will respect you more if you make them behave. Right now they are taking advantage of you, and they are getting away with being rude and disrespectful. Not to mention they are putting your horses at risk. I doubt they would think it was okay for you to put their trucks in neutral and give them a little shove down an incline, right? I know you didn't ask for my opinion, but you are such a hard worker and a good soul, it totally pi$$es me off for you to be disrespected. Crack that whip!

Hi Ladies,
I'm planning to venture out today after being indoors for a week. Finally, feeling well enough to do something. I'm going to ease myself back into my workouts, tho.
Barbara- Yes I believe that easy does it will be my mantra for the next few days. Keeping up with my water and calorie needs. I may fit in a short walk later today. Talk to y'all soon.

Evelyn: It sounds like the Cookie Jar needs to go on vacation. Maybe one of your children or grandchildren would be thrilled with it as a gift. Frozen raspberries sound wonderful and healthful. Great choice!
Dana in AR: I know from experience that it is possible to get a decent breakfast at McDonalds, but I wouldn't like to make a habit of it. There are too many temptations and too much sodium for me. I hope you enjoy your trip to FL in March. I love your mom's photos. What a great smile! :flowerforyou:
Machka: When we go out it is usually for Chinese food. When we get take out, our favorite is Papa Murphy's Pizza--you bake it yourself.
Barbara: It is snowing here at this very moment. We have a similar amount as I see in your photo. Since I don't have to go anyplace today, I don't mind watching the flakes fall.
Karen UK: I am definitely a Doc Martin fan. The site of the filming is spectacular. Cornwall and King Arthur are firmly linked in my brain. It is a place I'd like to see if we ever get across the pond.
Lanette: It is snowing here, too. It is one of those days that I'm glad to be at home, warm and safe while watching the snow fall.
Snow is falling, I have hummingbirds at my feeder, and I'm planning to stay inside as much as possible. There are a few things we could use from the grocery store, but we can get by with out them for a while.
DD is asking about Klamath Falls. I haven't been there in about 30 years. Does anybody have information they can share?

Once I get through that one day and wake up the next day, I feel more in control. It always starts breaking down for me in the evening, too, when I am going through a bad time. I find that brushing my teeth, making a cup of hot tea, chewing sugarless gum, getting busy with a puzzle, getting on MFP, and going to bed early are all helpful in getting throught the danger zone. The key for me is getting through just one day. Hope that helps a little.

Karen And KJ (Karen) thanks for ideas about busy hands at night. I do want to make a photo album of my travels and pics. Great idea! I have a FB page but a specific album documenting my last year is a great idea!
DH surgery is tomorrow. I always let my stress and anxiety get out of hand. Reason I retired early. I know my worries are not anything like some others I read about here. Puts things in perspective for me.
Thanks for putting up with me everyone!

SW WA State where we have snow flurries right now. Good day to stay home and watch it!

Rainstorm here, thunder and lightning. Beginning to ice to the west of us and temp here has now dipped below freezing. I'd rather have snow than ice. Off to do my Workout then finish the "fabrege" egg I started yesterday .
Love to you,

Lanette: My husband is not actively in the antique business. He is still going to sales on the weekend and buying things, but, they get packed away with the rest of the stuff that has accumulated over the past 40 yrs from his family's shop and from what he has collected. Right now, he watches tv all day and gets mad at me for staying on the computer much of the day. He has his own computer, so that isn't the problem.

I was thinking of Gloworm recently, also. Glad for the update from Allie on the grand boys. For those of you who don't know, Gloria was one of us. Was it Janetr? or Carol? anyway, somebody noticed that there were some concerning FB posts on her page, and discovered that Gloria had been struck by a car while walking her dog, and was killed. She was raising her grandsons. We miss her, it's still so hard to think about, isn't it? Glad to hear that the grandsons are doing okay.
Carol LOL! In my neck of the woods, there are some great opportunities for old farts to get out of their wives' hair - Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Maymont Park, where the engineers and gardeners volunteer and make all kinds of displays for the Christmas season and other events. Also the Train Museum where the retired train enthusiasts build model train displays all day long, and run the museum. Science Museum where the scientists give lectures and direct groups here and there. Virginia Art Museum where the artistic can volunteer, the Civil War Museum and Va Historical Society for history buffs...you get the picture. Lots and lots of places for old men to go to spend the day. And of course they can be NICU Grannies and hold babies all day.

Top 3 faves:
Italian
Pub grub (hot wings/boneless skinless buffalo tenders)
Mexican
Alas, not much Italian, except for pizza, and no Indian here. Haven't found good "wings" yet but the Thai restaurant has a great chicken sate.
Carol in GA I wouldn't be able to stand it so get out of the house at least 4 times a week ;} Can't imagine Joe volunteering for any of the worthy causes Karen in VA suggested, will be interested in other's tips on how to get hubs out to socialize/connect.
Lanette found this good news http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29629761 cooked, cooled then reheated starch even more favorable effect on insulin sensitivity. Wonder what further results since 2014? No need to share that snow you can keep it all for yourself LOVE your advice to Wendy. Riding crop carrying SWMBO. Priceless!
Rye would you remind us about the resistant starch discussion referred to by Lanette? Could be a big help to us carb junkies.
Karen in VA, "...plumbing and electrical" ? Wow your HVAC folks do it all! "put their trucks in neutral..." Just saying it might help them to understand how Wendy feels about her horses being endangered.
Katla neither did I venture away from home yesterday but will go line dancing tonight so fingers X'd. What info are you looking for about Klamath Falls? High desert, cold in winter, hot in summer and not lush green like NW Oregon...
Rita sending good thoughts for DH's surgery and swift full easy recovery.
Time to meditate, SWSY arms and breakfast. Think I'll reheat yesterday's baked potato

Resistant Starchother interesting thing is resistant starch. There is some science to back this up, but not tons yet. When a resistant starch food like sweet potato is heated up, then cooled, some of the starch changes character to the point that it becomes resistant to digestion. Our body then treat it like it is fiber not carbohydrate. OK that part has good science behind it.
The interesting thing is that they have recently found that reheating these starches that do this does NOT Reverse the process as previously thought.
So you don’t have to eat your potatoes or sweet potatoes ( or pasta) cold to get the boost in resistant starch. While it is not enough calories saved for me to even bother changing the default entries on MFP, it is a kind of silent boost in my diet to fiber intake and properly feeding my gut biome.
So any day that I would like a baked potato: I heat it up in the microwave in the morning cool it on the counter then put it in the refrigerator before I actually use it that night for dinner. When I reheat it still tastes exactly as it would have if I had it directly out of the microwave earlier.
Yeah, I wish we could find more and more recent info on this, but it appears that for at least 3 starches: pasta, rice, and potatoes- if you cook, then cool (then reheat if you wish) some of the starch gets converted to a starch that acts more like fiber and resists digestion. You can “see” this when using the cooled things, the gummy consistency of refrigerated rice for instance.1 -

Barbara - I am super glad to share the snow.
Rye - good info about pasta, rice and potatoes being resistant when reheated.
I found an article yesterday saying not to reheat because it "destroyed the crystals" in the cooked/cooled start which turns it into fiber.... it might have been Dr. Hyman. I'll keep looking tho.
I think that study in the link Barbara provided was very interesting. Sometimes just for kicks I check my glucose an hour after a meal, and I know I've been baffled at how low it is after eating what I'd consider high-starch foods. So I think there is something to it. Sugar is sugar tho. Wish heated up and cooled sugar made it more resistant. I'd heat up a batch of Reese cups if that was the case.
I do like Asian cold noodle salads with sesame oil. Haven't ever made one but I think I'll look for recipes today, they might use rice noodles. Does anyone have a recipe?
By the way, every time I do my strength training I write "SWSY" on the calendar I have hanging in my workout room. On days I really don't feel like heading out there, I do it anyway, and part of the habit is the satisfaction of being able to mark it on the calendar. A small thing. Strong Women Stay Young.

Had a good lunch with my friend. I had soup and gave her the bread and butter. Then a starter portion of Moroccan Rabbit Leg with salad. I barely used any of the harisaa mayonnaise. It was nice to be driven there as I could wear high heeled knee length boots. As I spend most of my life in sportswear it's great to scrub up occasionally.
My yoga friend texted me during the meal to say she hasn't been accepted on the training programme for celebrant. She is very disappointed.
Going to do something slimming with prawns and tomatoes for dinner. Broccoli. I have put a huge baked potato in for DH's calorie needs.
Katla - Sorry to hear your daughter is not happy. Did you feel that when you were there recently? I think you sensed a long time ago that things might not work out perfectly with their arrangements.
Much love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx2 -
Gorgeously hot summer day!! It was up to 37C on the trail, but a bit lower than that in the shade. And now we're relaxing in air con.
We'll walk into town in a little while for dinner.
Speaking of dinner, and with the comments about Mexican food earlier in this thread ...
What are your top 3 favourite cuisines?
Me ... generally speaking, and recognising that there are regional differences ...
Mexican
Indian
Italian

Machka, you and I would be great dinner/lunch buddies. We could rotate through those three choices over and over.2 -
Today is Love Your Pet Day!
"How’s your relationship with your favourite furry friend? Love Your Pet Day is a chance to show your cat, dog, tortoise or [insert other] how you really feel. Treats, pampering and all the the attention that the little guy or gal can handle are a great way to celebrate!" I know a lot of us are great at this!
Heather - The vegetable curry sounds fab! If I were going to go vegetarian, Indian food would definitely be in my meal plan often.
Jean - Welcome! Looking forward to getting to know you.
Marcelyn - Wow, that is a LOT of grands! How many children & step-children did your step-mother have?
Joyce - My dear friend Rose was a champion cusser. Her dad owned a gas station and let her hang around with "the guys" throughout her childhood. Then when she hit puberty he realized she was a girl and expected her to act lady-like... too late! Sometimes I was embarassed by her potty mouth, but that's who she was. Would give a lot to hear her turning the air blue again.
Karen - Ooh, I envy you your time at the cottage! I've been feeling overdue for a beach trip, and hope to get one in before it gets too hot if I can get all this estate business wound up quickly.
Rita - Wishing your husband a smooth surgery and a quick recovery.
Welcome to any new arrivals I missed!
Well, I finally got tired of all the big plants being on the front porch when it's in the 70s outside, so we hauled them out this morning. It's early yet so there's always the chance we'll have to heave them back inside, but at least they'll get some sunlight and a good watering in the meantime.
From the looks of my work in-box, I'm not going to get to the estate errands today. That means I probably won't be able to visit gyms until next week. As my brother said this weekend, "Who knew it was so much trouble to inherit a bunch of money?" (Dad was not loaded, but he did work hard and save for his entire career so he was reasonably comfortable... enough that our inheritance will give me and my siblings some options we didn't have before.)
Had a meeting with my health coach this morning, and was able to tell her I'm feeling positive and motivated at the moment. Motivation is a good thing... I'm not sure why exactly the Motivation Fairy finally visited me, but I'm not going to complain!
Joy to all -

Barbara you asked: "Wendy Brava! Love the suited up pic of you and your mum. Love the Dreams Come True club. Why did he kill it? Would he ever make amends by helping to resurrect it? What a beautiful thing you did. Wish I were one of your neighbor kids, was always a city girl who wished she could ride, but such a klutz that when I tried, catastrophe! War averted, whew!"
DH went through a depression and a 'midlife crisis' some years ago in which he decided to blame all his unhappiness at being stuck in an office and our financial problems on me and my horses. The arguments were epic. He started treated me very coldly in an attempt to make me leave. He started looking around for a new partner and that was the last straw for me. I decided to move back to USA and find a hot cowboy! So I moved out, re-homed horses, but didn't have the money to leave NZ with my dependent daughter, so got a third job and started saving. I moved back in but kicked him out...Then eventually he realised what an @ss he was being and wanted to get back together. So we changed other aspects of our life and started doing bees so we could get out of the office slavery. He now knows that I won't put up with Chit so he is taking me a bit more seriously. And he realised that the financial problems weren't caused by my horses but by other factors not in our control. I went back to university with the money from my third job (the preschool manager) and earned my degree so that I could get a better job if I do leave ever. Just a safety net. Then I used the rest of the money to buy Daisy Duke, my van so I could live in it cheaply if I need to leave again and I can pull my horse float with it... So that is my story, minus the guns, girls and gory details (lol) Between studying and working three jobs, I didn't have any spare time to run a riding club, plus I had re-homed many of the ponies with the children who had been riding them.
Lanette, Karen and other Sisters, yes that riding whip comes in handy and I have threatened to use it on those Lazy @ss's who won't shut the gate. In fact, I started putting my bicycle cable lock on the gate so they couldn't get in. I lost my rag at them more than once. The annoying thing is they all have sheep and cattle and wouldn't dream of leaving their own gates open. Men! Most of them respect my rule now, but I have to constantly reinforce it and remind them or they get slack.
Right now, things are still very tense here and I have been sleeping upstairs. We had a cyclone come through here last night and the power was off. Had to put the bee suit on and go replace lids on hives that were blown off in the Crazy Wind. Wendy5 -
