Will they hate me if I do the "get fitted for shoes" thing, but then want to buy online? Does that make me an *kitten*?
I buy if I can when I get fitted and will price shop the next pair. I give the running store a shot second time around, but am not tied to them.
Last pair I bought the cheapest was SportChek. Online was $25 more.
This is what I do. I'm ready for a new pair (just completed 400 miles on my shoes last night) and because the shoe I usually wear has been discontinued for a while now, I need to get back to the running store.
Ok. Rationally I know this is the right thing to do. Ok. To the store it is.
Yeah, I do the same...
I need to get trail shoes and I'm at 300+ miles on my road shoes, so i can at least get my trail shoes in store and then have a sense of what my other road shoes options are. I love the Nimbus, but kind of want to try something different. I like the cushioning, but want less drop.
I am actually looking at ordering the Altras Long Peak 3.5 with their 0mm drop for my first set of trail shoes. I just wish I could find them someplace in town to try on.
That's the shoe I'm thinking of as well. I tried them on in an REI and I'm half tempted just to get them. Very comfy. I have wide feet, and there's definitely the room I need. Bonus: I can get them in purple!
How different is getting fitted for a road shoe vs. a trail shoe ?
I do not think there is. I emailed them, and they told me the Long Peak 3.5 was about as wide as a 2E, but runs small so get a half size up. So I might just order them from Amazon (who offers free returns if they do not fit) and hope for the best.0 -
@MNLittleFinn Did you say you had the Long Peak 3.5? How well you think they will do on the 50k race I am looking at?0

Well, i have the 3.0, but from what ive read, there weren't huge changrs made. I'm bringing at least 2 pairs to my april race and will probably be wearing one pair to my race in 3 weeks, so I'd have to say I think they'd do well. I have the superior too, but the Loan Peak is sturdier and has more cushion. I'll probably be switching to all Loan Peak, as money allows
The Superior would be a faster shoe. I wore those for the first 42 miles of my October race. So they arent bad either.0 -

I might just order them soon. Roll the dice and see how they go. I have the powerline trail by my house that I have been wanting to run - just need to buy more of that extra deadly bug spray first, I am like filet mignon to the various bloodsuckers out there.0 -
03.01-5k Total-5k Goal-80k
First run of the month. Was running a bit late so opted for a 5k fartlek. Looking back, probably wasn't the smartest thing to do first thing in the morning... By the time I was in the groove home was only 1k away
Races in the foreseeable future:
03.18 HM Chengdu8 -

I just need to get final signing to go live with sponsorship three and my season will be transparent in its gearing/funding. Legs are nearly 100% after the shenanigans in early February so I'll be conservative and put in for 400km.
The Speed is so fast that its kind of crazy to me. I cranked out 5km running sub 4 minute kms on what me and my HR monitor took as moderate exertion. Only difference is the shoes . If any of you shoe addicts are interested in trying Salming btw my friends and family discount code is MCBRIDE20
@JessicaMcB Thanks for the Shoe XXX. So I don't see any retail presence for them in AB.
Do they have a hidden store-retailer that's not advertised? or are they strictly on-line?
I have a hard time buying a new shoe ( new to me ) on-line with out being able to take them for a test-compatibility run. The Speed 5 and Trail T3 look interesting, just not sure the Toe Box is wide enough.0 -
Still new to running as I’m only 7 weeks into C25K but I’ve found a love for it. Started running three days a week in January, started running daily towards the end of February. Running is becoming me. I ran 33 miles in February. My goal is to double that and meet this NRC goal of 62 miles.

I'm in for 45 miles. I failed last month due to flu but hoping to be well enough by the weekend to get out running again.5

@NikolaosKey - welcome back to the world of running!
@girlinahat - don't give up that marathon area so easily! It may just be a bit further out in the future once they get your thyroid under control! It can still happen, you can still make it happen!
@JessicaMcB - love the colors of those shoes. I too wish they had a location I could try them on like @juliet3455. Maybe though I will just give them a try though when I need a new pair assuming they have a decent return policy if they don't work out.
@fitoverfortymom and @PastorVincent - I have a love hate relationship with Altra shoes... Not many stores carry them and those that do like REI don't carry the less cushiony ones I would want. I have bought them online and every time the sizing has been off. I do love my Skoras - they are also zero drop and more minimalist but have a great wide toe box. They were unavailable for about a year but are back in business now. You can only get them online though too.
@7lenny7 - I did not see that my post was edited... hmmm I don't think I said anything bad but will have to go back and take a look now. Love that you went to a car wash to rinse off your shoes! Brilliant idea!! Socks in the kitchen sink - not so brilliant
@Teresa502, @rheddmobile and @PastorVincent - I just ordered a pair of lock laces and a pair of the Xtenex laces that @_nikkiwolf_ recommended. They should arrive tomorrow and I am hoping they will help with my toes/forefoot falling asleep
@rheddmobile - I only use the Neutrogena sport spray. I am very fair skinned (red head) and I need to use it all the time when I am outside, not just for running. It works great and doesn't feel gross even when I sweat a lot which is most of the time.
@sarahthes - That weather could make it ugly to get to the race and 'fun' to run in all that snow...
Welcome Newbies to our crazy running group!6 -

Hoping to run 3OK in March, up coming race in April.7

I'm going to shoot for 100 miles this month (measuring in km). I'd also love to get a 5k PR this month, so I'm training accordingly. Today's "blast up the big hill in kilometer 5 of a 6.5k run" was part of that.
Upcoming races:
3/4 Bieg Tropem Wilczym, 5889m
3/17 CityTrail 5k (Lublin), then work all afternoon, then drive to Warsaw
3/18 CityTrail 5k (Warsaw)
4/8 Lublin 10k
5/13 Lublin Marathon
I was thinking today about when I started running (coming up on 2 years ago). I kept hearing people talk about the "gift of running" or the "joy of running", and could not relate at all. It was really hard and I was not enjoying it, but had told myself I would finish the c25k plan and would then decide what I wanted to do. It literally took a solid month before I felt the first fleeting little whiff of something that I thought might be this mysterious and elusive gift. And then it was gone. But then a couple days later I felt it again. So I kept running, even after I met my goal of running 5k without stopping. I don't know when exactly it happened, but at some point, yes, I totally understood what they were talking about. I am SO GLAD I didn't quit in those first few months. So if you are just getting started, yes we might seem a little crazy, but stick with it - you'll soon understand too!12 -

Well said! It's true, stick with it and be patient with progress and you'll be so proud of yourself.
I think new runners will find a new confidence in themselves. Get out there and accomplish, even the smallest goal and you'll find a hidden part of you.
Starting small is still starting. Find you. You're out there, stronger, slimmer, and smarter.9 -

I'm about to start week 6 of C25K so this really resonates with me. Last week I had my first moment where I felt it. The session started out feeling ugh but on my last run interval I just hit a stride where my legs seemed to be moving all on their own, my breathing felt good and I was just ... running. It was awesome. I can't wait until that becomes a more regular feeling!10 -
I finished week 2 of C25K yesterday, but that doesn't count for March, so I'm starting the month with a rest day. No worries though, I definitely don't want to rush anything and hurt myself. It's amazing how far out of shape you can get in 6 months. I'm glad I was at least able to keep my step count around 10k a day. It does seem easier having completed the whole program the end of last August, but it's still like starting all over in a lot of ways.
Sometimes life just gets in the way. I'm going to try real hard not to let life get in the way of my physical training so much in the future - and that's probably the toughest goal I have (as it probably is for a lot of people).9 -
Hi,
Im new here.
Gonna use this as part of an ultimate goal of moving 3150 miles to accomplish weight loss.
March countdown will be 93 miles

I'm thinking 55 miles for my March goal
Upcoming Races:
3/17/18 USO 10 Mile Race at Ft Campbell
4/28/18 Brown Deer 10k
6/10/18 Manitowoc Half Marathon
8/18/18 Madison Mini Half Marathon
9/16/18 North Face Endurance 10k6 -
Hi everyone. I'm new to the group this month. I've ran before, but I haven't in a LONG time, so I'm doing a couch to 5k program. My goal is 25 miles this month. Anyone have any suggestions for knee pain? I've been dealing with that since starting my program. I guess my knees struggle with the impact as I get older. I am stretching after my run, doing warm up and cool down. Nice to meet everyone!9

I was off for 6-8 months and made my return in the heat of summer. It was hard. I think the biggest challenge for me, was keeping it in my mind that I shouldn't expect to pick up where I left off from. I wanted to see progress overnight. Truthfully, it took 2-3 months before I felt like I was getting anywhere. With the return to running, I learned how to focus on nutrition and form. I actually felt I was doing better than where I left off in some regards.
You're right life does get in the way. I always want to carve out 3 hours to myself, run, recover (eat), maybe drive to a nicer trail, lay around, brag to the group about what I learned/conqured/hurt... But I've also learned to be okay with a 30 minute run at lunchtime. It had even become a challenge, how far can I go now, how fast can I do that first mile. I really like to do an hour plus run walk. Somedays I gotta let that go. Maybe that's just life offering me balance.
Good luck!6 -
