3/2 = 2 slow miles with the dog
3/3 = rest day
3/4 = 13 miles
Ran the Alamo 1/2 marathon in San Antonio this morning. In my quest to run a sub-two hour half marathon, I started out WAY to fast. I hit a wall at mile 7 and had to slow down. In part due to the "balmy" 69 degrees F with 95% humidity (got to love Texas weather). The race organizers also had the 5K, 10K, 1/2, and full marathon starting at the exact same time in the same corral. It was crazy getting out the gate!
I have this goal of running a sub-two hour marathon, however, the closest I have gotten is at a Halloween race -- 2hrs: 6 min. I was really excited & frustrated when the finish line clock said 2hrs: 1min: 53sec. I was so close!.....or so I thought. I looked down at my running watch and saw the course was only 12.7 miles. I asked around and pretty much everyone got the same mileage. I traveled into town the day before with a lady who was pacing the event - she was PISSED. Not only is that a lot of distance to be off (on a "certified" course), but the miles were not marked after mile 6. All the pacers missed the mark.
Oh well. Other than that it was a good race. Lots of good post race food and music. I will get that sub-two 1/2 marathon one day...hopefully
March Goal Miles = 150 / 15 miles Completed14 -
@polskagirl01 running clothes under your church clothes?!?! That hilarious! (and awesome!). Congrats on the race. It sounds like a worthy cause.
Haha, so black running tights look pretty much like those leggings that are in style right now, especially when paired with high-heeled dressy black boots (to hide running socks!). Black long-sleeved running shirt had the sporty design hidden underneath a short-sleeved dress. All I had to do was switch the dress for the race shirt as an outer layer and change shoes!10 -
@sarahthes Good job finishing what sounds like a very challenging race!1
-
@amymoreorless Good race despite the problems! How frustrating!
@sarahthes Congrats on pushing through to the finish!
@polskagirl01 Congrats on mastering those hills. I need to work on that myself!
So today I finally got to preview the course for my 50K on March 24, and it is going to be a bear! I only did 14 miles and that alone had over 2000 ft of elevation gain (and loss) and it was crazy muddy as well in a lot of places. I had hoped to do another 8 miles (the final abbreviated loop for the course) but my hamstring was complaining and I didn't want to push it this close to race day, particularly after pushing it with the fast 10K yesterday as well. I think my speed was almost exactly half what it was yesterday! Good to know what to expect at least, though it is making me really nervous that I was ready to call it around half the race distance. I think I am going to duct tape my shoes to my feet for the race.

I did not run today, still trying to figure out how to best incorporate the cross-training and the new running schedule with the gym changeover. Today I had to break down and do some major cleaning I've been terrible about keeping up with, so that and being still tired and sore made me choose another rest day. Probably need to modify my goals for the month but we'll see.
Oh, I found out I didn't get into the NYC marathon, so that is out of the possibilities for first marathon this year. Not surprising of course, but it would have been cool to do on my birthday.
Wow, @hjeppley, sounds like a tough course. Good call to cut it short if your hamstring was bothering you. Good luck preparing for the race later this month. Hey - fellow 50th birthday-er in the fall! Your goal is impressive.
@amymoreorless congratulations on your half marathon. I'm sorry there were problems with the course. So frustrating. You will get your sub 2 hours!!
@sarahthes way to power through your race after being ill and then rolling an ankle! I hope your ankle will be good as new soon. Glad for you that is done - you are strong to get through it.
@RespectTheKitty great job getting a nice run in outdoors. Glad to see you getting back to it.
@polskagirl01 congrats on your race! Way to be prepared to quick change like superman, and then knock it out on those hills! Well done with almost getting a PR on a tough hilly course.
@ddmom0811 don't blame you for turning around in that wind. Some days the torture to fun ratio is way too high, and you are still a bad *kitten*.
@oprhia as always your pictures are so pretty, I want to run there too. Glad you had a good HM run.
@juliet3455 always impressed by your running in those elements. Sounds like you were well prepared and had a good run. Good advice about being careful with the March weather elements. I am thinking about where all this heavy wet snow is going to go in a (hopefully) short while, and it's going to be messy with potentially a lot of flooding.
@7lenny7 interesting shoes! Running in slippers, huh?
@HRKinchen congrats on your NOLA race! Awesome first non-stop 5k!!
@_nikkiwolf_ yes, similar conditions! Glad I didn't run on icy steps though! Great job powering through 4 hours of running in all of that.
@ereck44 I think running and yoga did help some with the soreness. Still feeling it but maybe not as bad. Felt fine during the run though, except for the steepest hills.
@rheddmobile sorry about your cancelled race. Glad an easy run was a better call for you anyway.
Sorry to miss anyone - congrats to those who race, and great job to those who got out there in the elements.8 -
March Running Totals (miles)
3/1 – 5.57 easy
3/2 – rest day
3/3 – 16.09 paced run
3/4 – 7.22 easy with hills
March running total to date – 28.88
Nominal challenge goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Build base. Work toward being able to run 26.2 miles by Patriots' Day.
Today's notes – Nice routine run this afternoon. Went out in the heat of the day, at 34º F (+1º C) with 15 mph wind, but some rare March sunshine. Ran a familiar route with hills, felt pretty good, and was focused more on how slow should I run for training than on how much I hurt. When I got to about mile 5, it occurred to me that I am no longer playing the mental "what-if" games for the contingency of not being able to finish a run; instead, I'm reminding myself not to add distance because I don't want to ramp up the weekly mileage too fast.
The idea this week is to run today, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday about the same amount as last week, before attempting 18 miles of hills on Saturday. Increasing the weekly distance by only 2 or 3 miles seems appropriate given the terrain for next Saturday's long run will be more challenging that it was for yesterday's 16 miles.

I got up early this morning so I could run before church. It was a nice run, but it was cloudy and very misty. It looks a lot nicer now, but it is very windy so I am glad I ran early instead of waiting.
I'm on my phone so I can't tag everyone, but congrats to all who raced this weekend!
11 -
Excellent racing, all! Hard to tag everyone on mobile, but a few comments...
@amymoreorless - How frustrating about the distance! Wonder how that can happen on a "certified" course? Good racing, though. You'll get your sub-2!
@sarahthes - Way to power through! Hope your ankle is feeling better soon!
@polskagirl01 - Love that wardrobe change! I've gotta try that one day.4 -

Nice 2-mile run on the TM tonight. I'm up to 4.3mph as my standard "easy" speed, which feels great! I think my breathing has been a big part of what's been holding me back on speed. I very seldom ache in my legs, but frequently have felt my HR getting up too high and sometimes suffered side stitches (almost always on my right, which might also indicate a form issue, huh?). Had a little case of side stitches develop during my race yesterday and again during my run tonight, but in both cases, when I focused on taking in more air and ensuring I was striding evenly, the stitches quickly went away and, tonight at least, the rest of the run was easy peasy. It was a great feeling to finish my run tonight knowing there was more in the tank!
MTD: 7.88/45

Hi. Just started the 2nd week of C25K. I am really enjoying it. I have set my goal for 40 km this month. I am amazed at how much better I feel already and how much easier it is to run after losing weight.
Not sure why my ticker says 50 and I have tried to change it lol. Maybe I will try for it10 -

Tickers are always slow to update to changes. That comes up often in these threads. As long as you set all the things right, it will eventually catch up.

I’m in. I’ve been trying to get into running and I think this will help motivate me!

@7lenny7 Those look like they could be good Deck Shoes for sailing, if they don't work for running.
@sarahthes Which of the River Valley parks did they do the event in?
Always love running in the River Valley when I am down for Business. Favorite for me is probably from Kinsmen Rec Center towards Emily Murphy along the twisty-rolling bush trail, then cut across St. Albert Trail into Hawrelak park and keep left into the trees. Following the bush trails past the Whitemud Equine Center ( watch for Horse Bombs ) and you can go south through Whitemud Creek ravine all the way to Snow Valley Ski Hill/Rainbow Valley park. It's a long haul. I have done each section but never as one big run.
@polskagirl01 Destroyer of hills. Respect
@hjeppley Taping your shoes on . Two Years ago at the Autumn Roots and Ruts race in Grande Prairie Alberta the Petite Tri-athlon Lady from our town actually had her one shoe's come off in a Muskeg Bog ( should add Swamp to the race name ) stopped dug out her shoe, cleaned it as good as possible put it back on and still finished in 2nd place. Would of had 1st if she hadn't blown a shoe.
@theshaleco Not a Mud Run Obstacle, Just a regular obstacle race up/around a Ski Hill. Some of these events are best done as part of a team, just changes the dynamics into a big fun cheering support crowd. We had 4 teams in the Heat/Wave I started in and would help out the individual athlete's at some of the more challenging obstacles; 8ft wall, Log Carry, Pail Carry ( no handle and full of sand ) etc. We built the Human Ladder at the Wall and one lady missed my shoulder and she stepped on my head instead, I didn't care just laughed.
A little short 5km with most of the Sunday Club Regulars. 10 people out so lots of different groupings. Was a nice day. More of a relaxing conversational run than a training/fitness run.
03/01 0.0 km – 0.0km – 140.0 km – YTD 128.32km
03/03 12.0 km – 12.km – 128.0 km – YTD 140.32 km Westbrook & 684
03/04 5.0 km – 17.km – 123.0 km – YTD 145.32 km Westbrook

You all are so sweet, thank you for the encouragement!
I had a bit of a scheduling dilemma as Monday is my usual long-run day, but I typically take a rest day after a race. It's a crazy week though, and today was really the only day that would work, so I made sure to make it an "easy" long run. Didn't destroy any hills and actually walked a few Goal was 24k, but my route ended up at 25.4 with a strong finish.
Found a new use for the thumb hole part of my jacket! Perfect solution to having a cold wrist. Why did I not figure this out sooner?

March 3 – 10.02 miles
March 4 – 4.00 miles
March 5 – 5.26 miles
Beautiful afternoon yesterday (sunny and 50F) so I headed to the trails of my local park. Lots of hill work. The loop is only 1 mile so I ran it one way 3 times then reversed and added in some steps at the adjacent elementary school. Met the gravel lot girls at 5:00 am this morning. Normally we do track on Mondays but the girl training for a sub 2-hour HM at Myrtle Beach got it this past weekend so we ditched the track and hit the streets.
@sarahthes – Congrats on running your race even though you felt crappy! Hope the ankle is feeling ok this morning. Beautiful picture but I get cold just looking at it!
@polskagirl01 – Love that you made time for church and running a race! Way to be creative!
@AlphaHowls – I’m in awe of your mileage!
@SkippyGirlsMom – Where are you?
PastorVincent – Did you see that Pittsburgh extended the cut-off time for the marathon? I know you were concerned that your wife had not had a lot of training opportunity.
@amymoreorless – Congrats on the Alamo HM! All those races starting at the same time is just crazy! Sounds like a nightmare.
@hjeppley – We have a race close-by that is called The Bear. It is only 5 miles but it is all up hill to the top of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. It’s during the Highland Games though so they have bagpipes playing and it is quite festive. At least you know what to expect for your 50K – love the trail through the pine trees!
@theshaleco – I’ve only done one mud obstacle 5K. It was a lot of fun especially if you can get a group of friends together to do it with you. Not one of those courses where you will get a 5K so just relax and jump in!
Congrats to everyone else who raced this weekend! I read all the reports yesterday, but that was yesterday and my feeble mind has forgotten who did what. Just know there was a lot of awesomeness going on over the weekend!
Upcoming Races:
April 7 – Cooper River Bridge Run
May 6 – Pittsburgh Half Marathon
September 7-8 – Blue Ridge Relay
7 -
March Training:
03.01.18 - Run 5 m.
03.02.18 - Run 3.1.
03.04.18 - Little Rock Marathon.
Upcoming Events:
4.07.18 - Yakima River Marathon
5.06.18 - Flying Pig Marathon
March Goal:
More Dedicated.7 -
@Teresa502 here I am. I have been fighting to get passed whatever it was that made me sick. I'm still coughing but finally the daily sick to the stomach feeling is gone (it was like 3 weeks). My friend is a doctor and swears I had pneumonia which was going around here and one of the girls I work with had it the week before and came to work every day thank you very much. I was running one day a week with my running club and could barely make 2 miles. Hopefully I'm over the hump now since I have a HM in less than a month ugh.
Goal this month 100 miles
3/1 - 0
3/2 - 0
3/3 - 0
3/4 - 0
3/5 - 5 miles
5 of 100 miles
5 slow miles, but it was good to get past 2 miles and not be laying on the couch coughing.

@PastorVincent – Did you see that Pittsburgh extended the cut-off time for the marathon? I know you were concerned that your wife had not had a lot of training opportunity.
Yes, I did! It is huge now! It is a good thing too because she should have been at a 12:30 or so pace by now but with how far behind she is, it could be more like a 13:30 pace, which put her awful close to the original 14min cut off.
Are you running it then?2 -
@skippygirlsmom Glad you're feeling better!1
