Janet, that's terrific!2

Janetr - so pleased for your success! You have worked hard. And for your grandson! I wonder if I'll be around for Max's wedding. I would be I my 90s, but you never know!
Katla - Since my son's shock I have been giving alcohol a lot of thought. I was not a heavy drinker, but found, on the days that I did drink, that I sometimes drank a bit more than I had planned, or wanted. I read some good books on my Kindle, one is Alcohol Explained by William Porter. I have a couple more I'm reading now. This is my 7th AF day. DH is drinking his customary Pernod each night (2 units, and then he can stop), which I thought I would miss like crazy, but I'm not. In fact I am feeling very joyful about it. One thing that makes it easier is the delicious AF beers I am enjoying, plus the imitation "gins". I have just ordered an AF vermouth to try. This makes the drinking very enjoyable as I am loving the flavours. I am not a fan of sweet drinks, and I already drink loads of British tea. This drinks have that bitter hit that I like. I find myself feeling guilty for having one before 6 o'clock. They feel like a treat. I will probably have an occasional glass of really good wine in the future, but I am no longer interested in normal, or social, drinking. Information is POWER!
Going to do a run today. Aiming for 35 mins and see how I feel. (I always do my morning 600 calorie exercise session, this is a "bonus" ) I might press on and finish the 5k.
I looked up on a website how to calculate a good time when it's adjusted for age. A good time for 5k for a 25 year old is 25 mins. I was delighted to see that a good time for a 68 year old (me) is 44 minutes. I'm not much outside that, so something to aim at next week.
Who would have though that I should be doing this, a beginner runner at 68, who always said she couldn't run because of a dodgy knee, hips etc. Actually I find it easier than walking!
Still fiddling with my memoir, but on the last "snagging".

Hi ladies
I am still out of town for a few more days. I will be afraid to step on a scale when I return. I seem to have contracted a nasty chest cold with a very sore throat and headache. I’ve got extra blankets now from the nice front desk lady, but am still shivering. I am now officially 60 years old. I just learned today that my dearest friends mother is 67. I really don’t feel this old...
I get to go spend time with my 3 year old granddaughter tomorrow in Calgary. I have not seen her since September. I may post pictures7 -
I keep forgetting not to post smiles faces!!
Love everyone’s pictures. I miss my dogs. I will be glad to get home on Friday.

Have read up to pg 21. I will catch up again.
Trying to find a way to put up with "HER" for my son and granddaughter. SHE makes me dizzy with all the senseless chatter. I have lost it a couple times lately. It seems she does nothing but b**ch about my son and complain about everything from the time she gets in the car. I have pointed out that we are not alone in the car, Harmony is listening and that no matter what Jason is my son. I doubt he can ever make her happy no matter what he does. He works too much, sleeps too much, doesn't help enough, doesn't make enough money, is taking every Thursday to go to NA, pays too much attention to Harmony rather than her, the list goes on and on and on and on. I have tried setting boundaries but that is only a word in the dictionary to her. I don't think she hears anything anyone else says. I have put it to her that even though I am not going to a job I still have things I need to do.
Still trying to figure out my next best move. I dropped off a form for the doctor, requested an ROE from work and will fill in my EI application tomorrow. Follow up Doc appointment on the 19th.
Another of DD's paintings has sold. She was very surprised as it was one of the higher priced ones. I was not as it is stunningly gorgeous.
Hoping for a bit of a thaw this week.

Hi Sisters, well I have been to the tramping club meeting and I have booked myself onto the next hike, which is in two days time, Saturday. It is to the "Mangaweka Boulders" which is some big round rocks apparently and if the weather is warm enough we can swim in the river when we get there. Should be fun. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and a day out with my daughter, so heading to bed now. Wendy

Right there with you, Machka. I look at the spring ahead of me, and my mind just boggles at how it will all happen. But it will. Nonetheless, has me highly distractable at the moment, continually trying to remember what I was doing...

Happy belated birthday Laura!

Happy birthday to all the birthday girls! Getting older doesn't always suck. I've never been happier or healthier.
Just printed out 32 pages of my memoir for DH to read. Partly for editing and partly to see what someone else makes of it. Nervous.
Jessamy decided she wanted Nike vouchers for her birthday - Phew! - so I've ordered that. Delighted to get her something for her running, which she adores.
Salmon for dinner tonight, rubbed in lemon and smoke drops, in a Chipotle paste, with mushy peas, and asparagus. New potatoes for DH.

Morning Ladies~
snowing lightly now ,but will get heavier as the day goes on... working 9-2 today then will be home with my pup, and Dan staying overnight... going to hop in the shower in a few minutes...
Happy Birthday to all of you celebrating... mine is at the end of June...5 -
Thanks ladies for your kind words. My 24 year old grandson was sexually abused by an older neighbor kid from the time he was seven. By the time he was a teenager he could not deal with the "guilt and shame" and no amount of counseling was getting through to him trying to assure him he was not to blame. He got into drugs early on to numb the pain. He's been in and out of drug rehab since he was 16. We can only hope and believe that this time is forever. He's been clean now for almost two years.
My daughter was 16 when she got pregnant with him. I was 43 when he was born and pretty much raised him his first four years. They lived with me of course. His birth father was killed in a car accident when grandson was six, he never knew him. Life is not easy nor fair, we all have our own demons to deal with. I pray he has made peace with his.

Thank you Janetr for sharing that. I am sending him good thoughts.
I'm clearing stuff out and found this HUGE pot I got as a wedding present from my Glasgow friend in 1970. I haven't used it in years as I don't give big parties any more. I was going to give it to the charity shop, but my cleaner said she would love it. Also gave her a pinny and an address book. Here she is.
So happy for it to go to a good home.

Sharon ... this is not a good situation ... we had a family member who did the same thing ... note the past tense "had." The relationship ended badly and left repercussions that continue to this day. I often wonder if we had been more persistent in showing our loved one how toxic his girlfriend/then wife was if it would have changed things. Probably not, but how I wish we had tried harder. Hugs to you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ALL of OUR MARCH LADIES!5 -
janet you inspire me. Would love a video of that first dance with your Grandson at his wedding.
Heather wish I had been around when that pot left your cupboard but glad it found a good home.
"Tired of being tired" was the phrase that got me here, to maintenance weight and off bp meds....
Small tiny actions and choices everyday, keep me going. I have a calendar where I mark hitting certain goals. I enjoy marking off my successes and looking back at the month as a big picture. Also, journaling everyday about the simplest of things, food, exercise, spending/not spending, I even note whether I am staying in a positive mindset, paying attn to these actions have helped me tremendously. and yes, checking in with you all is the icing on the cake!--or maybe I mean a side of veggies and salad

Today (well yesterday and today is confirmation) I am normal weight by all commonly used measures. (BMI, waist to height ratio, waist to hip ratio). I stopped actively dieting in January hoping that my periodic 5 day Fast Mimicking diets and my regular 5:2 Intermittent fasting would carry me over into normal BMI and it looks like that strategy worked!
In the past twenty years (As an adult after age 30) at my lowest I have always hovered just in the low part of the overweight category by BMI measurements (tho I was healthy by the other two measures) so this might be the first time in two decades that I can confidently say my weight is good and healthy.
What an odd feeling this accomplishment engenders in me, tho.

I just reconnected on MFP after being away for 9 months due to injury.
I like the idea of a 50's accountability group.
I am 54 yrs old. Before my injury I had lost 90 lbs with help of MFP and exersize. I gained some of that back, but I am back now and ready to crush it.
March goals
Do my daily workouts as per schedule.
Log my food daily
Get my water in (I struggle with this one)
Stay positive in my mind
Reach out when struggling
Not to obsess on the scale (something I do too much)
Lose 5 lbs for the month

Rye - I totally identify with that feeling. IS THIS ME? I hardly know myself, but I'm pleased to meet me. Maybe you could say that to yourself in the mirror. "Hello! I'm very pleased to meet you. You are doing great! "
I've just got back from 5 mins walk, 45 mins run and 3 mins walk. I definitely ran 5k, so I'm delighted.
I did extra mat work this morning, side planks, walking planks, etc etc, but totally forgot to do my dumbbells. Duh! I think I've made up for it though.
My cleaner just told us she used to be in the army and won a case of sexual harassment against her sergeant major. A huge ordeal, but she came through. Time's Up folks.

Hula Hoop I could have sworn I saw a post from someone new to this thread asking for Hula Hoop tips last night, but this morning I can not find it! In case I did not just dream that I’ll describe my hula hoop experience, but not sure I have any useful tips.
I got my hula hoop in January. 3lb weighted 36 inch diameter. I had never (even as child) used one. I kept it up for 55 seconds the first time I tried, it was exceedingly hard work. For the next couple of weeks I never matched that 55 seconds. My approach was to try every day, maybe 3 to 5 failures then stop. If I kept trying after that I was only courting hip bruises.
Then one day the hoop stayed up for over 7 minutes in one direction and 5 minutes in the other. That was in late January. For a couple of weeks I had more successful hoop days than unsuccessful ones. Sometime in early February I stopped having failures and seemingly can now keep the hoop up as long as I choose.
The biggest help was getting myself into what I call a state of mindful inattentiveness. Or distracted attention. Paying enough attention to hooping but not too much attention. I mostly open my iPad to 1980’s music videos on YouTube and hula hoop to a kinda MTV in its video playing incarnation.
Other than that, I’d just say at the beginning, when keeping the hoop going is the struggle just try 5 times (but try Both directions) or so then stop. If it doesn’t work that day, smile and put the hoop away until the next day. One direction (counter clockwise for me) is often much easier than the other for beginners, I read. As I said, I’d guess it took me two to three weeks before it ‘clicked’ mostly.

Allergies better today. My DH was fighting the symptoms yesterday as well. The immunotherapy is helping. But yesterday’s dust levels were a 12/12. The highest they measure so was a miserable day for everyone.
On dog food: I feed my fur babies ProPlan dry shredded for little dogs dry food. I add a container of Little Cesar’s split between 3 dishes wet food more as a treat. They also get leftovers from what we eat as treats, Greenies, Puperoni lean, and a chew stick from GoodTimes. One of each daily. The dry food is out all day for them. Sounds like a lot but none are overweight, one is 12 years old and the other two are both 6.
Going for my walk today. Hope I don’t meet up with any creatures. They are emerging from hibernation. We have a Kangaroo Rat trying to Nest in our car and last night smelled a skunk.

Rita: I'm sorry that your allergies are acting up. Are they pollen related? I can't imagine a big mold & mildew problem in the area where you are staying, although I suppose it is possible. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I was curious about lamb and flageolet stew so I looked it up online. It looks yummy. I think DH would love it. I'm not a big bean eater, but the recipes I saw look good, and the photo with green beans as a side dish won my heart.
Lisa: Your chicken salad sounds wonderful. Yay for your DH! What a nice thing to do.
Julie in Eastern NC: I know that people use Apple watches to track fitness, but I don't actually know anyone who has one. It seems like you're getting great information and encouragement. Good for you! :flowerforyou:
Joyce: I hope you feel better every day.
Lanette: I hope you get more useful information from your next allergy tests. My allergies are mostly food related although I have had nasty reactions to Scotch Broom in bloom. I see less and less of it in our area. I think they've made a point of getting rid of it. It isn't native to our area and causes a lot of allergies in people. Good luck.
Peach & Lanette: I agree with you both about the social challenges that seem to come with retirement. We had lots of sailing friends and I'm still marginally connected with them, but since DH won't/can't go on the boat we're not actively involved with them any more. It is a big loss. I have regular contact with people from yoga classes, and they're a mix of men and women, mostly 50+. The fitness club is full of retired folks in the mornings. The younger set takes evening classes. I'm making new friends at the stable and that is a blessing. You might be surprised at how many "old women" are out there riding horses and taking lessons. The vast majority of my fellow students are women 50+. I'm picturing two very active groups--4H'ers and 50+. When the cutting horse classes are offered I also see a few young males & younger women. :flowerforyou:
wgail8464: You've found a good place for support. Come back often and get to know people.
(((Barbie))) I hope the tests go well and lead to improvements in Jake's health. Sometimes different meds can make a huge difference in quality of life.
Heather: You are making great progress in regards to alcohol and are both thoughtful and mindful about it. I'm committed to change as well. I'm not as successful at cutting back as I'd like. I'm not sure I can actually succeed unless I quit altogether. I've done it before with the help of Celestial Seasoning Peppermint Tea. It is a lovely evening drink and I plan to use it as my evening relaxer.
Sharon in Lethbridge: I adore my DDIL but am not as thrilled with DSIL. Neither of them spends time complaining to me about their partners--my son & daughter. I don't know what I'd do about it if I were in your situation. If you simply say nothing in response, do you suppose she'd catch the hint? She ought to be working on her dissatisfactions by trying for compromises with your DS rather than by complaining to you. :noway:
Machka: I LOVE this: "Some call it multi-tasking, I call it doing something else while I try to remember what I was doing in the first place."
Janetr: Sending good thoughts for your DGS:
Rye: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Angie: Welcome to a great group. :flowerforyou:
We have a gorgeous and sunny morning, and I want to find a way to enjoy it. Maybe DH & I can take the dog for a walk a bit later in the day. It is too cold right now & the dog is at the groomer.
