Does that sound like a scientific argument to you?
A meter is a meter because a meter doesn't say anything about comfort or even what is traversing the meter...it is just a measure of distance.
Similarly calories are calories because a calorie doesn't say anything about satiation or nutritional value of specific foods or even what is utilizing the calorie...it is just a measure of energy.
But I heard that energy isn't even a thing... that it's just made up by people?!
Well not to blow your mind twice in one day but...meters are also just a concept made up by people.13 -

Yes, I’m a huge believer in CICO.
I also firmly believe that not every calorie is the same. The “quality of the food” does play a factor.
I’m no nutritionist, but surely we can all agree that eating 10 snickers bars is not as “healthy” as actually paying attention to what types of protein’s and other foods you eat.
I’m not saying everybody has to be so diligent as to plan out every meal to the nth degree and down to the minute detail of knowing exactly how many grams of what type of food is in the journal. I’m certainly not.
I will, however, have yogurt for breakfast. Then I’ll base lunch around whatever protein I decide I want, and the same with dinner. Pick the protein first, then the carbs/fats will fall into place. Generally when I do that the percentages follow suit.
I will look for leaner proteins....eat chicken or turkey more than beef generally...Would I rather have mashed potatoes or fries or a bun? Since I get mashed potatoes with just a little butter/salt/pepper, it’s generally the safer bet - or baked potato even.
It almost becomes a case of “choose your doom”. LOL22 -

i'd argue from a macronutritents profile - 10 snickers is likely better than 10lbs of broccoli...
10lbs of broccoli = approx 4500g of broccoli = roughly 102servings of 1/2 chopped...
102 servings = 1534cal (15cal/serving) = 1150cal of carbs (3g per serving) and 383cal protein (1g per serving)
compared to 10 snickers bars:
1 snickers bar = 250cal/12g fat/33g carbs/4g protein
10 bars = 2500cal/120g fat/330g carbs/40g protein
i mean, yeah, i would be in a sugar coma...but the snickers would be the better choice in the long run for the make-up...

Would you settle for a pound and a half of broccoli, and a Snickers bar? Totals to 481 calories, 23.2g protein, 14.5g fat, 78.2g carb, 18.7g fiber, and some useful micros. Not a terrible lunch nutritionally (I've seen many worse frozen microwave meals), and reasonably filling.

If it were an option, heck yes! Eating either one of them in isolation would be grim. I like my odds with the Snickers, however, if I were stranded on an island.5 -

I think we can all agree that eating 10 grilled chicken breasts is not as "healthy" as eating a balanced meal that might end in a snickers bar for a treat.

IKR? It's weird because I had no idea CICO was short for "Eat Nothing But One Specific Junk Food". I've been doing it wrong, I guess
Maybe it’s mistaken as an acronym for “Candy In, Candy Only”.
But is a candy a candy? I mean, are all candies created equal? Is an Almond Joy harder to digest than a Mounds? Do you get more nutrition from homemade gummy bears, so your body doesn't crave more? I feel like science just isn't sure!
So the real question is, when are we starting the sugar free gummi bear cleanse challenge.
Oooo! Ooooo! I'm in!!

There was a book written about this issue that goes through a lot of science.
"Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health" https://www.amazon.com/Good-Calories-Bad-Controversial-Science/dp/1400033462
Some may say that CICO is settled science and some say it is not - there are arguments to be made on both sides and I think its worth people exploring the issues and arguments.
Gary Taubes is the author, so, no. Midnight train to Wooville.
I mean, I guess you could interpret "goes through a lot of science" in more than one way. Taubes goes through science kind of like how the Kool-Aid Man goes through walls.
Where's that awesome button when you need it?8 -
