Basic round number is that unless you are very thin you burn apx 100 cals per mile no matter your speed.
As you lose weight you can keep the burn up by using more arms or lifting knees a bit higher
I am 180lbs lighter than I used to be. I used to burn a lot more than 100 Cal/mile when I was 350lbs, closer to 200 than 100. I average about 125 Cal/mile without an incline now.5 -
157 pounds BMI ~24 maybe 65 calories per mile at 4+ mph1

I really like the "since you're so small" comments. It's usually related to SUP or kayak. I am just under 5'8", so getting skinny I am a smaller than average guy and can look at SUPs targeted at women paddlers.8 -
That you lose in some weird places. I noticed the other day that my armpits had hollowed out. It was a bit of a wtf moment.25

That you have to smile politely with friends who invite you for dinner, summer salad sitting in their garden, and then give you a chinese and when you only have small portions look at you as if you are being rude.12

It’s still a good basic rule of thumb for most people.
I’ve seen the wackiest numbers come from technology gadgets.
Steps can be the most random.
I trust true distance and weight.

OK, for me it says 727 (actually a little less since I weigh under 160) for 8 miles at 4 mph, which takes two hours. But being awake for two hours burns about 150, which mfp has already calculated into my base. So should I actually log 577 ? I generally log less than that. I usually log about 400. A few days back, I accepted mmw's fantasy number of 887 as I have been sliding a little lower. I do some voodoo with exercise numbers to try to keep my weight stable.1 -

If the walking is extra to what your activity level is set at then don't subtract out anything. aka if you are sedentary and go for you 8 miles walk then you would add all the calories. If you are set at active and the 8 miles walk is additional to your normal activities that puts your setting at active you still would add all the calories in.
That being said, some people like to not eat all their exercise calories back or give themselves a little buffer when logging exercise. However it is good to know your starting point and if you are gaining or losing too fast or plateauing to adjust accordingly.2 -
i have raised 3 boys and when they got to adult male Small (28-30) size it was difficult to find shorts, pants, and belts at places like $-$$ OLD NAVY, Sears & Target, etc. i found that $$-$$$ dept stores usually had more quantities of normal sizes...zappos (online) is fantastic* also, a new quantum theory- if you cant find it on amazon, it doesnt exist lol12

@OHammykins I think we can think both at once, and that is perfectly acceptable. "Super hot!! Kinda Squishy..." Is my inner monologue most days, lol. The weight is falling off my butt and thighs at a faster rate then my tummy, so sometimes it looks bad to me. But I know overall I'm looking better. When I have those negative thoughts I like to think of myself as "Under Construction", or "Work in Progress".Sometimes like with many other things in life, it can look worse before it gets better. Also, if you look in the mirror and see progress, I'm willing to bet that is the image other people see.21

My chest and butt went first but eventually my stomach caught up. I think I’m in the same cycle again at the moment but not freaking out as bad as I know it’ll balance out ( or at least I really hope it will).10

I mentioned this a while back on another thread...
"Phantom gut syndrome" - I get it less now as I am finally starting to adjust to this size as my new normal after about 4 months. Anyway, when I would eat something that made be feel bloated/distended, I would put my hand where it seemed like I felt the discomfort and it would be a few inches in front of my stomach.20 -

I thought something was wrong with my wrists...nope, just BOTH bones from my arm are now visible. Never seen that on me before.12 -

I noticed that too and wondered what had happened. It's the strangest thing!9 -
That, at 5'5, I am able to feel at once tiny and really tall. I look in the mirror and just see my arms and legs! I feel so aware of them swinging around.20

@Crafty_camper123 I know what you mean. I'm losing weight from my legs, arms and bum faster than my stomach so by comparison my stomach looks huge! Thank goodness for taking measurements - At least I can see progress there.

It's great to lose the weight, but there can be some chaffing from the loose skin12

Yes! I hit a bit of an emotional road block a few weeks ago I when I realized going back to the size I was 10 years ago would not mean looking the way I did 10 years ago. Sounds obvious, but somehow that just never clicked...(still have a long way to go, but I am already starting to see the signs)
It was very demotivating, but I took some me time, added more fruits to my meal plan, and bought enough bottles of body cream and face masks to make my husbands eye brows go up and his mouth close. lol
It still makes me a little sad, but it is part of life regardless of size. And I know I am far better off active and healthy than over weight with large breasts and smooth skin.

For MFP logging, I use the very lowest basic daily calorie goal of 1200 cals/day.
Doing that, I never have to worry about the math involved in adjusting calories for hours used.
I figure the elevated burn you get for an hour or two after excercise covers it.
I also don’t eat my exercise cals. I stay as close to 1200 as possible.
If I have good exercise, I don’t have to do major diet surgery like I do on non exercise days.
The 100 cals per mile is just a round figure to do quik math if you’re not necessaarily logging.4 -
I lost weight on my forehead?! Last time I wore this particular baseball cap was a couple of months ago, it is a stretch fit and I have a big head, when i pulled it fully onto my head I used to get a line on my forehead as it was tight.
I put that same baseball cap on last night and there is a good 5mm gap to me forehead, its completely loose.
Why wont my belly dissapear but my forehead will!?39 -

I did that with 1500 and then 1600 while I was losing (technically, I guess I am losing again now; but just from top of range back to mid range). I am trying to be more accurate now to limit fluctuations.
Back on the main topic, I was a little disappointed in my physique at first. I didn't realize that even at times I felt like I was pretty fit there was a layer of fat over most of my muscles. My pecs and biceps are smaller but I am stronger and when I flex, the muscles are almost right under the skin and tendons stand out more prominently. When I was over 200 a lot (and over 220 at times), I thought 175-180 was my healthy weight and best physique. Now I am maintaining at 20 pounds below that and thinking about moving my range down another 5 or 10 pounds. It turns out I didn't know what healthy actually looks like on me.14 -
You might become obsessed with looking at yourself in the mirror trying to see progress!
This summer I'm in sleeveless tops for the first time in years and I love glancing at my arms in the mirror to see how they're changing!21 -
I keep accidentally noticing things on my body that make me go “oh my god! Skinny people have that!” Like I saw my hamstring tendon for the first time in probably 6 years yesterday!24

I'm down +/-20 pounds, 5 to ultimate goal remains.
A big one I want to mention is that we like to have parties at our home and sometimes do shots with our guest. I CAN NO LONGER do the number of shots I was able to before without either: 1. Passing out or 2. Barfing. I have to be very careful to remember to eat or it's awful for me. I'm talking that my limit is about 2 drinks where my friends can do 2 more than that. I've started making it known that I can't do every toast, dare, shot reason, taste test, etc. Seriously!
Ordering clothes online is a PITA because I truly don't know what size I am. For years I was pretty much a size M. Now if I order a S I'm taking a chance and need to most likely be an XS. It seem strange - I wasn't even an XS in high school (I was a S/M depending).
Don't take offense in the South when a woman calls you "skinny" or "skinny minny" or if your sister's boyfriend tells you you look like you could blow away in the wind. I've worked hard, I'm not skinny, but thank you for noticing how much I care about myself!
When your husband asks "did you workout today?" If you say "no, why?" and then the response is "you're kinda cranky today." HA!! OMG!

I never thought 20 pounds would make my feet shrink .5 size. I'm usually a standard 7. The shoes I've worn for about 2 years are now too big. It's not my "narrow ankles!"
Items you start to purchase for $20 change from jewelry or cute hats to yoga mats, headbands, interval timers, moisture wicking socks, low impact sport bras, yoga bands, exercise balls, yoga blocks .... omg my spare bedroom is a gym equipment locker!!
You catch guys staring again. I've been married 17 years. In the past year I've caught at least 3 guys staring. I'll take that, thanks!
The scale becomes a gauge, not the end all be all. You learn the patterns. You don't cry over a seemingly sudden 2 pound upswing b/c you know you splurged the day before. You repeat the mantra that "muscle is growing, fat is shrinking, I'm becoming more fit. I can weigh more and look better and that's ok!"
You start researching on how to pose to best show your gains and practice in the mirror.
You eat ALL the time. ALL THE TIME. People are surprised at how much you eat. -they jealous!-
