Thought on diet sodas

What do you think of diet sodas? Would it affect a person’s weight loss? I know it’s zero calories but a lot if research says that it leads to weight increase but then again I believe in calories in and calories out. Just want to hear what other people think

I quit smoking a couple of years ago. They are going to have to pull my Dt. Dr. Pepper from my cold dead hands though! Down +50.15

I think it's USEFUL if anything for weight loss when subbing out for regular pop since it has 0 calories. It tends to make me bloat, so I limit my diet soda (or carbonated water, Zevia, or whatever non-water drink I may consume) to one or two throughout the day.10

It doesn't lead to weight increase, but its consumption is correlated with a higher weight. Why? Because people with a higher weight are more likely to be dieting and using diet drinks. It has little to do with the effect of soda itself if you're accounting for the calories in your food and not just consuming more of it because you had a diet soda.
Some people feel hungrier when they drink diet drinks others don't (I find it helps me feel full), but it's about calories in the end.17 -
I prefer unflavored carbonated water, the syrupy thing in pop just makes me want to drink more of it. It doesn't satisfy me in anyway. As where the bubbly action in water with no after taste really quenches my thirst. I don't know, if its zero calories so how can it make you gain weight? But what's in it? I don't know, I don't like pop enough to care or research it. Even full regular pop, except Orange Crush, doesn't really appeal to me. The Mexican imported coke in the glass bottle is pretty good, but once again doesn't quench my thirst. Its makes me want to drink more.0

No lie drink about 2-4 liters of artificial sweetened beverages a day. Whether it be diet soda or crystal light. Just make sure you take care of your teeth! That’s the only real negative.....11

Artificial sweeteners trick your body’s natural insulin to believe it’s the real deal, but it’s not and many times from what I’ve heard is it makes you crave more sugar, sweets, and can have lasting side effects to your health. I am not a Doctor or expert, but would most definitely do your research. I am not a huge soda drinker, so it’s not something I put a lot of effort into knowing about, but some research I’ve done has kept me mindful of the corn syrup junk and artificial ingredients in my food and drinks.45

All things being equal (and they never are), I'll continue to drink an occasional Diet Coke or two... but having it in moderation, like most things in life, is probably prudent.8 -

This has been debunked. There is nothing wrong with artificial sweeteners. You’re probably doing more harm breathing the air outside than you are ingesting them17 -
I think they taste of sadness, I wish they would use something else to sweeten them.3

I drink them because the carbonation helps me feel full so I don't snack all the time, and I missed drinking soda pop. 0-15 calories a day is way better than 510 calories a day.0

I hate coffee and don't drink much black tea. Diet cola is my primary caffeine source and I tend to be a night owl and an early riser, so I sort of need my caffeine.1

Any "research" you can find saying that diet sodas affect weight loss/lead to weight gain are speaking of correlation, not causation. I see a lot of fat people exercising, but that doesn't mean that exercising makes people fat. That's the difference between correlation and causation.
Diet soda is a zero calorie (or nearly so) beverage - just like water, tea, black coffee, etc. Yet I don't see people claiming that water, black coffee or tea makes you gain weight. It's simply demonization and fearmongering about diet soda, none of which has any scientific basis. A zero calorie substance cannot make you gain weight.9 -

I have all the research I need right here: 100 pounds down while drinking diet soda. My microbiome didn't get the memo because it's working wonderfully, not causing me to stop losing weight and all my health markers improved.
A side note: there are many types of artificial sweeteners. If they do have an impact on the microbiome it would depend on how they're metabolized/excreted. Everything you consume affects gut microbiome, so I wouldn't be surprised. Lumping all sweeteners under one sweeping generalization and then blowing the results up to catastrophic proportions isn't wise.25 -

I've lost 200lbs and drink several coke zeros a day. Never had it hurt my weight loss. It's helped curve my carbonation and caffeine craving by giving me a low/no calorie option.
My health markers are the best they have ever been in my 35 years on the earth. I'm healthy in every sense of the word.

I would suggest that you read the link I posted in the comment above yours. It contains lots of research, collected by a biochemist who is a member here, that states otherwise.
I lost 65 pounds drinking 1-2 cans of diet soda a day. No problems whatsoever.15 -

And this is why seeing a registered dietician is so much better than getting diet advice from a personal trainer or nutritionist. More reliable advice will come from someone with a university qualification who has a much greater level of understanding than someone that can get their certificate online in less than a year.

I find that diet soda satisfies me when nothing else will...when I'm feeling snacky in the evening and want to raid the fridge for ice cream or nuts. A diet soda or a zero calorie sparkling water to sip on kills the cravings for me and gives me something to do with my mouth besides eat. Diet soda has saved me many, many calories.
I ALSO occasionally indulge in a Coke with real corn syrup. I've still lost almost 50 lbs. Soda lovers of the world, unite!13 -

There's no research that identifies a causation link between diet soda and weight gain. The worst case you have is correlation studies, but those can't identify cause. In my case, i've lost 150ish lbs drinking several non-caloric beverages daily.7 -
I personally stopped drinking them. My mother in law had severe damage done to her bladder and the dr told her it was from something in the Diet Coke. Granted, she drank it like water. Like a 12pk a day. I am not sure whether what he said to her was true or not, but it scared me enough to not want to find out. That being said, I wouldn’t be above having one on a rare occasion if I wanna as craving it.8

After bladder surgery, I was told to temporarily reduce my caffeine intake until I healed up. No mention was made of any particular beverage or whether it was diet or regular, etc. I was just told "No more than one cup of coffee or tea per day and go easy on the colas."6
