Wineglass Marathon 9/30
Made it to the gym after lunch and ran 6.5 on the treadmill. I really don’t see how some people only run on treadmills. I find them to be sooooo boring, even with a tv or podcast.3 -
@shanaber all I saw last night was deer.... but skunks and snakes actually crossed my mind as things I might not see until too late... I was also a bit nervous about getting winged by a car... anything else is just too big to worry about. If you notice my equation is if I fall and break my leg, not neck. I am much more worried about being maimed and left to suffer than actually meeting my demise.
@rheddmobile I trip over things enough while walking in daylight, that realistically I cannot get much worse ind the dark while running. In terms of visibility, I try and keep at least half of me in high vis colors, white/neon yellow, etc... I have a headlamp, but friend and I were just discussing that neither of us thought our lamps seemed as bright this year, even after fresh batteries... but we both had still used them with the assumption that even if we couldn’t see any better, maybe at least it made us more visible. Was funny we both had been thru the same thoughts separately.LaDispute57 wrote: »PastorVincent wrote: »Thanks for mentioning it, but I can not make it. But you already knew that

Today I had a running buddy... my friend has to come thru the area to get to her in laws, and she was dropping kids off for a week with the grandparents. So she stopped to run with me on her way back

June Running Update
Week 1: 26.6
Week 2: 2
MTD: 28.6
7 days of recovery for my knee meant no running until today. Could still feel some tenderness but will look to lengthen runs and balance with rest and various exercises/stretches until I can build up to more normal mileage and get prepared for Monumental marathon in early November.5 -
@RunnerGrl1982 Welcome. Your understanding about the thread is correct. But it is very informal. Just jump in to any post that you are interested in or you want to add to.2

Reading all the creatures some of u have to deal with I don't thinks I would even venture out in the daylight!4

Thanks @LaDispute57. No lie, I can see where it can get tough to keep up with all the chatter!
Hey @rheddmobile! Thanks for the welcome!
@Scott6255 Thanks for the tip. I'm just getting my feet wet here, so I'm sure as I get a bit more comfortable; I'll participate a bit more in threads.0 -
Re running at night: I got back at 10:40 a few nights ago and it wasn't full dark yet. I've seen coyotes in my neighbourhood but there are enough rabbits that they don't bother with people much. My neighbourhood is a fairly wealthy suburban area. There's a fair bit of petty crime, e.g. theft from vehicle type stuff, but that tends to be after midnight based on the security camera footage I've seen on the community Facebook page. I don't run that late.
I'm a night owl not a morning person. Morning runs are super difficult for me.1 -

@RunnerGrl1982 Loosely speaking, you get out to run about 4 times a week more than 86% of the American population. You'll fit right in here.7 -
@amymoreorless Yup, I'm in Phoenix. And this week the humidity has been super high, so no it's a "dry heat"! lately. It was 50-something this morning but had been like 80-95 during the week due to monsoons rolling through. Cloud coverage means no glowing ball of doom so that's a nice break. LOL2

@shanaber I just cleaned out the extra freezer so thankfully I do have the room and I’m on my last batch...SF Strawberry. Surprisingly I haven’t actually wanted to eat any of it. The rest of the family is in heaven, telling me their glad my education is finally paying off and that I clearly should have majored I’m baking & pastry vs culinary as I’ve made cookies, brownies and muffins along with all the ice cream. 1 July: 5.30 at 5:09 pace (race pace)
2 July: yoga
3 July: 7.01 at 5:45 pace
4 July: yoga
5 July: 12.66 at 5:50 pace (“unproductive" according to Garmin)
6 July: rest
7 July: yoga
8 July: 15.2 at 6:01 (slow and steady)
9 July: yoga
10 July: 6.0 at 6:02 pace (probably faster but I had a child on a bike in tow who kept needing a push - I certainly had to work harder) plus another 1.8km at about the same pace with similar issues getting the younger daughter to kindy.
11 July: yoga
12 July: 10.71 at 5:25 pace - when you’re short on time but you want to go long, you gotta go fast.
13 July: rest and pizza (and more pizza)
14 July: sneaky 6.7km to undo some of last night’s pizza damage followed by yoga. Great way to start a Saturday.
15 July: 16.51 at 5:55 pace. Building up to the Mt Maunganui Half on August 25.
81.89 of 150km for July4 -
Coyotes: most of them in Phoenix are scared of people. Little dogs and cats are more likely to be grabbed by a coyote. I'd be more afraid of the javelina. They will charge people.
I'm sure there's crime in my neighborhood. I've looked at maps before but it's all burglary or drug-related. There is a police station across the street from my neighborhood but it doesn't make me feel safer since they all leave the station. LOL I'm more worried when I'm downtown because I've been grabbed by a homeless man. I've had co-workers attacked by a homeless man. It happens. I just make sure I'm aware of my surroundings and am not distracted.2 -
With all those wild animals about no wonder you are all such good runners. I don't have to worry about anything, maybe the occasional fly. We don't get snakes or anything!1

Nominal July mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Build base. Work toward being able to run Wineglass in September.
Today's notes – With one thing and another, it was 88º F (31º C) and sunny when I got out to run today. The initial plan was 4 to 5 miles easy. But I was running from my home, and it quickly became apparent that 88º with sunshine feels much warmer than 88º with a lot of shade. Perhaps I should have driven to where I could run on the shady Erie Canal Trail; but by the time I thought of it, I was already out running.
Ran kind of an ad hoc route around the neighborhood. Got to a corner at 2.3 miles, and decided 3.6 miles total to get back to my driveway would be good enough. Got to my driveway, and the watch said 28:20 or so; so I ran an out and back to make it 30 minutes. Then it really was good enough, at 3.85 miles. I *could* have run longer; but I went into hypochondriac mode and decided this was recovery from yesterday's half and I didn't want to push too hard.
I did a full stretching routine, which had fallen through the cracks after yesterday's half. Came in, iced my ankles, did the self-massage the podiatrist wants me to do, and noted that the sore Achilles is no worse that it was after last Thursday's run, and perhaps slightly better. That's a decent result, and makes me think the odd Achilles sensations during the half yesterday were an effect of mild cramps on a tendon that isn't quite totally healed. Hydrate, replace electrolytes, and all is well . . . as long as I don't stupidly do something to re-injure myself.
It now looks like I'll blow past my mileage goal for the month, after several months in a row of not being as healthy as I estimated when I set the goal. More importantly, it looks like I'm in decent shape to build a base toward Wineglass.

So I didn't get out early to run and by the time I am ready to go it's about 3:00 p.m. and stinkin' hot and humid(blah, blah, blah). My training program has me doing only 5 miles today so I decide I'm going to dog it and run a flat (relatively speaking), shady (relatively speaking) loop. About a mile in I run into a lovely loose dog (my favorite breed ) with even lovelier teeth and he communicated to me that "none shall pass without my permission". Rather than negotiate at a decided disadvantage, I thought it would be more prudent, in terms of the dog, to take a detour. In terms of the run, the detour was not as prudent. It decreased my shade, added about 500 feet in elevation and tacked on an extra 1.5 miles. On a happier note, I did not have any sightings of the Porta-Potty Pokers and I had a fridge with cold bottles of beer to welcome me home. Life is good.

7/15: 8.3 miles
49.6/80 miles
I really enjoyed my long run today. I ran 8.3 miles. No dogs bothered me. It was hot, but there was a pretty good breeze so it was still nice. I guess for all the complaining I do about the heat, I would rather run in warmer weather over freezing weather. I guess I expect to be sweaty when it is hot, but I don't like being cold and sweaty, it seems more like being sick. Of course if it could just be 60°f for all my runs I would be ok with that.
Congrats to all who raced this weekend.
@HonuNui Poor Lily! I'm glad she's ok.
@polskagirl01 That may be the most disgusting thing I have ever heard.

A pastor does not celebrate a day of rest on Sunday, they work on Sunday, just as the priests of the Old Testament worked on Saturday. For example, I started my work today, Sunday, at about 6:30 am. It is 10:10 pm as I posting this and I am just getting home. I actually take my day of rest on Saturday for the most part. Even then it is more of a 1/2 day of rest at best. Pastors tend to not have any time off - and that is triply true for those (like me) that are bi-vocational.
When the sun is not trying to kill me, as it is at present, I go on 3-4 hour runs, do races, and whatnot all on Saturdays. Right now though, there is so much to do with me moving out of this trailer IN SIX DAYS that everything in my schedule is falling apart, and this will be the second month in a row that I fail to make my 200 miles. Then after I move I will have to find all new paces to run. Should be interesting. Here at my current location, I can actually run a full marathon with very minimal repeats, and plenty of hills AND have a section with water fountains and bathrooms. Gonna miss that!
Brady's Run is a park that will be in 15 min drive. Might try and get some good trail maps for it and use it for my Saturday long runs. Not sure yet. So much is up in the air.
And once I am settled into the house, then I will start looking for a new trail race again.

I read the opening post, so I'm gathering we provide daily accountability and post our current mileage, whether for the day or the week, while attempting to reach our monthly July goal? Is that correct?
Also, seems a good place to stay motivated as well from how lengthy these threads seem to be. A very active bunch, which is nice.
@RunnerGrl1982 Welcome! There are runners of all levels in these threads. Some that are hoping to run a whole mile someday, and nutcases like me that have run 30-mile races, and even nuttier ppl than me that do 100-mile races. Some of us run 14 min miles, some run 6 min miles. BUT we all support and help each other best we can. It is a good group, IMO.3 -
19.04 miles today - slow, but I'm trying to focus on building distance for now so I really am trying not to let my slow pace bother me.
Oh, and I got some sunburn. I thought I had enough sunblock, but apparently not. It was a bit hot, so I ended up stopping a few times to refill beverages (112 oz. total). I drove to a nearby metro area (2 hr. drive) and explored some city trails that I had not visited before. Definitely need to spend more time there for further exploration.

I had to read that comment more than once cause I just had a mental block about that location and that activity. I must be getting old.
But, I mean, they did not at least lock the door?1 -

I do not use sunblock, but I am told that it wears off pretty quickly. I am guessing over your 19 miles you probably outran the life expectancy of it. You might want to run when the UV is not so high, or plan to stop and reapply 1/2 through your run.0 -

Was hoping for an LSD last night. Didn't happen. I was sweating buckets by the second kilometer and had to cut home for a gel at 4k because I was starving. Then I lost all motivation at 6.5km and headed home.
I swear the only thing that kept me moving as long as I did was the 30k race on the horizon.
