In the house... but no run today, probably not tomorrow, and probably not the next day. Probably just dancing in cardboard boxes for a while Garmin says I did more than 20k steps anyways. So guess that counts!13

Not gonna make goal. Morning run along Victoria Bay. The sun tried to kill me, but by now that's to be expected
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)7 -
Socks: Balega...love 'em.
Today was a tempo run of a little over 6 miles...all was going well until I ran through a swarm of gnats towards the end, and the ones that I didn't eat ended up sticking to my face. Lovely.

@garygse I'm going to start calling you "Linda Evangelista". You don't get out of bed for 10K.4 -
Coincidentally, I wrote this today about running shoes.

A friend who is starting to run requested it.3 -
30.2 km this morning. Out and back. Between 8 and 22 km I didn't see another person or car.

Got out of bed yesterday and my knee popped causing a tumble. Looked down and my left knee/leg was swollen as *kitten*. Attempted to wear my compression sleeve but so not possible. It looked like i was trying to fit into an xs and it’s a xxl. I can barely put any weight on my leg which is now causing pain in my right hip. So no more running for me which is good since classes start up again soon. I’ve done more running in the last 9 months than I have in the last 9 years cuz chasing a kid around for the last 7 years isn’t the same. Lol10

All the talk of severe storms and tornados make me very happy to be in California! It is true we have an occasional earthquake and some heat and fires but I would take that anytime to tornados (and ice storms and blizzards)!
Socks - my favorite at all times of the year (note from above it doesn't get very cold here so no need for cold weather socks) are the Smartwool PhD Run ultra light cushion. You can find them online at steep discounts (50% off sometimes) but full price they are pricey at $15. Like @mobycarp's Darn Tough guarantee, Smartwool does the same but they don't always replace like for like. I have turned in mine and gotten back socks that are heavier cushioned. I will wear them but not for running.
@P0PTART - welcome to the group! feel free to jump into the discussion. There are a lot of turtles, some hares and even some snails here!
@RunsOnEspresso - any chance there is a Planet Fitness near you? I think they allow a 2 week trial. Also the membership is super cheap - $10/month. I keep a membership just so I can go there when I can't run outside or if I need a different workout for recovery or injury rehab. They really vary a lot though. Mine happens to be very big and very clean and well maintained but not all of them are unfortunately.
@skippygirlsmom - love that t-shirt!
@5BeautifulDays - congratulations to your daughter (and to you) on the driver's license!
@RunnerGrl1982 - shhhh on the fires! Hoping they stay away for awhile but with the heat coming next week that probably won't be the case. Were do you run - Santa Monica Mountains have some beautiful vistas and trails but the beach would be my choice.
@LaDispute57 - I agree on the minimal shoes. I pretty much wear mine until the uppers disintegrate. I am willing my current Scores to hang on just a while longer through my race and then they can continue to fall apart. They have around 600 miles on them but the upper is starting to tear. What is ShoeGoo for?
@bride001 - what a beautiful location for a race!
@midwesterner85 - I am retired and I don't have the time run that many miles/day! No idea how you can do it and work even with running much faster than me!
@PastorVincent - congratulations on getting moved into the house! There will be plenty of time to run soon!
@orphia - love the pictures!
@abutcher2122 - ouch! hope your knee feels better soon!3 -

Today was a hell of a day what with our car getting one of those "fix me now!" warning lights when we are supposed to leave for vacation tomorrow. Car won't be looked at until Monday. We have a loaner, so for now the plan is to head to Calgary tomorrow and then my husband will drive back to swap cars Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully it's a quick fix - based on the warning light and other symptoms probably something to do with the serpentine belt. Hoping it didn't take anything else with it... and that it's not the alternator.
Tonight's run was good but I cramped up at the end again. My cooldown walk was more of a hobble.

Only 838 posts behind! I have been running, but haven't been posting. Also trying to continue to lift weights as well.
July 5....6.23 miles......probably 88 degrees with 70% humidity.
July 8....2.28 miles on the treadmill plus weight lifting. Nicer weather but I was limited on time.
July 11...7.2 miles....another hot and humid day.
July 13....2.27 miles on the treadmill plus weight lifting.
July 18.....5 miles.....short on time again. Tempo run with sprints.
July 19....2.26 miles (treadmill) and a leg workout with weights (killer).
July 21....6.24 miles.....72 degrees, high humidity and overcast.
I thought that I was in the clear as far as avoiding the rain, but 2 miles in, it started raining hard. I looked at my watch, and it was too late to go to the gym (on Saturday). I hate wet feet, but still eeked out 6 miles in mainly zone running. My mp3 player got wet and is no longer working. So most of my run was in silence. Not fun at all. My legs felt wooden. I think that I didn't totally recover from the weight lifting session on Thursday.
I might make goal. Should be able to get 2 runs in this week and maybe a treadmill session.
Total...31.48 miles
Goal....50 miles.

@shanaber I'm not sure I run faster than you. I'm really slow.1

Thank you all for the advice! I sadly was really short of time when I got to the shop (traveling with 6 month old twins and a 4 year old makes things a challenge). I ended up getting a pair of underarmour running capris - they were so comfy, will test tomorrow, and some body glide. I contemplated socks, but couldn't find any in my size that appealed - why do they spread them throuout the shop and not on one big rack grrr. It may be my goal when I go back in September. And yeah I see the best stuff is so expensive!
I feel kinda cool having a branded pair of capris, never ever owned branded gear before except for shoes. Hopefully they live up to expectations. And it's so nice to go shopping as a size 12! It really does make a difference. Especially compression type clothing!

T why do they spread them throuout the shop and not on one big rack grrr.
Standard Retail Store Trick (TM) - Spread stuff out so that your customers have to wander around and see all the impulse buys.
Before you say "that does not work" - know that it does - really well. Which is why they all do it.4 -

I always cut to the chase and say "do you have..." . I sound like I'm a runner when I get to do that
The stores I've been in don't do that, but I can see it being a thing. Like how Walmart can't leave anything in one place for 2months.
race morning for me! so excited to have a race morning . Didn't even cry about getting up at 5. Dh did keep me up til 11... oh well. I'll sleep when I'm not racing!

Haven't posted since Thursday and now I'm terribly behind!
Friday morning I ran on the track near the YMCA while my little one was at swim practice. It's an old high school and an old track - my Garmin tells me that it's about .02 miles off, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but 12 times around means I'm off by a quarter of a mile! Hence why I ran 4.25 miles instead of just 4
Saturday morning I woke up early to a downpour. The forecast said it wouldn't let up until the afternoon so I resigned myself to running on the treadmill. My training plan said 60 minutes easy, then 10x 1min at 5k pace, 1min at marathon pace, then 20 minutes easy. Ok... 100 minutes on the treadmill. I can do that right?! I watched Food Network My garmin (in indoor mode) said I ran 10.74 miles, but I'm going with what the treadmill said.
Have a great Sunday all! Today is my rest day - I'm going to catch up on the thread!

I liked last week’s evening long run so much I did it again this week - same route at the beginning with a slightly longer bit at the end. I had some real trouble with pacing - I got off to a bit quicker start than usual recently, felt really draggy around mile 3-4, then had a weird second wind that had me going what felt really fast, only my watch wasn’t showing me my pace. I ended up taking a few walk breaks in the last couple of miles, which was a little frustrating, but at least I realized what was going on with my watch - a couple of weeks ago my husband had to do a fresh reboot because it wasn’t synching properly and the default only shows average pace over the entire run. I honestly had forgotten until last night so I’m glad to have that sorted out. I think it speaks to how zoned out I get while running that it took so long to noticed something was going on!
Even with walking I made a new long distance record in what I’m considering an acceptable long run time, so that’s awesome. I’m a little sore this morning and way behind where I’d hoped to be on my work hours for the week, but so it goes. Our new patio furniture got here last week and we’ve been having a run of excellent weather, so we are both out in the yard on our laptops and it is very pleasant.

My daughter’s swim club puts on a 5k fundraiser each year and I was a co-chair for the run, so it was a light week on running. I could have made it out there, but mentally just wasn’t there. Weather went back and forth for the two days leading up to the run and it was the first time doing it as a glow run. Weather held in until 10 min before the run and it started down pouring. Thankfully, it let up a little during the run and other than a couple sightings of heat lightening after it had started it was just the rain. I had missed the online signup for the Packer 5k that was held yesterday (our run was Friday night) and pick up and signup started at 3 pm. The plan was if things were going ok before all the craziness my husband and I would drive over quick and signup. I knew it would be tough, but there’s a wellness series they do and I wanted to try and go for the series.
Packer 5K Recap
Getting up was tough as didn’t sleep too well the night before. Just a lot of adrenaline left over after the end of cleanup and thoughts about things to change for next year. Got up anyway and put on a happy face and started getting ready. It was overcast skies and looked like rain.
We had lots of time as pulled in to park shortly after 7 am. Walked around to keep the muscles warm and to wake up . Lots of people dressed up in Packer gear for the festivities. We lined up about 15 min before in our wave. Picked a spot towards the back as my time was likely going to be towards the end of that wave. Crossed the start and didn’t see my husband until he was heading towards the finish line when he was coming out of the stadium.
I peeked at my watch during the first mile to see where my pace was. I felt good, but it was too fast so slowed down. I have to learn to not look at my watch as I should just go by feel and see what happens. I didn’t stop for the water stations so didn’t have to try and navigate through there, but plenty of volunteers so would have been fine and the wave we were in didn’t seem like it would be a problem. During the last mile they send you through the tunnel to do a lap on the very outside of the field through Lambeau Field. My husband was coming out of the stadium while I was going in. During the lap they put the people on the Jumbotrons, so it’s an experience for football fans.
I finished in 28:47 and my husband finished in 25:21, so we were both happy with those results.

Yowzers-43 posts, skimmed all. Great run pics and race reports all. On socks don't have a preference at this point but I am sure as mileage picks up I will avail myself of some of the suggested brands. 4.65 miles this morning per endomondo with negative splits the last 2 + miles. Didn't get started until after 1000 and while there were some shaded areas it was mostly sunny with relatively low humidity after the storms last night. Overall not a bad run on 4 hours of sleep and after bowling for 3 hours straight, until 0200. On the agenda for today, hollowing some zucchini and filling with onions, mushrooms and marinara topped with shredded mozzarella and parmesan. Also will be roasting some squash an onions later. Total mileage of 29.05 outdoor and looked back at my earlier posts for my total treadmill mile and have 5.2 so far. So current actual totals for the month=34.25.

Wineglass Marathon 9/30
I was scheduled to run 20 today, but around mile 17 my right knee started aching. Now that I’m home and have been able to soak in the tub and sit for awhile, it feels ok, but at the time I wasn’t sure what was causing it. I walked most of mile 17 to see if it would feel better, and I ended up jogging home, cutting off 1.25 miles from my run. I’m guessing it was just achy from having run so far, but I figured it is better to cut it short and rest instead of injuring myself and not being able to run the marathon.
Later today, I’ll have to look at my schedule and do some tweaking. My next really long run is scheduled for 3 weeks (23 miles), but I’ll likely decrease it to 20 or 21 since I didn’t make it today.
I also discovered today that my Apple Watch is not going to make it through my marathon. At the end of 18.75, I only had 5% battery left. That is what I get for being a slower runner, I guess. For those of you with Garmins, what is the battery life like? I really don’t want to spend money on a new watch right now, but I guess my only other option would be to have Runkeeper or another app running on my phone during the run.9 -

7/22 - 3 miles biking with Skip
43 of 60 miles
The past week I haven't run much. Skip had her college orientation this past week so I was getting in early and staying late so I wouldn't have to take vacation time for that. She had her MRI on her legs/knees on Wednesday and we have an appointment tomorrow to discuss the results. Everyone I talk to thinks she would be in agony when she runs if it was a stress fracture including her college coach who she talked to for almost 3 hours while we were in Georgia. He watched her run a little on the track, told her a few things he saw right off with her form that he could fix "in no time". I think talking face to face with him was great, she told her "we are here for you, this injury is a blip on the screen of your college career" then told her of his injuries and comebacks and that really helped her alot. She meet in person 2 of the 3 girls she will be sharing a dorm suite with, one is also hurt so they will rehab together. We did go run at another college in town, Berry College, what an amazing campus. She can''t wait to run and bike there.
Instead of running this morning, she asked me to bike with her since she is allowed to bike so I did. I'm not a good rider so I did 3 miles and went home ha ha she did 5 and came home since she had to be at work this morning.
I'm going to do my best to catch up on everyone.12 -
June Running Update
Week 1: 26.6
Week 2: 2
Week 3: 16
MTD: 44.6
Won’t make goal by a large margin this month in what I can run in a week is all I will complete for this month. I returned to running after week of rest for right knee tendinitis and on day 3 of running again I stopped as I could feel it returning. So taking more time to recover as we head into August. In the meantime, suspected that orthotics that podiatrist fitted me for PF in left foot might be the culprit. Saw him on Saturday and he said that I need them for PF (which seems to be recovering) but it was causing gait change/hyperextension of my right knee. He made some adjustments to the heels to lower them some to hopefully neutralize knee extension while still providing PF support. Had to DNS the Chicago Rock and Roll HM as I will need another week or more to heal and restart (again) my marathon training.9 -

That's a bummer! I have a watch 3 and haven't had battery issues yet, but I'm not running nearly as long as you are (yet!). Were you using the battery-conserve option when it drained that far? I haven't tried it because I like having cellular service during my runs, but I could see giving that and the HRM up to avoid having to carry a phone.0 -
@marisap2010 Battery life is one of the main reasons I switched from Fitbit Surge to Garmin. On Fitbit, I never turned on GPS and still had much worse battery life.
I have the Garmin Fenix 3 HR and pair it to the Garmin HRM Run chest strap (for more accurate HR and other analytics). I was at 100% charge yesterday before I mowed the lawn (no GPS or chest strap, just steps and OHR). After my 19.06 miles this morning (3:07:56) with GPS and HRM Run, I still have 75%.
I have no experience with Apple or Suunto, but have heard good things about Suunto battery life also... especially if you set it to ping the GPS satellites less frequently.0 -

No, I haven’t tried that because I like the cellular on my watch, but I may try it on my next long run and just have my phone in the pocket of my water belt in case I need it.

I really don’t want to spend money on a new watch right now, but I guess my only other option would be to have Runkeeper or another app running on my phone during the run.
That's a bummer! I have a watch 3 and haven't had battery issues yet, but I'm not running nearly as long as you are (yet!). Were you using the battery-conserve option when it drained that far? I haven't tried it because I like having cellular service during my runs, but I could see giving that and the HRM up to avoid having to carry a phone.
No, I haven’t tried that because I like the cellular on my watch, but I may try it on my next long run and just have my phone in the pocket of my water belt in case I need it.
I haven't experimented with battery conserve, but since it's set to go on when you have a running workout going, I would guess that cellular would turn back on if you ended the workout in case of an emergency. I wonder if you could manually turn cellular on to check for messages periodically without ending the workout? I might have to experiment with this at some point because I'm definitely curious. A little googling looks like you could use a bluetooth HRM while in conserve mode if that functionality were important.2 -

I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3. I'm on Day 2 of a new charge and the battery is already at 75%. I went on a 45 minute run w/GPS yesterday morning and it drained the battery by 10%. It's only a week old, and I think I have the settings draining the battery too much in some places I'm not aware of.
I think I can get 4 days worth out of the watch before having to charge it, but I worry it wouldn't last a marathon run beyond 6 hours of utilizing GPS.

Felt good until the last 3 miles then I think the heat caught up to me and I lost all energy. It was run/walk, mostly walk, for the last couple of miles.4
