With that said, in regards to my running specifically - I wish the first mile didn't always feel like garbage. After about a mile and a half my body just wakes up and kicks into gear. I just can't seem to ever get off to a good start. I'll even do a light warm up to help flush my legs, but it doesn't aid in my effort. I think it's more a mental thing than physical, but I honestly don't know. I'm certainly no expert on running.
this is the first twenty minutes for me. I have tried just going for a short run round the park, which is about twenty minutes long, and it feels terrible. half way round I am cursing getting out of bed. after about twenty minutes I'm flying. But anything less, hell.
so you are not alone in feeling this - there's a fair few of us here who have the same thing!!
i feel like the longer i run, the longer it takes me into fall into my stride.2 -

Generally, I'll have a rough 1.5 miles and then all of a sudden my body gets with the program and my breathing evens out and pace really picks up. I'll have a lot of great energy for about 800m and then my body is like, "Okay, that's enough of that - go back to your usual pace." Then I'll get another energizing wind another half mile later and continue the same process. LOL. It's a bit frustrating, since my body doesn't want to keep a constant pace as much as I try. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but I just try to listen to my body and let it do it's thing.
Anyways....I hope everyone is doing really well. I need to catch up on everyone's threads. 0_o
This is normal. As you become more and more of a long distance runner it takes your body a bit to get in "okay so now we are running" - this is why so many of us now run a 5k to warm up for a 5k race. 1-3 miles seems to be the warm-up range I see people report.5 -
7 easy miles this am.

This spring when I ran my 10k, I chose to park at an offsite lot that was 3 miles from the start/finish line. There were buses you could ride in and ride back to the lot after the race. I decided to use the jog in as a warm up for the race. I ran my best 10k that day and I felt good enough after the race to run back to the lot. I would also say this contributed to a quicker recovery then I have had in past races. I used a 2.3 mile warm up before my half and also had a personal best. I do think it may be an age thing but perhaps its just a thing as I age I accept the wisdom of my elders.

@RunnerGrl1982 you are so right. I still feel like I'm going to die that first mile. It's very gratifying to see the long distance pros in this group say that feeling is normal.3

Upcoming races:
October 20: Sinnemahone Ultra Marathon Trail Race (50K)
Yesterday was hectic...had to squeeze my run in mid to late afternoon, which totally sucks for a morning runner. And because I am trying to cram in end of the month billing and pack for vacation, I am stuck having to do it again today. And since today might be my last chance to run for the month, I need to pop a hot tenner this afternoon to make my goal...lol. These damn challenges. I might think about squeezing in a couple of treadmill runs on the ship, depending on what the outdoor track looks like (I can see it now: 20 laps to get a mile)... both make me shudder, so I may opt for lots of cold booze by the pool.7 -

I vote for the cold beer, every time

Ha! Apparently, I ran so slow this morning MFP assumed I was standing still. 😂

Yup, I'm on this boat as well. It's been a gradual thing as I've been increasing my mileage, which is frustrating but apparently not unusual. Running slower has been helping some, but not completely.
@cburke8909: I suppose it's all relative, but I've been feeling it at 35, which I'm given to understand isn't over the hill for distance running. That said, I didn't do any sort of strenuous physical activity in my 20s (although I did walk a lot) so it's hard to compare - there's a pretty good argument to be made I'm in better physical shape now than I've ever been.1 -
Yay I finally got to run again! Haven't been able to get out there for almost a week. Our car died and we've been spending every minute trying to make arrangements for another car, shopping, and trying to catch up on the work we skipped so we could take a vacation.
I bought a car which happens to have a bike rack. Is this a sign? Should I buy a bike? I don't swim well enough to be doing triathlons. But I could work on that.
@skippygirlsmom So glad to hear there was no stress fracture!
5k around the lake in 94 degree weather, 32 minutes, not bad. Cooler than it has been.

So, that moment when you look at the stats for your trail and realize that the old lady with scoliosis you met at the bathroom at the trail head can run the pants off you. I think she's about seventy. She's running six minute miles.

The first mile is a lie!
Seriously though I think this has to do with glucagon, and it taking a moment for your liver and pancreas to start waking up and shipping out. It's a common phenomenon, which may have more to do with efficiency and time than distance, so the better you run, the longer distance it lasts.1 -
@MobyCarp Great runs!
To all the 50 Mile Club runner, WAY TO GO! Keep up the awesome work. I'm hoping to achieve that this month myself. I might just scoot by a mile or two.
@Marissaxzxzxz @katharmonic @shanaber @ereck44 @marisap2010 @hanlonslc @workaholic_nurse @mbaker566 @polskagirl01 - Ya'll killing it with your runs.
@MegaMooseEsq Glad to hear Bowie is a bit better, even if his time is short now. Losing a pet or even the eventuality of losing a pet is hard.
@AprilRN10 and @kgirlhart Congrats on over-achieving your goals! Hell yeah!
@zdyb23456 Congrats on your distance PR. That's friggin' AWESOME.
@amymoreorless HAHA. MFP did that to me just last week. I was like, "Okay, sure..." *thumbs up* 0_o
@girlinahat Heh. The struggle IS real. Good to know it's not just me having this issue. I definitely feel you.
@PastorVincent Great info. I still consider myself new to running in general, so I don't know what to expect as I get into longer distances eventually. I have a 5K race coming up....so this is being filed away. Thank you!
@cburke8909 That's amazing. I have a race near where I live, and I'm thinking about running there for my warm-up since it's less than the actual race mileage, but enough to get the legs going. Will most possibly give this a go.
@kcs76 Same. It is nice to see it confirmed. That first mile is just....ugh. Fast forward please. LOL.
@LaDispute57 You, among many others, continue to impress me with your distances for the month.
@rheddmobile All lies. HEHE. Totally. What you're suggesting though makes sense to me.
For anyone I missed, I continue cheering you on with your mileage. We're almost to the end of the month! Woohoo! I know I jumped into this at the middle of the month basically with you all, but it's been quite the journey. And I look forward to the next month as well.

@amymoreorless and @runnergrl1982 i get that nearly every time. I asked about it when I first started using strava. Something to the effect of “ok, I know I am darn slow, but I promise I AM moving!” Apparently any run that averages 12:00 min/mile or slower coming from strava will show that way. And so for it to show a pace and not “in place” you have to average 11:59 or faster.
Good thing I got running in this morning. I learned they officially totaled my vehicle today. And the buy back price is half of what they are offering for the whole thing. So, car shopping commences. Depending on how Monday goes, I may get to add moving and apartment shopping to that.10 -

165.04 of 150km for July5 -
@workaholic_nurse Glad you're feeling inspired!
@zdyb23456 Congrats on that distance PR!
@RunnerGrl1982 There's a running expression that I heard (and mentioned above by @rheddmobile) that says the first mile is a lie. It's very true.
The temps are starting to climb again, and I made goal with five days remaining (although realistically, that'll translate into three more runs - I think I'm going to give myself a break over the weekend).
In other news, I signed up for the Phoenix marathon that'll take place in early February.
