August goal: 75 miles
8/1: 4.5 miles
8/2: 5 miles
8/5: 6.5 miles
8/7: 4.3 miles
20.3/75 miles
Today's run started out feeling hard. It's hard to believe it can be so hot at 6 in the morning. I felt really slow and sluggish starting out, but overall my pace was ok. Not as fast as last week, but that's alright. I also saw a skunk this morning. He was just ambling across the street. He didn't seem to notice me and I stopped and waited to let him pass before I got too close to him. If there is one thing you don't want to do it is startle a skunk.
@workaholic_nurse Using the c25k app for intervals is a great idea!
@mbaker566 Those dogs are too cute!

You might want to check out one of the many "Couch to 5k" programs that are out there to help you make your 5k target.
Yeah I’ve got zombie couch to 5k as the nhs one I hated the voices going to try the first episode today1 -

Yeah, probably why it always comes to mind for me too. I mean I have down multiple marathons, and even an ultra now... I should be beyond that stage. But, eh, guess not.4 -

I wonder if the love and the hate kind of grow together, like how the first mile only really starts sucking the longer your runs get. When I was running 20 minutes 2-3 times a week I mostly just enjoyed myself. Now *kitten*’s getting serious and I begin to understand the love/hate dynamic.4 -
8/1/18 2.65 miles
8/2/18 3.1 miles
8/3/18 3.1 miles
8/4/18 10 miles

Total 25.45 /100-115
Woo! Quarter of the way to my monthly goal. Where you at my 100 milers?
Sharing a photo if what I deal with every morning at 415ish. I miss my week in Chicago when I could sleep in until 6 and run later in the morning.7 -

Holy buckets! Is that Arizona? I thought the drier states were supposed to cool off at night?2 -

Good idea - go for a run while the baby naps (husband works from home so baby’s not alone)
Bad idea - run outside in 90% humidity
The trail was about half in the shade, half just baking in the sun. And by trail I mean paved and level schuykill ricer trail, not some silly running through the forest over branches and twigs. I kept brushing bugs off my arms and face only to realize it was just sweat running down my body. Have I mentioned I hate sweating?
Got home, scared an engineer who’s doing his outside inspection as our HOA transitions from developer ownership to HOA. He wasn’t expecting to see a super sweaty woman come stumbling up the trail and I wasn’t expecting to see a tall man taking pictures of my siding. Fun times.
Yoga in the basement for my hips and hamstrings. I *think* I can feel some improvement in this yoga flow, I’m also generally having less leg twinges when I run. Awhile back I mentioned my left foot feeling some numbness and when I got fitted for my running shoes, he mentioned I might just have tight hamstrings. I’m still doing the calf raises when I brush my teeth, so hard to tell what is or isn’t helping.
August - 7.25/20 miles8 -
Aug 7th update: 3.55/60 miles. I took the first week off but I look forward to catching up on the weekends on some hiking trails:)6

That would be Phoenix! Nope, summer overnight lows are lucky if dip below 90. And we have a monsoon brewing so we will only have a high of like 105 but humidity will be about 70%. (It was 35% this morning). Only good thing about going out so early is the glowing ball of doom isn't up yet so it's not TOO bad.3 -

So this morning, I am about a mile from the house finishing up my run and this lady in a mid-size pickup slows down, rolls down her window and says, "Just want to let you know to be careful. A pretty big bear just crossed the road in front of me about a quarter of a mile up the road. Its backside was even with my hood, so please be careful!" I thanked her, she left and I was left wondering how exactly I was supposed to be "careful"? I am much slower than a bear, I can't climb trees and I'm only wearing running shoes, shorts and tattoos. "Being careful" seemed small comfort and empty advice when contemplating a possible animal encounter, especially since going a different way home would have meant about a five mile detour. All it it did was make me paranoid until I got my sweaty butt home. I think I would have been happier not knowing there was a bear around. I know very little about bears, but I suspect he will be long gone by tomorrow's run. If not, I guess I will have to "be careful".10 -
8/1 = 15 miles
8/2 = 10.5 miles
8/3 = yoga flow class
8/4 = rest day
8/5 = 10.5 miles
8/6 = 3 miles & 30 minutes kettlebells
8/7 = 14 miles
I took an epic journey to the nicer side of suburbia this morning. The great thing about that part of town is that they all have militant HOAs and give a *kitten* about manicured lawns. Sprinkles everywhere! Wheeee.... I am sure anyone peeping through their drapes at 6am thought I was crazy. 🤷♀️
August goal miles = 175 / 53 miles-to-date
Upcoming Races:
10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/11 = Hill Country Trivium Half Marathon (tentative depending on work schedule)
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon8 -

I guess she figured you could change your route or something. Or if you were armed you could ready your weapons... or maybe channel chi or something.5 -

Hi all! Hope it's not too late to join the challenge. Looks like a fun group. I took a week (or three ) off since my last race in July. I'm in for 40 miles for August just to ease back into it with this heat. I will be ramping my miles up soon to start training for a half marathon in November. Looking for some motivation to make myself run. This heat and humidity is brutal.

Seriously though, can you call your local animal control and ask them for advice? Run in another area until the bear moves on?12 -

Ran a block to catch a bus, didn’t even break a sweat! I never want to let myself forget how much better it feels being in shape.9

Well... I guess I would have to opt for chi channeling... too stupid to change my route and too smart to challenge a bear to a knife fight.
Maybe tomorrow morning I should just carry some snacks to toss to him to keep him distracted long enough for me to pass by...
I don't think we have any such thing as animal control out here... unless you count Wayne the Poacher.2 -
(Yukon Trail Marathon had 2 grizzlies charge the lead runners this year! Eek!
Oh my goodness - this is exactly why my husband gives me the stink eye everytime I talk about hiking in Alaska or Glacier Nat'l Park. He is convinced he'll be eaten by a bear.
Lots of chatter about pepper spray - mine is on an elastic strap that I put on my wrist. No female runner should be without something to protect herself. I used to carry bear spray on my bike but it wasn't easily accessible and it's not like I can tell some pervert "hang on and give me a second so i can unstrap this really bulky bear spray before you grab me." I bought the pepper spray at an REI and they kept reminding me to NOT "test" it in the store. Apparently someone had done just that one day, they had to shut down the store, clean all the ducts, and dump some merchandise. I've heard the stuff can stop a charging grizzly. Hopefully I will NEVER have to put that to test.
Past two days I thought "yay - temps are 74 - I'm running outside" - and then couldn't figure out why I was a disgusting sweaty pit - hmmm....could be the 73 degree dewpoint. So even when temps aren't terrible, that humidity kills me every time.
@rheddmobile - thanks for the tip on the oranges - hadn't thought of that!
@shanaber - hmm....oatmeal is a great idea but I'll have to check the carbs. I'm trying to limit my carbs and although it helps with weight loss, I can't say I'm a fan when it comes to providing enough fuel for running.3 -

I didn’t realize bears were so particular about the gender of their victims.
For real though, do what you need to do to stay and feel safe. For me, that means watching out for idiots in cars (and bikes to a lesser extent). I don’t need a weapon for that other than my brain and reflective clothing. I am grateful that there are no other statistically significant dangers to runners of any gender where I live.4 -
I think the only wildlife I have to content with in England/ where I live is foxes3

8/1 rest
8/2 9miles
8/3 4.22miles
8/4 13.1miles
8/5 rest
8/6 8.5miles
8/7 4miles (treadmill)
Decided to chill a bit this morning instead of running. Then decided to grocery shop... ultimate procrastination 🙂
By the time we got home I decided to run on the treadmill to avoid the heat and sun. 4 miles wasn’t too bad and much cooler than 85 degrees and the sun beating down!
