I posted this on the Facebook group already - one of the bucket list races (Yukon Trail Marathon - I would do the Half or try to get a relay team together) I am considering for 2019 or 2020 had 2 grizzlies charge the lead runners this year! Eek!
I have running tights and bras and shirts and stuff but my mom has all my shoes except an older pair I retired a few weeks ago and a pair I wore over the winter that seem to be too big now that it's not -20C. She has most of my accessories too (fuel belt, hats, various nutrition supplements etc).
I think I can manage with the shoes I have here but not for more than a couple runs.6 -
Wow, couple of days away from a computer and I missed pages and pages!
Nice easy run early yesterday morning, laughed a lot of the way though. We're staying in a small rural village up in the hills and most of the locals are elderly and go out for walks first thing in the morning before it gets too hot. THREE of them I passed asked why I was in such a hurry and suggested I should slow down and walk like them! No shin pain at all so I'm going to continue with my plan to increase my 'long' runs by a measly half kilometre per week this month, so I'm due for 6.5km crack of dawn tomorrow.

That would be my concern too. Dh has just been pardoned, and he bought a handgun. We've yet to do the cc course. I've mixed feelings about it. He found something like deringer size, but revolver with 6 shots, thinks i should carry on runs/bikes. Like i said, I'm mixed over it. Once in a while i remember to grab a good pocket knife. Figure that'd get me out of trouble with most potential animal attacks.
have you considered bear spray too? spray for distance, knife for close encounters
Yes. I know a female runner that carries pepper spray in her hand and runs the same area i do. I really dont want to carry anything in my hands. A knife clips to my waist band. So I just havent figured out how to carry it. And dd took my pepper spray. Then Dh took my spibelt thing, i should just order another spibelt and another spray. Haha! I wanted a telescoping baton to run with. I can do that in my hand as long as i dont trip and impale myself... Hmm. idk.1 -

I run with this when I am not running with someone. Once a year, there seems to be some random creepy dude attacking female runners. I am pretty sure I am safe because I am an old lady and super mega sweaty runner. However, you never know what kind of gross weirdos are out there.

Rest day today as I slept through 0530 alarm and had to take father-in-law to doctor's office. Made it to work at 1000, but have to work until after dark tonight. Needed the day off anyways.

Unwanted rest day. Blood draw this morning. It was 104 by the time I got home and ate something with no clouds. WAY too hot since at 93 I overheat with no cloud coverage.5

And yes, I *did* have to work to maintain that look; but most of that work was push-aways. I can't out-run my fork. (And the muscles are still much better defined when I'm dehydrated after a run than they are before the run.)12 -

Nominal August mileage goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Rest day today, but I didn't report for yesterday.
Sunday I slept late and missed church. By the time I got up, it was 74º F. By the time I got through breakfast, it was in the mid-80s. By the time I had time to run, it was 94º F. So . . . I deliberately waited. This was hard. Mid-afternoon is a natural time for me to run on a Sunday, and I had to fill time. Told myself I don't want to be out there before 6, because I want there to be more shade.
Got interested in a puzzle with how some non-running software works, and the time between 5:30 and 7 flew by. Ended up hitting the road at 7:16 PM, when Garmin reported the temperature had fallen to 90º F (32º C). Didn't feel too bad, and the shadows were long enough to give me plenty of shade. Set out to run the 10K route that I bailed out of the Sunday before, being mindful to keep it easy early on.
The humidity got to be a noticeable factor just as not being warmed up yet stopped being an issue. Go figure. But I persevered, ran by heart rate for a while, and found lots of shade. The shade really helped. Found I was running miles 5 and 6 a bit faster unconsciously, with mile 6 right up at marathon pace; so when Garmin clicked over 6 miles, I stepped it up to T pace level of effort. At the last fire hydrant, I stepped it up to I pace level of effort, and halfway from there to my driveway I gave it what I had left in a stride. I was totally soaked in sweat, but otherwise felt OK.
Humidity notes: Finished my Nuun at 5.5 miles. Won't do me any good to take it into the locker room. Downed an S-Cap when I slowed to a walk for cool down. Managed to get my stretching done outside before my bladder forced me in to use the facilities. I think I can manage these little short runs in the summer weather.
Looking at the pace, after the fact: I see mile splits of 8:05, 7:37, 7:46, 7:41, 7:37, 7:33, and a 6:48 average for the tag end after 6 miles. I would have thought I was running the tag end faster than that, but I wouldn't have thought I was running mile 6 that fast. So I guess it all evens out, under the weather conditions.
Rest day today, and tomorrow I'll decide whether I'm just doing some easy miles or doing some light speed work. The serious speed work this week will be IEXC #2 on Wednesday.

That's a crazy schedule. Or it was when you did it this year. Now that you have done it once, next year it's just another couple of weekends...
I can't do the Pittsburgh Marathon. I think about it, but there are way too many runners and it's in the city and too much chaos with the crowds and vendors. I just can't...(said in my whiniest voice).
I will, however, be doing Glacier Ridge again too... and I am giving some serious thought to doing the 50 mile distance this time. I have been running those trails for years now so I think it's a pretty manageable course for that distance.1 -

Yes, for hard surfaces... roads, sidewalks, paved bike trails, or even a lot of gravel, those Hokas are the only shoe for me. My feet are super super sensitive, which is why I can't be barefoot. The pain of every little spec of dirt, tiny pebble, or even a microscopic piece of tree bark or twig will cause unimaginable pain. I have a very high pain threshold, except the bottom of my feet.
For dirt trails, I've tried a few different shoes and currently have Vasque. I'm thinking about Solomon next time I replace trail shoes, though.2 -
@PastorVincent I was just about to register for the Two Face at North Park but realized that I have long training run scheduled for Saturday (my longest one so far) and not sure I want to move it to Sunday after doing a race...0

That's one of the reasons I am considering carrying a gun.
Just for critters I would recommend something lighter like a .22 Magnum. They make a "snake-shot round" that provides excellent deterrent value and doesn't require as much aiming as single rounds. Think shotgun .22 shells.

No, I don't think so. If it were, it would be expected to be the opposite... that I would have less feeling in my feet rather than being hyper sensitive. But I've had diabetes since I was 9 years old, so I can't remember.
I do recall, however, that I would always cover my feet in the winter when I was young and would wear flip flops sometimes in the summer. In the winter, if they were exposed to air, they would dry out so badly that they would crack open and bleed. In the worst of times, they could go from normal to bleeding with less than 10 min. of exposure to air. The only solution was to suffocate them by wearing shoes that did not breathe. When sleeping, I would often put plastic bags over them and try to tie as tightly as possible, then wrap blankets really thickly and tightly so that there was no air bubble and air could not get through. This was a problem long before I got diabetes and for several years afterwards into my teen years. All skin was dry when I was young, but my feet were always the worst. A dermatologist once said I had both ichthyosis and seborrheic dermatitis.4 -

not necessarily and no more than any other hand gun. They make similar rounds for several different calibers. I was just thinking that as a deterrent for smaller 4 footed or slithery dangers, and with shaky aim from running, that style of round might be the better option as opposed to having to worry about bipedal and larger 4 footed dangers like hogs which is why I carry rounds that are larger and consequently heavier as is the weapon carried. For smaller runners the weight being carried and how it is carried over longer distances is one of many considerations, in addition to comfort with the weapon, and proficiency.1 -

I am back for August. Late to the party, but here.
My husband decided to take an out of state training trip last week of July, leaving me with the kids and orientations at schools. So, I only finished July with 36 miles.
I am going to set goal of 50 miles in August and stretch goal of 60 miles.

@shanaber - Love Gypsy Runner products. She has a guarantee on fit also - if a pair does not fit, you can exchange them for a size up or down.
I carry same pepper spray as @amymoreorless and @kgirlhart. My husband takes over protectiveness to the extreme, so I have to carry it with me. I usually run solo.
Registering for the Twilight Classic today because I want the shirt.
