A Run, by MegaMoose, Esq.
Me at 2:30: Huh, looks like the predicted thunderstorms have been pushed back. I could totally get a long run in and then work on grading over a well-earned cheeseburger! 90% humidity with a dew point of 68 isn’t great, but at least it’s only 70 degrees, overcast, and I’m really busy tomorrow. Let’s go!
Me around 3:30: Man, that first mile is the worst.
3:35: Wait, I just now hit a mile?
-: I’m breathing pretty hard. Better slow down. But make sure to relax my arms and shoulders. And not to cross my arms. And breathe in an odd pattern. Wait, I think my arms are crossing. Am I relaxed yet? Don’t look down!
-: First section of new path. Oh, the running path has disappeared into the bike path. Well, I’m just a spoiled duckling used to divided paths, aren’t I?
-: I think I went too far.
-: It’s really hard to get much sense out of the map on my watch, but I’m pretty sure I went too far.
3:50-ish: Great, a water fountain! *water fountain doesn’t work* Oh good, a trail map! *map cuts off before it gets where I’d planned on going* F this. *turns back* I probably just didn’t go far enough. Whatever. Do I need to run against traffic on a bike path? Those people walking six abreast don’t seem to think so. I am not relaxed. Are my knees actually hitting each other? Wouldn’t I be sure if they were? Why is my left ankle numb?
-: Finally, somewhere I recognize!
-: I should definitely take a new shortcut now.
-: OMG did I get turned around again? *checks watch again, realize I have lost all ability to read maps but remain convinced I’m going the wrong way somehow* Okay, I can see a lake ahead. But which lake is it? Oh thank god it’s the right lake. Home free!
-: *still running* My back hurts and my legs hurt and my throat hurts and I do not feel relaxed.
4:16: *Finally reaches the drinking fountain about a mile from home. Turns off my workout tracker, walks to the waterside. About to sit down on some detritus when I see a dead fish. Sit down anyhow but keep my shoes on*
4:20: Hey, if I run around THIS lake I should hit a bit over seven miles like I planned. But why would I do that, self? Because you’re a bag of crazy, that’s why. You wouldn’t be out here otherwise. Good point, precious. Let’s go.
4:24 to 5:01: [omitted 35 minutes of wondering why I do this to myself, reminding myself that it will take too long to walk all the way home, trying to figure out why so many people quit running because of their knees when science! says impact is good for strengthening your joints, why Minneapolis is apparently the one place outside of California (I assume) where no one minds running in a sports bra, and so on, and so forth]
A half hour later: oooh, PRs for distance and weekly mileage! *starts planning my MFP update*
The end.

Monthly Question?
macros. Do you target them? And where's your personal "sweet" spot?
I fell off the bandwagon hard with this when I developed my wheat issues. I still trying to get back to low carb, which I firmly believe is the healthiest diet. I just need to work my way back into it. It will help when we get more unpacked too.

Yea... it was more or less than a marathon depending on whether you believe Garmin or my phone. My phone is always slightly higher, plus I paused Garmin a few times when I stopped in gas stations and/or restrooms and didn't always get it started right away, and went several feet from my car before starting it. All in all, I'm sure it was a bit more than a marathon, but I log based on Garmin.
Lucky enough, there was a gas station along the route that lets me refill water for free from their fountain (as long as it is just water, which I prefer anyway). The end / turn around point today was at a park with a place to refill my water bottles. And I stopped at a gas station on the way back when I was hurting badly for electrolytes and had nearly run out at that point, but was able to buy some beef sticks with a load of sodium. This route has places to stop along the way, but is in a city about 2 hrs. away from where I live. So it is nice to visit on some weekends, but not an everyday route.
ETA: Point is that "unsupported" is technically true, meaning I had to carry a bit more (wallet, electrolytes, glucometer, glucose tablets, water and raincoat, which I didn't need but definitely would have needed if I had not brought it). I would carry most all of that in a race anyway, but the 'water stops' are those gas stations and parks along the route. Sure, there is a long stretch with no gas station and no water (approximately 8 miles to water only, then 8 miles again back to the next gas station), but I can get re-supply at a few points along the way.5 -
@midwesterner85 I hoofed it today carrying all my stuff... no shops or anything on these back country roads... loaded up with water and Tailwind... had 120 ounces but ran dry with 3.5 miles to go... damn near died...lol... seriously thought about stream water, but dysentery, ya know?2

@LaDispute57 When I'm out on trails without frequent safe water sources, I carry a Sawyer squeeze micro filter and bag or bottle for refill.4

In for 50 miles again. It will be challenging this month. We are going on vacation at the end of this month and will be spending a lot of time in the car. 8 more work shifts until our vacation. Yay!
August 3....2.41 miles (treadmill) + weight lifting.
August 4.....rest day
It was 93 degrees, which is an increase of 23 degrees in one day, and couldn't motivate myself to do anything.
My husband's birthday tomorrow and my girlfriend's on Monday. My girlfriend and I went to an Indian restaurant tonight to celebrate. My husband doesn't like spicy food. (We will celebrate next week).
I tried to schedule myself off but work wouldn't allow it. It's hard to get people to work on Sunday. In fact, I work the next 3 Sundays.
Planning to get at least 2 runs next week.

@MegaMooseEsq Thanks for the shout-out!
I feel the way that you do during the first mile to mile and a half. I learned that after I break a sweat, it is a lot easier. The last time I ran, I felt okay after a half mile, but it was extremely hot, and I broke a sweat faster.
Do you run with music? To me, it is way harder to run to the sounds of nature or silence. I am also thinking about downloading some audiobooks, just for a change.
@Elise4270 I am not really a macro counter, but pay attention to my daily fiber intake. I usually try to meet or exceed it due to my chronic constipation issues. I still have 8 pounds to lose, but have kept off 46 pounds.2 -
August 1 - 20 km run
August 2 - 9 km run
August 3 - rest day
August 4 - 16 km Harriers trail run/9 km water girl for football
August 5 - 15 km Harriers trail run
Total distance 69 km - goal 350 km
Thanks @Shanaber it was hard going with the gusts of wind at least I got blown home by the tailwind2 -
@garygse thanks. As much as I hated it, I loved it. I need to work on my hills and I know that. Part of the issue is believe it or not my ribs still hurt. If I’m breathing hard and my heart rate is high it hurts. I really love running them though.4
-
@marisap2010 welcome to the Forerunner 235 family! Think you will love it.
@midwesterner85 monster run! That's incredible.
@LaDispute57 way to make up all those miles!
@MegaMooseEsq great run report, and distance PRs. I often have those thoughts while running, and always thought having a voice recorder while running would be a good idea to capture those choices nuggets....but then think no, 5hat would a xxx rated audio that nobody should hear!5 -
@ MegaMoose great run report!1

@ereck44 Congratulations on the loss. My husband has similar issues. I cant get him to target fiber. He thinks gas station food is a food group
Ive only just gotten him to drink water during the day, on non running days, and thats still hit and miss.
@PastorVincent i think i started watching my macros out of the atkins movement in the mid 90's. Then more so recently due to food intolerances. I suspect I should be doing the FODMAPS thing. But it looked like to much to remember so i abandoned it, and just started a mental no-no list.
I'm entertaining a genetic test fo food but am sure my results will be "duh, i already knew that". Anyone do the test?
Well because @BEERRUNNER ran Dinosaur Valley Park yesterday, we packed up and decided to hike/run-ish together (dh and i), trails half the day, or until we run out of water. I'm looking forward to a solid 3-4 hours of exploring, like a kid! Can we go yet? Can we go yet? Get up get up get up!9 -

First... best I can tell... the genetic food test is bunk. So skip it. IMO, YMMV, and IANAD and all that.
Also, I lost my first 50 pounds doing Atkins. There are lots of copycats now that have overly complicated it (including his successors that own the diet now), but I really think he got all the basics right - back in what the 70s? when it first came out.

Yes 70's. There are a lot of copy cat diets and ones not so dissimilar. Thanks for gene testing info0 -
Ha, @MegaMooseEsq - very entertaining. You are a bag of crazy, as many of us are . Great job on your distance PR. Hate the first mile, always.
Macros - I have always just left the MFP settings on the default of 50% carbs, 30% fat, 20% protein and don't really do more than glance at them other than making sure I'm not falling behind on protein. That was my strategy when I was losing weight (60 lbs lost) and now as I maintain/work on fitness. I do go a bit crazier on carbs now just because I can afford more calories with running though.
Enjoyed sleeping in and lazing around this morning. Planning on a run later when a friend gets back to town. It will be warm but humidity should be a little better. I hope. But right now I need to get moving for a hike with my little beast.

8/1/18 2.65 miles
8/2/18 3.1 miles
8/3/18 3.1 miles
8/4/18 10 miles
8/5/18 2.7 miles
Total 21.55 /100-115
It was a rough one this morning. Didn't sleep well after my dog woke me up sometime around 3 am and the other dog thought it was a good idea to get in bed and pant in my face.
I saw someone mention audiobooks. I prefer podcasts for non-speed runs and music for speed work. Although I'd advise against comedic podcasts unless you are ok with your neighbors thinking your nuts. I listened to 2 Dope Queens yesterday and was literally doubled over laughing out loud at a few points (which makes it hard to run too). I passed a guy twice and snorted in laughter after just passing him each time. I hope he didn't hear and think I was laughing at him!
I forgot... who is in the 100-mile club? How are we doing? I am a bit behind, I estimated the 1st and today to be around 3 miles.6 -
Because I run either trails or country roads, I do not use any headphones or ear buds... I actually prefer the sounds of the outdoors and the steady slap of my shoes... If I get engrossed in my music on the trails and zone out a tiny bit I will end up taking a dig... And when I am country road running I need to hear loose dogs and rednecks in pickup trucks who think they are at Talladega....4

@katharmonic Ha, that image would look great on a shirt! I'm going to steal it and put in on one of my Strava runs.
@Elise4270 Macros? Don't really watch them...if or when my performance starts to suffer, I may look into it then, but not until. I'm just too lazy for that!
@rheddmobile You wanted to know what I thought of the Zoom Fly SPs so I've written it up below, but TL;DR I like them.
So today's run was a quick test of the new shoes that arrived last week (Zoom Fly SP). They feel very comfortable although they're a little on the snug side; apparently they're supposed to be that way so as to feel like they're a part of your foot...ergo, I'm not sure whether to send them back and try a half-size up or not. After one short run, I'm erring on the side of probably not, but I'll do another longer run with them maybe next weekend and see if it changes my mind.
How did they perform? Pretty darned well to be honest. They're supposed to be for faster-paced runs, and although it was warming up and slightly humid for 7am (77F, with a dew point of 70F), the run turned out to be the fastest of the 23 times I've run that particular route. That wasn't what I was actually intending to do, meaning that I inadvertently ran it faster than previous tempo runs. Maybe I'm simply fitter and faster now, so read from that what you will.
I was also concerned after reading reports by others of foot and leg soreness caused by the shoe stiffness from its embedded plate, but that's not something that I experienced. Maybe I don't push off from my toes anywhere near as much as others do, so maybe my energy isn't being spent trying to bend the shoe? Maybe my run was too short to feel the strain? Dunno, it's just something I'll keep in mind with future longer runs and see if I experience anything similar.
Overall, I like them and will be buying more pairs, but as I said, I may also try a half-size up to see if I like the slightly larger size more.

13.1 miles this morning.
Slept in an extra hour. The heat and humidity came back. Miles 4-5 were tough. Feet were squishy from all the sweat running down my legs.
But on the bright side, since it was light out, I was able to see what caused me to roll my ankle earlier this week. There was about a 10ft. circle in the street that has sunk about 10 inches from all the heat and drought (think mini sinkhole). So will avoid that area in the future.
Also, actually felt good for the entire run (except miles 4-5 for some reason), and really didn't want to stop, but thought better of it to avoid injury. So all in all, I'd rate it a successful run.
Oh, and @RunsOnEspresso, I am part of the 100 mile club. Go team!12 -
8/1 = 15 miles
8/2 = 10.5 miles
8/3 = yoga flow class
8/4 = rest day
8/5 = 10.5 miles
August goal miles = 175 / 36 miles-to-date
Upcoming Races:
10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/11 = Hill Country Trivium Half Marathon (tentative depending on work schedule)
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon6 -
Was getting ready to head out for my run when I realized that I wanted another pair of shoes, so I had to stop and order them.... Now I can go do my run...

Hello everyone! I am starting back up on MFP and new to this group! I love how involved everyone is and I think that even though I haven't ran in a while, I walk a couple of miles a day, this would be a great group for me to be a part of to start my running journey.
Since my fiance and I just bought a house, I'm starting late, and I am new I am going to set a goal of 25 miles.
Hopefully I am able to do more than that. After reading through the posts I think you guys will be motivation enough for me to beat this goal!16 -
So this is all self diagnosed, but as a former LMT, (& nurses aide) I think I have a pretty good idea of what is physically going on. True, I'm not a doctor or NP, but I when I read through different sources, go back to my old books & such, I think I'm a least in the right ball park anyways.
After my run yesterday, I felt a nice, sharp pain in my right hip. Did not go away throughout the day or evening, and is still with me today. When I move, do self manipulations or stretches I am oh so aware that it is inflamed. Ya, I think I've got a case of acute hip bursitis. Dang it.
Its all my fault, I've not been as stringent - ok, I've not stretched out after my runs this past week or so, and I've ignored my body's signals to take time, stretch &/or yoga it out. But with my monthly goal set higher (I know, "injuries" come 1st) because I have that "Revenge" 5K in a few weeks, just how long should I take off running to let it get better?
I am on a rest day today, plan was to run tomorrow & Tuesday, rest Wed. (run 2 days, rest 1 routine) Now thinking plan is just doing Yoga tomorrow & seeing how it goes for Tuesday, either yoga, swim or run if I feel up to it, rest Wed, then back running on Thur? Or is that pushing it?7 -

Hips are complicated! When mine hurts it's usually IT band, and when my husband's hurts it's usually piriformis. Do you like your shoes?
I usually find running with mild hip aches is fine for me and even improves it, but it depends very much on what the problem is. Sharp pain sounds bad. It won't hurt you to get a few more days of rest.3 -
Macros: I have MFP set to 80/10/10 (carbs/fat/prot), and I aim for that, but usually somewhere in the 70/20/10 areas. I'm trying not to stress myself out too much, and allow myself to get into a groove with myself, if that makes sense?
When I 1st started on MFP, I was losing weight left & right. Then, I had LOTS of stressors in my life, my eating got sloppy & I gained. So I changed things around, still gained, went fully plant based & still gained, saw a nutritionist still gained. She had me on a low carb (60g), high prot (110g) gluten free vegan plan - talk about stressing myself out! (no reason for me to BE on a GF diet, either!) So I started re-evaluating things, this is my life, after all. Have to be able to eat, not stress! So now I'm on a more plant based (will still occ eat cheese, I'm a Wisconsinite after all!) higher carb, lower fat & it seems to be working for me. Finally losing again & feeling better.4 -
