When you have to do a long run and found a route that looks cool only to learn (via conversation & street view) that it's actually a high speed highway with no real shoulder...
Guessing I will run laps of the village instead. After I digest breakfast.4 -

I might move my long run up a day to give me a rest day in between?
@marisap2010 - if you want to run the Labor Day race, I think moving your long run up a day would be good. It's far enough away from Wineglass that it shouldn't make a difference to that, but just how well you'd want to do in the shorter race. What will you run for you longer runs between then and Wineglass? Just curious because it's a longer taper than my coach's plan calls for and I like to hear what others do.

100% humidity here too this morning. That was a slog. I felt so disgusting but kept plugging away. Squeaked out my longest distance yet by .1 miles, so almost every long run from here on out will be a new distance PR. That is both exciting and exhausting to think about. Today's run took a lot out of me and it was hard to drag my body home after. Recharging now with some pizza and then a nap.
I volunteered to help with a race next weekend - it's the Peak to Brew relay that runs from Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks near Lake Placid to the Saranac Brewery in Utica, 220+ miles. I will be helping out at the last exchange so will then also be able to attend the after party at the brewery. Teams are responsible for getting a certain number of volunteers each so I'm helping out for the team of one of our running coaches. Should be fun, and maybe I'll get convinced to join in on the relay next year.

@katharmonic The Jeff Galloway plan I am following had me build up over about 30 weeks and has me actually doing 26 miles as my last long run one month before the marathon. I know that it a lot longer than most training plans have as the longest run, and so it advises a longer taper to recover. The long runs for the 3 weeks before the race are 7/6/7.0
-
7.5 miles late the morning. Loved it.6
-
That's interesting @marisap2010. I don't think I would be up for a 5k/10k a day or two after a full marathon distance long run! But you could plan to walk it/run easy as a recovery maybe? We run by time goals rather than distance but my longest run will probably be in the 20-22 mile range. I think I will probably do that about 3 weeks out and then something like 12 and 8-ish for the 2 weeks before. But I'm worried about not having enough of a taper so that's why I was curious.
Good luck with your training plan, I look forward to hearing how it goes for you.0 -
@katharmonic Yes, I’m not sure if I’ll feel up to anything a couple of days after such a long run, so I’m contemplating whether to do it at all.0

6 miles!! Yippee! Didn't collapse into a puddle upon finishing my run today = bonus points. Had a really good time...it went surprisingly well as my calves felt tight after I got 2.5 miles in. I got worried for a hot minute, but thankfully the tightness dissipated within another half mile.
Now...for a nap!
Just kidding......sort of.

@Avidkeo - I just live with the glasses; I'm too old to learn to poke myself in the eye. Most of the time, they don't fog up running; but when it's cool out they can fog up as soon as I go inside. When I know it will be raining or otherwise challenging for the glasses, I drive to where I'll run then change glasses. I wear my old pair to run then pull my clean current pair out of their case for the drive home.4

August Running Totals (miles)
8/1 – 2.97 IEXC 5K #1
8/2 – 7.28 MP and easy
8/3 – rest day
8/4 – 16.01 paced run
August running total to date – 26.26
Nominal August mileage goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Today I was responsible for pacing 16 miles at 8:00 per mile, starting from Durand Eastman Beach on Lake Ontario. Here are a couple shots of the lake, before and after running:
It was coolish at 7 AM, 66º F (19º C). But the dewpoint was something like 62º F, so the humidity was very noticeable. The temperature rose probably into the mid-70s as I ran.
No one showed up for an 8:00 or 8:30 pace, and 9:00 is too slow; so I ended up with a solo run structured as two different 8 mile loops. Had a brief break after the first loop for the port-a-pot, but probably shorter than if I'd been responsible for someone else. Paused the watch for that stop, then went on to the second loop.
About 10.25 miles, I noticed my legs were tired. What, after only 10 miles? Well, I'm training for a marathon. Have to run on tired legs on race day, so this is practice. Used the last of my Nuun at 11 miles. Won't do me any good to take it into the locker room. At 12 miles everything looked very long. Told myself it's just like being at Cleveland Circle, at the start of the eternal 3 miles of Beacon Street. And it wasn't; the next 3 miles after that were nowhere near as monotonously look-alike as the 3 miles of Beacon Street.
After 12.5 miles, there was quite a bit of shade, which was welcome. Used the last of my water just before 15 miles; good thing I only had a mile left. Got to the end, and did the OCD run past base to hit 16 on the Garmin thing.
This was not a difficult run physically, but it was challenging mentally at times. That's okay; I need to prepare mentally for a marathon as well as physically. After about 10 miles, I quit paying attention to my pace. It was a modest surprise that I brought the 16 miles in at an average 7:55 pace, with the only mile split more than 15 seconds off the pace being mile 16 at 7:22. Yeah, I smelled the finish line at that point. Other mile splits ranged from 7:46 to 8:13. That's a lot more consistent than I'd expect for how little attention I was paying to pace.
Today was a good day for me psychologically. I proved I can keep going for 2 hours in the humidity, given a low enough temperature and running easy enough. Look at my records, and this is the farthest I've run in one day since Boston. And, aside from the port-a-pot break, it was a continual run.
I'm not on a well defined marathon training plan, but my chances of being ready to run Wineglass are looking pretty good right now.

RunsOnEspresso wrote: »@avidkeo - I don't need my glasses to see distance really so I leave them home. Makes it a bit difficult to read my watch or a text message when I am out but I really don't need to be doing that when I am out running anyways!
Someone here suggested wiping glasses with shaving cream to keep them from fogging over. It was in response to my question about sunglasses but I expect it would work for regular glasses too.
Hadn't heard about the shaving cream! Might be worth a try! I definitely need mine, can't see more than about a foot in front of my nose so necessary for on coming traffic lol
I was going to say I don't normally wear them. When I race or go places I'm unfamiliar I wear contacts. I wonder if the stuff for scuba masks would work? I dunno.
I used spit when SCUBA diving... lol2 -
No runs have happened yet this month. We are going through a big heat wave and even 5am is too hot for me running wise - leaving the house every morning feels like facing a death squad. I have been lifting, cycling and doing other kinds of (preferably indoors) training. The heat is supposed to break on Monday.
Re: Macros. I mostly keep an eye on my proteins, with 100g a day as current goal. Enough protein mostly keeps me from being hungry all the time. Carbs and fats will happen anyway so although I track them I don't really look at the numbers.
@Avidkeo I've got a swimmer's trick for foggy glasses. Smear the lenses with Johnson's baby shampoo (a thin layer, a drop each side should be enough), wait for ten minutes, and wash it off with water. This trick keeps swimming goggles clear for three or four swims, so it should be able to keep your glasses fogless for at least the day.
Oh ill have to try that!

It's hot again! 96 temp and 75 dewpoint. It seems like my running pace is highly dependent on temperature - ran trails on the same trails as last week's PR, nearly a minute slower per mile than when the temp was twenty degrees cooler. Only 5k since my husband wrenched his ankle last run and it's not 100 percent. Hopefully it will be better by two days from now for our next run.
Re: macros. I'm a type 2 diabetic so counting carbs is life for me - I eat as many carbs as my glucose readings say I can handle, which is usually 30 - 50g per meal depending on what the food is and how quickly it hits my bloodstream. On days after lifting, and immediately following a run, my tolerances are much higher than otherwise. I try not to eat fewer carbs than 150g / day because then I start to get keto adapted and it makes me feel ill. I also try to get enough protein, optimally 150g on days when I lift. If I eat enough protein and carbs while staying within my calories for the day, the fat pretty much takes care of itself.
I saw a barefoot runner on the trail! Based on his appearance I think he may be from another country, and not aware that he was running in poison ivy (which I got on my neck after our last trail run when a tree branch caught me in the face) on a trail where poisonous snakes frequently sun themselves. It just seems like a really unsafe thing, humans invented shoes for a reason.4 -
8/1 - 5.59 km
8/2 - 5.42 km
8/3 - travel day
8/4 - 11.66 km
22.67/125 km
Stopped early because I got blisters on both heels and I have a half marathon in 15 days, and I got lost and it was very hot but I had a pleasant run around Agassiz regardless. Honestly I'm not sure how much farther I could have run without doubling back in places I'd already run because this is a pretty small,.sleepy village. Accidentally found myself running along the highway and that was scary because tourists drive like demons.

@Avidkeo I wear contact lenses about five days per week. Like them a lot more than glasses - fogging up is one of the reasons! Although if that is the only thing that bothers you about your glasses, as shanaber suggested a tiny bit of shaving foam smeared on the glasses before you go running is worth a try.
@quilteryoyo Happy birthday!
@skippygirlsmon Wow, Skip looks like she really likes her new bike. Understandable, I love the color!

I'm so jealous of everyone who has cooler weather! I finally (after six weeks of heat) decided to invest in a fan for my apartment, hoping it would help to get a bit of air circulation to invite cooler air inside during the night, but it isn't working. I leave all the windows wide open the entire night, and it was still 32°C (90F) in my apartment when I woke up this morning. Despite that, I have managed to catch a cold! I was already coughing and had a sore throat since Thursday afternoon, this morning I also had a stuffy nose. (I actually blame the heat - if I got proper sleep, rather than tossing and turning and waking up drenched in sweat, I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten sick!)
I ran anyway, but instead of 12km running at marathon pace, it turned into a 12km sluggish shuffle. Tomorrow should be 22km long run according to my plan, but I'm going to skip that, either do a really short run or nothing at all...
Re: macros : I'm not counting calories/logging food at the moment, but at the end of the day I try to think back about what I ate and if I got enough protein. If I have the impression I didn't, I'll either have a protein shake or some greek yogurt as a bedtime snack.6 -

I ran the Skunk Ape 5 mile trail run today at Monte Sano Mountain. I'm really enjoying and hating this series, because I'm starting to think the race director is trying to kill us. ha ha Each race in the series has two distances, today was 5 or 10 miles. I did the 5 and Skip worked at an aid station because of her tendons. If it wasn't a trail run she would have run it. I'm glad the RD told her no to the sweep, the 5 mile she would have been out there over 2 hours and the downhills where really rough, I did lots of bouncing like I was skiing downhill on moguls.
The race was sold out and the two distances ran together until just past 4 miles. He said Skip was working the 4.2 mile aid station but the last minute he moved her to the 6.5 mile one so I didn't get to see her. It was low 70s at the start of the race. The first 1/2 to 3/4 mile was on the road then we went off onto the trails. I have run the first trail but I never ran on most of the trails that had the larger elevations that we branched off to. The first one was little hard but okay, then we did some ups and downs the up between mile 3 and 4 I honestly thought I was going to drop out. I told the RD I was cussing him while I was out there. But when I got to the finish I was excited to run the 10K in a few weeks. I finished 125 out of maybe 200, no clue where in my age group. It took me 1:18.08. I'm glad to be in this series it's really pushing me out of my comfort zone.
Some pictures from today. The medal is so cool, love them. The picture of the tree is weird. RD told me that last night he put out the tables for the aid stations and like always he put the aid in a bag and left it on the table. This morning he was looking around and couldn't find it. He looked up, what the hell, there was the big of pretzels, m&ms and gummy bears along with the cups for the water and gatorade. I was like WTH, so after we helped clean up Skip and I took a ride over to that aid station, sure as can be there it was. The bag wasn't tied shut, there was nothing on the ground from the bag and it was just sitting there perfect. We decided Yogi the bear was getting himself a picnic basket. There have been some bear spottings lately on some other trails. Wild
All in all it was not exactly a fun run, but I did it and didn't cry and I'm proud of myself ha ha

I feel this post on a spiritual level.
Sorry to hear about your run! But you got out there, so YAY(?). I'm very intrigued in the "lost" part. Hope you're doing alright! Looking forward to your updated post later.
@skippygirlsmom Nice run! Congrats. The medal is definitely cool.@Elise4270 wrote: »
Monthly Question?
macros. Do you target them? And where's your personal "sweet" spot?
I do keep an eye out on my macros, but I don't keep myself terribly strict on hitting the targets each day. I normally make sure I'm in the ball park, and stay within the ratios I've set plus or minus how active I've been on that particular day. I'll look at the end of each day and review - if I find myself off in a particular area, I will adjust accordingly.
I'm still too new to the tracking method on MFP to have found a sweet spot yet, but I am trying to see what works for me. I've only been doing this for a little less than a month, so trial and error will no doubt play a roll for me in finding which macros % will benefit me most coinciding with my workouts.

@skippygirlsmom way to go on that trail race! Cool medal. Too bad Skip wasn't able to give you aid3
-
@_nikkiwolf_ Living in Europe in a heatwave without AC is no fun...been there plenty of times growing up. If it's not humid where you are, have you considered making a swamp cooler? Essentially it's a bucket of ice water with a fan on top, but it'll probably help you sleep a little better at night (again, only if it's not humid). Plenty of examples on the web that'll give you a better idea of how they work.
@skippygirlsmom Nice run on the trail! Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it so much, but awesome job all the same!1 -

@_nikkiwolf_ Thank you for the birthday wishes.
Once again, I didn't walk or run today. I did, however, play singles tennis for 2 hours this morning. I need to buy a new Garmin so I could count the miles I run in tennis, but I don't have one right now. That's going to be my birthday gift to myself, when I get time to order one. LOL5 -
26.01 mile "run" today. Was terrible... the last 10 miles was mostly walking because of terrible leg cramps despite 11 Nuun tablets and 15 Salt Stick chews. I think I need to put extra focus on hydration 24/7, use lite salt more often on food, and increase my daily magnesium supplementation. Plus, I'm thinking I'm going to switch to Salt Stick exclusively once I've used up my other electrolyte tablets (Nuun and Hammer).

At the camper this weekend so ran along a golf course down the road and towards the lake. It was 86F when I started out, but it was breezy. The path by the golf course is pretty shaded too. It is a really hilly path, but very beautiful.
My goal for the month is 45 miles and that is running every other day. I think I can easily get to 50 miles, but the motivation lacked pretty badly last month. I’ll put my stretch goal at 50 miles.
