The usually peaceful village we have been staying is celebrating its annual fair this weekend. Here in Spain that means NOISE.... they set up a stage in the square with more loud speakers than I've ever seen in one place at one time, and the music on Friday and Saturday nights continued full volume until past 6am. So Saturday became an extra rest day instead of a cross training day, and after 5 hours of sleep in a very hot stuffy bedroom with all the windows closed to try and block out the heat, I caved in this morning and decided I would head down the hillside instead of up it. Got my planned 5k in, the first kilometre or so was downhill then the rest was mostly flat along beside the river. Obviously that still meant I had to walk all the way back up into the village after I was done and my 'cool down' had me sweating as much if not more than my run but oh well.
Shins were a bit sore again last night from walking up and down steep cobbled streets but felt basically fine while running this morning, just a very faint niggle at one point and it passed. Now I'm back home I'm going to start making a conscious effort to slow myself down again on flat routes and I'm thinking of finding a route with some small hills to add in once a week. Although my half marathon course (and the three 5k races I've signed up for between now and then) are mainly flat I imagine the hill work will do me good.

Re: how long I've been running and whether it gets easier. I started c25k just about a year ago, and was barely able to run one minute at the time. Finished it in November 2017. Since then I've run a few races. My long runs are about 10K. I lost some ground by rupturing a Baker's cyst in my knee this February and had to take two months off, but I'm back to where I was now.
I find that every time I run it starts out seeming impossible, like my body is screaming at me, "What are you doing, you idiot? This isn't a good idea, you can't do this!" And then I do it and it was not impossible. Sometimes it's even fun while it lasts. But for me what never stops being fun is that moment when "this is impossible, I can't do this," becomes, "and yet I did." Losing my ability to run when I was injured made me so unhappy, I literally cried when I would pass the park with the trails. The first time I could get out again I was slowwwww but I felt like a big dog being let off the leash. Sometimes you have to do without something to appreciate how much you love it.

RE; How long have I been running and whether it gets easier...
I got ankylosing spondylitis when I was 14, which resulted in me getting my right hip replaced when I was 24. I had to get it re-done and got my left one replaced around the same time when I was 44. Running never really seemed to be an option. In May 2011, when I was 53, for many reasons, and at my brother's encouragement, I started running. That first mile was done in an old t-shirt, grey Russell sweats and Reebok cross-trainers. It was a wretched mile. I spent about 4 months running in traditional running shoes and was in so much constant pain (feet, ankles, knees, hips, back) I was convinced that running was a stupid idea for me.
My brother then suggested switching to minimalist zero-drop shoes and even some bare-foot running. It revolutionized everything for me. In less than two weeks the pain went away and I jumped pretty quickly into running long distances, mostly on trails. I mostly enjoy doing 50Ks but would like to try some longer races at some point. My longest run so far has been 38 miles.
I missed running nearly all of 2017 and the first four and half months of 2018 due to non-running life issues, but I am back into it and despite the late start, I think I can still salvage 1,000 - 1,200 miles this year. I don't know if the running ever gets significantly "easier" from a physical perspective. Like several people have noted, running far is more mental than anything. After about 20 miles, the physical pain doesn't really get any worse... the question is, how long can you endure it? An hour? 8 hours? 12? Those are the boundaries I like exploring. Actually, I have to explore them because I am so slow that if I want to run a long distance I am going to be on my feet for a LONG time.11 -

Supposed to be a recovery run today but legs so sunburnt can barely walk. Oh well yesterday was fun.😀 Congrats to all who made it out there today.3 -
In my ongoing search to find something that will help me run without pain, I am trying a new pair of shoes from Kuru. These are the Carerras. Love the color. But will they help me run without pain? We shall see. They're supposed to conform to the shape of your feet after a little bit of breaking in.
The Carerras are designed specifically for running and walking. I am a bit skeptical that a single pair of shoes can be ideal for both, but I figured they'd be good for my current run/walk regimen if they indeed do what they say they do.
I took them for a test drive yesterday, where I ran/walked 5k. The feel of them is a bit different than my previous shoes, but overall they were very comfortable and stable. And, no hip pain while running, so that's so far so good.
Taking a rest day today so as not to put too much stress on the hip right away. We'll have a second go tomorrow.

In for 50 miles. We are going on vacation at the end of this month and will be spending a lot of time in the car. 5 more work shifts until our vacation. Yay!

My first run outdoors for the month. It was 85 degrees, but felt cool due to the large number of 90+ days that we have been experiencing. Mostly zone running plus some tempo and some sprinting. Main goal was to clear my head, and to increase my distance for my long run to 8 miles this month.
I saw a great story on one of the "Sunday morning" programs last month about the difference between introverts and extroverts. I am pretty much an introvert who forces herself to be extroverted (at the job). Anyway, introverts have to have "alone" time to problem solve, whereas extroverts need to be around people. Running is my time to be alone. Having that time I think that it is almost as important as getting enough sleep and eating a good diet to stay healthy.

Morning all!
So yesterdays experiment was a fail. I am in more pain today - not a great deal, about a 3 compared with 1.5 yesterday, but enough to go no running for at least a week. I'm so frustrated and annoyed and pissed off. Also I have a standing desk and I find standing up to be uncomfortable. Fortunately I can sit down a lot as well so will do that when I can. It's not sore as such, but I keep finding that I'm favoring that leg.
*insert numerous expletives here*
But I would rather take time off now and be ale to start the half marathon training in 2 weeks, than keep limping along for the next several months. Ill still be lurking and cheering everyone else on but probably just quietly hitting like on everyone's post.
PS going proper shoe shopping in 1.5 weeks. I don't think its my shoes but I don't fully trust my new ones - I realised on my last run my knees keep hitting and they don't with my old shoes - and my old shoes I think are too old.7 -
@ereck44 I have to be an extrovert at my job as well. I love the solitude of running. I can think or not, it's just me against myself. I've found myself not talking or posting about my running, other than here, because people want to run with me. It's very nice of them but...no. I would be so uncomfortable.
ETA: no run today sinus headache and far too muggy. I'm ready for autumn6 -
Just found you all❤️! Going to set my goal a 100 mile ran in August. I am training for my 1st half marathon. I am doing a 5K on 12/1 and my half on 12/2. Up until July I had never ran more then 2 miles without stopping and I had only done that a few times. I did a lot of run/walk and could walk forever, so running is new thing for me🙂.

So I go away for a week and come home to 700 or so posts - gonna take a while to catch up!!
I managed to run Mon-Fri while in Fiji - just once round the golf course in the morning while it was still cool. It was a 5.2km loop, I think - my Garmin measured it differently each time, between 5.2 and 5.6km. It took ages for the GPS to pick up - up to 10 minutes - which probably explains it. Because the runs were short, I focussed on speed, but they were also fasted runs so not at my absolute fastest. Did get a new 1km PR so was pushing it!!

I had a really good run today. I ran 8 miles. I didn't think I would get to run today so I was really happy just to get out there. I was scheduled for a colonoscopy tomorrow but that got rescheduled to next week, plus it was supposed to rain all day today but so far nothing but a few drops. It looks like some of the other Texas runners have been getting some rain, but as usual the rain just seems to go around us. It has been humid though so we did get that. But even with a 90% humidity and a dewpoint of 70 I still managed to have a good run. And I am halfway to my August goal. I did set it lower because I was expecting to miss some runs this month and I will probably miss two runs next week and possibly 3 depending on how I feel the day after anesthesia so I was glad to get a nice long run in today.
@RunsOnEspresso I am so sorry for your loss. I've been there and know how hard it is to lose a pet.
@skippygirlsmom Hugs to you! I know how both exciting and sad it is to drop your baby off at college. Love the padlocks! And Skip looks ready. She'll do great!
@katharmonic I think that standing around does make you sore. And standing around the day after a HM is really going to make you stiff.

bit of an update actually, i work in a Hospital to got chatting to one of the Drs about it who does a lot of running as well, and its not actually shin splints but Posterior Tibial tendonitis. did a bit of googling and found some videos on treatment, did some cross fiber massage and OMG the pain is so much better already! Doing a lot of reading again, just like shin splints the question of running on it is dependent on my pain threshold and willingness to self care (massage, ice, stretch etc)
So I am still going to try to leave it a week, maybe see how it feels Friday. But Ill be keeping up this treatment. and a big one is shoes, I'm even more convinced its my shoes now. so new shoes next week. Definitely not going to make my goal this month but that happens. My goal now is to manage this so I can run again!12 -
10k mostly on trails at 2 pm. Hot hot hot, 100 degrees and stupid high humidity. We had the usually-crowded-on-weekends park almost to ourselves, no one else was dumb enough to be out there except a handful of walkers, no other runners. When I took my shoes and socks off it looked like I had gotten a spray tan with my running shoes on, because I was perfectly evenly covered in medium brown dust. However, this run puts me back on target for my stretch goal of 50 miles! Tuesday is our 25th anniversary so I will probably skip that run, but that should still leave me enough run days to make my stretch goal.
Speaking of anniversaries, my husband is a dingaling. He pulled his shirt off over his head while running and pulled his buff off with it, which promptly fell into the creek, but he failed to notice his buff was missing until we were half a mile down the trail. So we had to turn around and run back and find it. Naturally he had taken his shirt off while crossing the bridge at the bottom of the gulch, which means we had to run up and down the steep gulch and the almost vertical stairs leading to the bridge four times, instead of just two. It's kind of amazing to me that we've been married twenty-five years, and although both of us have grown and changed in that time, in some ways he's still exactly the same dingaling I married. It's probably a good sign that he hasn't invented any new and creative ways of being a dingaling - some people do!12 -
@avidkeo, you're right, your knees shouldn't be hitting. New shoes should help hugely. Also consider investing in a foam roller if you don't have one already. They make the whole self massage thing easier (I use mine most evenings while watching TV).2

Yay! I am much closer to finding a route! Ran half marathon loop today! Now if I can just remember the route... I think I can turn it into 15 miles. That be ideal. Then for my long road runs, I can just do it twice. Will need to investigate the possibility of Brady's Run Park which is supposed to have some nice trails.
But for today ran a 2 hour half marathon with roughly 1000 feet of elevation. MUCH more reasonable than what I have done recently. I am much more optimistic about running here now... the real question will be when the bad weather hits. Not having the full gym at work anymore will put a damper on things. Will figure something out I am sure.14 -
I meant to go to yoga today, but stupid anxiety. I was whining to my sister how a year after I started on MyFitnessPal I’m back to restarting c25k and I’m only down 3 lbs overall. Her response? “Well, you stayed alive so that’s a pretty good start.”
Amazing really, how really vitally important staying alive is and how it’s so often overlooked.
Dragged my husband to the gym after we got the tiny human to bed and Grammy set up watching midsomer murders on Netflix. I completed w5d3 of c25k - run 20 minutes straight. I wish I could say I was exhilarated or anything, but it was an awful run. I had a hole in my sock, my right calf was tight and wouldn’t loosen, my left hip started to hurt. But I did it.
Sometimes it’s enough to just survive.16 -
@Avidkeo good that you have a proper diagnosis. That makes a huge difference in treating injuries. Rest is good, but I've found (this is just what helps me) is light running or walking seems to speed the healing for some reason. Also foam rolling every day (morning and evening) relives a lot of my lower leg pain. Good luck!
@RespectTheKitty I like thr look of thr new shoes. Can't say I've ever heard of that brand, but I hope they are magic shoes for you!

@eponine1984 it happens. I wish I could say it never does, or it will get less and less, but anyone that has been at this any length of time will tell you sometimes running just sucks. It is the mental toughness that this sport builds that carries you through it - and makes you a stronger person in all areas of life.4

thanks @contrarymary and @Scott6255 My biggest struggle will be to keep it gentle this week. It sux that all the advice conflicts. I'm pretty sure mine is just a mild case - I can lift onto my tiptoes on that foot with just mild pain, which apparently gets harder to do as it gets worse. I really find the massage helps. So will see how it goes. moan moan, cant run, moan.

It has been a while since I updated my mileage so thought I would post that and respond to a few posts... I ran on Friday leaving the pup at home. It was just too hot for him and by then end of the run when the wind actually kicked up a bit it was a smoky ashy mess. We had a late night Friday night (Star Wars A New Hope at the Hollywood Bowl!) and while I meant to get a run in at some point on Saturday it just didn't happen. We were under a air quality warning to stay indoors and I just couldn't face running at the gym again. Today we were at an agility trial most of the day - running but not the kind that is relaxing. We had some good runs, Hobbes the Vizsla too a 1st in one of his events (he was the only qualifying dog at that jump height) did well in his others but it just got too hot. Realized after we got home that I really didn't do a great job with the sunscreen and my chest and lower neck are very sunburned but not my face or arms. I thought I was in the shade most of the day except during our events and they aren't all that long.

@Avidkeo - this video that I posted earlier this month talks about arm swing and how it is related to your knees hitting... Also as others have mentioned I would get and use a foam roller if you don't already. It is really good to roll out your calves and you might find that it helps your shin splints.

On the question about when we started running and how long it took to feel 'good'...
I started running in October 2011 in my mid-50's. I was also one of those who always hated to run. I have always had problems with my feet and ankles over pronating to the point that my ankles would be bloody just walking to school. I had 'special' shoes that were ugly and incredibly heavy making it impossible to run with the other kids. So my answer was to just not run although I did swim and ski a lot.
My trainer actually suggested that I start adding 'a bit more cardio' to my day by running a block or half a block when I walked. It was horrible at first but I was determined to make it work if that was what it would take to lose weight and get strong. I didn't know about C25K or have this awesome group to guide me; I just ran and ran and ran... I ran way too much - over 1250 miles my 1st year including my 1st HM. I also was injured a lot because I was just trying to do too much - shin splints, torn PF, etc. and I slipped playing with the new (at that time) puppy and tore my meniscus.
The 1st probably 3-4 months were pretty awful and then it started getting easier and I could run further but I was pushing myself way too hard to go further and faster.

@ereck44 and @kcs76 - I think a lot of us here are introverts and find this the perfect way to interact. I too had to be an extrovert at work and work with many very extroverted people (technical sales support). Running was where I could work it all out and prepare my head to be in that space. Sometimes the idea of a group run sounds fun but I think I would find it intimidating as well as annoying.
