Ok, now that I have a computer again and not just the stupid app...
8/1/18 2.65 miles
8/2/18 3.1 miles
8/3/18 3.1 miles
8/4/18 10 miles
8/5/18 2.7 miles
8/6/18 blood draw
8/7/18 3.9 miles
8/8/18 3.3 miles
8/9/18 3.05 miles
8/10/18 2.7 miles
Total 34.5 /100-115
Today's mileage should have been a bit higher but my week has caught up to me. It was turtle speedwork today. I started out with a shuffle for my zone 1 warm up. My highest HR was 125. I'm usually on the verge of zone 1 when my warm-up is done. I move into 5 minutes of zone 2. I attempt to pick it up a bit more. I got up to 144, which is a little low for my zone 2. I usually bounce between 145-150.
Now, on to the "hill" repeats. I am supposed to do 30 seconds in zone 5 followed by 1:30 in zone 1. I usually can get to zone 5 for 30 seconds then I walk for 30 seconds and shuffle for a minute.
I never got out of zone 2 today!
My 30 seconds were about a minute or so slower than I usually go and I walked a minute or more then shuffled for maybe 30 seconds until the next repeat started.
But... it's just one run, right? I'll wake up a bit later tomorrow, try to beat the heat, and get back on track!
Running... it's a love/hate relationship no doubt!10 -
What do you guys do for a warm up and how much of a difference do you notice?
On most runs, I walk a couple of hundred metres, then make my first 1-2 kms very slow.
If I'm going to go for it on a run, I'll do 1-2 km easy and some dynamic stretches before the race. That also applies our speed/interval sessions for our running club.3 -
@polskagirl01 Great week!
@katharmonic Hey, a HM is a HM. Tick! Nice you can do an event. We only have one HM event in town per year.
@MaxT370 Glad to see you found this thread!
@RunsOnEspresso The heat will be doing its bit to make your body better at running.
So many of you have terrible heat! That sucks!
Meanwhile today, my hands were so freezing I was trying to run with my hands in my armpits!

Regular old loop. It was hot, I was starving, and everything hurt. So it was just one of those runs...
Re: warm-up @Avidkeo I'm pretty bad at warming up. Sometimes if I run first thing in the morning I do dynamic stretches. Don't usually feel a need for them if I run after work, since I've either just cycled 10km home or had a pretty fast walk from the subway station.
Re: every mile is a bear @RunnerGrl1982 I started running in Nov. 2013. I think it took me a month or so. Even now it's sometimes still hard (today for example), but I think we also get used to the feeling that running is hard, and so get better at pushing through the bearish parts.
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)4 -
*sigh* taking a DNS today. Ah well. Weather cleared up so at least the others will have a good, if muddy and humid race.11
-
Slept in, struggled to get out the door, ran basically around a storm so had all of the humidity and none of the relief of the rain, and stuff hurts (right quad was complaining the loudest, I'm blaming swimming). But even with the shortcut at the end, I still got 14k in. It's a no-work Saturday, so I'm going to go take a nap. Weekly total is within my "consistency" goal range.
On a more positive note: my running buddy has had a habit of not running when I was out of town. So this past week she was on vacation too. I got a video message of her on vacation... running! It was being recorded by someone riding a bike behind her. It totally made my day!
My 2 toenails that had turned black after the marathon in May finally fell off. Might be weird, but I'm pretty proud of this
Upcoming races:
August 18 Chmielakowy Half Marathon (Krasnystaw)
August 26 Kolbudy 10k, Bąkowo (Kashubia)15 -
So for whatever reason today, Endomondo is having a *kitten* and is not transferring my run over. If it decides to later then great and we will adjust cardio. 6.13 miles at just under 13 min mile pace, long slow run for the week. Then .14 mile cool down.
ETA:total of 29.84 miles so far this month, all outdoor. YAY! 🕺happy dance for no treadmill😂5 -

8/11 13.1miles
Yesterday, I took the kiddos out on their bikes while I ran. It went pretty well! A bit slow, but some sections were a bit fast while others were quite slow. An inadvertent interval run I guess
This morning I decided I would head out early to try to beat the heat. I got out at 6:40... it was 75 and overcast with a bit of a breeze... not horrible, still humid though. I set out to go slow knowing I had a long way to go. At about 7 miles my right hip started complaining. Unusual, haven't ever had pain in my right hip... at 8.5 miles I started walking to try and stretch it out. So I finished the 4.5 miles run/walking. Ugh, worst run in a really long time. At least it's over and now the sun is shining!
ETA, I just added up the mileage on my shoes 439 miles. I guess it's time for new shoes!

Nice easy run this morning in much cooler weather. Still a bit sticky but a relief. After I got home I changed into a long sleeve shirt for walking the dog. Kind of a nice change!
I'm off in a little while for my volunteer gig at the relay race. Forecast is looking like pretty good chances of rain, maybe even heavy at times. I stopped and bought a rain poncho and I'm bringing a few clothing options. I'm at the last exchange only 4 miles from the finish, so runners and going to be tired but ready to finish. Hopefully it's not too bad for them.
Thank you @USCBMOM22, @_nikkiwolf_ and @Orphia (and for all the likes as well!) for your congrats on my impromptu half marathon race.6 -

I went to bed early and got to sleep in a bit. It was only 77 at 6:15 am! I felt good and I probably went out too fast. I had to stop a few times and stretch my calves as I was getting shin splints. Felt better as soon as I stretched. I worked hard to keep positive thoughts and work on my form.
My 40 minutes ended at 2.88 and normally I'd just round up to 2.9 but this morning I said *kitten* it, I want 3 miles!
12 miles tomorrow. I hope the temp and cloud coverage sticks around or I'll be up super early. And it will be better than yesterday and today!7 -
I have no mojo. Please send some my way.
I think this may be menopausal. But I've always struggled with low energy levels. Usually B vitamins and lots of caffeine help. Nowadays it seems like my B's are placebo's. The caffeine just gives me a dull headache.
Dh went on a run without me. Jokes on him. He thinks its nice out. 75 F, real feel is 86 with 88% humidity. Be nice for about 3 steps.
Will take advice. May just need to give in to another round of hormone pellets. I did eat two slices of pizza two days in a row, and had knock your *kitten* out anesthesia Thursday for dental work. Maybe i can shake it if i quit eating crap food.
I dreamt i met up with @garygse but we were both teenagers at a family like gathering. i wanted to run with him, he said "no" cuz i was too slow, then i punched him in the chest and he laughed at me. Still dreaming, i checked my ranking in a race and was 5th overall. Haha!
Yesterday Taco casa got my order wrong and gave me root beer. Hense the Gary dream. And i wanna be fast like him, i guess.15 -

My anxiety has been peaking a bit lately as I approach What would’ve been my due date, and yesterday was a bad day. I had trouble sleeping last night, so my husband had already taken the kiddo for a walk when I woke up. I debated just staying in bed and running “later” (or not at all), but the temp was 73F, so I knew I needed to get out.
First time running 8 minutes non stop in a very very long time, and I just kept telling myself, “you can slow down, you just can’t stop.” It wasn’t as bad as expected and I really think it has to do with the temp - humidity is still sitting around 90% but it was a good 10-15 degrees cooler than my last couple outdoors runs.

@Elise4270 my guess would be the knock-out gas at the dentist. Especially with dreams like that
If it is menopausal, afraid I can't help you there. Probably just this dang weather. It's been sucking the will, energy, and motivation from me.
Hang in there and it will get better.... eventually.4 -

Can't or won't? 😁 (Archer reference).
I figured part of it has to be the exhausting heat. Thanks for the support.0 -

Humidity and heat kills me as a runner. I flippen ran an ULTRA MARATHON and a 9-mile run left me wanting to walk. Do not worry too much, push through it and you will be stronger on the other side. Distance running is like 137% mental game.
And definitely "can't" to the other question, my wife is not there yet and I never will be, so no point of reference!

Seriously though, sounds like you may just need to rest up a little and maybe refuel some? Time for some generous portions of pasta maybe? Dunno. I find caffeine doesn't generally give me energy or pep (or rather it's short-lived at best)...for me it just tends to suppress the ability to sleep, so I still feel tired and worn out, but with the added bonus of not being able to fall asleep or get a good night's rest.
And I'll agree with the others that the heat doesn't help at all, hence why I run at stupid times in the morning.
Oh, and I'll run with anyone. Well, except @MobyCarp...he's just too darned quick and I wouldn't be able to keep up!5 -
Ran for the first time yesterday. Intended on going outside but due to the rain I did so on a treadmill. Lasted for 30 minutes slow jogging. Definitely feel like I don't have the right shoes for this!
I also forgot to note my distance. I can't imagine it was far though lol.10 -
Haha! You guys are great! Thanks @garygse and @PastorVincent . I think you could share some testosterone. But that'd be just wierd and potentionally slightly perverse. Little jealous of the genetic advantages you guys have.
I'll pass on the pasta. Not sure why but it makes me sick. Think I'll get out for a heat run in a bit.
Maybe dh will be down for bbq, but he doesn't seem to love it as much as I do. So on second thought, perhaps I should just put a fatty chuck roast in with some taters.5 -

Different people react differently to anesthesia but it makes me feel bad - off color and not quite with it - for about six weeks. I looked it up because I was starting to get worried and that's not at all unusual. It seems likely even more people have lengthy reactions than anyone is aware, since most would put it down to tiredness, recovering from whatever caused them to need anesthesia in the first place, etc.2 -
@Elise4270 I definitely think it’s the heat. I keep reminding myself how wonderful it’s going to be to run in chilly weather again and how much faster I’ll be with all this extra blood pumping through my system!1

Today is 2 days after your dental work. If it required "knock your *kitten* out" anesthesia, it was serious. I would expect you to be low energy for a while recovering from the dental work. The anesthesia may also be an issue, but just plain recovering from dental surgery significant enough to *need* anesthesia on Thursday is enough to explain really low energy and no mojo on Saturday.6 -
August Running Totals (miles)

8/5 – 6.28 easy with fast finish

August running total to date – 71.94
Nominal August mileage goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – I decided to be stupid last night. Went to bed about 9, but stayed awake reading till 2; and the alarm went off a 4:15 so I could have breakfast before getting out to run at 7 AM. Oh, well.\
Other than my own stupidity, it went really well. No one showed up wanting an 8:00 or 8:30 pace, so the other guy who can pace those and I went out with the 9:00 pace group. We tried to keep each other honest; the objective is not to run these folks into the ground!
There was some uphill and downhill terrain, as is fitting for a training program aiming at the Rochester Marathon and Rochester Half. I got almost 9 miles in being fairly responsible, before one trainee started running close to 8:30 and I just went with it after mile 9. Mile splits for the first 11 miles were 8:52, 9:03, 8:56, 8:47, 8:36 (oops), 9:11, 8:40, 8:56, 8:49, 8:39, and 8:31. None of the trainees were going further than 11, so the rest was solo. Total route was 17 miles, but I added enough loops to get to 20. Solo mile splits were 7:56, 7:51, 7:54, 7:43, 8:00, 7:55, 8:02, 8:02, and 7:48. So I figure I targeted 11 miles at 9:00 and was a bit fast late, then 9 miles at 8:00 and was reasonably close. Fair disclosure: I paused the Garmin 3 times for brief stops.
In addition to my traditional before and after shots of Lake Ontario, I got a group selfie when we passed the base camp/water station at about 6.7 miles and paused for a solo selfie at the traditional selfie lake overlook at about 17.5 miles:

A hot and steamy parkrun this morning, bringing my monthly total to 17.3 miles.
And if it wasn't hot and steamy enough, we also got the opportunity to run through a 'fog sculpture'

Shanty Days 5K
Today was the third race in the series that my husband and I are working on. Neither one of us had run this race before, but since we were able to do the other two so far we wanted to do this one. It’s in a small town in WI on Lake Michigan. Almost 600 finishers and today’s race was the 25th anniversary.
I’ve been lazy and traveling for work so needless to say went into this one ill prepared. It was crowded at the start, but after the first .25 miles there was space. I was weaving in and out of people so wasted way too much energy at the start, so by the second mile I was suffering. There was a long up climb, but after that started making up time as the last mile had a welcoming down hill. It was also along the lake, which was very beautiful. It was humid and had been having sinus issues the last week, so breathing was not the best. I’m very happy with my time, but disappointed with my efforts the last month. I’m waiting on my daughters soccer schedule for the fall season to register for the next two races, so hoping her games are later in the day.
Finished in 28:27 and husband finished in 24:54. There was a surprise for the 25th anniversary and each 5k participant received a glass. There were so many items of food and drink for the runners too. Bottle of water, Gatorade, chocolate milk, Subway cookie, granola bar, goldfish crackers, banana, apples, and cheese sticks. All for $20 registration fee (early registration, but still).

@MaxT370 - Running newbie over here! Found this group a little late into the month but that's okay. I'm going to aim for 3 to 4 miles. That seems low but I think it's a good place to start. I've gone off the deep end and registered myself for the 2018 hot chocolate 15k in November.
Welcome!! And good luck with your training for the November race.@MegaMooseEsq - I started running last summer, mostly took the winter off, and have run 3-4 times a week since the end of April this year. I’d say I was feeling that mile-by-mile struggle on and off until about a month ago when I stopped trying to run ten-minute miles and dropped back to 11-12 mpm. Other than the occasional tempo or fartlek run I’ve just focused on distance and have been a lot happier and more comfortable. My pace is slowly increasing but I’m still slower on average than I was running in June, and that is okay with me!
Thanks for the insight. This speaks to me a lot right now. I think I'm trying too hard right now to run 10 minute miles when I should be continuing to comfortably run 11-12 minute miles instead. I'm internally competitive, so I'm always pushing myself, and some days I just have to try and keep telling myself not to constantly run hard...I need to let myself run easy days otherwise I could end up doing more harm than good in the long term.
@AlphaHowls You constantly amaze me the more I learn about your running and the distances you run. That's absolutely inspiring to run as many long distance as you do and on what seems to be a consistent basis! Thank you for sharing!@MobyCarp - I've either been running consistently or injured since August, 2011. After I became able to run for 30 minutes continually, the first mile was never a bear . . . until after I was able to run a marathon. Now, sometimes I just have to gut through that first mile till things feel right. This can be mitigated by extensive walking before I start running, but I don't always have the time for that.
Later miles were sometimes notably bearish until I learned to run easy in early 2014. I struggled with running slow enough to keep it easy for some time, didn't truly master that art until some time in 2015.
And even now, on the very humid days, every mile after the first hour can be a bear. This partly depends on how fast I run early. If my discipline for running easy is good, I can last longer than if I let myself run marathon pace early.
So, the generic advice to all new runners: If running every mile is a bear, you're probably running too fast. Slow down a little, maybe only 15 seconds a mile. It will make a big difference on your longer runs.
Controlling pace is a whole other topic; I didn't start to get good at that until 2015, and it's still a work in progress.
Thanks for this! I too find it hard to run slow and keep things at an easy pace...but that's my entire run in general. Sometimes I feel it's actually more taxing on my legs to run a slower, easy pace than it is a faster one. I'm not sure why, I honestly think I'm mentally psyching myself out there. Great advice provided!
@_nikkiwolf_ Thanks! I'm sorry you had a rough start to the day, the other day! I hope you are feeling a bit more back to normal now!
@biketheworld Thank you for sharing your own experience! That seems to be the common piece of advice, is let yourself go a bit slower, and it will all come together eventually.
@PastorVincent Sorry to hear about the crash. I'm glad to hear there were no injuries to any parties involved.
@Avidkeo Hope the icing is going well! Wishing you a speedy continued recovery. I'm not an expert on warm-ups for sure, but generally whatever my run distance is for the day, I'll do a warm-up of 20 - 30% of whatever distance I'm running for the day. Just something light and easy before starting in on my main run for the day. I also think it's a preferential thing as to what warm-ups work best for everyone. No two people are a like in their routine I imagine.
@garygse Thanks for sharing, and the advice is definitely helpful. You are amazing for waking up at 1:30 to get your running in. Just blown away really...
@noblsheep Very true! I agree, that the mental perception also plays a roll in that feeling, when you can push and keep getting through the rough patches.
@workaholic_nurse Any day without a treadmill = WIN! Nice going!
@Elise4270 Sending positive vibes your way!
@BruinsGal_91 Wow!
@jele30 Congrats on the 5K! And lovely photos!

@runnergirl1982 thanks for that. I think i just need to add some dynamic stretches. And you are right, it's what suits you.
Sunday morning and I'm getting antsy. I just want to run. Grrrr. I still have a bit of pain but not much. I've been googling and keep getting conflicting advice about running with shin splints. I really think mine was the 3ts (too much, too fast, too soon) so in theory I should be OK to go out and take it gentle.
I think im going to do a gentle 3-5k run today and see how I go. If it makes it worse, I'll actually take the time off... Grrr so frustrating and confusing1 -

Longest distance to date this year. Sad....but true. LOL. But I made it and didn't keel over or trip over my own two feet - so I consider finishing my run a win.
I had an enjoyable time up until the 4th mile. My big toe got a cramp or something, so I stopped got some water and massaged it out. It was fine again after running through another half mile later. Not sure what it was or the cause as my feet have been feeling really good. I'll just make sure to give some extra care to them today and tomorrow.
The weather was great. A nice 77 degrees out and fairly low humidity. Can't really ask for better really. Thank you for everyone's responses to my questions. Great advice provided among all. Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.

Four lakes down, 9996 to go! Six miles this morning instead of the 7.5 I originally planned so no distance PR, but I did up my weekly mileage PR to 15.75, so that’s fun, and also about 50% of my total mileage for 2017. I got going fairly early but I guess other people looked at the forecast too, because there were a lot of runners out.
I spent the rest of the morning in the suburbs taking my mom to brunch and then grocery shopping, so now I kind of want to murder everything but I’m way too tired so I guess I’ll just take a nap. I love my mom, but the suburbs drive me bonkers. Give me a walkable urban neighborhood or give me a yurt in the middle of nowhere, thanks.
I’m going to be irritated at myself if I don’t lift today, but that’s a struggle for after my nap.

@MegaMooseEsq I'm not doing enough lifting. Lucky if I manage once a week. I love lifting but I just can't be bothered atm.1
